We are waiting for a thriller, and this could be it as Mumbai Indians (MI) host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 20th match of IPL 2025. In big news, Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection, with the champion fast bowler joining the MI squad over the weekend.

Mumbai Indians, who have lost twice, need Bumrah (if picked vs RCB) to deliver as quickly as possible. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have lost their third consecutive match in IPL 2025, this time going down by 25 runs against the impressive Delhi Capitals (DC).

CSK’s flaws were on show yet again. They showed glimpses of promise with the ball, but yet again poor deliveries and dropped catches allowed the opposition to get away. In fact, CSK have now dropped ten catches – the most of any team – giving teams that crucial headstart they cannot afford to give considering their misfiring batting unit.

Onto CSK’s batting. Their struggles are underpinned by bad powerplays and a middle order completely lacking impact. With their middle order worries, CSK need strong starts to get them ahead of the game. Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad as their top three is clearly their strength, and all missed out.

For DC, this was an efficient outing. KL Rahul led the way brilliantly with the bat on a tricky Chepauk track where the ball was holding up on occasion. He had support throughout the innings as DC showcased the kind of team balance that is the envy of other teams at the moment, including CSK themselves.

Since scoring 62/1 in the powerplay against MI, CSK have managed scores of 30/3, 42/1 and 46/3 in the next three games. As a result, they have been behind the game in all of their run chases, coming somewhat close against RR but falling well short by 50 runs and 25 runs against RCB and DC respectively.

Fans and pundits have pointed to CSK’s misfiring middle order that relies on Shivam Dube to deliver. With Devon Conway brought in as opener and Dube out of form, CSK significantly lack middle order power than can change the game. Vijay Shankar struggled badly despite making a half-century, as he and Dhoni batted nine overs together in what felt like a training exhibition.

KL Rahul, elevated to opener in Faf du Plessis’ absence, made the opportunity count in the Chennai heat. He showed intent immediately, and kept the pressure on CSK right throughout his 51-ball 77. At times, it seemed he was batting on a different pitch as he excelled especially against the in-form Noor Ahmad.

Abishek Porel (33 off 20 balls) and Tristan Stubbs (24 off 12 balls) also chipped in with impactful knocks. DC maintained a run rate of about nine right throughout, with their eventual total of 183/6 putting them in a fantastic position.

With the ball, Mukesh Kumar and Mitchell Starc wasted no time in making inroads into the top order. After another quiet CSK powerplay, the hosts were never in the game as DC eased to a win.

Just like in 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have thrashed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025, sparking widespread reactions. KKR found themselves in early trouble after Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine were out cheaply, but they totally dominated thereafter.

Ajinkya Rahane (38 off 27) and Angrish Raghuvanshi (50 off 32) led a recovery. Both were dismissed in quick succession in the 11th and 13th overs, giving SRH an avenue back in the contest. However, SRH’s bowling, which has lacked control and threat so far this season, failed to capitalise, with Venkatesh Iyer (60 off 29) and Rinku Singh (32* off 17) putting away some poor death bowling.

At the halfway mark, 200 seemed plenty on a surface offering some grip. Strangely, SRH opted to bowl just four overs of spin, especially when you consider the tweakers took combined figures of 2/29.

“The messages that they [Ajinkya Rahane and Raghuvanshi] sent during the time-out, they made us understand that it’s not an easy pitch to just go out there and hit. You have to take your time,” Venkatesh said to reporters, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “Ball was sticking a little, it was turning.”

With the bat, SRH had no intentions of having a look first. KKR’s attack is too good for such an approach, with all bowlers enjoying success in the franchise’s fifth-straight win against SRH. Spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy were difficult to get away, with man of the match Vaibhav Arora (3/29) delivering in spades after dismissing Travis Head second ball.

SRH criticised for poor all-round show

SRH were terrible. They bowled and fielded poorly, and backed it up with another disappointing batting display where they were chasing their tails from the first few overs.

SRH find themselves in a confusing predicament. Going hard is their mantra and why they enjoyed a run to the final last season. However, they are struggling to find a balance. It feels like every ball must go for a four or six.

After three straight heavy losses in IPL 2025, SRH need to get their act together as a playoffs’ berth will slip away sooner rather than later.

Mendis, who can bowl with both arms, should be a big asset for SRH on a pitch offering assistance for the spinners. Instead, Cummins didn’t use him until the 13th over. Worse, he bowled just the one over.

It was a great all-round show by KKR, who bounced back nicely after the thrashing in Mumbai a few nights ago. After a strong showing by the middle order, all five bowlers took at least one wicket, including 3/29 by Arora who set things up in the powerplay along with Harshit Rana.

Next up for SRH is a home game against in the in-form Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday. GT have won two straight matches and are on a high after beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru away at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will host the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 14th match of IPL 2025. RCB are sitting pretty at the top of the table with two wins in two games. Gujarat, meanwhile, are in fourth position with a win and loss. Both sides have shown good signs, and it promises to be an exciting contest. 

RCB defeated CSK by 50 runs in their last game which is a big boost to their confidence. The batters have been in good form and the bowlers have delivered as a unit. Virat Kohli, Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar will be the key batters for the hosts in this game.  Liam Livingstone’s form with the bat will be a concern and the team management would like to see Jitesh Sharma score some runs as well. Tim David showed his hitting prowess in the last game.

The 13th match of IPL 2025 has the makings of a classic. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), one of the surprise packets, take on fancied Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the first match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium this season.

LSG’s bowling attack has punched above its weight so far, performing better than expected. Shardul Thakur has been the leader, producing a superb performance in Hyderabad last week when SRH were widely expected to put on a massive score.

However, more in line with predictions has been LSG’s batting. Nicholas Pooran has been out of this world, smashing 145 runs at a strike rate of 258.92 so far. Mitchell Marsh has also looked good, but more will be expected of Aiden Markram and Rishabh Pant. On a Lucknow surface that favoured batting in the recent Women’s Premier League, LSG will aim to go big with the bat again.

PBKS will finally line up for their second game, and are seeking to join Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru as the teams with two wins from two games. Shreyas Iyer started magnificently in Ahmedabad last week, while Shashank Singh sent a reminder of his brilliant finishing abilities.
