Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months

We have just come across an unusual as well as frustrating year in the form of 2020. Although Cricket happened till February, at a certain point of time, the possibility of cricket being resumed was in jeopardy amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

But thankfully, to the delight of its fans across the world, cricket made a spectacular international return with the start of the English summer. It was such a roller coaster ride as a cricket fan in 2020. We witnessed some hard fought Test matches and some excellent knocks were played by batsmen from different teams throughout the year.

In this article, I am going to pick my top 5 knocks out of them. Here we go.

5. Jermaine Blackwood, 95 (154) vs England, Southampton

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months
Best knocks in Test cricket in 2020: Blackwood was excellent.

England were the certain favourites in the 1st game of the summer much before the start of the series against the West Indies. The fans were confident that England would demolish the visiting WI team even in the absence of Joe Root.

But, we all witnessed something special on the 5th day of this Test match. It was an unexpected yet brilliant end to the game as the Windies team defeated the home side by chasing 200 runs on a difficult 5th day pitch thanks to a superb knock of 95 runs by Jermaine Blackwood.

West Indies had made a terrible start to their chase, losing their first three wickets for just 27 runs. Then the “Blackwood masterclass” took centre stage. He formed two match winning partnerships with Chase and Dowrich. More importantly, he attacked and played shots whenever he got chances, which was effective to cause a fumble in tactics from an inexperienced skipper in Ben Stokes and shifted the match in the favour of the visitors.

4. Azhar Ali 141* (272) vs England, Southampton

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months
Best knocks in Test cricket in 2020: Azhar Ali played a gem of a knock.

If you are the skipper of a visiting Test side to England, the pressure is always on you. And if you have such a poor record in SENA tests for a considerable period of time, your spot as a batsman in the team is also under threat. Azhar Ali had scored just 38 runs from the three innings he played in the first two Tests against England. He was going across, his head was falling and he was getting LBW easily by the English bowlers.

So, you can imagine how much stress he was going through when he went to bat in the 1st innings of the third Test at Southampton. To make things worse, Pakistan were 75 for 5 at one stage in reply to England’s huge total of 583 in their 1st innings. But the way he overcame his weakness by playing with a much straighter bat face and handled the huge pressure was exemplary. He played delicious cuts, powerful pulls and gorgeous drives on his way to an unbeaten 141 and his partnership of 138 runs with Rizwan was pivotal for Pakistan to reach a respectable total of 273.

3. Jos Buttler 75 (101) vs Pakistan, Manchester

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months
Best knocks in Test cricket in 2020: Buttler stepped up brilliantly.

This knock is perhaps the best I have seen from a wicket-keeper batsman in recent times. Jos Buttler proved to be a “match winner” once again by playing this knock. Chasing a challenging total of 277 runs on the most difficult 4th day wicket we had in the English summer, England were almost on the verge of a defeat after losing five wickets for just 117 runs. The way the ball was taking off the pitch and the sharp turn Yasir was getting, it was almost impossible for England to win from that stage.

However, Buttler was quick to realize that they couldn’t take the game in to the fifth day and hence the only option left for him and co. was to attack. He exactly did the same by attacking the Pakistani bowlers especially Yasir Shah and scored some quick 50-60 runs supported by Woakes before tea. In the last session, he batted with extreme confidence and also guided Chris Woakes to perfection. Woakes was also fabulous for his 84, but without the intent and pro-activeness of Buttler, England couldn’t have won that game. His counterattack played the major role in England’s victory.

2. Ajinkya Rahane 112 (223) vs Australia, Melbourne

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months
Best knocks in Test cricket in 2020: Rahane was incredible.

After a horrible batting performance in the pink ball Test at Adelaide, the morale of the Indian team did certainly hit a new low. Added to that, the absence of Virat Kohli; the premier batsman of the Indian team, was not encouraging at all for them.

In such a scenario, scoring a match winning century on a MCG pitch which had enough in it to assist the Aussie seamers, was a tremendous job. The partnership of 57 runs between Rahane and Pant gave the momentum India needed and that of 121 runs between Rahane and Jadeja ensured a big lead for India, which proved to be crucial in India’s victory. Having faced 223 balls, Rahane hit 12 gorgeous boundaries on his way to a magnificent knock of 112. He remained calm, battled hard and showed enormous courage as well as temperament. His knock was instrumental in writing the script of one of the best Test match victories in overseas in the history of Indian cricket.

1. Kane Williamson 251 (412) vs West Indies, Hamilton

Top 5 Best Knocks in Test Cricket in 2020 | Looking back at the best Test batting knocks over the past 12 months
Best knocks in Test cricket in 2020: Williamson was superb.

When the first look of the pitch of the Seddon Park was revealed, we all were taken aback by the amount of grass it had. It was almost impossible to spot the difference between the pitch and the outfield. On such a deck, playing a marathon innings of 251 needs the skill of the highest order. Also, the West Indies team had done really well in similar conditions in England.

Kane Williamson came to bat after the fall of an early wicket in the form of Will Young. The ball was doing enough and the Windies seamers were bowling in tight lines. Williamson was resilient, played out the new ball really well and capitalized later when the ball got old and soft. He hit 34 classic fours and two gorgeous sixes and showcased his skills to time the ball with perfection throughout his innings. It was one of the neatest knocks I have ever seen on a green pitch.

So, this is my list of top 5 test knocks of 2020. Do any others come to mind? Have your say!

BBL 10 Match 38: SIX vs THU Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | SIX vs THU Dream11 Prediction Today | Sixers vs Thunder Key Players | Canberra Pitch Report

Match 38 of BBL 10 will be an absolute beauty; the clash of the table toppers – Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder in the Sydney derby. The number one ranked side on the points table, Sydney Sixers, will lock horns against the number two side, Sydney Thunder. Both the sides have won 6 and lost 3 games but the Sixers are ahead of the Thunder by two bash boost points.

Sydney Sixers have played good cricket till now. Apart from their top order, their players have performed really well. Their top order has been very inconsistent with Josh Phillippe, James Vince, and Jack Edwards failing to perform as per the expectations. Skipper Daniel Hughes and veteran Dan Christian have been the performers, while Christian has been in excellent form.

Their bowlers have performed brilliantly. Ben Dwarshuis bowled well in the initial games and now Jackson Bird has been picking wickets in the power play while Steeve O’Keefe and Carlos Braithwaite have been in good form too. Jake Ball since joining the squad has been picking wickets regularly, which makes for a brilliant battle against the strong Thunder batting lineup.

Sydney Thunder has been very consistent as a team. Their batters are doing well and bowlers have been excellent. Alex Hales has been in red hot form with the bat, striking at 160+ this season while Usman Khawaja showed signs of coming back to form in the last two games. Callum Ferguson has also played some really good knocks.

An area where the Thunder have improved this season is the middle order, with Sam Billings striking form last game vs the Scorchers. Add Ben Cutting and Daniel Sams, and the middle order looks good. Also, Tanveer Sangha, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green and Daniel Sams have been exceptional in the bowling department and they’ll look to perform the same way going into this game.

Ben McDermott and Dawid Malan have played well with some assistance from Colin Ingram while Tim David played a few good knocks initially. Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers will go face to face in the 35th game of BBL 10 on Sunday. Sydney Sixers are second on the points table with 5 wins in 8 games while Heat is at 6th position with 4 wins in 8 games.

Sydney Sixers have performed consistently till now and they’ll want to continue the same. They’ll need some runs from their top order, especially from James Vince, who has played only a couple of good knocks so far in the tournament. They’ll also want Carlos Braithwaite to perform with the bat too. Everything else seems good for them with different players performing in different games with their batting and bowling have been consistent till now.

Brisbane Heat, on the other hand, started badly with 3 defeats in the first three games and losing one game by just 1 run but they’ve won their last three games and are looking confident as a team. Chris Lynn is back after he was injured during practice while the return of Joe Burns and Joe Denly has strengthened their batting order which was looking very fragile initially. Baby Bash Max Bryant is looking in good touch too. Their bowlers are in great form with Mujeeb leading the charts, while Steketee and Wildermuth have been good too.

The Rise in Popularity of Women’s Cricket

The Rise in Popularity of Women’s Cricket | Discussing the rise in popularity and growth of women’s cricket

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world and it’s the national sport of a number of countries. The most famous occasions in the sport are traditionally associated with men’s game. However, women’s cricket has become more popular in recent years, with the rise of T20 leagues and increased competitiveness in international cricket.

This growth in popularity started in earnest with the inauguration of the Women’s Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia in 2015. This Twenty20 competition has a significant following across the world and some of the matches are screened live by Seven Network and Fox Cricket. Australia is not the only country to be making big strides in women’s cricket. Nations like India and England and also investing in the development of a game that has come a long way since the first matches were played in the 18th century.

The Rise in Popularity of Women’s Cricket | Discussing the rise in popularity and growth of women's cricket

Origins

You may not realise it but women’s cricket is not a new addition to the world. The first game was played in 1745 when the villages of Bramley and Hambledon near Guildford in the UK played against each other. In Australia, Lily Poulett-Harris created the first female cricket league in 1894. She also captained the Oyster Cove team. As the years passed, women’s cricket continued to develop and the International Women’s Cricket Council was formed in 1958. The council’s role was to coordinate the women’s game in countries across the world including Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

Of course, the early days of the sport were not subject to the same level of attention that today’s professional version of the game is. However, they did provide the foundation for tournaments like the WBBL. The problems that occurred across the world in 2020 may have disrupted the game, as they did with most sports. However, there still looks to be a positive future for the game.

Continued interest in women’s cricket

The positive outlook for the future of women’s cricket comes from the fact that there is a high level of interest in the game, from young girls who are inspired by their heroes to fans of cricket who appreciate the skills that today’s players display.

With this in mind, the England and Wales Cricket Board has approved the investment of £20 million worth of funding over the next five years to help develop the women’s game. There are also clear signs that India is embracing it, especially since the team’s appearance in the 2020 World Cup Final – a final that saw over 80,000 fans attend the MCG to witness a great Australia team achieve victory. Despite India’s loss to Australia, it was a big step forward for them. This is an important advancement in a country that is so dedicated to its love of cricket.

The Hundred is also delivering great results for the women’s game, and the first ever Women’s IPL is set to kick off in 2023. With great broadcasting rights and media coverage, this growth can only inspire young girls to take up cricket, which leaves the game’s future in good stead.

BBL 10 Match 33: STR vs REN Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | STR vs REN Dream11 Prediction Today | Strikers vs Renegades Key Players | Adelaide Pitch Report

Three days after Adelaide Strikers handed Melbourne Renegades yet another heavy defeat in BBL 10, the two sides meet once again at the Adelaide Oval in an important game for both sides, but for different reasons.

The Strikers, with four wins and four losses, are aiming for consistency. Two games in quick succession against the struggling Renegades is a good opportunity to find some form, especially given the first meeting ended with an easy 60-run win for the Alex Carey-led side. However, the Strikers need to guard against complacency, as the capable Stars, Scorchers and Heat are nearby on the BBL 10 points table.

For the Renegades, it is a question of where to from here. Such is their sorry story in BBL 10 their poor total of 111 on a good batting pitch three nights ago was in fact their fourth-lowest score of their tournament, as they were rolled for three sub-100 scores previously. The absence of Shaun Marsh, who is on paternity leave in Perth, reduces their depth even further, and they must dig deep to find the confidence needed to pull off an upset here.

BBL 10 Match 33: Bad times for Aaron Finch and the Renegades

  • The shift to the middle order has worked well for Jake Weatherald. He has scored 34* (24) and 51 (25) in his past two games. The 51 came against the Renegades.
  • Alex Carey has scored the most runs for the Strikers so far in BBL 10 (216 runs, avg. 36.00, SR 118.03).
  • Jono Wells failed three days ago (score of 2), but has a decent overall record for the Strikers against Renegades (7 inns, 154 runs, avg. 30.80).
  • Wes Agar continues to be in the wickets. The seamer has taken 14 wickets in eight matches in BBL 10, which includes 3/23 against the Renegades. Peter Siddle also took three-for against the Renegades three nights ago.
  • Danny Briggs has taken seven wickets in his last five matches, including four in his last three at Adelaide.
  • Rashid Khan has taken 11 wickets in seven matches against the Renegades.

Melbourne Renegades:

  • Cometh the hour, cometh Aaron Finch? The Renegades and Australia skipper is struggling in BBL 10, with just 132 runs at an average of 18.85, including a golden duck vs Strikers. The Renegades desperately need him to perform here.
  • Mackenzie Harvey was the Renegades’ top-scorer against Strikers three nights ago with 34.
  • Beau Webster, like many of his teammates, is struggling in BBL 10. However, he played well against the Strikers last season, with scores of 49 (33) and 36* (26).

AUS vs IND 3rd Test Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | AUS vs IND 3rd Test Dream11 Prediction Today | Australia vs India 3rd Test Key Players | SCG Pitch Report

India’s superb victory at Melbourne, one of their greatest triumphs overseas, has the much-hyped 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy perfectly poised at 1-1. Many experts, including the likes of Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh, thought that India were standing down the barrell of 4-0 after that day in Adelaide, which preceded the loss of key players Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami.

It was a ruthless display by the Indians at the MCG, where they didn’t give Australia an inch. The Australians tried to fight and crawl to achieve parity, but just as they looked to make some progress, Ajinkya Rahane’s men stopped them in their traps.

So, it makes for a great third Test. However, the build-up has almost been anything but the cricket. The emergence of another wave of COVID-19 infections in Sydney has put the presence of a crowd at the SCG under significant debate, with the capacity now limited to 25%. Also, fans from certain suburbs considered as “COVID-19 hotspots” will not be allowed to attend, and fans who do attend will need to wear masks.

As a result, it is an SCG Test that will be very different to those we are accustomed to. But, for Australia, it is about bouncing back as fast as they can, as a defeat here means that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will remain in the subcontinent. Eyes will certainly be on Steve Smith, where he will look to play a more positive style, particularly against the wily and skilful Ravi Ashwin. And, with Rohit Sharma and David Warner back, and Navdeep Saini and Will Pucovski set to debut, some new storylines are just waiting to be written.

A potentially great Test match is upon us.

AUS vs IND 3rd Test Preview Dream11: Steve Smith to bounce back?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Australia:

  • Can David Warner hit his straps right away? Australia have missed their dynamic opening batsman, who has a wonderful record at the SCG. In eight Tests on this ground, Warner has struck 732 runs at an average of 66.54, with four centuries.
  • The big question, though, will be whether Steve Smith can break his lean run of form. Remarkably, Australia’s great batsman has struck just 10 runs this series (0, 1*, 1 and 8), and the spotlight will be on him. Like Warner, Smith has a superb record at the SCG: 10 inns, 611 runs, avg. 67.88.
  • Marnus Labuschagne, currently Australia’s highest run-scorer this series with 129 (avg. 32.25), struck a superb double hundred (215) on this ground vs New Zealand a year ago. However, that was a depleted NZ attack without Southee and Boult, so a big effort is needed here against the likes of Bumrah and co.
  • Pat Cummins will be crucial to Australia’s hopes. He has a great overall record against India (32 wickets, avg. 25.06), and enjoys bowling at the SCG (12 wickets, avg. 24.42).
  • Josh Hazlewood has taken seven wickets this series, which is dominated by his 5/8 at Adelaide. So, can he deliver at the SCG? He has taken 16 wickets on this ground at an average of 27.13.
  • Both Mitchell Starc (19 wickets at 37.84) and Nathan Lyon (36 wickets at 37.63) average nearly 40 on this ground. However, Lyon enjoyed his best performance at the SCG last year, taking 10/118 in the Test against New Zealand.

India:

  • Rohit Sharma returns for India. Can he make an immediate impact? He averages 31.00 in five Tests in Australia, so India will be hoping for a better return.
  • Shubman Gill looked very impressive on debut in the second Test. He struck 45 and 35* at an overall strike rate of 79.20.
  • Ajinkya Rahane is coming off one of his finest ever Test knocks at the MCG. He will be key once again in blunting Australia’s attack.
  • Cheteshwar Pujara has had a quiet series to date (63 runs, avg. 15.75). So, India will be hoping he can produce the same kind of form at the SCG that he did in 2018/19, where he scored 193. Rishabh Pant scored 159* in the same Test.
  • Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin have been excellent in this series. Jadeja scored a half-century and took three wickets in Melbourne. Ashwin has taken 10 wickets, and has had the better of Smith. An excellent battle awaits.
  • How well is Jasprit Bumrah bowling? The superb India seamer has taken eight wickets this series at an average of just 23.62. Mohammad Siraj will also be key, after taking five wickets at 15.40 in a very impressive performance on debut.

Stats and Facts

  • Since the start of 2018/19 Test series, the highest score by an Australian batsman vs India was Marcus Harris’ 75. In that time, Indian batsmen have scored six centuries.
  • Steve Smith is without a century in his last 14 Test innings, which is his longest drought since the start of his Test career, where he went 22 innings without a Test century.
  • Australia are scoring at just 2.52 per over this series, which is their slowest-scoring rate in a home series this century.
  • Only Stuart Broad (12) has dismissed David Warner more times than R Ashwin in Tests (9 dismissals).
  • Lyon needs six wickets to reach the 400 mark in Test cricket. Cheteshwar Pujara is 97 runs short of the 6,000 mark in Tests
  • India lost Ishant Sharma before the series, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami after one Test and will now be without Umesh Yadav, which makes their win in Melbourne all-the-more impressive.

Possible Playing 11

Australia are yet to confirm their XI, but it looks like David Warner and Will Pucovski will open the batting. After Cameron Green’s promising showing under pressure in Melbourne, either Matt Wade or Travis Head could give way.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Will Pucovski, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Matthew Wade, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood

India have confirmed their XI. Rohit Sharma is back, and will partner Gill at the top. Navdeep Saini will debut, replacing the injured Umesh Yadav.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shubman Gill, 3. Cheteshwar Pujara, 4. Ajinkya Rahane (c), 5. Hanuma Vihari, 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. R Ashwin, 9. Navdeep Saini, 10. Mohammed Siraj, 11. Jasprit Bumrah

SCG Pitch Report and Weather

Rain has often ruined SCG Tests in recent years. Three of the last six Tests on this ground have ended in a draw. With persistent rain in the lead-up to the Test, there were fears that the weather would play spoilsport again. However, the forecast looks promising, with only a few showers predicted throughout the Test.

With regards to the pitch, curator Adam Lewis has promised a hard track with plenty of grass. So, expect the seamers to have a strong say on the opening few days, with the spinners to also enjoy the bounce on offer. The batsmen will have to play very well to score their runs.

A lot depends on how well Steve Smith performs. It is clear that Australia rely heavily on his runs, and if he gets going against an inexperienced Indian seam attack, it will hold Australia in great stead. This should be a cracker of a Test.

It’s a clash between the two teams placed in the bottom half of the standings as the Adelaide Strikers lock horns with the struggling Melbourne Renegades on their home turf of the Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide Strikers have been sloppy for the past two games having lost to the Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Sixers. They batted first but couldn’t set a match-winning sc0re as they lost both the matches with two or more overs to spare. The Alex Carey-led side will he hoping to get things into place and hope that they don’t slip up further down the standings.

On the other hand, the Renegades are replicating their performance from the previous season and have won a solitary match in the first 7 games. They have been bowled for a total of under 100 3 times this season, including the previous game against the Scorchers. With the Shaun Marsh and Rilee Roussow ruled out the Renegades will find it tough to make a come back, so a big effort is required.

The two times are meeting for the first time this season but the Strikers won both the meetings in the previous season.

The side second from the top of the table takes on the side second from the bottom as the Sydney Thunder lock horns with the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The Sydney Thunder have won 5 out of their last 5 games after losing the opening match of the season. The Callum Ferguson-led side is the most in-form side of the BBL 10 and has pulled victory from the jaws of defeat on more than a couple of occasions, including the last time they met the Brisbane-based side. Daniel Sams and Ben Cutting scored 91 runs in the last eight overs and helped win the game from an unlikely position.

The Brisbane Heat started the campaign poorly and were winless in their first 3 games. However, they have 2 out of their 3 games, including the last game against the Sydney Sixers where Pierson and Wildermuth’s hitting at the fag-end was the key for the Heat.
