Top 5 Batting Performances at the MCG in BGT Matches

Top 5 Batting Performances at the MCG in BGT Matches | Looking back at the best batting performances in Border-Gavaskar Trophy at MCG

In my last article, I had picked the best five bowling spells at the MCG in BGT.

Similarly, there have been some seriously good knocks played by the batsmen from both Australia and India at this historic venue in the BGT. So, during the 2020 the Boxing Day Test, I am going to pick only five of those splendid knocks on the basis of quality, which I think are definitely some of the most impactful knocks in the BGT. Here we go.

5. Michael Hussey 89 (151), 2011

My respect for Michael Hussey got amplified after this magnificent knock. Perhaps he played one of the most underrated innings of his Test career at a point when Australia were reeling at 27-4 in the 2nd innings and had an overall lead of just 78 runs with 6 wickets in hand. First, he formed a brilliant partnership of 115 runs with Ricky Ponting for the 5th wicket. After Ponting got out, he batted along with the tail-enders for more than 26 overs before being dismissed by a terrific delivery from Zaheer Khan. He played drives, his signature pulls, lofted shots against spinners on his way to a crucial innings of 89 runs which played the most important part in Australia’s victory by 122 runs in this match.

4. Virat Kohli 169 (272), 2014

Embed from Getty Images

This innings is considered as one of the finest innings ever played by an Indian on Aussie soil. Australia had posted a huge total of 530 after batting first in this Test. So, India needed a big daddy hundred to even come close to that total and Virat did exactly that.

Although India got a good start thanks to half century from Murali Vijay and supportive knocks from Dhawan and Pujara, it was that marathon partnership of 262 runs between Virat and Ajinkya Rahane which ensured that India wouldn’t lose the plot. Coming to the knock from Kohli, it was dynamic as well as a disciplined one. Virat played every delivery as per its merit and tackled a really good attack comprising Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon and Shane Watson brilliantly. He hit 18 fours which included several beautiful cover drives, flicks and pulls and I can say it was Virat Kohli at his very best that day.

3. Ricky Ponting 257 (458), 2003

Embed from Getty Images

This was the 3rd Test match of the series and the visitors were already ahead by a margin of 1-0. Batting first, India had posted a decent total of 366 thanks to a blistering knock of 195 by Virender Sehwag.

Ponting entered the middle after the fall of an early wicket in the form of Justin Langer. What followed next was supreme dominance of the Australian captain over the Indian bowling. He came when Australia were 30 for 1 and got out when the total was 555, can you believe it? It was such a marathon knock. He scored a mammoth 257 runs which assured a big lead of 192 runs for Australia in the first innings. His innings involved 25 gorgeous boundaries and the way he pierced the gaps through the off side that day, was a sight to behold. His innings was instrumental in Australia’s victory by 9 wickets and he was also rewarded as the ‘man of the match’ for this match-winning knock.

2. Virender Sehwag 195 (233), 2003

Embed from Getty Images

In Test cricket, the basic strategy for a top-order batsman is to play out the difficult new-ball spell and make the road easier for the middle order. But, Virender Sehwag had his own methods of making the ball old. The dashing opener got hit on his helmet on a couple of occasions by Brett Lee, survived a runout chance too. Perhaps it was destined for a Sehwag masterclass at the historic venue on the very first day of the game.

His innings involved 25 fours and 5 huge sixes, which signified how brutally he hammered the Aussie bowling that day. He played shots all around the park and went after all the bowlers especially Stuart Macgill and raced to 195 off just 233 balls in the first day itself. Although his innings went in vain as India lost the game, I would term it as the most dominant knock by an Indian batsman in Australia.

1. Sachin Tendulkar 116 (191), 1999

Embed from Getty Images

A batsman from the defeated team being rewarded as the ‘man of the match’ is not something we often see, do we? Such was the artistry of this knock from the master that he was awarded despite India being defeated convincingly.

As we all know, Sachin was the lone warrior for India in the 90s on most of the occasions and this was not an exception too. Sachin went to bat when India had lost both the openers at a score of just 11. The wickets kept falling at the other end, but he led from the front as the skipper and fought extremely well. He respected the good deliveries and punished the bad ones on his way to a well compiled 116. This marvellous knock included 9 classic fours and a single huge six off Shane Warne. Moreover, his innings proved to be pivotal for India to avoid the follow on and thus saved them from a possible humiliating defeat.

SA vs SL 1st Test Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | SA vs SL 1st Test Dream11 Prediction Today | South Africa vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Key Players | Supersport Park Centurion Pitch Report

There was a dark cloud looming over this Test series after Cricket South Africa saw a series of mishaps. After the limited over series against England got postponed, another domestic match got abandoned after five players were tested positive for the coronavirus. However, with this series being a part of the World Test Championship, the two boards involved agreed to continue with the series.

Sri Lanka became the first team from the sub-continent to win a Test Series in South Africa when they toured last. It will be interesting to see if they can replicate the success again with a more experienced Batting line-up and Mickey Arthur as a coach who knows South African conditions quite well.

However, South Africa has got players in red hot form and, they will look to end the year on a high after losing the Test series against England 3-1.

SA vs SL 2nd Test Preview Dream11: de Kock will be key.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

South Africa

  • Quinton de Kock will be playing his first Test match as South Africa Test Captain and will be looking forward to improving his numbers after losing all three T20Is against England. In his last series against Srilanka at Home, he scored 223 runs that included three half-centuries. He also loves playing at Supersport Park and scored 474 runs at an average of 67.71.
  • Faf Du Plessis looks all set to play his new role with the South African side after giving up on his captaincy duties. The former captain likes playing against the Srilankan side and has scored 667 runs in 9 matches, both home and away. However, he only averages 29.82 at Supersport Park, and with the form of late he has shown in the last few months in the IPL, we can expect him to get into Test mode and get a win for the home side.
  • Aiden Markram is eyeing a spot in the South African side after missing out on his previous opportunities. The Right Hander has shown why he is rated so highly in the South African domestic circuit by scoring 458 runs (75, 113, 149, 121) in his four recent innings in the recently concluded domestic four-day competition.
  • Anrich Nortje is the all new pace sensation from South Africa who will be looking to make a mark in the series in the absence of Kagiso Rabada. He has taken 19 wickets from 6 matches and would like to continue his red hot form.
  • Lungi Ngidi looked out of form in the T20Is against England but he has 15 wickets in the five test matches he has played so he would like to be at his best.

Sri Lanka

  • Kusal Perera was the star for Sri Lanka when they toured here last and adjudged Man of the series for his heroics. Due to injuries, he has missed most Test matches since then and would be looking to put another spectacular performance in this series.
  • Dimuth Karunaratne: Sri Lankan Captain has a healthy average of 43.85 and has scored 570 runs in 7 matches, both home and away. The record shows Srilankan batsmen have struggled at Supersports park, so the onus will be on the captain to score some big runs and lead the team from the front.
  • Wanindu Hasaranga has always shown glimpses of what he can do at the International stage in the few white-ball games he has played. He was also brilliant in the recently concluded Lanka premier league. With South Africa’s recent struggle against quality spin, Wanindu Hasaranga will play a huge for Sri Lanka in his debut series.
  • Vishwa Fernando is one of the most under-rated Sri Lankan bowlers in this format of the game. He picked up 12 wickets and played a crucial role in the series win in February 2019.

Stats and Facts

  • Playing at Home, South Africa is the favorite to win the series. However, they won’t be taking Sri Lanka lightly as he has lost their four Test matches against them.
  • In the ICC Men’s Test Ranking, Sri Lanka is placed at the fifth position while the host is at the sixth position.
  • Sri Lanka has never won a Test match at Centurion.

Possible Playing 11

BBL 10 Match 15: SIX vs STA Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | SIX vs STA Dream11 Prediction Today | Sixers vs Stars Key Players | Carrara Oval Pitch Report

It’s a repeat of the previous year’s final and arguably the biggest clash of the league stage in BBL 10 as the Melbourne Stars lock horns with the Sydney Sixers at the Carrara Oval. The teams are packed with batting heavyweights and there can be the best power hitting on display in a marquee clash on Boxing Day evening.

Both the teams are on a roll and their position in the top-half of the table justifies the fact. The Stars are the only unbeaten side of the tournament and rain helped their cause in the previous game against Perth Scorchers, after they won their opening two games. While the Sixers stamped their authority as one of the strongest sides in the competition with two comfortable victories in the last 2 games.

In the previous game, a stable 46 from stand-in skipper Hughes alongwith Christian’s whirlwind half-century meant that Sixers posted a total of 177 on the board after just scoring 19 runs in the first four overs in which they lost both the openers. Also, they were 58/3 in the 12th over, before an excellent last eight overs changed the game.

O’Keefe, Braithwaite and Manenti chipped in with a couple of wickets each as they restricted the Strikers 139 and won their 2nd consecutive game.

The Stars won the first 2 games against Brisbane Heat and the green side of Sydney. Against the Scorchers, the match was interrupted post the first innings due to rain.

  2. Jordan Silk has the highest average of 50.5 in the matches between the two sides.
  3. Ben Dwarshuis has picked 13 wickets against the Stars.
  4. Nicholas Pooran didn’t bat on his BBL debut as rain played spoilsport. However, eyes will be on him against Sixers.
  5. In the rain-curtailed season-finale, Josh Philippe was adjudged as the player of the match as he scored 52 off 29 balls against the same opposition. He is in good form in the season so far.
  6. Dan Christian scored the 2nd fastest fifty in BBL history in 15 balls against the Strikers in the previous game and will be a virat cog against the Stars.

Stats and Facts

  • Both the teams have won 7 games each in the head-to-head battle. However, the Sixers have won the last 3 games.
  • The two teams faced each other 4 times last season and the Stars were only victorious once.
  • This is the first time that the match between these two star-studded teams will be played at a venue not named Melbourne Cricket Ground or Sydney Cricket Ground.

BBL 10 Match 14: THU vs REN Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report

BBL 10 Match 14: THU vs REN Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | THU vs REN Dream11 Prediction Today | Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Key Players | Manuka Oval Pitch Report

It’s festival time as Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Renegades on the Boxing Day double header in the Big Bash League. The focus in Australia will be on the 2nd Test between India and Australia at the ‘G’ in Melbourne, but as the tournament progresses and takes interesting twists and turns, the BBL will grab a few eyeballs.

It’s a battle between the two teams sitting in 5th and 6th place respectively in the standings. Despite a promising start for the Thunder, both the teams will be aiming to climb up the ladder and not leave a lot of work to do for the latter half of the tournament.

Melbourne Renegades began the tournament on an impressive note against the Perth Scorchers but post that victory their performance has tapered off. They were bowled for a paltry total of 60 as they were annihilated by the defending champions Sydney Sixers.

In the following game against the Hurricanes they were better than their previous outing but still couldn’t bag a victory. Harper and Roussouw scored fifties as the Red Melbourne outfit resurrected after being reduced to 4-2 in the absence of regular skipper Aaron Finch. The bowling was below par as 4 of the 5 bowlers conceded at more than 8.7 RPO.

On the other hand, the Thunder have had a completely contrast outcome in the tourney. They lost their opening game against the Melbourne Stars but recovered in the following games against Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers and have 7 points from 3 games so far. In the previous game against the 3-time champions from Perth, they chased a target of 153 in the final over on the back of captain Ferguson’s 61. He was aided by cameos from Cutting and Davies in the back-end of the innings.

BBL 10 Match 14: THU vs REN Preview Dream11 – Ferguson is in good form.

Key Players

  1. Noor Ahmad became the youngest player to play the BBL. He was the only bowler to concede at less than 8.7 RPO in the Renegades’ last match.
  2. Aaron Finch has the most runs in Thunder-Renegades matches (276, avg. 34.50).
  3. Shaun Marsh vs Sydney Thunder: 7 matches, 293 runs, avg. 58.60, SR 140.19.
  4. Alex Hales has scored two ducks in a row. Can he deliver today? He comes up against a side whom he scored 68 (38) and 31 (25) against last season.
  5. Callum Ferguson has the 3rd best average in BBL 10 so far, with 57.50 (among the batsmen with minimum 100 runs).
  6. Sam Harper was the leading run-getter for the Renegades in the previous edition of the Big Bash League. This season he didn’t fire in the first two games but scored an unbeaten 66 against the Hurricanes.
  7. Kane Richardson is the leading wicket-taker for the Renegades in BBL 10 picking 5 wickets in the season so far.
  8. Daniel Sams has been a vital cog in Thunder’s campaign so far. He has averaged 19 with the ball and has scalped 5 wickets and with the bat he strikes at 250.
  9. Adam Milne bowled at an economy rate of 4.25 in the first and only match he played. He was injured in the previous matches and is expected to be back in the mix on the Boxing Day.
  10. Alex Ross has an average of 62 against the Renegades.

Stats and Facts

  • The head-to-head record between the two sides is pretty lopsided as Renegades have 9 matches while the Thunder have just won a couple of them. However, in the last season both the teams won a game each.
  • Thunder have never won while batting first against the Renegades.

Possible Playing 11

Melbourne Renegades: Aaron Finch is expected to be back in the setup and it will be interesting to see where he bats in the middle order. Imad Wasim will also feature and that means that Renegades will be going in with a full-strength side.

Probable Playing XI: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. Shaun Marsh, 3. Sam Harper (wk), 4. Rilee Rossouw, 5. Mohammad Nabi, 6. Imad Wasim, 7. Jake Fraser-McGurk, 8. Beau Webster, 9. Kane Richardson, 10. Josh Lalor, 11. Peter Hatzoglou.

Sydney Thunder: The Thunder could look at playing the same XI that beat the Scorchers.

Probable Playing XI: 1. Usman Khawaja, 2. Alex Hales, 3. Callum Ferguson (c), 4. Oliver Davies, 5. Ben Cutting, 6. Daniel Sams, 7. Baxter Holt (WK), 8. Chris Green, 9. Adam Milne, 10. Nathan McAndrew, 11. Tanveer Sangha

Manuka Oval Pitch Report and Weather

156 is the average first innings total at this venue in BBL 10. The pitch is expected to be a sporting one. There are 40% chances of rain and that might affect the match.

5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series

5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series | Looking back at the best debut performances in Border-Gavaskar Test matches

Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj will join Cameron Green as Test debutants in the current Border-Gavaskar series. Making one’s way into the international arena in the toughest of circumstances is not the ideal start that any young player would desire for.

Most individuals prefer facing rather easier opponents in their first match, which allows them to get their eye in and gradually build confidence before heading towards the tougher challenges ahead. However, some cricketers have managed to create quite an impact whilst debuting in the Border-Gavaskar series over the last 25 years. Cricblog tries to go down the memory lane and elaborate on five such historically memorable performances.

1. Michael Clarke

Embed from Getty Images

Former Australian skipper Michael Clarke made his debut in the whites during Australia’s tour to India in 2004/05.

Moreover, Clarke put forth a testament of his sheer class and skillset straightaway. Batting in the middle-order, the Aussie scored 151 runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium with a strike rate of 60.89 in his very first Test innings. His impeccable technique against spinners held him in good stead against the Indian attack throughout the course of the series.

Clarke went on to amass scores of 91 and 73 in the two innings of the third match at Vidarbha to ensure that Ricky Ponting’s men secured a historical series victory on Indian soil. Overall, Clarke scored 400 runs in four matches at an average of 57.14. However, his most remarkable outing from the series might be in the fourth game at Wankhede.

Rolling over his arm, Clarke delivered an extraordinary spell of 6.2-0-9-6 as he dismissed the likes of Rahul Dravid, Mohammed Kaif, Dinesh Karthik and blew away the Indian lower-order in the second innings of the match. This was certainly the ‘all-round’ debut that Michael Clarke must have set his sights on.

2. Jason Krejza

Embed from Getty Images

Jason Krejza didn’t don the Baggy Green for long, but he surely made a wonderful start to his career. The off-spinner made his test debut at Vidarbha in the fourth match of the 2009 Border-Gavaskar series. He was right on the money from the start, scalping Dravid’s dismissal in the veteran’s second delivery of the first innings.

The spinner followed that up with a brilliant rampage, taking eight wickets in the innings as he dismissed every single batsman except Murali Vijay and Sachin Tendulkar. However, it wasn’t an eight-wicket haul that provided no breathing space to the Indian batsmen as Krejza as the likes of Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni scored half-centuries along with Tendulkar’s 109 to take India to 441.

Krejza returned in the second innings to take four more wickets, and was by far the only Aussie bowler who looked incisive and threatening enough to stop the home team’s run-feast. India won the game by 172 runs but Krejza’s 12-wicket haul in his first match in whites is surely an unforgettable feat.

3. Shikhar Dhawan

5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series | Looking back at the best debut performances in Border-Gavaskar Test matches
5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series: Shikhar Dhawan was superb vs Australia on debut.

Shikhar Dhawan had to undergo the tumultuous tenure of domestic cricket for a long period of time before he got his first national team call-up. But, boy did he make that count?

India was already cruising along the 2012-13 Border Gavaskar series as Clarke had led the Aussies to India. Having won the first two matches, the team must have already been staring towards a complete whitewash and Dhawan ensured that it happened through his stroke-filled, flamboyant debut innings at Mohali.

Australia had notched up an impressive 408 in the first innings but Dhawan carried out an onslaught with his knock of 187 runs in merely 174 deliveries that included a massive 33 boundaries along with two sixes. He spared no mercy for any of the bowlers, taking them all to cleaners and propelling India to take an impressive 91 runs’ lead in the first innings.

Unfortunately, he picked up a minor injury during the course of the innings and didn’t feature either in the second innings or the fourth Test. However, Dhawan’s ferociously dominating innings had sealed India’s authority over the series and hence an Aussie comeback was wiped out of equation.

4. Josh Hazlewood

Embed from Getty Images

Josh Hazlewood burst into the international scene with his incredibly disciplined fast-bowling in the second test at Brisbane during India’s tour to Australia in 2014/15. The Virat Kohli-led side had fought tooth and nail for a victory in the first game and despite losing the encounter, headed to the next contest with head high in confidence.

However, Hazlewood debuted in the same game tore apart the Indian batting order with his fantastic ability to hit the top of off stump persistently.

The Brisbane track offered a significant amount of bounce and Hazlewood capitalized on the same to notch a five-wicket haul in his very first outing in test cricket. Four of his dismissals in that innings was caught by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, displaying his ability to put the batsmen into two minds by hitting the accurate line-length regularly.

More importantly, Hazlewood had secured the prized scalps of the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhoni along with Ravichandran Ashwin; thus effectively breaking the back of the Indian batting lineup. He took a total of 12 wickets in three matches in that series, playing a key role in Australia’s 2-0 overall victory. Needless to say, the pacer hasn’t looked back since then.

5. Mayank Agarwal

5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series | Looking back at the best debut performances in Border-Gavaskar Test matches
5 Best Debut Performances in Border-Gavaskar Series: Agarwal has started well in Tests.

It requires nerves of steel for any newbie to play his first international Test match in front of a hostile Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd on Boxing Day.

However, Mayank Agarwal took his first steps in the longest format of the game for India in such circumstances and excelled at the challenge. With the series in line, India completely changed the opening pair and Agarwal partnered Hanuma Vihari at the crease in front of the Aussie pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Known to be an attacking strokeplayer, Agarwal weathered the storm patiently and steered his way to a commendable, gritty knock of 76 runs in 161 deliveries in his first Test innings. He followed that up with 42 runs in the second innings and then bettered the record by notching 77 runs in 112 deliveries in the first innings in Sydney. Agarwal was absolutely instrumental in the team registering a victory and a draw in these two matches.

He held on to his wicket through a solid start and later opened the arms and didn’t deter from bagging boundaries as per the delivery. The player from Karnataka has been honed through the rigours of domestic cricket and all that bore fruition as he lifted the Border-Gavaskar trophy along with the team in the Australian land.

AUS vs IND 2nd Test Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report

AUS vs IND 2nd Test Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | AUS vs IND 2nd Test Dream11 Prediction Today | Australia vs India Boxing Day Test Key Players | MCG Pitch Report

Quite the backstory, isn’t it? After an Adelaide Test that shaped up to be similar to the one in 2018/19, it all unravelled on one of the most incredible and unbelievable third day’s play in recent history.

Australia, led by the brilliant Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, produced an exhibition of pace and seam bowling that once again ignited the conversation of where this attack sits among Australia’s best in history. Two of Australia’s linchpins in Test cricket since the disappointing 2018/19 series bowled with venom and discipline in equal measure in a perfectly-executed attack on the outside edge of India’s batsmen.

However, not all was smooth sailing for the Aussies in Adelaide. And captain Tim Paine pointed it out. Their batting performance of 191, which was only possible thanks to Paine’s effort and India’s horrendous fielding, is cause for significant improvement. That will be high on the agenda at a ground where Australia historically score well.

Even then, bouncing back to level the series looks an incredibly difficult task for India. Virat Kohli, who played beautifully in the first innings in Adelaide, is now on paternity leave. Mohammed Shami, who makes up a crucial part of India’s attack, joins their other important cog, Ishant Sharma, on the sidelines via injury. Question marks remain about the opening combination, whether the bowling attack can deliver with two key players out and, of course, whether the batsmen can bounce back after such an abomination.

These questions and more will be answered on Boxing Day. Of course, as Adelaide showed, a good start alone isn’t enough to win a Test. But, one feels that if India start poorly in this one, the task will only be made tougher. For starters, their fielding, which was awful at Adelaide, must improve.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Australia:

  • It was a quiet Test for Steve Smith at Adelaide (1 and 1*). Now, the great batsman returns to the MCG – a ground where he has enjoyed incredible success at: 7 matches, 908 runs, avg. 113.5.
  • Marnus Labuschagne, who looked scratchy at Adelaide, will be key for Australia. He scored 63 against New Zealand at the MCG last season, and still averages above 60 in 15 Tests (60.48).
  • Can Tim Paine influence this game, as he did in Adelaide? The skipper is coming off a man of the match display (73 and 7 catches), and scored 79 on this ground vs New Zealand last year.
  • Pat Cummins enjoys bowling at the MCG. The world number one Test bowler has 18 wickets in three Tests on this ground at an average of 16.17. He took 6/27 vs India in 2018/19, one of the finest spells in Border-Gavaskar matches at the MCG. Also, Cummins is coming off seven wickets in the Adelaide Test (3/48 and 4/21).
  • Josh Hazlewood, who has broken into the top five Test bowlers in the world, took a remarkable 5/8 in Adelaide. Interestingly, however, Hazlewood hasn’t had the best of times at the MCG with 13 wickets in five Tests at an average of 38.15. Mitchell Starc has a similar record, with nine wickets in three Tests at an average of 38.67. Can they deliver here?
  • Nathan Lyon has taken 31 wickets in nine Tests at the MCG (avg. 34.35).

India:

  • If India are to bounce back, so much rests on Cheteshwar Pujara to perform. The patient right-hander had a tour to remember in 2018/19 (521, avg. 74.42, 3 centuries), which included 106 (319) in the Boxing Day Test in that series.
  • Mayank Agarwal will also be key for India. The opener played well at the MCG two years ago, scoring 76 (161) and 42 (102).
  • Ajinkya Rahane has enjoyed success at the MCG. The stand-in India skipper scored 147 on this ground in 2014/15.
  • Can Jasprit Bumrah produce the goods? India’s star seamer must lead the way. He has enjoyed success at the MCG, with arguably the greatest spell in Border-Gavaskar MCG Tests (6/33, in 2018/19).
  • R Ashwin will also be key for India. He is coming off a fine display at Adelaide, where he took 4/55 and 1/16.

AUS vs IND 2nd Test Preview Dream11: Can Pujara deliver the goods for India?

Stats and Facts

  • Australia lead India 8-3 in MCG Boxing Day Tests. India won the last meeting between the sides at the MCG in 2018/19 by 137 runs.
  • Steve Smith scored 192 in his only Test vs India at the MCG, back in 2014/15.
  • There is pressure on Travis Head to perform, given that Warner will be due back soon. He returns to a ground where he scored a century (114) vs New Zealand last season.
  • Ravindra Jadeja performed well at the MCG in 2018/19. He took 2/45 and 3/82 at an economy rate of just 2.23.

Possible Playing 11

David Warner and Will Pucovksi were ruled out of this Test. So, Australia should stick with the same XI, with eyes again on Joe Burns who scored a second-innings fifty at Adelaide.

Australia: 1. Joe Burns, 2. Matthew Wade, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Mitchell Starc, 9. Pat Cummins, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood

India have named their XI for the Test, but in no specific order. Prithvi Shaw has been dropped. As has Wriddhiman Saha, with Rishabh Pant selected. Shubman Gill will make his debut, as will Mohammad Siraj. Ravindra Jadeja is also in.

So, the decision will be whether to open with Vihari or Gill.

India: 1. Mayank Agarwal, 2. Hanuma Vihari, 3. Cheteshwar Pujara, 4. Shubman Gill, 5. Ajinkya Rahane (c), 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. R Ashwin, 9. Umesh Yadav, 10. Jasprit Bumrah, 11. Mohammad Siraj

MCG Pitch Report and Weather

Last year, the MCG groundstaff made a conscious decision to leave grass on the surface after years of flat, slow tracks for Boxing Day Test matches. Ahead of this Test, pictures have shown that there is a grass covering on this surface as well, which ensures that the bowlers have something to play with.

However, batting first is a must. The team batting first has crossed 400 in four of the last five Tests at the MCG, with the only exception being Australia’s 327 in the 2017/18 Ashes.

The weather forecast looks good for the majority of the five days, except for the third evening where there is a chance of showers.

One can never write off India. However, their backs are well and truly against the wall, which requires their batting to step up as best they can. Without Kohli, as well as the absence of Shami with the ball, that will be a tough ask. Australia to win.

Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG

Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG | A look at the best bowling performances in the BGT at the MCG Boxing Day

Among all the cricket grounds in the world, the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) holds a very special place in the heart of every cricket lover. After an eventful test match at the Adelaide Oval, we are heading for the Boxing Day Test at the historic MCG between Australia and India.

This venue has witnessed several spectacular individual bowling performances from both the sides; thus many bowlers have registered their names in the honours board. In this article, I am going to mention only five of those magnificent bowling spells by bowlers from both the sides in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Here we go.

5. Anil Kumble (25-4-84-5), 2007

Embed from Getty Images

Anil Kumble’s performance was one of the rare positive things for the Indian team in the Boxing Day Test in 2007, as India failed miserably with the bat and thus lost the game by a huge margin of 337 runs.

Kumble picked his first wicket in the form of Phil Jaques at a time when Australia were marching for a huge first innings total, as they were well placed at 135-0. His second victim was the experienced Michael Hussey, who was adjudged LBW to a googly after scoring just two runs. He came back into the attack when Symonds and Gilchrist were forming a good partnership and dismissed both of them in quick succession. He picked his fifth and final wicket in the form of Brett Lee, who was deceived by a quick, flat delivery on the stumps and thus was declared LBW.

A fifer by a spinner on a first-day MCG pitch takes a lot of effort. Secondly, it was his spell that restricted Australia to 343, when 400 or even 450 seemed gettable.

4. Pat Cummins (11-3-27-6), 2018

Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG | A look at the best bowling performances in the BGT at the MCG Boxing Day
Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG: Pat Cummins was excellent.

I would like to call this spell as a superbly planned and executed one. It was not a typical seam bowling exhibition by Cummins as he persisted with the bodyline tactics and got rewarded.

His first wicket was Hanuma Vihari, who was bounced out for the 2nd time in the Test by him. Then he got rid of both Pujara and Kohli in a similar fashion as both of them flicked straight to the leg gully. The credit must also be given to the skipper Tim Paine for the field placement. Then he went on to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane, who followed Kohli by edging one down the leg side to the keeper. His fifth victim was Mayank Agarwal, who was played on off a delivery that kept low. Then he bounced out Ravindra Jadeja to complete his 6-fer.

Although his efforts went in vain as Australia lost the game by 137 runs, this spell is remembered as one of his special spells in test cricket.

3. Brett Lee (18-2-47-5), 1999

This bowling spell indicated the scorching pace that Brett Lee had, something which we all witnessed throughout his superb International career.

His first wicket was Sadagopan Ramesh, who was played on off a good length delivery. After that, Rahul Dravid edged one to Gilchrist while playing a cut shot, thus became the second victim of Lee. Then, he completed his 5-fer by dismissing MSK Prasad, Ajit Agarkar and Javagal Srinath in a single over. Prasad got beaten by his pace and was bowled off a full toss, whereas Agarkar was adjudged LBW off a toe-crushing Yorker. Srinath was bounced out by him off a very well directed bouncer.

These were mere indications of his extraordinary skills as a fiery fast bowler and this is considered as one of his finest bowling performances in Test cricket.

2. Ben Hilfenhaus (26-5-75-5), 2011

Embed from Getty Images

It was the 1st Test of the 2010/11 series and Australia had posted a decent total of 333 on the board after batting first.

The Indian openers added 22 runs for the first wicket and then Gambhir edged one to Brad haddin and thus Hilfenhaus got his first wicket. The rest of the day went good for the visitors as they finished with 214-3 at the end of day 2. But what happened on the next day was simply magical. Ben Hilfenhaus ran through the Indian middle order with a magnificent spell of seam bowling. First, he bowled a well set Rahul Dravid with a ripper that straightened enough after being pitched and hit the off stump. A similar delivery on the fourth stump line found Kohli’s edge and was grabbed by Haddin behind the stumps comfortably. The captain MS Dhoni edged one straight to the gully, off a delivery that was not there to play the drive. His fifth victim was the night watchman Ishant Sharma, who went for a drive with hard hands and was caught behind.

This spell played a key role in restricting India to 282 and therefore Australia could get a crucial lead of 51 runs.

1. Jasprit Bumrah (15.5-4-33-6)

Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG | A look at the best bowling performances in the BGT at the MCG Boxing Day
Top 5 bowling performances in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at MCG: Bumrah was superb.

I would term it as the finest bowling performance I have ever seen by an Indian bowler in the BGT. It was the 3rd test of the series and both the sides were looking for a victory as the series was well poised at 1-1. Batting first, India had posted a very good score of 443 in the first innings. What followed next was a masterclass from Jasprit Bumrah.

First, he dismissed Marcus Harris with a well directed short delivery. Then he deceived Shaun Marsh with an absolute peach of a slow Yorker and Marsh was found plumb in front of the stumps. His 3rd wicket was Travis Head, who was beaten for pace and was bowled. Then he dismissed Tim Paine, who edged a good length delivery that was angled in but moved slightly away after being pitched. He completed his 5-fer by getting Nathan Lyon LBW with a delivery that clicked 146kph. His final victim was Josh Hazlewood who edeged a full length delivery to the stumps.

This spell had everything. There were seamed up deliveries, bouncers, yorkers and that famous slow yorker to Shaun Marsh.  This was an exhibition of “complete fast bowling” by the world-class seamer and thus is placed in the first position in this list.

So, this is my list of five best bowling performances at the MCG in the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Have your say!

NZ vs PAK 1st Test Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report

NZ vs PAK 1st Test Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | NZ vs PAK 1st Test Dream11 Prediction Today | New Zealand vs Pakistan 1st Test Key Players | Bay Oval Mount Maunganui Pitch Report

After a comprehensive win in the T20I series, New Zealand will be eyeing a spot in the ICC World Test Championship Final when they lock horns with Pakistan in a two-match Test series that starts on 26th Dec, at Bay Oval in beautiful Mount Maunganui.

In their last Test series, the Blackcaps turned out to be too good for West Indies and claimed a back-to-back Innings victories. They also thrashed England by an innings & 65 runs when the two sides played here in 2019. Blackcaps have not lost a Test in 2020 and would like to end the year on a high.

Meanwhile, Pakistan suffered another blow when a groin injury ruled their prolific all-rounder Shadab Khan out of the first test. Their captain Babar Azam and opener Imam-ul-Haq have not recovered from their respective injuries, which makes them unavailable for this Test match. Mohammad Rizwan will lead the side in the first Test match.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

New Zealand:

  • Tim Southee is in the form of his life and four wickets away from becoming the third New Zealander to take 300 Test wickets. He also took 12 wickets in the last series against the Men in Maroon. Conditions at Bay Oval will suit the Black Caps Seamer that makes him a must-have pick for this match.
  • BJ Watling was man of the match on this ground vs England last year. He scored a magnificent 205 off 473 balls. He combined with Mitchell Santner (126) for a mammoth 261-run stand.
  • Kane Williamson piled up a mountain of runs against West Indies in the first Test before taking paternity leave for the second one. He would like to continue his red hot form. Williamson has scored 854 runs in 10 Tests vs Pakistan at an average of 47.44.
  • Ross Taylor has the most runs in New Zealand-Pakistan Tests of any current player (905 runs, avg. 41.13).
  • Kyle Jamieson was the most impressive bowler against the West Indies, and also got the Man of the series for picking 11 wickets at an average of 13.09. He would like to continue his red ball form.
  • Niel Wagner took eight wickets on this ground against England last year.

Pakistan

  • Mohammad Rizwan looked in superb touch in the last T20I, and he also played well in his previous outing against England in this format. Now the trust shown by the team management to choose him as the captain will be a massive boost for his confidence, and the onus will be on him to perform.
  • Azhar Ali came under severe criticism for his batting & captaincy before playing a 141 runs match-saving knock against England earlier this year. Unfortunately for him, that could not save his captaincy. He also looked good in his practice match against New Zealand A and scored a total of 88 runs in the two innings. The former captain will look to prove his worth when he steps in the park again.
  • Mohammad Abbas’ delivery to dismiss Ben Stokes was one of the most talking points when cricket resumed after a halt in 2020. The Pakistani Pace Bowler picked 5 wickets in the practice match against New Zealand A and would look to lead the pace attack with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah in his ranks.

NZ vs PAK 1st Test Preview Dream11: Azhar Ali will be key.

Stats and Facts

  • The last time Pakistan toured New Zealand for Tests, New Zealand won 2-0 in 2016 (8 wickets and 138 runs).
  • Overall, though, Pakistan have a good record in New Zealand. They have won 10 matches compared to New Zealand’s seven, with 14 draws.
  • Interestingly, Tom Latham averages just 31 vs Pakistan.

Possible Playing 11

Kane Williamson will replace Will Young after coming back from his well-deserved Paternity leave.

New Zealand: 1. Tom Latham, 2. Tom Blundell, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Henry Nicholls, 6. BJ Watling (wk), 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Kyle Jamieson, 9. Tim Southee, 10. Niel Wagner, 11. Trent Boult

Haris Sohail and Faheem Ashraf are expected to make a comeback in the Playing 11.

Pakistan: 1. Abid Ali, 2. Shan Masood, 3. Azhar Ali, 4. Fawad Alam, 5. Haris Sohail, 6. Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), 7. Faheem Ashraf, 8. Yasir Shah, 9. Shaheen Afridi, 10. Naseem Shah, 11. Mohammad Abbas.

Bay Oval Mount Maunganui Pitch Report & Weather Conditions

The Bay Oval track was pretty good for batting in the New Zealand vs England Test last year. England scored 353, followed by New Zealand’s mammoth 615/9d. Then, the skillful New Zealand bowlers, led by Wagner, were able to extract some uneven bounce to dismantle England for 197.

This time the Bay Oval pitch is expected to be neutral but according to the current forecast it might rain on the second day. With overcast conditions, the bowlers could have an edge.

Dream11 Prediction

Grand League Picks

  • BJ Watling scored a Double Century when New Zealand played against England at this venue. After making a comeback from a hamstring injury he will look to be back among the runs. In the last couple of years, he has turned out to be one of the most valuable resources for New Zealand in this format and will be a good pick in both small/grand leagues.
  • Fawad Alam performed brilliantly in the domestic circuit to grab a place on the International side but has not done much justice to his talent and opportunities given to him. However, he scored 139 runs in the second innings against New Zealand A and it will be interesting to see if he can grab this and make a place for him in the absence of Babar Azam. He will be a good pick in Grand Leagues.
  • Faheem Ashraf was the most impressive from the Pakistani camp in the recently concluded T20I series and would like to carry forward his white ball form. If he can perform and make an impact in this series, Shadab Khan’s injury will be a blessing in disguise for him.
  • Ross Taylor will be playing his first Test after being dropped from the T20 squad. The Blackcaps veteran will look to make a point for him and score some big runs.

The absence of Babar Azam is a significant one for Pakistan. New Zealand, with such a superb home record over the past decade, look good to win. New Zealand to win this match and end 2020 on a high.

No DRS in BBL: Twitter reactions after another poor decision

No DRS in BBL: Twitter reactions after another poor decision | Twitter reactions to another poor decision in BBL 10, with discussions around DRS

Yet again in BBL 10, a poor decision, and no Decision Review System (DRS) was a key point of discussion. After Usman Khawaja took the cover off a delivery from Andrew Tye, he was given not out. The explanation by umpire Simon Lightbody, that the bat had hit the ground, sent Tye into a frenzy and alarm bells ringing for fans.

The key thing to understand here is that umpires can make mistakes. They are human. However, Cricket Australia, who thought that the DRS is a significant and unnecessary expense, continues to hurt the BBL. With all the new rules and in-game additions, the absence of DRS and presence of awful decisions does not do the competition any favours. In fact, it reduces its value and integrity in the eyes of the fans.

Opinions were rife on Twitter among players and fans regarding the DRS situation. Australia’s great former keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist led the way, suggesting that even a “watered down” DRS with just TV replays would be better than nothing at all. Glenn Maxwell also had a similar view.

Here are some of the Twitter reactions to another instance of a decision making headlines in the BBL.

b

Calls will grow louder for DRS if the poor decisions continue. From a CA perspective, they will be hoping that no poor decision directly impacts a result, or else the reactions will be even more scathing. Next up, Brisbane Heat will do battle with Adelaide Strikers, and the umpires will need to be on their game.

BBL 10 Match 13: HEA vs STR Preview Dream11 Possible 11 Pitch Report | HEA vs STR Dream11 Prediction Today | Heat vs Strikers Key Players | Gabba Brisbane Pitch Report

Will a return to the Gabba inspire Brisbane Heat? A week after a disappointing defeat against Sydney Thunder in a game they looked like winning, the heat is on the Heat to turn their form around after a poor last few seasons.

Former Heat all-rounder Ben Cutting spoke recently of the culture issues at the Heat, and if the defeats continue, those calls will only grow louder. So, the onus is on Chris Lynn to lead the way to provide some semblance of calm for one of the BBL’s most underperforming teams.

They have an opportunity to get a victory today against Adelaide Strikers. The Strikers will be without star batsman Alex Carey due to border closures as a result of an increase in COVID-19 cases in Sydney, which is a blow as the left-hander is coming off a half-century a week ago against the Hurricanes.

Like the Heat, the Strikers have made an indifferent start to their BBL 10 season. Their last performance was a poor one against Sydney Sixers, where they conceded 177/5 after restricting the Sixers to 58/3 in 11.1 overs, and scored just 138/7 after making a start of 52/0 in the first 4.2 overs. Can they bounce back?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Brisbane Heat:

  • Chris Lynn has the most runs in Heat-Strikers matches (191). However, these runs come at an average of just 17.36. Can he deliver today?
  • Jimmy Peirson has the next most among current Heat players with 158 runs (avg. 31.60).
  • Jack Wildermuth has a crucial role to play. He has been in outstanding form, with 31 (11) last week vs Thunder (after his century for Australia A vs Indians), along with three wickets vs Thunder.
  • Mark Steketee has taken six wickets in five games vs Strikers.

Adelaide Strikers:

  • Jake Weatherald has the most runs for Strikers so far in BBL 10 (96, avg. 48.00, SR 141.17).
  • Phil Salt smashed 67* off 38 balls in his last game vs Heat in BBL 09.
  • Rashid Khan has eight wickets in five matches vs the Heat. He takes his wickets at an average of just 14.13 against them at an economy rate of 5.65.
  • When Matt Renshaw was playing for the Heat, he loved playing vs the Strikers (185 runs, one dismissal). Now, he’s playing for the Strikers. Can he perform vs Heat?
  • Daniel Worrall is coming off a superb spell of swing and seam bowling vs Sydney Sixers. He took 2/12 in four overs. He has taken three wickets in three games vs Heat.
  • Peter Siddle has taken six wickets in three matches so far in BBL 10. This includes 5/16 vs Hurricanes. Wes Agar has also taken six wickets, with two wickets in each of his three games so far this season.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 11, Strikers 6, Heat 5.
  • Last season, Heat bowled Strikers out for 110 at the Gabba, and won by seven wickets. Three days later, Strikers rolled the Heat for 100 at Adelaide, and won by 10 wickets.
  • Strikers currently sit fifth in the BBL 10 table with 5 points. Heat sit bottom with 1 point.

Possible Playing 11

Brisbane Heat have named the same 16-man squad that they had for their game against the Thunder last week.

Brisbane Heat: 1. Max Bryant, 2. Sam Heazlett, 3. Chris Lynn (c), 4. Dan Lawrence, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Jack Wildermuth, 7. Jimmy Pierson (wk), 8. Mark Steketee, 9. Matt Kuhnemann, 10. Ben Laughlin, 11. Mujeeb ur Rahman

Adelaide Strikers have also named their squad. Alex Carey and Harry Conway are out of this game due to current border restrictions. The Strikers could look to play Liam O’Connor, who took 1/22 and 3/30 vs Heat last season.

Adelaide Strikers: 1. Jake Weatherald, 2. Phil Salt, 3. Matt Renshaw, 4. Harry Nielsen (wk), 5. Jono Wells, 6. Matt Short, 7. Liam Scott/Liam O’Connor, 8. Rashid Khan, 9. Peter Siddle (c), 10. Wes Agar, 11. Daniel Worrall
