The Stars are arguably the team to beat. However, whether they can maintain their nerve in the biggest games of the season remains to be seen. But, for now, they look like they could conquer all before them, including the Thunder, who have lost two straight games after being on the wrong end of a Tom Banton onslaught two nights ago.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Marcus Stoinis is currently the leading BBL09 run-scorer (281 at 70.25).
  • Stoinis scored 58 vs Thunder a week ago, part of a fine run of form where his last five scores read: 81*, 33, 25, 58, 68*.
  • Usman Khawaja failed against the Stars last week, but still has a good record against them: 250 runs at an average of 50. Alex Hales has had a quiet few games: 11*, 32, 4, 0, 20*. He needs a big outing.
  • Nick Larkin loves playing the Thunder. His scores in three games against them: 28*, 41*, 65.
  • Sydney Thunder need Callum Ferguson to deliver in this game. He has to improve on his record vs Stars: 34 runs in three games.
  • Glenn Maxwell took two wickets vs Sydney Thunder last week. His record vs them with the bat (avg. 16 in seven games) is poor, but he is coming off some time at the crease (40* off 32 balls vs Renegades).
  • Alex Ross scored 40 vs Melbourne Stars one week ago.
  • Daniel Sams is the leading wicket-taker in BBL09 (14). He has taken at least two wickets in every game, except for one where he took a single wicket. He took three wickets vs Stars last week.
  • Haris Rauf will be playing in this game. He has been one of the stars of BBL09 (10 wickets in three games).
  • Chris Morris has eight wickets in five games.
  • Sandeep Lamichhane (3/26) and Adam Zampa (2/19) were superb at the MCG last time out, taking 5/45 between them. Also, Zampa has eight wickets in six games vs Thunder.

  • Tom Curran’s last two games (1/58 and 0/40) have been underwhelming. However, his all-round ability means he is always one to watch in T20s.
  • Ben Dwarshuis had a poor night in the field in Coffs Harbour, conceding 40 and dropping two catches. However, he has 11 wickets in six games vs Strikers.
  • Josh Hazlewood enjoyed a solid return to cricket with 1/18 last game.

Also, with Jono Wells playing so beautifully in the middle order, the top order can play with freedom knowing they have an in-form batsman to come. Phil Salt, Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey have it in them to put the Sixers under significant pressure, of which the likes of Michael Neser and Rashid Khan can finish off.

  • KL Rahul has certainly made a strong case to partner Rohit permanently in T20Is. He scored 62, 11 and 91 in the recent T20I series vs West Indies.
  • Also, KL Rahul scored 89 in the only T20I played at Indore to date – also vs Sri Lanka.
  • Virat Kohli vs Sri Lanka in T20Is: 4 matches, 283 runs, average: 94.33, SR: 136.71.
  • Rishabh Pant looked promising in the recent ODI series vs West Indies, with scores of 71 and 39 in the opening two ODIs.
  • Danushka Gunathilaka has made four double-figure scores in his past five T20Is, but has only passed 20 twice. Needs to build on this.
  • Kusal Perera is the current highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka vs India in T20Is (174 at an average just under 30).
  • Bhanuka Rajapaksa‘s recent scores in the Bangladesh Premier League: 29, 32, 6, 96*, 10.
  • India didn’t pick Yuzvendra Chahal last game, which is odd given he is the leading wicket-taker in India-SL T20Is. He took four wickets on this ground just over two years ago.
  • Jasprit Bumrah returns, take two. He needs two wickets to surpass Ravi Ashwin (52) as India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
  • Interestingly, Lasith Malinga averages 52 with the ball vs India in T20Is. However, he is one to watch as he bowls in the crunch overs.
  • Isuru Udana is six wickets away from 150 in T20s. He has enhanced his reputation as a fine all-round player in the short format.

  • Mitchell Marsh, coming off 48 on Sunday, scored 56* (22) vs Renegades earlier this season.
  • Cameron Bancroft enjoyed a half-century against the Renegades in the same game.

  • Bhanuka Rajapaksa‘s recent scores in the Bangladesh Premier League: 29, 32, 6, 96*, 10. Can he further enhance his reputation?
  • Jasprit Bumrah is back. The world’s premier white-ball bowler needs two wickets to surpass Ravi Ashwin (52) as India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal has the most wickets in India-Sri Lanka T20Is (14). Chahal is neck-and-neck with Bumrah for most wickets. He currently has 52 T20I wickets compared to Bumrah’s 51.
  • Interestingly, Lasith Malinga averages 52 with the ball vs India in T20Is. However, he is one to watch as he bowls in the crunch overs.
  • Isuru Udana is six wickets away from 150 in T20s. He has enhanced his reputation as a fine all-round player in the short format.

  • Daniel Hughes will take over the captaincy as Moises Henriques will miss this game as his wife is due to give birth to their first child.
