England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win?

England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win? | Do England stand a fighting chance in India?

Following England’s recent series win in Sri Lanka, I started to wonder whether they really did have a chance at winning a Test series out in India for the first time since 2012. That said, England need to address some key points before they can even think about winning a series in India, which is arguably the toughest assignment in world cricket.

Banishing the demons of a torrid 2016/17 series

England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win? | Do England stand a fighting chance in India? | Test cricket analysis: IND vs ENG
England in India 2021: Can Dom Bess produce both consistency and threat?

On England’s last tour of India, it’s safe to say that they were demolished by the home side despite making numerous scores of 400+. After drawing the first test match in Rajkot, England left India on the back of a 4-0 series defeat, of which every victory was convincing for the home side.

During that series England’s bowlers really struggled to be effective. Moeen, being played as one of England’s frontline spinners, only picked up 10 wickets at an average of 64.90. Broad and Anderson only picked up 12 wickets between them, although the pitches during that series did hugely favour the spinners. So, the role of Jack Leach and Dom Bess will be absolutely crucial in this series.

England must not rely too heavily on Joe Root’s runs

England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win? | Do England stand a fighting chance in India? | Test cricket analysis: IND vs ENG
England in India 2021: Joe Root will be crucial but England need others to perform.

England relied very heavily on Joe Root’s runs during the 2016 series. He averaged 49.10 and England will need a better return from their top and middle order if they’re to stand any chance this time around.

During England’s two test tour of Sri Lanka Root scored first innings scores of 228 and 186. England’s openers struggled when facing spin early in Sri Lanka. However, Dom Sibley’s innings on the final day in Galle showed some encouraging signs. His 56* saw England home to victory in the second test. Putting to bed claims that his technique isn’t good enough in sub-continent conditions.

Leaving Jonny Bairstow at home for the first two test matches has raised a few eyebrows. As has the in-form Jos Buttler only playing the first test. But that’ll likely leave Ben Foakes with a chance to take the gloves for at least one test. A player who I think should have played more test matches for England than he already has. He’s England’s best wicket keeper and showed on England’s last tour of Sri Lanka that he can bat!

Get Virat Kohli out, early.

England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win? | Do England stand a fighting chance in India? | Test cricket analysis: IND vs ENG
England in India 2021: Virat Kohli is back.

India’s batsmen played superbly in Australia, but Virat Kohli still holds a huge key here. Getting him out early sounds simple, right? Find a way to get Virat Kohli out early in his innings and limit the impact he has on the game. Something England struggled to do in 2016, where Virat went on to score 655 runs in the series. He averaged 109.16 and gave England’s bowlers all sorts of problems.

Virat is a master of his craft, and I don’t think there is any cricket fan in the world that doesn’t enjoy watching him bat. At home, Virat is a different animal all together. Although, I’ll whisper it quietly, he did look slightly out of form during the IPL and wasn’t his usual self out in Australia before leaving. But as the saying goes “form is temporary, class is permanent”.

The return of Archer, Burns & Stokes.

England in India 2021: Can England pull off a great win? | Do England stand a fighting chance in India? | Test cricket analysis: IND vs ENG
England in India 2021: We all know what Stokes can do.

England will be buoyed by the way in which they won in Sri Lanka. Then to have players with the Calibre of Archer, Burns and Stokes coming back into the squad, the camp will be full of confidence. Ben Stokes, a genuine threat to any team with bat and ball, would walk into any test side in an instance. He strengthens the England middle order and adds another bowling option for Root to turn to. I cannot wait to see Stokes back in England whites.

Rory Burns had been a mainstay at the top of the order before he picked up an injury playing football last winter. You’d think he will slot back into opening the batting with Dom Sibley. It remains to be seen whether Archer will come straight back into the side. With the form of Broad and Anderson out in Sri Lanka they may stick with the experience duo for the first test.

My predicted England XI for the first test.

Rory Burns

Dom Sibley

Zak Crawley

Joe Root

Dan Lawrence

Ben Stokes

Jos Buttler

Dom Bess

Stuart Broad

Jimmy Anderson

Jack Leach

My Series Verdict.

This England team have an uphill battle ahead of them this winter but I do give them a fighting chance. India will be full of confidence after their performance in Australia and they welcome back their captain, Virat Kohli, back into the mix. I was really encouraged by the knock of Dom Sibley to lead England home on the final day in Galle. He’s given me the belief that he and Rory Burns can get England off to the strong start that’ll be required to take the pressure off Joe Root.

Ultimately, I think the series will be won and lost for England in two areas. Firstly it will depend on whether Dom Bess and Jack Leach can bowl consistently and aggressively enough to be challenging the Indian batsmen. I was encouraged by the way both bowled on the final day in Sri Lanka and hope they can carry that form into the first Test in Chennai. Also, England’s middle order needs to deliver this time around. They cannot afford to collapse like they have in the not-so-distant past. Ben Stokes is back and I was really impressed by the performance of Dan Lawrence out in Sri Lanka. He looks a real talent and I think that spot in the England side is between he and Ollie Pope once he is fit.

My Series Prediction – 2-1 England win.

BBL 10 Eliminator: HEA vs STR Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report

BBL 10 Eliminator: HEA vs STR Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | BH vs AS Dream11 Prediction Today | Brisbane Heat vs Adelaide Strikers Key Players | Gabba Pitch Report

Compared to the more fancied Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes, the Brisbane Heat held their nerve beautifully to seal a playoffs berth. Chris Lynn’s team, who have often disappointed in recent years, won their last two games to seal qualification, after two thrashings before that.

The Heat will be making their first finals appearance in four years. So, how will they handle the occasion? Can this decent run of form turn into some good fortune for the Heat in playoffs cricket? They come up against a side whom they lost twice to in BBL 10, so they’ll be after a big performance in front of their home fans.

That side is Adelaide Strikers. Travis Head’s team lost badly in their last game vs Thunder, as they were unable to cope with Alex Hales. Now, their bowlers, who have led the way for most of the campaign, will be keen for a big performance against a Heat batting lineup that can go big on their day.

It’s all to play for now, as it’s tournament over for the loser, and the Strikers will be looking to utilise the playoffs experience they have built up in the last few years, which includes a Title.

BBL 10 Eliminator: HEA vs STR Preview Dream11: Carey will be key.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Brisbane Heat:

  • Marnus Labuschagne’s inclusion has taken the Heat to another level. He’s hit crucial runs in his three games (28, 49 and 46) and has been in the wickets (2/20, 1/10 and 3/35).
  • Chris Lynn performed under pressure on Tuesday, smashing 51 off 25 balls in what was an elimination game for the Heat. He has had a fine season (10 inns, 420 runs, avg. 42.00, SR 157.30). However, he has a poor record vs Strikers (12 inns, 208 runs, avg. 17.33), so can he improve on this here?
  • Jimmy Peirson has a good record vs Strikers (239 runs, avg. 39.83). He scored a brilliant 69* off 36 balls against them earlier in the season.
  • Mark Steketee comes into the playoffs with 22 wickets in 13 matches in BBL 10. This includes three in two matches vs Strikers this season (nine in seven matches overall).
  • Mitchell Swepson took 2/20 vs Scorchers on Tuesday. Key player. Can he improve on his record of four wickets in seven matches vs Strikers?

Adelaide Strikers:

  • Alex Carey scored a superb century against Brisbane Heat last week (101 off 62 balls). Overall, he has scored 197 runs in four matches against them at an average of 49.25 and SR 142.75.
  • Travis Head has made starts in BBL 10 (25, 31, 2). So, is he due for a 30+ score today? He averages 35.20 vs Heat (176 runs in six innings).
  • Jake Weatherald is coming off a superb 80* (47) vs Thunder a few days ago. He scored 36 (18) vs Heat last week and is a key player today.
  • Wes Agar is wicketless in his last two games. However, last week, he took 4/27 vs Heat, part of seven wickets in three games against them.
  • Peter Siddle has taken 18 wickets in 12 games in BBL 10, including five against the Heat (2/41 and 3/13).
  • Danny Briggs took four wickets against Heat in BBL 10 (3/20 and 1/28).

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 13, Heat 5, Strikers 8.
  • Strikers beat Heat twice in the BBL 10 league stage. The first meeting was a thriller, where the Strikers won by two runs at the Gabba.
  • This is Brisbane Heat’s first playoffs appearance for four years.

Possible Playing 11

Brisbane Heat have persisted with the same squad for this match. Also, it is likely they will stick with the same XI that got the job done over Perth Scorchers.

Adelaide Strikers have named their squad. Doubt remains over Ryan Gibson’s fitness after picking up a hamstring injury vs Thunder on Monday.

Adelaide Strikers: 1. Alex Carey (wk), 2. Jake Weatherald, 3. Phil Salt, 4. Travis Head (c), 5. Jonathan Wells, 6. Ryan Gibson/Matt Renshaw, 7. Michael Neser, 8. Daniel Worrall, 9. Peter Siddle, 10. Wes Agar, 11. Liam O’Connor

Gabba Pitch Report and Weather

Morning showers should clear by the afternoon and evening, which is good news for this match.

There have not been many high-scoring games at the Gabba this season. The average first innings score in five matches is 157.4. The chasing team won three of the five matches.

“My heart rejoices” – Twitter reacts to Fawad Alam debut home century

“My heart rejoices” – Twitter reacts to Fawad Alam debut home century | Twitter reactions to Fawad Alam’s century in his first Test at home

A player with nearly 13,000 First Class runs at an average of over 56 should not be made to wait until he’s 35 to play a home Test. For Pakistan, the UAE was home for a decade, but this man didn’t even play a Test there.

That man is Fawad Alam.

In his first Test at home, Fawad displayed all the fighting characteristics that led to many crying out over a number of years for his appearance in the Test side. And now he’s making it count. On a challenging pitch against a potent Proteas’ attack, the gritty and unorthodox left-hander overcame variable bounce, turn and pace to notch up his third Test century.

And Twitter was all over it. Former players and fans were full of praise for a player that had to wait over 10 years between his third and fourth Tests. And now he’s making up for lost time. Fawad has proven that putting runs on the board will eventually pay off, and he has proven those doubters, who said that his technique wouldn’t hold up in Tests, wrong.

A truly memorable day for a patient player who had to be so patient for over a decade. Persistence pays off, and that is certainly true in the case of Fawad Alam. Thanks to Fawad, who led the way, Pakistan are well placed in their ongoing Test against South Africa. A win, after being 33/4 on day one, would certainly be a fine turnaround.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba

Brisbane has been a difficult city to tour for the Indian cricket team during their visits to Australia. The pitch at the Gabba is renowned to be quick-paced, bouncy and favours pacers immensely. Opposition batsmen always have a tough time adapting to the nature of the track and the Aussies manage to sail over them due to their familiarity with the conditions.

The fourth Test match of the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy was one the great Tests in recent times. Let us take a closer look at some of the most historic batting and bowling performances that has taken place during the India-Australia matches at Brisbane.

1: Shubman Gill: 91 in 2020/21

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba
Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane – Gill was superb

The ease with which Shubman Gill played the fierce Australian bowling trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins will make one believe that he is already a veteran in the longest format of the game. The Indian team faced an unsurmountable task of chasing 328 on the final day of the Brisbane Test to secure a series victory on Australian soil.

Gill started off the proceedings on the final day of the tour on an extremely positive note. He conveniently handled the challenges put forth by the Aussie attack, taking on the likes of Starc and Cummins for some flamboyant boundaries that reeked of the talent that the boy possesses. Starc stormed at the lad from around the wicket and threw a vicious short delivery at him. Undeterred, Gill pulled that ball over deep square-leg for a maximum. The sheer audacity of that stroke! He also scored runs at a strike rate of 62.33, which was quite important given the steep target that the team was chasing. Needless to say, the onslaught that followed later on was not fathomable without Gill’s solid effort at the start.

2: Sourav Ganguly: 144 in 2003/04

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba
Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane – Ganguly produced in Brisbane.

India had opened a window of opportunity by restricting the Aussies to a fairly decent total in the first innings. However, the top-order failed to deliver and skipper Sourav Ganguly walked into the crease with the score reading 62/3. The southpaw then went on to play one of the best overseas innings by an Indian captain as he smothered the Australian pacers through the off-side to score a massive 144 runs off merely 196 deliveries.

Ganguly didn’t give into the pressure built by the fast bowlers and instead took them on heads up with a terrific display of strokeplay and sheer class. The current BCCI president played his knock at a strike rate of 73.47, which is extremely impressive in the longest format of the game. Ganguly’s inning enabled India to gain a crucial lead of 82 runs in the first innings and that played a part in the match ending up drawn eventually; quite contrary to the pre-series anticipations.

3: Rishabh Pant: 89* in 2020/21

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba
Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane – Pant played a gem.

Rishabh Pant recently turned a new leaf in the history of Indian cricket. His fearless, fantastic rampage of 89 runs that broke Australia’s record of unbeaten at the Gabba for 32 years is going to be etched in memories of Indian cricket fans forever. The Indian side was pushed to the edge; flurry of injuries, numerous debutants, captain back home, body-blows to the most dependable batsman. Lastly, they were asked to come and prove their worth at Gabba, by no less than the Australian skipper himself.

The earlier Indian teams must have backed off to such challenges; chasing down 328 in three sessions was never in question. But, Pant’s innately valiant effort of 89 runs that pushed Australia out of the contest at their most favoured ground papered all the cracks that the visitors dealt in this tour. Pant showed all the talent that he is known to possess that afternoon. But, one of the skills that he displayed in abundance was the ability to see of the contest; not concede his wicket at crucial juncture whilst batting in the most difficult of phases of Test cricket.

His innings was a stellar show of sheer talent, ingenuity, dynamism and a rock-solid winning attitude. It was no less than a century. Rather, it defined the nature of new India; one that doesn’t surrender despite being confronted with the most challenging of scenarios.

4: Shardul Thakur: 67 & 3/94, 4/61

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba
Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane – Shardul Thakur had a dream Test

The back of India’s bowling attack was broken midway through the series as multiple frontline bowlers opted out due to injuries. Ahead of the decider, top trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja got injured and subsequently Shardul Thakur made his way to the playing XI. The pacer from Mumbai is known for bowling lengthy, tiring spells for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy and proving to be mighty effective with the willow lower down the order for his domestic team too.

All of that came to fore at the Gabba, where Thakur claimed seven wickets across two innings that included a very crucial four-wicket haul in 19 overs in Australia’s second innings. However, the bowler’s moment of reckoning came in India’s batting innings as he arrived at the crease at 186/6 with the team still trailing by 183 runs. Demonstrating a true ‘khadoos’ attitude, Thakur dug in and forged a fantastic 123 runs stand across 36 overs with Washington Sundar.

The player from Palghar scored 67 runs in 115 deliveries, which included nine boundaries and a couple of sixes too. He battled the second new ball effectively, eventually compelling the Aussies to drop their shoulders and helping India gain a key psychological advantage in the match. If not for Pant’s freak of an outing in the fourth innings, Thakur could have well and truly staked his claim for the ‘Man of the Match’ award.

5: Josh Hazlewood: 5/68 in 2014/15

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane | Top 5 Most Memorable Performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches at Gabba
Border-Gavaskar Trophy: 5 Best Performances in Brisbane – Hazlewood has a great Gabba record.

Josh Hazlewood debuted in the Brisbane Test in the 2014/15 series and was on the money right from the get-go. The pacer impressed one and all with his innate ability to hit the right line and length over long spells. Spectators compared his bowling style to that of the legendary Glenn McGrath and Hazlewood somewhat justified to these tall anticipations by taking a five-wicket haul in his very first innings. The Indian batsmen struggled to deal with the then-newcomer’s deliveries in the corridor of uncertainty that even derived some additional bounce and a hint of movement from the track.

Hazlewood dismissed the core of the batting lineup: Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane and struck an impactful blow right away. The duo of MS Dhoni and Ashwin had managed to get their eye in and could have furthered the total but Hazlewood returned to first dismiss the captain caught behind and trap Ashwin into sending the ball straight to the hands of Shane Watson. There was no looking back for Josh Hazlewood since then and he embarked on a truly iconic career from that bright sunny day at Brisbane in 2014.

5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests

The Sydney Cricket Ground is one of the most iconic stadiums in Australia. Hence, the Test match scheduled over here during every Down Under tour of the Indian cricket team is keenly followed. Over the years, some of the most memorable performances from players belonging to both these teams come in matches at SCG.

The pitch at Sydney is considered to be slightly batting-friendly and has something in it for the slower bowlers, too. However, the pacers have managed to extract enough support from the tracks too and hence it presents an all-round challenge to players of each skillset.

In this article, we ponder upon the five most iconic batting performances at the SCG in the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

 1: VVS Laxman: 167 in 1999/2000

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests
Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches: VVS loved playing against Australia.

This innings is said to be the knock that truly saved VVS Laxman’s Test career and cemented his spot in the Indian team. The batsman from Hyderabad had multiple middling outings in international cricket until then. Naturally, pressure was building on him as the Indian team underwent a very underwhelming series. Having scored merely seven runs in the first innings, Laxman really had to make the second essay of the game count to hold on to his place in the lineup. Playing as an opener, the seasoned star demonstrated some insane artistry to play a stroke-filled impactful knock of 167 runs in just 198 deliveries.

For Laxman to play at a strike rate of 84.34 is slightly rare in Test cricket; but, such was the nature of that innings. Australia had already gained a lead of 402 runs and a comeback was out of question. However, VVS scored 27 boundaries and took the bowling arsenal of Glenn McGrath, Damien Fleming, Brett Lee and Shane Warne to absolute cleaners. The Indian team could score merely 261 runs despite Laxman’s 167, and that displays how heavily tilted were the odds when the veteran batsman unleashed a masterclass to put a show of his individual brilliance.

2: Sachin Tendulkar: 241* in 2003/04

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests
Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches: Sachin’s famous knock of 241*

Sachin Tendulkar was uncharacteristically going through a rough phase in the Indian team’s tour to Australia in 2003/04. The player from Mumbai was repeatedly caught behind fishing outside the off stump and that had left him immensely frustrated. Ahead of the game in Sydney, Tendulkar decided to do something totally unique. The legendary batsman decided to put his restraint to test and score only through the leg-side at Sydney. It was a huge ask from a player of his caliber, class and range of shots.

However, to overturn the trend of his dismissals, Tendulkar decided to undertake this arduous task. Guess what? He came out of it in flying colours. Tendulkar sweated it out in the middle for 436 deliveries, notching 241 runs with 33 boundaries in the process. He consciously avoided trying out any expansive drive through the off-side, thus curbing his natural instincts and yet came out triumphant eventually.

Well, that’s the kind of mettle that truly great sportspeople are made of.

3: Michael Clarke: 329* in 2011/12

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests
Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches: Clarke slammed 329* in 2011/12

The Indian team had already suffered a terrible loss in the first match of the 2011/12 tour at Melbourne. Whatever hopes they harboured heading into the second game were thrashed by Michael Clarke’s marathon innings of 329 runs at Sydney. The Aussie pacers bundled out the Indian batsmen for 191, but Clarke came to bat at a slightly tricky phase with his team stuck at 37/3. However, the skipper first partnered with Ricky Ponting and then Michael Hussey to put the Indian bowlers through an absolute annihilation.

Clarke scored his 329 runs at an incredible strike rate of 70.30 that included 39 boundaries and a solitary six. He tired out the Indian pacers, eventually compelling them to succumb after gaining a head-start with three quick dismissals. Ravichandran Ashwin, on his first tour to Australia, perhaps bore the maximum brunt of Clarke’s assault. The off-spinner bowled 44 overs and conceded runs 3.57 RPO and couldn’t notch a solitary wicket. Clarke’s triple-century pretty much sealed the fate for Australia in that series as he stood at the crease for over 10 hours to completely demoralize and defeat the Indian team.

4: Hanuma Vihari: 23* in 2020/21

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests
Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches: Vihari showed a lot of character.

Hanuma Vihari’s steely resolve to see off the final session of day five of the recently concluded Sydney Test remains to be a tale for the ages. The batsman was battling a poor run of form and a faced a herculean task upon his arrival on the crease at 250/4. The target looked too steep to be reached from thereon, especially after Rishabh Pant’s departure. Shortly into his innings, Vihari ran for a quick single and realized that he had torn his hamstring. He took a painkilling injection and carried on, well-aware that he could not bat efficiently throughout. Yet, enduring incredible pain, Vihari didn’t let his guard down.

He tired down the pacers, putting a dead bat to the meaty blows that they inflicted upon him. Vihari’s determination looked unperturbed, immovable that day. He apprised Ravichandran Ashwin that he couldn’t bring his leg forward to defend Nathan Lyon regularly. So, the duo devised a plan according to which Ashwin would face Lyon whereas Vihari will tackle the pacers. Such grit and tough-headedness are invaluable traits for any team to succeed in alien conditions. Hanuma Vihari proved that day that milestones are not merely three-figure marks. His unbeaten 23, given the excruciating pain that he bore for 161 deliveries, deserves a special applause from the Indian cricket fraternity.

5: Cheteshwar Pujara: 193 in 2018/19

Top 5 Most Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches | Analysing the top 5 most iconic batting performances in BGT SCG Tests
Iconic Batting Performances in BGT SCG Matches: Pujara is superb in Australia.

India had already gained a 2-1 lead coming into this match and was assured of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the end of the series. However, a series victory in Australia was a coveted prize that the team couldn’t afford to miss out on. Cheteshwar Pujara, in peerless form this series, decided to put on a show for the final time in the series to help attain India’s objective.

The number 3 set his foot on the crease early on in the game due to Rahul’s early dismissal. He steered the innings gradually, getting his eye in and aiding batting partner Mayank Agarwal settle on the crease well too. Pujara displayed his trademark patience, restraint and resistance whilst dealing with the lethal Aussie attack. However, he didn’t spare any opportunity to put the bad deliveries away and notched 22 boundaries in his innings of 193 runs.

As Pujara kept piling on the runs, a last-ditch Australian effort to avoid the series victory was gradually swept out too. The batsman looked invincible at one point of time, and his psychological draining of the opposition’s bowling attack arguably played a critical role in India’s historic series victory. Eventually, he missed out on a double century by only seven runs as he was caught and bowled by Nathan Lyon.

However, the damage was definitely done by then!

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries | Who performed best for India on Test debut in SENA Countries?

Succeeding in Test matches in South Africa, England, Australia and England, jointly known as SENA nations, has been a paramount task for the Indian cricket team. The true mettle of any subcontinental player in the longest format of the game is said to be tested in these countries.

Seasoned professionals find the process of adapting to the alien conditions in SENA quite challenging. Imagine how further difficult it must be for a newbie in whites?

Yet, certain debutants managed to carve an impact in their debut match/series in SENA countries. In this article, Cricblog throws light on some of the most impactful Indian Test debuts in the aforementioned four nations.

1: Ravi Shastri

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries | Who performed best for India on Test debut in SENA Countries? | Opinion on Test cricket
Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries: The current India coach was superb on debut.

The Indian team head coach had played his first Test match at Wellington in New Zealand during India’s tour in 1981. Back then, the gritty batsman played more as a specialist spinner and was sent to the crease at number nine. Shastri was a left-arm spinner renowned for his consistent line-length and additional bounce that he extracted through his height. Slower bowlers do not have it easy in SENA, but Shastri was someone who defied the odds right from the beginning. The spinner scalped three wickets in both the innings to mark a pretty successful first Test match.

He dismissed Jeremy Coney, Martin Snedden and Gary Toup in 28 overs at a commendable economy rate of 1.93 in the first innings. His outing in the second innings was even more fascinating. The Indian team bundled out New Zealand for a mere 100 runs and Shastri took three wickets in three overs to wipe out the tail and prevent the Kiwis from furthering their lead. The head coach dismissed Lance Cairns, Martin Snedden and Gary Toup. Incidentally, all of these batsmen scored a duck in that innings! Certainly, a fascinating start to one’s career in the longest format…

2: Sourav Ganguly

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries | Who performed best for India on Test debut in SENA Countries? | Opinion on Test cricket
Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries: Ganguly, great start to a great career.

Sourav Ganguly was a part of the Indian squad that toured Australia in 1991/92. However, the former skipper couldn’t get a game and had to wait until 1996 to make his Test debut. The southpaw ensured that he made the most of that opportunity in seaming English conditions. Making his debut at the revered Lord’s stadium, Ganguly was uncharacteristically sent out to bat at number three. The player from Kolkata scored a flamboyant century to certify his arrival in international cricket.

Ganguly’s technique looked intact right from the start. It was his ability to carve open gaps on the off-side and collect boundaries aplenty that made the cricketing world take notice of him. The BCCI president lasted for more than seven hours on the field, and notched 131 runs in 301 deliveries. In fact, his innings included 20 boundaries and he was finally bowled over by Alan Mullally as India nearly touched the 300-run mark.

For a player to overcome his nerves and own the stage at the Lord’s at the very commencement of his cricketing career reeked of incredible steel and self-belief; traits that defined Ganguly’s career and life thereafter.

3: Rahul Dravid

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries: Dravid was amazing from the start.

That Lord’s test signified the arrival of another precious jewel of Indian cricket: Rahul Dravid. The batsman from Karnataka was deployed at number seven in his debut innings. He came into bat with the score reading 202-5 and another newbie in Ganguly at the other end. Dravid’s first innings was perhaps a clear testament of his career ahead. He weathered the storm presented by the English bowlers and first got his eye in those arduous circumstances. Dravid gradually started rotating his strike and cautiously avoided fishing the ball outside the off stump.

He induced some much-needed assurance stability to the innings and departed only when India had gained some valuable lead over the opposition. Dravid scored 95 runs in 237 deliveries, in an inning that included six boundaries. He eventually was dismissed caught behind through a delivery from Chris Lewis, but India had already secured a 75-run lead by then. From thereon, the ‘Wall’ continued bailing India out of many such precarious situations right until the very end of his career.

4: Jasprit Bumrah

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries | Who performed best for India on Test debut in SENA Countries? | Opinion on Test cricket
Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries: Bumrah has been superb in SENA

Jasprit Bumrah was unexpectedly handed his cap in the opening Test at Cape Town of the three-match series in South Africa in early 2018. The pacer was slated to infuse some unpredictability in the bowling arsenal, thus handing the team an edge over the opposition. Bumrah struggled at first in terms of adjusting to the appropriate lengths at Newlands and ended up conceding 73 runs in 19 overs in exchange of a solitary wicket in the first innings.

However, the fast bowler learnt swiftly from his errors and made the necessary corrections in the second innings. Bumrah dismissed the key trio of AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock to break the back of the South African innings and bowl them out for merely 130 runs. The fast bowler has hardly gone on to look back from then and emerged as the undisputed spearhead of the Indian bowling attack in all the formats of the game.

5: Shubman Gill

Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries | Who performed best for India on Test debut in SENA Countries? | Opinion on Test cricket
Top 5 Best Indian Test Debuts in SENA Countries: Shubman Gill had an outstanding series.

Shubman Gill was introduced in the Indian playing XI after Prithvi Shaw’s horrid outings in the Adelaide Test match. The talented star got in the groove straightaway through a stroke-filled knock of 45 runs in 65 deliveries in the Melbourne Test. The opener bagged eight boundaries in that innings and gave a fine account of the stuff that one can expect from him going ahead. He stuck around in the second innings too, staying unbeaten at 35 off 36 deliveries to help India chase down the target of 70 runs without any hiccups.

Gill was right on the money in the first innings of Sydney too and even overshadowed senior teammate Rohit Sharma to bag his first half-century in Test cricket. The ease with which he toyed around with the express Aussie pacers explained that there’s something big to expect from him soon. Finally, that massive outing came in the fourth innings of the Brisbane Test. India had to chase 328 runs in three sessions to bag the series and Gill turned out to be the top-scorer in that innings.

His incredibly flamboyant 91 runs from 146 deliveries wonderfully set the stage for Rishabh Pant’s late onslaught. Gill notched eight boundaries and two sixes in his innings as he looked completely facing the fiery Aussie fast bowlers on the juicy Gabba track. His performance was truly a testament to the humungous improvement made by Indian newbies in overseas conditions.

BBL 10 Match 55: REN vs HUR Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | MR vs HH Dream11 Prediction Today | Renegades vs Hurricanes Key Players | MCG Pitch Report

The equation is simple for Hobart Hurricanes. Win, and a playoffs spot is confirmed. Lose, and your fate depends on what happens elsewhere.

The immediate feel looking at this match on paper is that the Hurricanes will be too strong. D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade are reunited at the top, and showed some of their BBL 08 form in their last match. The bowling attack, while not at their best, will be keen for a strong outing in a key game against opposition who’ve had a wretched season.

That opponent is Melbourne Renegades. The men in red have won just seven of 27 matches since lifting the BBL 08 Title two years ago, which is sure to bring about a review by management. Before then, Aaron Finch’s men will look to play spoilsport, just like they did to the Brisbane Heat a year ago.

In what has been nearly two months in the making, the final day of the BBL 10 league stage is upon us. And it has been worth the wait.

As we enter the final day, Australia Day serves up three matches that all have a bearing on the playoff places. The first is where the desperate Brisbane Heat will be looking to right-the-wrongs of the past few seasons, as they look to perform under pressure. In fact, the Heat were in a similar predicament last campaign, where a win against bottom-placed Renegades would seal a playoffs spot. Instead, they buckled.

This time, the task is tougher. They meet the rampaging Perth Scorchers, who have stormed their way into the top two after a terrible start to their season. The Ashton Turner-led side have won eight of their past nine matches and will want to finish the league campaign well to get a possible home Qualifier in Perth (COVID restrictions pending).

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series | Analysis: how India beat Australia in a classic 2020/21 Test series

19th January 2021 will be remembered as one of the most historic moments in the history of Test cricket as team India, saddled with broken bones and battered bodies, showed a never-seen-before zeal to retain the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the second consecutive time on Australian soil.

A series win in down under without the likes of regular skipper Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah not being available at various points, is a zillion times more significant than the 2-1 win in 2018-19.

This victory will be written with a glittering pen in the sporting history of India.

Let us have a closer look at 5 reasons which turned this Border-Gavaskar 2020-21 test series in favour of team India.

1. Ajinkya Rahane’s exemplary leadership

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series | Analysis: how India beat Australia in a classic 2020/21 Test series
Why India Beat Australia: Rahane’s leadership was excellent

India had a horror start to the 4-match series at the Adelaide Oval where they were bundled out for 36 in their second innings. After the infamous defeat in Adelaide, India had to bounce back at the MCG without their skipper and premier batsman Virat Kohli. Not many gave India a chance to come hard after a forgettable loss in the first Test. But against the odds, India’s stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s hundred in the Boxing Day Test led India to an emphatic victory over the hosts.

Not only with the bat, but in the field Rahane was very good with his tactics. The hallmark of his captaincy was his ability to handle his optimal bowling resources, particularly as he was playing with a young squad with not many players having prior experience of playing Test cricket. The way he got the best out of everyone and allowed them to play their natural game uplifted the team’s character to success in alien conditions in Australia.

The Mumbaikar’s field placements were on spot against a strong batting line-up of Australia. Even with the team selection, getting Sundar ahead of Kuldeep, Pant at 5 in SCG ended being master moves by him. His biggest plus was he never stopped believing in his team and gave them ample confidence to approach every Test as a new challenge. As long as the side relies on his gameplan, the side would flourish as a cohesive unit.

2. Young Guns firing for India

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series | Analysis: how India beat Australia in a classic 2020/21 Test series
Why India Beat Australia: Siraj was outstanding.

India’s series win couldn’t have been possible without the efforts of India’s young players whether it was Mohammed Siraj, Shubman Gill, T. Natarajan, or Washington Sundar. Whenever the team needed someone to stand up and deliver, every time a new hero rose in India’s defense.

Mohammed Siraj in particular was the find of the series for the visitors. He bagged the most wickets from the Indian side. Considering whatever happened with him in his personal life and then the racial abuse by the crowd, it made him stronger from inside to show his character on the 22 yards.

Shubman Gill replaced the established opener, Mayank Agarwal, at the top of the order. There was pressure on Gill but he showed that he belongs to this level. He caught everyone’s eyes with his pleasant stroke-making and temperament while opening for India.

Sundar and Natarajan were no different, and , theyon debut both piled up few records for themselves to contribute to the team’s success. All of them took up the challenge to shine in their respective departments and played with utmost dedication to prosper. Their determination has given new recognition to the side.

3. Pant’s addition into the Team

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series | Analysis: how India beat Australia in a classic 2020/21 Test series
Why India Beat Australia: Rishabh Pant was unbelievably good.

When India left out Rishabh Pant from the playing XI of the first Test, many questioned that decision of the team management. However after the team failed in the Adelaide Test, they corrected their mistake by playing the left-handed wicket keeper batsman.

Pant showed why he’s often called the X-factor of the team. The 23-year-old ended the series as India’s highest run-getter with 274 runs including two remarkable half-centuries in Sydney and Brisbane. He also took eight catches behind the sticks. The 40-ball 29 in Melbourne had a lot of intent. The batting finally took shape at the SCG when the southpaw blasted 97 in high-pressure fourth innings. The unbeaten 89 at the Gabba is no less than a hundred as it won India the game and the series. His energy behind the stumps was quite contagious which kept the close-in fielders charged through those long grueling Test sessions. The 23-year-old’s addition to the team was a timely move by the management and captain.

Indeed, Pant’s innate self-belief was the secret of his success in Australia.

4. Persistent Pujara in India’s ‘Defense’

5 Reasons Why India Beat Australia in a Classic Series | Analysis: how India beat Australia in a classic 2020/21 Test series
Why India Beat Australia: Pujara stood strong.

In many ways, India’s number 3 has transformed himself into a human shield to protect the team from the barrage of fiery bowling from Australia’s desperate pace trio. In 2018, Pujara batted and batted and batted to win the series for his country.

After that series, Aussie quicks accepted that it was very difficult for them to get past Pujara and expose the weak link of the Indian batting line-up. This time around he didn’t score as many runs as he wanted but as a senior member of the team, he did his job to utmost perfection. Pujara scored 271 runs in the four-match Test series. But a look at the number of balls he faced paints an entirely different picture. The Saurashtra batsman played out 928 balls and battled out for hours on the 22 yards. His scoring rate wasn’t like a Gill/Rohit/Pant but on most occasions, he provided them the platform and assurance to bat in their natural way.

Most importantly, while playing out the balls, he kept frustrating the Aussie quicks which forced errors and the Indian batsman made the most of it. He battled out tough sessions, also took several hits to the body, many of which he volunteered for, just to protect his wicket. Pujara’s contributions will always remain invaluable to the team’s triumph.

5. Indian spinners outperforming Lyon

One aspect of Team India’s success Down Under was the way the Indian spinners outperformed Australia’s ace spinner, Nathan Lyon. In foreign conditions away from home, the Indian spinners did exceedingly well. Combined, they picked 23 wickets from the 4 games at 27. Out of those 23, Ashwin alone managed to take 12 wickets from 6 innings at an average of 28.8 with a best of 4/55. He kept aside all age-old myths of him not performing in SENA countries. He was a standout spinner of the series from both sides.

To his support, Jadeja took 7 wickets in 3 innings, and Sundar claimed 4 wickets in the only game he played. On the other hand, Australia’s trump card finished with nine scalps at an average of 55.11. Only once in his career he has averaged worse in a home series (57.66, against South Africa in 2016-17). Lyon also conceded 496 runs- the most by a bowler in this series. Both Pujara and Rishabh Pant had success; both scored 100+ runs in the series against him. And those were the battles that probably swung the series in India’s favor.

In comparison to that, the Indian spinners didn’t allow Australia batsman to dictate terms as Ashwin had an upper hand on the opposition star batsman Steve Smith, dismissing him thrice in six innings.

BBL 10 Match 50: SCO vs STA Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | SCO vs STA Dream11 Prediction Today | Scorchers vs Stars Key Players | MCG Pitch Report

Here we go. Match 50 of the BBL 10 promises to be a blockbuster between two of the tournament’s heavyweights.

Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars, both of whom sit in the top five, will be looking to push hard towards a top two finish. It will be interesting to see how the Stars respond after a shock defeat at the hands of the Renegades, where their death bowling was bitterly disappointing. So, can Glenn Maxwell inspire his side to produce a big performance in a big game?

The Scorchers have continued on their merry way in recent games. The move to Melbourne has not hampered their form, with Jhye Richardson and Josh Inglis performing brilliantly yesterday against the Hurricanes. The full four points here will take them to the top of the table, which is an incredible effort given how poorly they started the season.

BBL 10 Match 50: SCO vs STA Preview Dream11: Jhye Richardson has been superb.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Perth Scorchers:

  • Jason Roy returns to the ground where he scored a memorable 180 in an ODI against Australia three years ago. He has made eight double-figure scores in nine knocks in BBL 10, but has only gone on to make one 50+ score. Will today be his day?
  • Liam Livingstone’s last four scores: 54, 67, 17, 26. Can he return to his 50+ form today?
  • Colin Munro suffered a rare failure yesterday (5). Before that, he struck four half-centuries in his previous five matches. Also, he hit a 36-ball 49 against the Stars earlier in BBL 10.
  • Josh Inglis is coming off an excellent 35-ball 58 yesterday vs Hurricanes. Ashton Turner struck 39 (17) vs Stars earlier this season, and will be key as a finisher here, as he strikes at 152.99 in eight innings vs Stars.
  • Andrew Tye loves playing the Stars. He has taken 19 wickets in nine games against them.
  • How good is Jhye Richardson going? His four-wicket haul yesterday (to go with 29*) takes him to 25 wickets in 12 matches in BBL 10. Key player.

Melbourne Stars:

  • Will this be Marcus Stoinis’ day? The Stars will be hoping he improves on his modest record vs Scorchers: 10 inns, 230 runs, avg. 28.75, SR 113.30.
  • Hilton Cartwright struck 58* (56) vs Scorchers on this ground last season.
  • Glenn Maxwell is in a form rut (6, 0, 0, 37, 20, 1). So, one might feel he is due. Against the Scorchers, Maxwell has struck 90 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 130.43. Big game for him.
  • Nick Larkin is in good touch. He has scored 43 (32) and 61* (47) in his last two knocks. Nic Maddison has taken five wickets in his last two games vs Scorchers.
  • Liam Hatcher has taken 13 wickets in nine matches in BBL 10, including 2/17 vs Scorchers. His seam partner, Nathan Coulter-Nile, is coming off 3/41 vs Renegades and will be a wicket-taking (and potentially run-scoring) threat.
  • Adam Zampa will be key. He has five wickets in four games vs Scorchers, and an impressive haul of 18 wickets in 10 games in BBL 10.

Possible Playing 11

The Scorchers named their squad a few days ago, and could stick with the same XI that beat the Hurricanes yesterday.

Perth Scorchers: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Liam Livingstone, 3. Colin Munro, 4. Josh Inglis (wk), 5. Mitchell Marsh, 6. Ashton Turner (c), 7. Aaron Hardie, 8. Jhye Richardson, 9. Andrew Tye, 10. Jason Behrendorff, 11. Fawad Ahmed

Andre Fletcher has been ruled out of this match with a quadricep strain. There is a chance that Hilton Cartwright will open in his place.

Melbourne Stars: 1. Marcus Stoinis, 2. Hilton Cartwright, 3. Nick Larkin, 4. Glenn Maxwell (c), 5. Nic Maddinson, 6. Seb Gotch (wk), 7. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8. Liam Hatcher, 9. Adam Zampa, 10. Billy Stanlake, 11. Zahir Khan

MCG Pitch Report and Weather

The MCG track usually starts off a little tacky. So, teams often look to build an innings, keep wickets in hand and go big in the death overs.

A sunny day with a top of around 27 degrees is forecast for Melbourne.

A tough match to predict, as two evenly-matched sides go head-to-head. The Scorchers’ depth, particularly in the middle order, could count for plenty. However, batting first and scoring in the region of 170 will be key.
