CWC 2019 Match 5: Bangladesh v South Africa Preview Dream11

CWC 2019 Match 5: Bangladesh v South Africa Preview Dream11. BAN vs SA Preview Dream11 Prediction

A 10-team World Cup was supposed to reduce one-sided games, right? A tournament of established teams surely means one cracking match after another? After four straight one-sided games, not quite.

There is an argument Afghanistan, pound-for-pound, put up the best fight. South Africa had their moments against England, but their batting concerns came to the fore. Life at the 2019 World Cup began with Imran Tahir giving Usain Bolt a run for his money at The Oval, which was then followed by an honest South African bowling effort. However, the decision to leave out David Miller was a key talking point after the match, with the Proteas struggling to find any impetus in their batting after Quinton de Kock was out. Can they bounce back today ahead of a meeting with India on Wednesday?

Bangladesh, a team that many feel can’t be ignored, begin their campaign today. Mashrafe Mortaza, likely in his last days as an international cricketer, is set to play despite a hamstring strain. If the Bangladeshi players forget his influence, they have received a stark reminder. They have a few other injury concerns, most notably Tamim Iqbal (wrist), but their ability to keep a strong level of performance throughout the match will still be in question here. Can they make a dream start?

Key to a Bangladesh win

Tamim Iqbal is one of various Bangladesh players to have an injury concern. He was reportedly in pain batting in the nets on the eve of the match. So, today is an opportunity for Bangladesh to display some grit and push on against the odds a little, challenging the South Africans on all fronts. One area they will want to nail today is their batting, overcoming South Africa’s threat with the new ball via the in-form Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan and possibly Tamim. Then, Bangladesh’s middle order has enough experience to build on a platform. However, can the Tigers put on a good show for the full 50 overs? This question comes to mind thinking of the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they had plenty of good moments, followed by some poor ones.

Also, Bangladesh will be right in the game if they see the back of Quinton de Kock early. Mustafizur Rahman has enjoyed success against de Kock in the past, and if the Tigers can do so again, it puts significant pressure on skipper Faf du Plessis. South Africa’s two best batsmen have contributed 40% of their runs in ODIs this year, so much depends on how much pressure Bangladesh can build on these two, as well as how they transfer pressure over to the rest of the South African lineup, under pressure after an under-par display against England.

Key to a South Africa win

South Africa still showed enough at The Oval to be considered a Semi Finals contender. Their effort to restrict England to just over a run-a-ball in the end was a positive start to their campaign. A key tactic South Africa could employ today is re-opening the Bangladesh wounds when it comes to short-pitched bowling. It has been the World Cup for the short ball so far, and with Bangladesh struggling against this type of bowling in the past, you certainly wouldn’t put it past Faf du Plessis to employ the kind of tactics West Indies did against Pakistan. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi will be his wicket-taking threats, and so too Imran Tahir as he could come up against Bangladesh batsmen looking for an escape route.

Also, surely David Miller returns for South Africa? Apart from his good record in World Cups, South Africa need an injection of power to overcome a symptom of ‘sameness’ in their batting lineup. Of course, much still rests on Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, but others have to put their hand up as well. Hashim Amla has a superb record vs Bangladesh, but he is in doubt for today’s clash after a blow to the head against England. So, if it’s Aiden Markram at the top, can he deliver the innings we know he can in ODIs? Can Rassie van der Dussen continue his impressive start to his international career? The equation for South Africa is pretty simple: ensure the middle order has a strong platform to play off.

Pitch and conditions

The same pitch used in the England-South Africa game will be used today. So, watch out for cutters and bowling into the pitch – perfect for Mustafizur Rahman in particular. Conditions will be mostly cloudy, so bowlers could get some assistance in the air as well as off a pitch with still some greenish tinge.

Possible Playing 11

It remains to be seen whether Tamim Iqbal plays. If not, then the inconsistent Liton Das will replace him. Mashrafe Mortaza (hamstring), Mustafizur Rahman (back) and Mohammad Saifuddin (calf) all have niggles too. Also, do Bangladesh go with Mosaddek Hossain, who hit a terrific 20-ball 50 recently vs West Indies, or Sabbir Rahman?

Bangladesh: 1. Tamim Iqbal/Liton Das, 2. Soumya Sarkar, 3. Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mohammad Mithun, 6. Mahmudullah, 7. Mosaddek Hossain, 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Mashrafe Mortaza (c), 10. Mustafizur Rahman, 11. Rubel Hossain/Mohammad Saifuddin

If Hashim Amla is not fit for this match, Aiden Markram could be sent to open. That will pave the way for David Miller to return. Also, Dale Steyn is one game away from a return.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Aiden Markram, 3. Faf du Plessis (c), 4. Rassie van der Dussen, 5. David Miller, 6. JP Duminy, 7. Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. Dwaine Pretorius, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Lungi Ngidi, 11. Imran Tahir

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head in World Cups: Matches 3, Bangladesh 1, South Africa 2.
  • The last meeting between these sides in a World Cup saw South Africa bundle Bangladesh out of the group stage with a huge 206-run win in 2011.
  • Quinton de Kock (810) has the most ODI runs for South Africa in the last year. Second is Faf du Plessis. Third is Reeza Hendricks, who isn’t even in South Africa’s World Cup squad.
  • Among nations at this World Cup, Mustafizur Rahman has the best strike rate in ODIs since the last World Cup (min. 20 innings: 27.4).
  • Shakib Al Hasan needs one wicket to become the fastest to the 250 wickets-5000 runs double in ODIs.
  • Imran Tahir is set to play his 100th ODI.

Match Prediction

A close game awaiting us? Perhaps.

South Africa would be hurting after their loss to England. Bangladesh certainly have it in them to cause the Proteas a problem or two. A Tigers win would not be a shock, but South Africa might just have enough to get an important win.

CWC 2019 – Pakistan v West Indies: 5 key talking points

Pakistan v West Indies: 5 key talking points. PAK vs WI 5 key talking points from their 2019 Cricket World Cup match

Cricket nuts in Australia, like myself, had a conundrum. How do we manage our time effectively so we can watch as many full matches as possible, while still getting an acceptable amount of sleep?

So, thank you Pakistan. You made watching a full game possible, even though it was an abomination. If this was a day/night match, the floodlights wouldn’t have even been turned on. There was plenty of talk of this powerful West Indies side scoring 350, 400 and even 500, but Pakistan ensured they didn’t even come close.

West Indies’ dark horse status just gathered some significant momentum. Their batting is considered one of the most dangerous in the tournament, but it was their bowlers bouncing out Pakistan’s batsmen with alarming ease. After all, Andre Russell’s first involvement in the game was a wicket, and finished with 2/4 of three overs, beginning the short ball onslaught.

A game that finishes in 35.2 overs isn’t memorable for the right reasons. But, there are always talking points. Below are five.

Also read: 3 good changes to see after the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

1. The template has been set against Pakistan

The West Indies weren’t the only ones having a good time. All other teams watching on just had their tactics set for them on screen.

It was mentioned various times on commentary that they can’t remember so many short balls in a single ODI before. But, everyone could see why. 68 of the 130 balls the Windies bowled were short-of-a-length, picking up seven wickets along the way.

In any competition, where winning is up for grabs, you prey on the opposition weakness like no tomorrow. Pakistan’s technique against the short ball, for an experienced international side, was nothing short of an embarrassment. Now, England, who conceded 300+ three times out of four games in their recent series vs Pakistan, have the template set for them. Jofra Archer to bowl a few short balls, anyone?

Pakistan v West Indies: 5 key talking points – Pakistan’s fear.

2. Pakistan have another poor start to a tournament

Pakistan fans can hold some hope in the fact that they also had a terrible start in the 2017 Champions Trophy. India thrashed them with ease, even forcing leading media expert Jarrod Kimber to rant on an appalling performance.

Here, they have had another very poor start. Worryingly, this is their 11th straight ODI loss, in addition to their Warm-up defeat to Afghanistan. But, they have showed before they can bounce back and surprise everyone. Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has called for a quick bounce back (and surely play better against bounce, too). However, if Pakistan do bounce back soon, do they have it in them to maintain consistency and discipline across a total of nine round robin matches?

3. West Indies are here to make a mark

Forget making up the numbers. West Indies are here to win.

They have certainly come a long way since the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, where they were quite underwhelming. The pace they possess in their squad can have us watching a few batsmen ducking and weaving for cover. This is before discussing their powerful batting lineup, where youngster Nicholas Pooran played a beautiful little knock that surely means the end of Darren Bravo when Evin Lewis returns.

4. Is the make up of the Windies attack correct?

You wouldn’t think there are any issues with an attack that bundles out the opposition for 105, would you?

However, Michael Holding expressed his concerns before play that West Indies have left out two capable bowlers – Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel. At least one of the two would have been expected to play, which surprised Holding.

The question here is whether the attack that took the field last night will regularly threaten the better lineups. Yes, there will be the short ball factor, but teams will be aware of it. Also, there are a number of teams that play the short ball better than Pakistan. A lot of what happened yesterday was down to simply awful batting by Pakistan, even though we shouldn’t take credit away from West Indies. But, it remains to be seen if this attack, especially with Andre Russell still struggling with a knee issue, has the depth to trouble some of the more in-form teams.

Pakistan v West Indies: 5 key talking points. PAK vs WI 5 key talking points from their 2019 Cricket World Cup match. CWC 2019
Pakistan v West Indies: 5 key talking points – Oshane Thomas is an attacking bowler

5. How do you stop Chris Gayle?

A concern, though, is a back injury to Chris Gayle. But, the ‘Universe Boss’ will sure to be back with a venom. He was dominant once again, continuing his amazing 2019 in ODIs where he currently averages 94.80 in six matches. Also, he went past the great AB de Villiers in terms of most sixes at World Cups. Gayle has now hit 40, three more than de Villiers.

He swatted the Pakistani quicks to all parts, hitting six fours and three sixes en route to 50 off 34 balls. Age is just a number to Gayle, but 50+ scores are a regularity. Bowl in his arc, and he will take you apart.

However, did Pakistan miss a trick? You couldn’t have blamed skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed for muddled thinking, but opening with Mohammad Hafeez would have been a viable move. Gayle often takes a while to get set against off-spin bowling, and this is an area where other teams could look to keep Gayle quiet. And, crucially, this can put pressure on his batting partner, who has to deal in boundaries given Chris Gayle’s lack of running between the wickets.

So, a game were I posed the question “who on earth do you pick?” saw the predictably unpredictable Pakistan play out their shortest ever innings in a World Cup match. Records tumbled, but for the wrong reasons, as Pakistan’s terrible run of 11 ODI losses in a row (their worst run ever) continued.

The West Indies, though, are in a good place. Australia is next for the Windies, and what a game that promises to be. For Pakistan, England is next, and there are no prizes for guessing there will be two short balls above the shoulder every over. Even Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali might look to bowl short, too.

CWC 2019 Match 4: Australia v Afghanistan Preview Dream11

CWC 2019 Match 4: Australia v Afghanistan Preview Dream11. AUS vs AFG Preview Dream11 Prediction

A nation with a great World Cup story meets a nation with a great story. Full stop.

Afghanistan will take the field for their second straight World Cup appearance. Their qualification to the tournament was one for the miracle books, coming back from the wilderness to secure qualification last year in Zimbabwe. But, nothing compares to the cricket miracle achieved by this side over the past decade. A change of captaincy so close to the tournament, frowned upon by some players, has thrown a little spanner in the works. However, there is no doubt this side will give their absolute all in each game they play. Can they give the Aussies a scare or two?

Australia, the most successful team in World Cups, begin a campaign full of optimism. Heading into March 2019, they hadn’t won an ODI series for over two years. However, they have hit form at the right time, winning each of their last eight ODIs, including coming from 2-0 down to beat India in India. Steve Smith and David Warner are officially back, and they will be keen to make a strong start. Will Australia put in a clinical display right away?

Key to an Australia win

Australia’s bowling attack is a key reason why they are considered World Cup contenders by many. The stage is set for the Mitchell Starc, man of the tournament in the last World Cup, and Pat Cummins to set the tone against an inexperienced batting lineup in English conditions. There is no doubt Australia can’t afford to be complacent, with the likes of Mohammad Shahzad, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi all capable of contributing to the Afghanistan cause. Also, this could be a big opportunity for the third seamer (i.e. Coulter-Nile, Behrendhorff or Richardson) to make a mark and set things up for Australia.

Also, eyes will be on David Warner (if fit) and Steve Smith. Warner was outstanding in the recently concluded IPL, topping the run scoring chart with ease. His glute injury is being monitored, with confirmation on game day as to his inclusion. Smith has had an outstanding preparation to this tournament, scoring 89*, 91*, 76 and 116 in his last four knocks. There is little doubt they will come out to hostile receptions at this World Cup, but there is also little doubt of the hunger they possess. If they can lead the way with the bat, Australia have plenty of talent to support them (i.e. Khawaja and Maxwell), overcoming Afghanistan’s spin abilities in English conditions and getting their tournament off to a good start.

CWC 2019 Match 4: David Warner, if fit, will play with Steve Smith again in ODIs.

Key to an Afghanistan win

This would be one of the all-time upsets.

While plenty rests on what trouble the spinners can cause Australia, so much also rests on how well the batsmen can handle Australia’s attack. Concerns came to the fore in their second Warm-up match against England, falling to 94/8, a few days after a fine win against Pakistan. Getting through the first powerplay relatively unscathed is crucial, with Mohammad Shahzad a player that can catch Australia off-guard. With the likes of Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi able to occupy the crease, Afghanistan need to hold their own and keep wickets in hand for the final overs.

Also, can Rashid Khan have a day out in his first ever World Cup match? This phenomenon has taken the world by storm since Afghanistan’s first World Cup appearance, and he will be a key man with the ball. Should Gulbadin Naib go to spin straight away against David Warner, with a focus on seam bringing the ball back into Aaron Finch? To have hope of competing, Afghanistan need to display some tactical nous that helps build some pressure, ideally having the spinners bowl to Australia’s middle order in the middle overs.

Pitch and conditions

The forecast shows partly cloudy conditions with no rain. In the last game at Bristol, just 16 days ago, England chased down 359 against Pakistan with five overs to spare.

Possible Playing 11

David Warner is set to open the innings for Australia if fit. If he is ruled out, Usman Khawaja will open, with Shaun Marsh to play in the middle order. If Warner plays, Khawaja will likely go to three and Marsh to miss out. Also, Australia have four options for the fourth specialist bowler – Coulter-Nile, Behrendhorff, Richardson or Lyon.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Usman Khawaja, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Glenn Maxwell, 6. Marcus Stoinis, 7. Alex Carey (wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Coulter-Nile/Jason Behrendhorff, 11. Adam Zampa

Plenty depends on what sort of resistance Afghanistan’s top order can display. Will they feel Hazratullah Zazai can score quick runs?

Afghanistan: 1. Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2. Noor Ali Zadran/Hazratullah Zazai, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Asghar Afghan, 5. Hashmatullah Shahidi, 6. Najibullah Zadran, 7. Mohammad Nabi, 8. Rashid Khan, 9. Gulbadin Naib (c), 10. Dawlat Zadran, 11. Mujeeb ur Rahman

CWC 2019 – England vs South Africa: 5 key talking points

England vs South Africa: 5 key talking points. CWC 2019 Match 1: ENG vs SA – 5 key talking points

The pre-tournament talk is officially over. Nostalgia reigns for millions of cricket fans around the world, with the 2019 Cricket World Cup getting underway at The Oval.

The atmosphere was terrific. Excitement was rift in the build up, and remains the case (for England at least). What better way to get started than by Imran Tahir giving Usain Bolt a run for his money on his celebratory run? Or England then showing their batting capabilities right down the order? Or that Jofra Archer, who has already shown to be one hell of an addition to England’s pace attack? And man, that catch from Ben Stokes.

The opening game, where England won by a highly-convincing 104 runs, delivered some key talking points.

Also read: My 5 big predictions for World Cup 2019! Which do you think will come true?

1. Jofra Archer… the final piece of the puzzle?

There was something distinctly different about Jofra Archer.

Think of his unique attributes that we have come to see in T20 leagues around the globe. How he ambles up to the crease and releases 140km/h thunderbolts without even looking like he’s trying.

But, the spectators at The Oval and millions of viewers around the world were witnessing a special spell. Archer was determined. He was visibly running in harder and releasing thunderbolts with the venom not many have seen from him before. No one was going to stop him. Hashim Amla was unfortunately victim, having to retire hurt after getting hit on the grille. Seven overs. One maiden. 27 runs. Three wickets. It was a pace and bounce clinic.

The challenge for Archer will be to maintain this intensity and quality consistently for at least another 10 games if England are to go all the way. One thing is for sure, though. England’s bowling capabilities have risen after the rule change by the ECB made Archer eligible to play for England in January 2019. This was what they needed after concerns regarding their bowling especially when they were going the distance in West Indies earlier in 2019.

2. Too much depends on Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis for South Africa

Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis have scored 40% of South Africa’s ODI runs in 2019. Hashim Amla and JP Duminy’s need to find form in the big stage, Aiden Markram’s still-to-be-discovered mojo in ODIs, Rassie van der Dussen’s inexperience (despite his excellent start to his career) and the two all-rounders means South Africa need plenty from their two best batsmen. When Faf du Plessis was out cheaply, South Africa’s hopes took a huge hit. The kind of hit that would not happen if Eoin Morgan was out for England in the same situation.

A lack of batting depth is a concern for the Proteas, and they need a confidence boost against Bangladesh on Sunday.

Also read: 3 good changes to see after the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

3. Should South Africa be picking David Miller?

Sure, David Miller’s form in recent months hasn’t exactly been “wow put everything else to the side and watch this”.

It has been quite the opposite at times, particularly during a disappointing IPL 2019 campaign for Kings XI Punjab.

But, are South Africa right to leave out a power-hitter in what is expected to be a high-scoring World Cup? Miller has scored 324 runs in seven World Cup innings at 64.80, with a strike rate of 139.06. His last innings in a World Cup was an 18-ball 49 in all-time classic Semi Final against New Zealand in 2015. With Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram all in the team, South Africa need an injection of power. There is a bit of ‘sameness’ about their lineup, which needs to be shaken up. David Miller is the kind of player that can rise to the occasion, and he should be in South Africa’s side against Bangladesh.

4. England’s long batting lineup and Ben Stokes comes to the fore

Jonny Bairstow, one of England’s stalwarts in their incredible ODI rise, was out in his first ball of the big dance. South Africa issued a surprise with Imran Tahir and England were sprung.

But, from the moment Joe Root cover drove nerves of many to the fence to move the score from two to six, England were on their way. While there would be the feeling that one of Roy, Root or Morgan (each out in the 50s) should have gone on with the job, England’s batting depth came to the fore.

Ben Stokes, in a brilliant all-round performance, held things together brilliantly for England as South Africa realised that taking the pace off the ball and bowling into the pitch was the way to go. 53 of his 89 came in ones and twos, knowing that a score of 300 is defendable on a pitch that is not quite the belter that the England ODI team, fans and opponents have come across over the past four years. And of course, he could continue to do no wrong, taking one of the best catches you will EVER see along with two wickets and a run out. It was a fine day out for him and the England batting lineup, even when Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler missed out.

5. Don’t count South Africa out just yet

The first of nine games is done for South Africa. There is a long way to go, but they showed enough to suggest they can give other sides trouble in this World Cup.

With the tactical nous of skipper Faf du Plessis (i.e. bowling Imran Tahir first up), electric fielding and catching, and a pace attack soon to be bolstered by the return of Dale Steyn, the Proteas have enough quality to cause problems with the ball.

England vs South Africa: 5 key talking points. Cricket World Cup 2019 CWC 2019. ENG vs SA Match Review
Photo by Andy Kearns/Getty Images. England vs South Africa: 5 key talking points – The use of Imran Tahir was brilliant thinking by South Africa.

However, their concern is batting. While they can be encouraged by the efforts of Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, they need a more collective effort if they are to win the games they need to reach the Semi Finals.

England are off the mark. South Africa are like that nervous batsman sitting on zero, desperate to get off the mark by any means possible. With India their third game next Wednesday, their game against Bangladesh on Sunday is crucial.

CWC 2019 Match 3: New Zealand v Sri Lanka Preview Dream11

CWC 2019 Match 3: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Preview Dream11. NZ vs SL Preview Dream11 Prediction

The first two matches of the tournament, on paper, gave a competitive feel, even though Pakistan put on a horror show. The third, between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, doesn’t quite give that feel pre-game.

New Zealand are one of the strong contenders for a Semi Final spot. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have had a torrid run in ODIs since the beginning of 2017. The Black Caps swept Sri Lanka 3-0 at home back at the turn of the year. Sri Lanka have won just 12 of 53 completed ODIs in the last two-and-a-half years. Yet again, a new captain is at the helm. Dimuth Karunaratne has been brought in skipper leading a side that looks terribly underdone.

However, let’s not make a mistake here. Games are not played on paper, and World Cups can spring a surprise or two. New Zealand are favourites, but will Kane Williamson’s men hit the ground running with a strong performance that’s expected of them? In what is expected to be a competitive tournament, nothing can be taken for granted.

Also read: Will Sri Lanka finish bottom of the points table? 5 big predictions for World Cup 2019

Key to a New Zealand win

It is a sight to behold when the Black Caps, particularly Trent Boult, get the ball moving. They hurt India in the Warm-up match last Saturday, and have it in them to cause issues to an inconsistent Sri Lankan top order. With Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne likely to open for the Lankans, New Zealand have the chance to build pressure. However, who should partner Boult up front? Matt Henry was awfully expensive in the second Warm-up against West Indies, paving the way for Tim Southee to get a call up. Powerplay wickets can bring back self doubt among the Sri Lankans, in which the Black Caps can then build on with the pace of Lockie Ferguson and accurate spin of Mitchell Santner. Can Kane Williamson’s team get the better of Sri Lanka’s big guns?

Also, for New Zealand to go far in this tournament, Martin Guptill needs to finish as one of the premier openers of 2019 World Cup. His power-hitting ability at the top can put pressure on the opposition, as well as reduce the pressure on Henry Nicholls, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor; all of whom are predominantly strokemakers. With the likes of Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme capable of wielding the willow, New Zealand would want at least two or three of the top four, like England did against South Africa, to make strong contributions.

CWC 2019 Match 3: NZ vs SL Preview Dream11: Much is expected of skipper Kane Williamson

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Much of Sri Lanka’s struggle over the last few years has come down to reliance on individual brilliance. They have rarely played as a team, which was on display in their tour of New Zealand earlier this year. Where the top order struggled, Thisara Perera nearly got them home on his own. The opposite applied if the top order went well. Here, the Sri Lankans need to overcome the early onslaught from the New Zealand quicks. Then, unlike in the Warm-up game against Australia, the middle order needs to push on effectively. Can Sri Lanka get to the death overs with wickets in hand, set up by the likes of Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews?

Also read: 3 good changes to see after the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Also, what wicket-taking threat can Sri Lanka provide? Lasith Malinga is the main man in the powerplay and death overs, but who else can deliver? The last thing Sri Lanka need is to have two or three bowlers letting the side down, so all called to the crease have to execute the plans effectively. Suranga Lakmal can be dangerous with any early movement. So too Nuwan Pradeep. Then, importantly, the spinners need to chip in with cheap overs and wickets in the middle overs.

Pitch and conditions

Mostly sunny conditions are expected in Cardiff for the match. Cardiff has played host to some of the lower-scoring matches in the last couple of years, especially involving England. Pakistan knocked England out of the 2017 Champions Trophy on a slow pitch. There was some help for the bowlers early on in the Warm-up game between India and Bangladesh, before improving for batting. Similar could be expected in this game.

Possible Playing 11

Colin Munro continues to underwhelm for New Zealand in ODIs. Henry Nicholls was sent up to open against India and Bangladesh earlier this year, and should do so here. Tim Southee could get the nod over Matt Henry, who went the journey in New Zealand’s second Warm-up vs West Indies. Also, Tom Latham is just back in full training, so it remains to be seen whether he gets the nod after a finger injury. If not, last-start centurion Tom Blundell will play.

New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Henry Nicholls, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Tom Latham/Tom Blundell (wk), 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Colin de Grandhomme/Ish Sodhi, 8. Mitchell Santner, 9. Tim Southee, 10. Lockie Ferguson, 11. Trent Boult

Lahiru Thirimanne was Sri Lanka’s top run scorer in their Warm-up match against Australia. So, he should get the nod over Avishka Fernando to partner Dimuth Karunaratne at the top.

Sri Lanka: 1. Dimuth Karunaratne (c), 2. Lahiru Thrimmane, 3. Kusal Mendis, 4. Kusal Perera (wk), 5. Angelo Mathews, 6. Dhananjaya de Silva, 7. Thisara Perera, 8. Suranga Lakmal, 9. Nuwan Pradeep 10. Jefferey Vandersay, 11. Lasith Malinga

  • New Zealand and Sri Lanka played the World Cup opener in 2015. New Zealand won by 98 runs.
  • Sri Lanka have won just 12 of 53 completed ODIs since the beginning of 2017.
  • New Zealand were bundled out of the 2017 Champions Trophy at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Match Prediction

It would certainly be an upset if Sri Lanka beat New Zealand.

Under Kane Williamson’s leadership, expect New Zealand to be switched on. They look to have too much in their locker for struggling Sri Lanka to handle. New Zealand to win.

CWC 2019 Match 2: Pakistan vs West Indies Preview Dream11. PAK vs WI Preview Dream11 Prediction

The second match of the 2019 World Cup is in line with the tournament theme. Unpredictable.

Pakistan and West Indies, two Semi Final challengers, face off in what promises to be a cracking match in Nottingham.

Let’s begin with Pakistan. Unpredictable Pakistan. Their ODI form since the beginning of 2018 has been mighty underwhelming, but this is a side that can never be written off. The Warm-up game against Afghanistan was disappointing, but still, they can’t be written off. Their 2017 Champions Trophy campaign in England is testament to this. However, consistency, stamina and discipline will be put to the test across nine games, so it’s important Pakistan get off to a good start. Can they get a first up win?

On the other hand, there is plenty to like about West Indies’ form in 2019. They pushed England all the way, at times making a mockery of the world’s number one side. A number of their players lit up IPL 2019, and now they are coming off scoring 421 against a very capable New Zealand attack. West Indies are the dark horses of many, and they have a great opportunity to make a mark straight away in the tournament proper.

Can’t wait for this.

Key to a Pakistan win

When you’ve conceded 350+ in each of your past four ODIs, seeing West Indies make 421 can be a worrying sight. Significant onus rests on Pakistan’s bowlers (and fielders – remember the England series?) to limit the damage caused by the Windies batsmen. A good start is key, setting a platform for Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim to build some pressure in the middle overs. Given Pakistan bowled quite well at the death in their last ODI against England (despite the 350+ score), can they ensure they are well in the game by the time the death overs arrive? How well will they field? Can the likes of Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz and Hasan Ali discover their best form?

Also, while a potentially tough day awaits the bowlers, a potentially good one awaits the batsmen. West Indies have also conceded some big scores in recent times, including going the journey against Bangladesh and Ireland. Finding penetration in what is expected to be friendly batting conditions will be a challenge, so Pakistan’s top order needs to hit the ground running so the middle order isn’t under pressure too soon. Eyes will be on Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman and of course, Babar Azam. Then, importantly, can the middle order perform?

Key to a West Indies win

Shai Hope has backed West Indies in the race to 500. It is long odds of happening this game, despite the Windies piling on the runs against a New Zealand side that made life difficult for India’s batsmen last Saturday. The power-packed West Indies batting lineup is not only key in this match, but also their tournament prospects. Can Chris Gayle get off to a flyer, bringing a sense of deja vu to Pakistan after their England series? What about Shai Hope, whose form continues to rocket skywards? If a platform is set for the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell and Jason Holder, watch out.

However, can the Windies bowlers put on a good display? Pakistan’s batsmen have shown they can score big themselves in recent times, so Jason Holder’s men will be after an improvement on what they showed in Ireland recently. They struggled for wickets at times on good batting tracks, and given that similar tracks will await, finding movement and success in the powerplay overs is key. They were able to do it in the Warm-up against New Zealand, but can they continue the job? Will Sheldon Cottrell be the man early on? Or Kemar Roach and Oshane Thomas? The Windies have the pace to trouble teams, so their use of length can be crucial to victory. Also, what impact can their spinner have? These are crucial questions in a crucial game.

Possible Playing 11

Asif Ali was left out of Pakistan’s preliminary World Cup squad. However, he showed his importance in the ODI series against England. Shoaib Malik, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Hasnain have been left out of the 12-man squad for this match.

Pakistan: 1. Imam-ul-Haq, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Mohammad Hafeez/Haris Sohail, 5. Sarfaraz Ahmed (c & wk), 6. Asif Ali, 7. Imad Wasim, 8. Shadab Khan, 9. Hasan Ali, 10. Mohammad Amir, 11. Wahab Riaz

West Indies showed plenty of power against New Zealand. We can be sure they will go with a similar approach here. However, Darren Bravo’s form has been poor, so Nicholas Pooran could get a look in.

West Indies: 1. Chris Gayle, 2. Evin Lewis, 3. Shai Hope (wk), 4. Darren Bravo/Nicholas Pooran, 5. Shimron Hetmyer, 6. Andre Russell, 7. Jason Holder (c), 8. Fabian Allen/Ashley Nurse, 9. Kemar Roach, 10. Sheldon Cottrell, 11. Oshane Thomas/Shannon Gabriel

The forecast for Trent Bridge looks to be cloudy with minimal to no rain expected. In regards to the pitch, this is the ground England smashed 481/6 vs Australia last year. Just 12 days before this match, Pakistan scored 340 vs England before being run down with three wickets and balls to spare.

  • Pakistan have won just three of 24 completed ODIs vs top eight teams since the start of 2018.
  • But, Pakistan are the reigning ICC Champions Trophy holders, held where the World Cup is being played.
  • West Indies and Pakistan also played each other in their first game in the 1999 and 2007 World Cups. Pakistan won in 1999. West Indies did in 2007.

Match Prediction

Who on earth do you pick in this match?

Two sides who can be brilliant on their day, but poor on another. World Cups are a different ball game, but Pakistan turning on a switch to get back into form doesn’t seem so easy. West Indies have been in the better form of late, which is why I will pick them to get a first up win.

Promises to be a cracking match.

3 good changes to see in ODI Cricket after the 2019 World Cup

Yes, it is weird to have an article about what should happen after a fast approaching World Cup. Indeed, it promises to be a very competitive tournament, with many fans, myself included, doing their best to predict who will make the Semi Finals.

However, there are elements of ODI Cricket that would be nice to see adjusted for the betterment of the game. Below are three key changes after the 2019 Cricket World Cup that would be good to see.

Also read: My 5 big predictions for World Cup 2019! Which do you think will come true?

1. Go back to one ball

There should be louder calls to get rid of the extra ball and play with one. This is especially considering how high scoring the World Cup is expected to be. The use of two balls has just about eliminated the art of reverse swing from ODI Cricket, which has helped swing the game well and truly in the batsman’s favour.

Think back to Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Or Zaheer Khan. Or Brett Lee. The art of reverse swing is so memorable and makes for a great battle between bat and ball. The death overs period in particular has been weighted significantly in favour of batsmen, given that the ball stops moving after a few overs. Bringing reverse swing back forces batsmen to be more skillful and does not expose fans to robotic-like play, where balls that don’t go for a boundary are the memorable ones. Also, the ball goes softer, which makes six hitting more of a skill than a foregone conclusion.

A concern here is that the ball could be hard to see as the final overs approach. So, bring back the rule where a used, but more visible, ball was brought in after 34 overs.

Changing from just four fielders outside the circle in the last 10 overs back to five was a key change after the 2015 World Cup. It may be wishful thinking, but here’s hoping that one new ball is used soon after the 2019 edition.

3 good changes to see in ODI Cricket after the 2019 World Cup. 2019 Cricket World Cup. 2019 CWC.

2. Have every ball reviewed by the third umpire

How often do deliveries get sent upstairs when a wicket is taken? Given that many actually turn out to be no balls, one wonders just how many non wicket taking balls are actually no balls. It is a good idea for third umpires to review each delivery to ensure the front line has not been overstepped.

The review each ball does not have to be visible to the public unless a wicket is taken. If a no ball occurs, the third umpire can notify the on-field umpire and it can then be called. The third umpire stepping in has two key benefits:

  • The on-field umpire can focus on what happens after the ball is delivered instead of having to look down then up very quickly.
  • Potential free-hits are missed out on if the on-field umpire misses a no-ball on a non wicket-taking delivery.
3 good changes to see in ODI Cricket after the 2019 World Cup. 2019 Cricket World Cup. 2019 CWC.
Will there be better management of no balls after the 2019 World Cup?

3. More opportunities for Associate nations

Associate nations are already fighting at the bit for greater opportunities. A 10-team World Cup does little to help grow the game long term. Instead, it keeps fantastic cricketers away from the spotlight they deserve.

The ICC had two choices: 1. Cut down World Cup participants or 2. Help ensure Associate nations get more opportunities against higher ranked Full Member nations in between World Cups. Unfortunately, the first proved true, with heartbreak a common theme at the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe last year.

Associate nations need more opportunities in the four-year window between World Cups. Otherwise, how will they continue to grow? It is unfair to expect them to rock up to a World Cup and be competitive with little exposure. The ODI League might make it a little difficult, but here’s hoping that Associate nations such as Scotland get the opportunities they deserve after this tournament, so that the long-term, global aspirations of this great game are in good shape. A move away from a 10-team World Cup would be ideal, but with this format already locked in for 2023, it seems wishful thinking.

CWC 2019 Match 1: England vs South Africa Preview Dream11. ENG vs SA Preview Dream11 Prediction

The build up has been big. Opinions rife. Talk plenty. Many have tried to piece together a possible top four in what promises to be a hugely competitive World Cup. Myself included. But now, it’s time for action, and there is no doubt if the weather holds, we’ll be in for an absolute beauty first up.

England, who have been falling like flies at different times in the past week, enter the tournament as favourites. Project 2019, four years in length, now reaches the “final assessment” stage, with Eoin Morgan’s men looking to become the first England side ever to bring the World Cup home. A potential blockbuster will be sure to keep England on their toes, with a first up win important to find momentum early in a big campaign. How will they handle such a big occasion?

South Africa are perhaps too experienced to be considered a ‘dark horse’ in this year’s World Cup. However, they aren’t expected to lift the trophy, unlike previous editions where better was expected of them. This could work to the Proteas’ benefit, who have shown some fine form in the Warm-up matches. Hashim Amla in particular created excitement among fans, and his contribution in this first game will be crucial, along with South Africa’s potent bowling attack that makes it almost impossible to not consider them for a top four spot. Can Faf du Plessis’ men make a big statement first up by knocking off the tournament favourites?

Key to an England win

The battle between England’s batting and South Africa’s bowling is a mouthwatering prospect. England have taken apart many attacks in their rise to the top over the past four years, but the challenge now is to transfer that form onto the big stage against a good attack. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow continued their fine form in the huge Warm-up win over Afghanistan, and these two will be key in getting the better of South Africa’s seamers early. A key trend in 2019 is that when England have had a strong powerplay, they often go on to score a big total, such is the strength of their middle order which includes Jos Buttler. However, when they have had shaky starts, they haven’t scored big. Can they get it right in the opening game?

Also, the concern with England is whether their bowling attack can deliver glory. A good test presents them first up, with South Africa possessing a batting lineup that can hurt any side on its day. The inclusion of Jofra Archer certainly strengthens England, and a strong start is what Eoin Morgan will be after. Specifically, Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis will be the key wickets, and if England can get the better of South Africa’s top order, it sets the game up. Eyes will be on the likes of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes to help Jofra Archer in leading the attack, giving Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes a platform to work off.

Key to a South Africa win

Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis have scored 40% of South Africa’s ODI runs in 2019. There is no questioning the importance of these two, and both will be vital in helping set up a strong total. However, South Africa need a cohesive batting effort. Hashim Amla has looked in good touch and will be crucial in taming England at the top. Rassie van der Dussen, still young in international cricket, needs the support of his experienced colleagues. In addition to the top order needing to step up, the same applies in the middle, with David Miller a player that simply has to step up for South Africa along with JP Duminy. Can the Proteas ensure he and the all-rounders are tasked with finishing the innings off well?

Also, how will South Africa’s attack fare against the strongest batting lineup? With Dale Steyn ruled out of this clash, much rests on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. They will undoubtedly be key, followed by the ever-energetic Imran Tahir who will be tasked with keeping England quiet in the middle overs. Also, can the likes of Andile Phehlukwayo provide effective support that has South Africa bowling as a well-rounded unit? Who out of Chris Morris or Dwaine Pretorius will get the nod? Can they keep the brilliant Jos Buttler quiet, along with various others in the England side?

Possible Playing 11

England have had some injury concerns in the past week, but none have been too serious. Mark Wood and Eoin Morgan were the two biggest concerns, but both have been cleared of serious injury. Mark Wood has been deemed fit for the tournament opener, but Liam Plunkett has been in some wicket-taking form.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Jonny Bairstow, 3. Joe Root, 4. Eoin Morgan (c), 5. Jos Buttler (wk), 6. Ben Stokes, 7. Moeen Ali, 8. Chris Woakes, 9. Jofra Archer, 10. Adil Rashid, 11. Mark Wood/Liam Plunkett

For South Africa, Dale Steyn has been ruled out. So, should it be Chris Morris or Dwaine Pretorius to take his place? Also, David Miller has officially missed out on the team.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Hashim Amla, 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Faf du Plessis (c), 5. JP Duminy, 6. Aiden Markram, 7. Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. Chris Morris/Dwaine Pretorius, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Lungi Ngidi, 11. Imran Tahir

Pitch and conditions

The forecast for Thursday in London is mostly cloudy, which could possibly aid swing in the early overs. Thankfully (and hopefully), showers should be limited. In relation to the pitch, expect a good batting track to be prepared – the kind that have allowed England’s batsmen to play with great freedom over the last few years.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head in World Cups: Matches 6, England 4, South Africa 2.
  • South Africa’s last ODI assignment in England was a 2-1 defeat in 2017. However, the Proteas won the third game of that series, bowling England out for 153 at Lord’s.
  • England have scored four of the five 400+ totals since the 2015 World Cup.

Match Prediction

What a quality match to kick off the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Both sides will be out to put in a big performance. South Africa have it in them to cause England problems, but I think England will start their tournament off with a win on the back of a good batting effort.

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions. 5 big predictions for Cricket World Cup 2019

It’s official. We are less than a week out from the biggest event on the cricket calendar – the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The 2019 edition does leave a little bit of a bad taste given that only 10 teams are competing for a “World” trophy. The need for global growth and competition is important in cricket, and this decision by the ICC doesn’t support that.

It was heartbreaking for the likes of Zimbabwe to miss out on the World Cup.

Nonetheless, despite the long-term impact of a 10-team tournament, it promises to be a very competitive one. Each team plays each other once, with the top four progressing through to the Semi Finals. The positive is that unlike previous tournaments, every game will count for plenty, which will make for intriguing viewing.

What will also be intriguing to see is the kind of scores made in this tournament. England very recently became the first team in ODI history to make four consecutive 340+ scores en route to a 4-0 series win over Pakistan. Conditions in England ODIs have heavily favoured batsmen in the last few years, so will it be the best batting or bowling lineups that shine most and last? Will we see big scores earlier in the tournament, and then less so as pitches perhaps begin to slow down a little and the pressure rises? Can England, tournament favourites, finally crack the World Cup code, lifting the trophy for the first time? Or can Australia successfully defend their crown?

Plenty is at stake and anything can happen. In this article, I will make five big predictions for the tournament:

  1. Leading run-scorer
  2. Leading wicket-taker
  3. Bottom placed team
  4. Final four
  5. Winner

Leave a comment as to whether you agree or disagree with any (or all) of the predictions!

CWC 2019 Prediction 1: Leading run-scorer

Jonny Bairstow (England)

Expect to see plenty of big scores in this tournament. This is especially the case as two balls and flat pitches will be on show, with the ball to come onto the bat nicely particularly in the first half of the tournament (provided the weather holds)!

So, despite some magnificent players batting at three and lower such as Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Joe Root, Steve Smith, Faf du Plessis and Kane Williamson, I think an opener will get the most runs. Jonny Bairstow and David Warner were in outstanding form for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded IPL, and I think one of these two or Virat Kohli (if not an opener) will get it. With England at home, and this man very familiar with conditions, I think Jonny Bairstow will be the tournament’s leading run-scorer. Keep an eye out also for the likes of Rohit Sharma, Jason Roy, Chris Gayle, Imam-ul-Haq and Quinton de Kock.

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions Who will win the 2019 Cricket World Cup?
AFP. 5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions – Jonny Bairstow has been superb for England.

CWC 2019 Prediction 2: Leading wicket-taker

Jasprit Bumrah (India)

There is plenty of talk of the big scores that will be on show in this World Cup. However, there are a number of world class bowlers on show too, and they will be crucial to their team’s chances.

Think Jasprit Bumrah and the two wristspinners for India. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins for Australia. Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi for South Africa. Jofra Archer, England’s new hope. Trent Boult and Tim Southee for New Zealand. There are other bowlers that hold significant hope for their nations – such as Rashid Khan for Afghanistan, Mustafizur Rahman for Bangladesh, Lasith Malinga for Sri Lanka, Hasan Ali for Pakistan and Jason Holder for West Indies.

So, who will it be?

I think spin will play a key role, but a seamer will get the most wickets. Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah and Kagiso Rabada are my front-runners, given that they are particularly outstanding in the death overs. Starc and Rabada are outstanding in this format, but Jasprit Bumrah is just something else at the moment. His prowess at all stages of the innings will hold both he and India in good stead.

CWC 2019 Prediction 3: Bottom-placed team

Sri Lanka

This a tough prediction to make as it promises to be a very competitive tournament.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are three teams that are most likely to be fighting it out to avoid bottom place. Each side possesses talent, but the fact that all teams play nine games means consistency is of the essence and these sides might struggle to make a sustained run to the Semi Finals.

However, Sri Lanka is my pick for bottom place. Afghanistan’s batting will be a worry throughout the tournament, especially with their lack of experience in English conditions. Another concern is that they have changed their captain so close to the tournament. However, their bowling attack, which includes Rashid Khan, can worry teams. Bangladesh have enough experience to pick up enough positive results on the way, following on from their successful Ireland Tri-Series campaign.

So, can Sri Lanka surprise? Or will it more of what’s been a tough few years? They have won just 12 of their last 52 completed ODIs, struggling to put together complete performances. With a new captain (Dimuth Karunaratne) again at the helm, who himself recently played his first ODI since 2015, Sri Lanka are in a stage of uncertainty. The lack of consistent game-breakers means they will have a tough tournament. Can they prove many doubters wrong?

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions Who will win the 2019 Cricket World Cup?
5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions – Sri Lanka have had a tough few years in ODIs.

CWC 2019 Prediction 4: The Final Four

One that has had me scratching my head for the entirety of 2019 so far. In a tournament like this, where finals spots are limited, who will go through? Consistency of performance will be crucial as each team plays nine games, so while there is room for error unlike the 2007 World Cup, teams will still have to be very much on their game right the way through.

Below are my Semi-Finalists for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, in no particular order:

England: The best ODI side in the world, strengthened by the inclusion of Jofra Archer. England have had a superb four years in ODI Cricket since their awful 2015 campaign, springing them into World Cup favouritism. Their batting lineup is outstanding, and they will be a team who will score quite a few big totals en route to victories. You would be very brave to leave out a side that has Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and co.

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions Who will win the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

India: You would also be very brave to leave out India. Virat Kohli’s men have enjoyed success in different formats away from home in the past few years, and they have the resources and quality to do so again. Their top three of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can set the tone for the likes of MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya to fire, with their bowling attack one of the finest on show in this tournament. Any team with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will be hard to beat.

Australia: The Aussies have burst into contention after a very lean couple of years in ODIs. 2018 was known mainly for the Cape Town fiasco, but Australia also had the worst win-loss ratio of any ODI side, which included a 5-0 loss in their visit to England. However, the team is flying with confidence now after eight straight wins, and welcome back David Warner and Steve Smith. Australia will make the top four as they possess a fine attack to go with a well-balanced batting side.

5 Cricket World Cup 2019 Predictions Who will win the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

South Africa: The fourth and final pick is the most difficult. Of course, this is assuming the other three sides mentioned make the Semi Finals, which as you know, might not happen as cricket is a game of surprises.

  • Pakistan is a side that can absolutely not be written off in World Cups. However, the nine-game factor might just be too much for them as they are still fighting for consistency. If it was a shorter group stage, then Pakistan would have to be picked to progress.
  • West Indies are in contention, too, but a similar situation to Pakistan applies. So, it could very well be South Africa and New Zealand battling it out.
  • Bangladesh can never be counted out either. However, they might lack the bowling firepower needed at crucial stages.

My pick is South Africa, just. The concern I have with South Africa is their reliance on Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock with the bat. These two have scored 40% of South Africa’s ODI runs in 2019, and if both don’t fire, do Hashim Amla and South Africa’s middle order have what it takes to stand up? However, their bowling attack is outstanding, and can help them win enough games to qualify.

Areas of slight concern with New Zealand is their spin attack and consistent power hitting. With Mitchell Santner still finding his best form after injury and Ish Sodhi inconsistent, these two have to perform at high levels consistently. The same applies to the likes of Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham for power. However, they have it in them to perform well along with their top order and seam attack, which will make this battle a brilliant one.

CWC 2019 Prediction 5: Winner

Australia

Head or heart? I’m going with my heart mostly, but also with head.

Australia have assembled a strong squad for the Title defence. It didn’t look too rosy at the beginning of 2019, coming off a terrible year and choosing a new-look team at home against India. However, the Aussies have been terrific in 2019, and have a great mix of talent and experience to go very deep in this tournament. They have hit form in the lead up to the tournament, and are always in the World Cup discussion, having won it five times.

Aaron Finch, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis provide power. The likes of Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja can keep the scoreboard moving. But, crucially, Australia’s bowling attack looks strong and this is why I believe they will go all the way. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will be a challenge for any team, along with the likes of Adam Zampa who has had a fine 2019 so far. Another big factor is the addition of Ricky Ponting in the coaching staff, who has experienced plenty of success in World Cups. His fine tactical brain can be key in helping Australia along the way.

So, England will fall just short. They are the deserved number one side, but in the big games, you can’t rely on winning 350 vs. 350 type games. Your bowling attack needs to be on point in the business end of the tournament, and this could be where England fall just short in the pressure games. For India, there is little doubt in my mind they will have a say, especially given their capability to take wickets in the middle overs. However, can their middle order deliver the goods when needed? They are still unsure of their number four position, and a lot rests on MS Dhoni to have a very good tournament.

To me, Australia have terrific balance, which is why I pick them to win the World Cup.

Australia to go back-to-back?

So, what did you agree or disagree with?

In what promises to be a very competitive tournament, there will always be different opinions and predictions. This makes it all the more exciting.

Scotland vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

Scotland vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI Preview Dream11. SCO vs SL 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction

Scotland vs Sri Lanka take two. Thankfully, the weather forecast in Edinburgh looks a little more promising than Saturday, where the first ODI was washed out.

It is a big day for Scotland. A 10-team World Cup gets underway in just over a week, so there is no doubt that Kyle Coetzer and his team will be keen to remind the ICC of the pain they can be to higher-ranked sides. Just ask England, who were toppled by the Scots just over a year ago. Incredibly, Scotland have won a live ODI (non- dead rubber) against a top eight side more recently than their more established opponents today. Their two losses against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket have been heavy ones, but with plenty at stake here, expect the Scots to put in a big performance.

On the other hand, so much uncertainty surrounds Sri Lanka just over a week out from a World Cup. Dimuth Karunaratne, who hasn’t played an ODI since the 2015 World Cup, leads a struggling side who have lost all eight ODIs in 2019. The Sri Lankans have a strong record against Associates, and they will want that to continue today as a confidence-booster ahead of a tournament many expect them to find difficult. Can they put together a good performance and get their first win of 2019?

Key to a Scotland win

Sri Lanka’s top order, in their poor run of results since 2017, often has a bad collapse in them. So, an opportunity awaits the Scottish bowlers to get the most out of whatever help is available in the powerplay overs. Conditions are usually great for batting in Edinburgh, but a mixture of cloud cover, cold weather and a changed lineup could give the Sri Lankansa dose of the fritters. Sri Lanka’s possible top four on paper is one that prefers accumulation over power, so the onus is on the Scots to keep things tight early and build pressure that can force get-out shots from the Sri Lankans. This can certainly help Scotland get a foothold in the game and build momentum in the middle overs.

Also, who will lead the way for Scotland with the bat? Calum McLeod has fond memories of top ten ODI opposition, smashing England last June en route to a famous Scotland win. Also, while Kyle Coetzer will be key as always, eyes will be on Matthew Cross, who continues to show promise. His last game vs Sri Lanka, a warm-up before the 2017 Champions Trophy, saw him knock off a fine century. He then scored two ODI centuries last year, including one in the World Cup Qualifiers vs UAE, so he will no doubt be a key man to keep the Sri Lankan new ball bowlers at bay. With Richie Berrington unfortunately out with a broken finger, Scotland need to create a strong platform and build on it.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

This is a very good test for Sri Lanka. Since the beginning of 2017, Sri Lanka have won just 11 of 51 completed ODIs, often relying on individual brilliance to keep them in games. When their top order has done well, their middle order hasn’t and vice versa. Also, when they have bowled well, they have often batted poorly and vice versa. Here, they must put together a team effort to build some confidence ahead of the World Cup, and that starts with their top order. Scotland’s bowlers will certainly be keen to impress, so the platform Sri Lanka’s top order sets will be key. With conditions expected to be good for batting, the likes of Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews will be key in setting a platform for the likes of Thisara Perera to launch.

Also, who will put his hand up to have a big performance with the ball? Suranga Lakmal springs to mind, and the extent to which he threatens with his shape will be key. However, who will support him? Consistent line and length will be key against a Scottish top order that has it in them to fire. Early wickets will be key to help ensure fruitful middle and death over periods for Sri Lanka, with Lasith Malinga certainly capable of causing damage.

One to look forward to. Can Associate Scotland continue their march towards Full Member Status with a win over much-maligned Sri Lanka?

They are a chance, but Sri Lanka should have the experience and talent to win this one.
