List of lowest scores defended at a Men’s T20 World Cup

The 2024 T20 World Cup has seen three of the lowest score ever defended in the tournament’s history. After the run-fest that was the 2024 Indian Premier League, bowlers have had a strong say on bowler-friendly surfaces across the West Indies and United States of America.

Top 5 lowest scores defended in men’s T20 World Cup history

Incredibly, the three records were set even before the Super Eights. Here is the list of the top five lowest scores ever defended in the history of the men’s T20 World Cup.

5. 123 by Afghanistan vs. West Indies, Nagpur, 2016

A win that helped catapult Afghanistan cricket to new heights. Their win over eventual champions West Indies in 2016 was a great moment in their history, with their bowlers rallying to limit the strong Windies lineup to 117/8 in pursuit of 124.

Amir Hamza (1/9) was outstanding upfront. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan (both 2/26) kept the squeeze on.

Earlier, the Afghans fought their way to 123/7 with Najibullah Zadran top-scoring with 48* off 40 balls.

4. 119 by Sri Lanka vs. New Zealand, 2014

Rangana Herath took 5/3 on an incredible night for Sri Lanka in Chattogram. New Zealand would have felt right in the game as they restricted the eventual champions to just 119, but they were no match with the bat.

Only Kane Williamson (42 off 42 balls) scored more than five. Herath went on a rampage, bamboozling the Black Caps batsmen with flight and a mix of deliveries that spun and those that went straight on.

3. 119 by India vs. Pakistan, New York, 2024

India put archrivals Pakistan on the brink of elimination when they were on the brink of losing this game. Chasing 120, Pakistan needed 48 off 48 balls with eight wickets in hand and looked odds on to win.

Enter Jasprit Bumrah. He dismissed Mohammad Rizwan to give India a sniff. Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj then kept things tight before Bumrah delivered the knockout blow in the penultimate over that just went for three.

On a tricky New York pitch, India managed just 119. Pakistan’s poor finish was a key reason why they were eventually eliminated.

2. 113 by South Africa vs. Bangladesh, New York 2024

Another game in New York, another record lowest score defended. South Africa held on to pull off an incredible four-run win when Bangladesh looked odds on themselves to win.

In the end, the match was marred by some controversy with Bangladesh denied four leg byes off an LBW decision was successfully overturned on review. But, they still had their chances and couldn’t quite finish the job even with some full tosses delivered.

Earlier, Heinrich Klaasen (46 off 44 balls) and David Miller (29 off 38 balls) took South Africa from the depths to 23/4 to a defendable score.

1. 105 by Bangladesh vs. Nepal, St Vincent, 2024

A Super Eights spot looked in danger for Bangladesh as they fell to 75/8 and 88/9 against a buoyant Nepal attack. But, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman added a crucial 18 runs to help take Bangladesh over the 100-run mark, which looked a defendable total on a difficult batting surface.

Apart from a 52-run stand in the middle between Dipendra Singh Airee and Kushal Malla, Nepal couldn’t cope. Tanzim Hasan Sakib bowled a record 21 dot balls in his four-over burst where he finished with 4/7. Mustafizur Rahman was also magnificent, taking 3/7 which included a penultimate over wicket maiden when Nepal still had a sniff.

The Tigers won by 21 runs to seal their spot in the Super Eights of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

England, who are the defending champions, have a chance to win their second-straight title after a strong finish to the group stage and Australia’s win over Scotland.

Amazing scenes in Kathmandu and stadium highlights cricket-crazy Nepal

For most of the contest, Nepal could dare to dream of a huge scalp. They controlled a lot of the match against the highly-fancied South Africa off the back of their spinners, and then set things up nicely with the bat.

With 18 needed off 21 balls with seven wickets in hand chasing 116, a showdown with Bangladesh for a Super Eights spot looked imminent.

However, it was heartbreak for Nepal. Tears were shed as they fell short, with their inexperience telling in the final overs. Boundaries in the final two overs got the equation to two to win off as many balls, but youngster Gulsan Jha was run out by inches attempting to sneak a bye off the last delivery.

Thousands of fans gather in Kathmandu – scenes that highlight how passionate Nepal is for cricket

The match showed how far Nepal have come and the potential they have. We’ve seen Afghanistan rise rapidly over the past decade, and who knows where Nepal could be in the coming years.

The passion for the sport in the country is highlighted by the amazing scenes in Kathmandu, where thousands of fans gathered from the start of the Nepal-South Africa match which began at 5:15am local time.

The Nepal fans at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown were also magnificent. One fan travelled 16,287 kilometres to cheer for Nepal in this World Cup. His reactions during the match, showcased on the official ICC page, reflect the passion Nepalese fans have for the game.

“We wanted to give a gift to our fans but it didn’t go our way,” said Nepal captain Rohit Paudel in the post-match press conference. He hopes this is the springboard to more games against higher-ranked teams.

“The way we played today, it showed we belong here. This will give us good confidence for the next match against Bangladesh.”

Unfortunately for Nepal, they can no longer qualify for the Super Eights. But, the future looks bright.

Reactions to Pakistan getting knocked out at the group stage of the T20 World Cup

The rain relented for a while in Lauderhill, but Pakistan’s T20 World Cup hopes were still washed away following the abandonment of the USA-Ireland match. The result means the USA qualify to the Super Eights stage with five points; a great moment in their cricketing journey.

Yes, the weather wasn’t kind to Pakistan in the end, but Babar Azam’s team should look inward before blaming any external factors for their elimination. Defeat first up to the USA – a game Pakistan were heavily favoured to win – has proved fatal.

As has the defeat to India, where they were in a glorious position to win.

This campaign has reflected a bit of a trend with Pakistan in recent World Cups. They often start poorly and need to catch up, usually relying on other results to go their way if they are to progress. It was the case in the 2019 ODI World Cup (missed the semi-finals), 2022 T20 World Cup (SA vs ZIM washout and Netherlands beating South Africa opened the door), 2023 ODI World Cup (missed the semi-finals) and now here at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

What this means for the team remains to be seen. Which players will they persist with, and who will they bring in? Those are questions the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) needs to get right with a home Champions Trophy campaign beckoning.

Reactions: Pakistan knocked out from the 2024 T20 World Cup group stage

Group A looked to be one of the more straightforward ones on paper. India and Pakistan stood out like a sore thumb when it came to experience. Ireland, USA and Canada certainly have their strengths, but the two Asian giants were widely expected to qualify.

“At this rate, does Pakistan deserve to make it ahead in the tournament?” tweeted legend Wasim Akram back on June 10. Truth be told, their cricket hasn’t been good enough.

Former Pakistan batsman Ahmad Shahzad minced no words when it came to Pakistan’s campaign.

“The deserving team is through to Super 8 round. If you’re depending on Ireland to defeat someone, you seriously don’t deserve to qualify. Don’t think even “Kudrat Ka Nizam” works for those who are not deserving or ready to improve. All eyes on PCB chairman now!” he tweeted.

Here are some of the reactions from fans, pundits and former players on Pakistan getting knocked out from the World Cup at the group stage.

USA has over 200,000 cricket players in 400 leagues across the country

Cricket in the United States of America (USA) is growing in popularity. The USA team’s excellent performances in the T20 World Cup have added to the increased awareness of the sport in the country, but the groundwork has already been laid.

According to USA Cricket, America is home to more than 400 leagues with over 200,000 players competing. These leagues range from grassroot school programs to academies.

“Cricket is currently being played by over 200,000 players in the United States,” reads the statement.

“These players participate in competitions in the more than 400 local leagues, tournaments, academies, college and school programs across the United States. There are various formats of the game including: hardball, tapeball, softball, disabled and indoor to name a few.”

Cricket growing in popularity in the USA at grassroot level

The key for further growth is encouraging young people to take up the sport. In an interview with CBS News, Sham Chotoo, a cricket coach in the USA, aims to share the joys of the game after moving to America from Trinidad and Tobago three decades ago.

Chotoo started a cricket progam to encourage children to play. The program became the first elementary school cricket league in the USA.

Now, the program has over 1,000 children playing cricket across 86 teams.

“Back then [30 years ago], it was mainly the immigrant population playing cricket,” Chotoo said. “It was a fun way to get together.”

“And I said, well, why don’t I start a cricket program here?”

13-year-old Jordyn Hinkle-Walker is one of cricket’s advocates, according to Chotoo. “When I first started playing, my mother was like, ‘girl what are you doing?'” said Hinkle-Walker.

She, as as well as other students, love the sport.

“It was crazy,” Chotoo said. “You see they would get so excited, and you see their whole faces would light up.”

USA on the brink of qualifying to the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Cup

The Florida rainfall is likely to see the USA qualify to the Super Eights. It is a remarkable situation given powerhouses India and Pakistan are in their group.

The victory over Pakistan got Americans talking about cricket. And given its growing popularity, one feels it will only become more popular in the coming years.

Ricky Ponting delivers commentary gem before Virat Kohli dismissal vs USA

Ricky Ponting was at his very best in commentary once again, this time predicting how Virat Kohli could be dismissed against the USA.

He provided insight into how teams have been bowling to India’s star batsman in this World Cup. The wider line has worked a treat.

“In this tournament so far, teams are looking to bowl a lot wider to Virat than ever before, (he was) caught at third man in the first game [against Ireland],” said Ponting on Amazon Prime’s coverage.

Kohli was then dismissed first ball, nicking behind off Saurabh Netravalkar’s left-arm seam. The opener played the ball quite a fair way away from his body, with the former Australian captain stating he may have been expecting the ball to come back in.

Dinesh Karthik comments on Ricky Ponting after Virat Kohli dismissal

“We were just talking about the line,” said Ponting after Kohli was dismissed. “The bowlers just look to bowl to him slightly wider outside the off-stump, trying to making him find it and feel for the ball with his hands.”

“All the homework they (India) would’ve done would be about Netravalkar swinging the ball back into the right-hander. This one didn’t, it was pushed across, what a breakthrough.”

During the commentary, Dinesh Karthik commented on Ponting’s ability to predict dismissals. The former Australian captain has done so on many occasions, particularly when working for Channel 7 during Australia’s home seasons.

“You’ve done it one too many times now, it must feel really good as a commentator when you speak about something and that exactly happens,” Karthik laughed.

“Not that you wanted Virat to get out but about how they attack outside off stump.”

Netravalkar soon dismissed Rohit Sharma to continue his dream tournament. India were reduced to 10/2 in pursuit of USA’s respectable 110/8 on a tricky New York pitch, with the co-hosts dreaming of another major upset after prevailing over Pakistan last week.

But, it wasn’t to be as Suryakumar Yadav (50* off 49 balls) and Shivam Dube (31* off 35 balls) led India to safety with seven wickets and 10 balls to spare.

With the win, India sealed their qualification to the Super Eights. However, they will want Kohli to find form, with the opener scoring just 1, 4 and 0 in his first three games after winning the Orange Cap in the recent IPL.

India’s final group game will be against Canada in Lauderhill, which has copped a deluge of rain in recent times. The weather is likely to be kind to the USA team, who only need a washout against Ireland to qualify.

Lauderhill Florida weather forecast for USA vs IRE & PAK vs IRE

Pakistan and Ireland will be looking at the Lauderhill Florida weather forecast with great anxiety. Both need to win their remaining matches to stand a chance of qualifying to the Super Eights stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Ireland are scheduled to take on USA on Friday. If it’s a washout, USA will progress, knocking out both Pakistan and Ireland in the process. If Ireland win, it will come down to a Pakistan-Ireland shootout on the 16th of June.

Heavy rain has lashed through southern Florida, causing flash flooding and multiple warnings. The Sri Lanka-Nepal match was washed out, effectively knocking the Lions out. Chances of the next games going ahead look bleak with more rain to fall.

What does the Lauderhill Florida weather forecast look like for the Group A matches?

According to reputable source AccuWeather, there is 22.9mm of rain expected during the day.

Interestingly, the hourly forecast predicts mostly cloudy weather from 10am onwards, which is when USA vs Ireland is scheduled to begin. Also, Vimal Kumar, a cricket reporter, is showing live updates of the Lauderhill weather on his YouTube channel. He has said that there has mostly been no rain in the past 12 hours.

Talk Before Wicket, based in the USA, reported that light rain was falling in Lauderhill at around 8am local time.

There is also the issue of the state of the outfield. There has been a lot of rain over the past week, so whether the outfield will be ready in time remains to be seen.

If the weather does not relent, both Ireland and Pakistan will be eliminated before their match on Sunday. USA will move to five points, which is more than what Pakistan and Ireland can reach.

Sunday’s forecast looks iffy, but more promising. It will still be very cloudy, but AccuWeather predicts just 2.9mm will fall during the day, providing hope of a match.

If USA vs Ireland is washed out, Pakistan and Ireland will be playing for pride only on Sunday. Both teams will be ruing unexpected losses, with Pakistan going down to USA then losing a game they had in their grasp against India. Ireland lost to Canada after conceding 137 – easily the highest score in difficult batting conditions in New York.

Lauderhill Florida weather forecast for Sunday 16 June.

USA vs IND Dream11 Prediction, Fantasy Cricket Tips, Possible XIs, Pitch Report – 2024 T20 World Cup 25th Match

United States of America (USA) will challenge India (IND) in the 25th match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The venue for this game is the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

USA are off to a flying start to the tournament as they defeated Canada in their first game and then defeated Pakistan by five runs in the Super Over. They are in the 2nd position in Group A. This will be a totally different challenge for them as India is in exceptional form, especially, the bowlers. USA batters will have to be at their best to give their side any chance of winning against India.

Monank Patel, Aaron Jones, Corey Anderson, Saurabh Netravalkar & Ali Khan will be the key players for their side. They’ll have to perform as a group for USA to give any sort of fight to the Indian team.

India, on the other hand, are coming off a special win against Pakistan in their last game. They won the game by six runs defending 119. The Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack has been in top form. Mohammad Siraj & Arshdeep Singh have also been brilliant.

Rohit Sharma has looked in good touch but a big knock is due. However, the biggest surprise is Virat Kohli’s form. But he’s a quality player and is expected to do well in this game. Rishabh Pant has done really well at number three while Axar Patel too did well with both bat and ball in the last match. India will be eyeing to seal their spot in the Super 8 by winning this game.

Fantasy Cricket Tips for the 25th Match of the T20 World Cup: Top Dream11 Picks for USA vs IND

Top Batter Picks:

  • Virat Kohli: Despite his poor form in the first two games, Virat will be a must-pick for this game. He will open the innings and will be eager to do well in this game and get back into form.
  • Rohit Sharma: Indian skipper is another must-pick in your fantasy teams. He has looked to be aggressive from the start and can score big on his day when he gets going. Rohit scored a fifty against Ireland in the first game.
  • Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant looked in sublime touch in the last match. He scored crucial 40-odd runs to help his side to competitive total. Pant will fetch points from wicket-keeping as well and will be a top C/VC pick as well.

Top All-Rounder Picks:

  • Corey Anderson: Corey Anderson is one of the most important players for USA. He will bat in the middle order and will contribute with the ball as well. Anderson hasn’t got a lot of opportunities in the first two games but is expected to bat in this game and may bowl an over or two.
  • Axar Patel: Axar Patel is another top pick for this game. He batted at 4 in the last game and with 2 left-arm orthodox spinners in the USA line-up he may get promoted in this game too.
  • Hardik Pandya: Hardik Pandya brings a lot of value with both bat and ball in your fantasy teams. He may not contribute a lot with the bat but is bowling really well and can pick up a wicket or two easily. Pandya picked up 2 wickets in the last game.

Top Bowler Picks:

  • Jasprit Bumrah: Not much needs to be said. The great bowler is in great form. Make him C/VC in your fantasy teams.
  • Saurabh Netravalkar: Saurabh Netravalkar can trouble the Indian openers who struggle a bit against left-arm pace. There is ample help here for the new ball pacers, especially in the first innings due to the moisture present in the pitch. Netravalkar was the star in USA’s triumph against Pakistan.
  • Mohammad Siraj: Mohammad Siraj bowled well in the last game and will be an excellent pick for this game. He can swing the new ball and can bowl into the wicket which has been very fruitful in New York.

Other Players to consider in your Fantasy Cricket Teams

  • Ravindra Jadeja: India have avoided using a lot of spin on the pitch at New York so this reduces Jadeja’s role significantly. Try him in GLs/Mini GLs.
  • Arshdeep Singh: Arshdeep Singh will bowl with the new ball and can pick up a couple of wickets upfront in the power play. He will be good pick for this game irrespective of the toss.

Nassau County International Cricket Stadium New York Pitch Report & Weather

The pitch has played better in the last couple of games compared to the initial matches but it’s still a very difficult pitch for batting. It will get a bit better in every game but expect the bowlers to dominate this game too. There will be ample help for the pacers in the first innings. Teams may prefer chasing but toss does not hold that much value at this venue.

Humidity will be around 60% during the match time. The temperature will be around 21-24 degrees Celsius with no chance of rain.

Australia set to rest players in final group game against Scotland

Australia sealed their qualification to the Super Eights stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup after they smashed Namibia by nine wickets with a huge 86 balls to spare in Antigua.

After winning the toss and opting to field, Australia never looked back. Three powerplay wickets sent the Namibians into freefall, eventually falling to 27/5 at the halfway mark. They then crumbled to 43/8, with skipper Gerhard Erasmus (36) eventually accounting for half of his team’s 72.

In response, Australia went about finishing things as quickly as possible. David Warner hit 20 off eight balls, while Travis Head (34* off 17 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (18* off 9 balls) remained unbeaten.

Qualification will allow Australia to rotate players against Scotland

Australia’s preparation was disjointed heading into this T20 World Cup, with a number of players featuring at the business end of the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL). The likes of Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc joined the team just days before their tournament opener against Oman.

In fact, four members of the support staff, including selector George Bailey and coach Andrew McDonald were in the field as Australia named nine for their warm-up game against Namibia.

So, Australia will welcome some rotation for the final game against Scotland, especially given that no points are carried over to the Super Eights stage.

“It gets very busy after the game against Scotland, so we’ll manage people as best we can in the next few days,” said captain Mitchell Marsh in the post-match presentation.

Before the Namibia game, coach McDonald hinted at possibly resting players if they sealed qualification.

“[Against] Namibia, we need a win to guarantee ourselves a way through,” McDonald said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “And then after that, once we’ve firmed up that qualification, then we can start to look at that potential [to rest players] if we feel like it’s necessary… we know if we win this one, then we get the ‘Q’ next to our name.”

Australia face the possibility of playing five games in 10 days if they do reach the final. It is something McDonald and the coaching staff are aware off.

“We’ve got a short turnaround from the England game into this one [against Namibia]. There’s travel involved… we believe that whatever XI we put out there, it’s going to be very, very strong.

“Clearly there’s a great challenge there for teams to navigate through the Super Eights: game, travel, game, travel, game. It’s going to be difficult in how you manage your resources and make sure they are ready to perform with short turnarounds.

There’s a bit of an art to that. It may not necessarily be a locked XI through that period for teams. But they’re hypotheticals: we’ve got Namibia in front of us first.”

The news won’t be pleasing for England. They need a big win by Australia against Scotland, while they also need to beat Oman and Namibia by decent margins.

Australia’s possible XI vs Scotland

Australia could opt to rest Travis Head and Pat Cummins after their respective short turnarounds. Also, Mitchell Starc missed the Namibia due to calf soreness, so more time to recover would make sense.

Expect Josh Inglis, Cameron Green and Ashton Agar to have some game time.

Possible Playing XI: 1. Josh Inglis, 2. David Warner, 3. Mitchell Marsh (c), 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Cameron Green, 6. Matthew Wade (wk), 7. Tim David, 8. Ashton Agar, 9. Nathan Ellis, 10. Josh Hazlewood, 11. Adam Zampa

PAK vs CAN Dream11 Prediction, Fantasy Cricket Tips, Possible XIs, Pitch Report – 2024 T20 World Cup 22nd Match

After a horror start to their campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan (PAK) will be against Canada (CAN) in a match where they’ll be quite confident of registering their first win of the tournament. The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York will host this game.

It has been a very difficult phase of Pakistan cricket as they first lost against USA and then failed to chase down 119 runs against India after being in a commanding position. The middle order has struggled quite badly and has failed to complement the bowlers who have been in good form recently.

Usman Khan has failed in the two games and there are chances that Saim Ayub may replace him. Fakhar Zaman has looked in good touch but has failed to score big. Babar and Rizwan have also failed to convert their starts into big scores. The batting unit must perform consistently before it’s too late for Pakistan.

The bowlers have been in good form in the couple of games. The pace quadrat of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Amir have been brilliant. Imad Wasim also bowled well in the last game meanwhile Shadab’s poor form with the ball is a concern.

Canada, on the other hand, defeated Ireland in their last game by 12 runs. Their batters scored the highest total (137 runs) at New York in this tournament and the bowlers then did a great job in defending that. But this will be a very challenging game for them as a team.

Their batters will have to at their best to give themselves any chance of winning this match. The bowlers will also have to be very disciplined with their lines & lengths as the Pakistani batters will be determined to attack them in this match. Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva, Dillon Heyliger & Jeremy Gordon will be the key players for Canada in this match.

2024 T20 World Cup 22nd Match: PAK vs CAN Possible Playing XIs

Pakistan: Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Babar Azam (c), Usman Khan/Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir

Canada: Aaron Johnson, Navneet Dhaliwal, Pargat Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva (wk), Dilpreet Singh, Dillon Heyliger, Saad Bin Zafar (), Nikhil Dutta, Kaleen Sama, Jeremy Gordon

Fantasy Cricket Tips for the 22nd Match of the T20 World Cup: Top Dream11 Picks for PAK vs CAN

Top Batter Picks:

  • Babar Azam: Babar Azam will be eager to lead his side from the front and do well in this game. He will open the innings and can score big if Pakistan bats first. He will be a top pick for this match.
  • Mohammad Rizwan: Mohammad Rizwan has looked in decent touch in the first two games and a big score is due from him. He likes to take his time and play till the end. Another top pick for this game.
  • Shreyas Movva: Shreyas Movva’s two scores in the first two games are: 37 & 32 runs. He is a key batter for his team in the middle order and is in good form as well. Movva may fetch points from wicket-keeping as well.

Top All-Rounder Picks:

  • Imad Wasim: Imad Wasim was excellent in the last game against India. He was unlucky to go wicketless but he will fancy his chances against Canada in this match. Imad is capable with the bat as well.
  • Dillon Heyliger: Dillon Heyliger has picked up three wickets in the first two games. He will be a key bowler for his side and can also swing the bat. Heyliger will be a good pick for this match.

Top Bowler Picks:

  • Naseem Shah: Naseem Shah picked up three wickets in the last game against India. He bowled with the new ball which makes him a very valuable fantasy pick for this match.
  • Shaheen Afridi: Shaheen Afridi is capable of picking up 2-3 wickets in the power play and this might be the game where goes berserk with the new ball. Try him as C/VC in this game.
  • Haris Rauf: Haris Rauf has been in good form in the first two games. He picked up three wickets against India and can trouble the Canadian batters with his pace on a tricky batting pitch.
  • Mohammad Amir: Mohammad Amir is another great pick for this game. He can swing the new ball and also bowled well in the death overs against India.

Other Players to consider in your Fantasy Cricket Teams

  • Shadab Khan: It’s unlikely that Shadab will get the chance to bat in this game and his bowling form is not that great. Pakistan’s pacers are supposed to pick bulk of the wickets so Shadab becomes a bit risky pick for this game. Try him in GLs/Mini GLs.
  • Usman Khan/Saim Ayub (Whoever Plays): Pick whoever plays between Saim Ayub and Usman Khan in this match. Both will bat in the top 3 and can score big especially if Pakistan bats first.
