  • Aiden Markram has flourished since he started batting at No. 4. Markram has made 893 runs at an average of 35.72 and struck at 140.40 at number 4 since 2022. He can also use himself as a matchup bowler against the West Indies’ southpaws.
  • David Miller has been consistent in this format for a while now. He played a 48-run knock at a strike rate of 218.18 in the last game. Miller hit four boundaries and three maximums.
  • Sisanda Magala is a utility player. In the first match, he made 18 runs off just five balls with the bat and took 3/21 in a high-scoring encounter. He will be vital again.

West Indies:

  • Johnson Charles has been in supreme form in the T20s this year. He has scored 336 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 149.33 in 2023.
  • Nicholas Pooran looked in fine touch during a short stay yesterday. He is an experienced campaigner and can be backed to score big.
  • Rovman Powell was at his threatening best in the first game. He smashed 43 off mere 18 deliveries, which included one boundary and five maximums. Powell was also the man of the match for his match-winning knock.
  • Sheldon Cottrell can move the new ball in the powerplay. If there will be some assistance off the deck, he might scalp a few early wickets.
  • Alzarri Joseph has been in good form with the ball on this tour. He might trouble the Proteas batters with his bounce and pace again.

Gujarat Titans (GT) defied the odds in IPL 2022. Tipped by many to do it tough in their debut season, the Titans, led by the gritty Hardik Pandya, pulled off a stunning triumph. They achieved both efficient and impossible wins throughout the campaign, and will be aiming to produce another memorable season in 2023.

GT IPL 2023 Preview: Strengths & Weaknesses

Here are our strengths and weaknesses for the current champions, also touching on their opportunities and threats.

Strengths/Opportunities:

Hardik Pandya’s leadership

Speaking of Hardik Pandya, his terrific leadership was a key factor in Gujarat’s success. Instead of seeing challenges, such as slow surfaces, as barriers, he looked at them as opportunities to drive the team forward. His on-field tactics, including how he marshalled his fielders and bowlers, was so crucial in GT’s match-to-match consistency.

And, of course, the captaincy brought out the best in Pandya’s all-round performance. He scored the fourth-most runs (487) and also contributed with the ball. If he produces anything like that (which he certainly can), Gujarat will be held in good stead.

Middle order that can pull off stunning chases

Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad. One key aspect of GT’s 2022 campaign was how they won matches from seemingly impossible positions. Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan, who were architects of some of their stunning chases, are assets once again. They also have hard-hitting all-rounder Odean Smith in their squad, who can prove to be a shrewd pickup.

Also, the wonderful David Miller is on deck. Last season, Miller hit 220 runs when chasing at an average of 110 and strike rate of 143.8.

Shubman Gill in magnificent touch

What a year Shubman Gill is having. He is now one of the few Indian players to have scored a century in all three formats, and he is well placed to have a massive season.

Solid balance of pace and spin options

The great Rashid Khan is coming off a brilliant PSL campaign. Mohammed Shami was outstanding in 2022, and he is an asset once again in 2023. In amongst that, GT will have at least one solid overseas seamer in their attack in the form of Alzarri Joseph or Josh Little, with the Irishman having the potential to be one of the best purchases in the league.

Also, Hardik Pandya in bowling form gives the Titans so much more flexibility should one or two of the frontline bowlers have an off day.

Weaknesses/Threats

Batting lineup still shorter compared to other teams

Yes, GT have players who can pull off stunning chases. However, the fact is they lack some of the depth that other teams possess, and relying on bowling all-rounders to deliver time after time is a risk.

Can Matthew Wade, Kane Williamson and Wriddhiman Saha deliver?

Speaking of the middle order, the top order need to ensure they set good platforms more often than not. Gill, as mentioned, is capable of delivering, but can Saha, Wade, Willamson and co. do so too?

Saha had a solid 2022 campaign with 312 runs at an average of 39.00 at a strike rate of 121. Wade, on the other hand, averaged just 20.3 with a strike rate of 120.5. Williamson struggled even more last season, coming in for huge criticism for his sub-100 strike rate.

With at least two of the three likely to start, they will want to quash questions quickly around their strike rates and hit the ground running to reduce pressure on a middle order that is capable of recovery. However, you don’t want to play around with the law of averages.

Verdict

On deck at Ahmedabad in front of huge crowds this season, GT will certainly be among the contenders to qualify for the playoffs. I back them to finish top of the league and challenge for the title once again.

The final of the inaugural Women’s Premier League – a groundbreaking tournament for women’s cricket – is upon us. And no one can deny that the two best teams – Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) – will contest the title; the chance to win the inaugural tournament that can set either team up for further success in future years.

All along, it seemed as though MI were heading straight to the final. Instead, DC qualified directly, but MI’s superb victory in their do-or-die Eliminator against UP Warriorz can hold them in good stead. Indeed, Nat Sciver’s wonderful innings and Issy Wong’s memorable hat-trick are a taste of what members of this excellent MI team are capable of producing.

For Delhi, they will be out to emulate the kind of efficient performance that has served them well since they were thumped by MI. They returned the favour soon after, and then beat UP Warriorz in their final league game to finish top thanks to Alice Capsey’s wonderful all-round display.

If either team can make inroads into the other’s top order, they could very well be on their way to the title. Both teams have often counted on their top three or four to make the bulk of the runs, so pressure on the middle order in a big game can prove crucial.

  • Marizanne Kapp was player of the match when DC smashed MI. She dismissed Yastika Bhatia and Nat Sciver-Brunt in a superb opening burst.
  • Alice Capsey won player of the match in DC’s last outing. The all-rounder took 3/26 with her excellent offspin, followed by a vital 31-ball 34.
  • Capsey has scored 38, 22, 38* and 34 in her past four matches. X-Factor player.

Mumbai Indians:

  • Nat Sciver-Brunt produced an all-round performance for the ages in the Eliminator (72* and 1/21). She now has 272 runs in WPL 2023 (third-most) at a strike rate of 149.45, along with ten wickets.
  • Sciver-Brunt can be the key player between overs 7-16. She has scored 190 runs in this period at a superb strike rate of 147.3 (four dismissals).
  • Harmanpreet Kaur has also been excellent in the middle overs. The MI captain has belted 202 runs at an average of 50.5 and strike rate of 144.3 in this period in WPL 2023.
  • Hayley Matthews has made starts in recent matches (35, 5, 24, 26). This is the perfect chance to go big.
  • Expect MI to try Saika Ishaque early. Meg Lanning has got out to left-arm orthodox twice in 48 balls in WPL 2023, although she has struck an impressive 79 runs. Shafali Verma has also been dismissed twice to left-arm orthodox, for a total of 56 runs in 33 balls.
  • Issy Wong is fresh off a superb hat-trick. Between overs 7-16 in WPL 2023, she has taken total figures of 4/54 off 9.1 overs. At the death, she has picked up three wickets in 24 balls (35 runs).

Delhi Capitals have been the “nearly men” of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in recent seasons. They reached the final in 2020, followed by heartbreaking exits in 2021 and 2022. Last season, a playoffs’ spot was in their grasp, before some poor decision making and execution cost them dearly in their final league match against Mumbai Indians.

Consistency will be high on the agenda for DC this season. They were unable to string wins together last year, embarking on a win-loss pattern that ultimately saw them fall short of the top four in a competitive league.

David Warner has been named captain in the absence of Rishabh Pant. How the franchise deals with Pant’s absence will be crucial. In this article, we will preview the Capitals ahead of IPL 2023 looking at their key strengths and weaknesses.

DC IPL 2023 Preview: Strengths & Weaknesses

Here we’ll look at DC’s key strengths and weaknesses for IPL 2023, as well as touch on their opportunities and threats.

Strengths/Opportunities

David Warner and Prithvi Shaw opening combination

The Warner-Shaw combination has the potential to be the best in IPL 2023. Shaw’s powerplay exploits and Warner’s experience will be vital to Delhi’s hopes. On the slow Delhi pitches, a fast start against the hard new ball can prove crucial in the final analysis.

Wicket-taking options in their pace battery

In Anrich Nortje and Khaleel Ahmed, DC have two wicket-taking options who are expected to line up right away. But, in their squad, they also have a number of capable options they can turn to throughout the campaign.

In terms of the overseas options, Mustafizur Rahman can be a handful with his cutters on the Feroz Kotla pitch. Lungi Ngidi is a genuine wicket-taker in T20s.

Domestically, Chetan Sekariya continues to improve, and will be better for the experience of the past two seasons. Mukesh Kumar is highly rated and how Kamlesh Nagarkoti fares this season will be interesting to see, as the potential is there.

Resurgence of Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav is back, further evidenced by his performances in the recent ODI series against Australia. The left-arm chinaman spinner was also in terrific form at stages in IPL 2022, and if he can replicate some of that here, we can expect DC to win overs 7-16 very often.

Also, Kuldeep, along with Axar, can be a handful in their home games, while offering important control away from home, too.

Weaknesses/Threats

DC’s finishing

DC’s finishing stocks looks a worry. A lot will rest on Rovman Powell in this department, with Rishabh Pant, who usually occupies the number five slot, out of the tournament.

The expected top three of Warner, Marsh and Shaw can provide magnificent starts throughout, but DC will want to build on that. Also, they don’t want to only be relying on quick or big starts to produce competitive totals.

Sixth bowling option

DC will have five solid bowling options upfront. However, can their sixth bowler offer enough control?

Mitch Marsh can contribute, but his fitness is often in question given his injury history. With DC needing a keeper, Sarfaraz Khan may keep and bat at six. So, there may not be room for Lalit Yadav if Manish Pandey is also picked, which means DC will bank on their top five bowlers delivering.

Verdict

DC will be competitive. However, much may rest on their top order. In a competitive, tight league, that may ultimately be costly with playoffs spots at a premium.

Following on from SA20 2023, captains in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) can confirm their playing XI after the coin toss. In the IPL, skippers will walk out with two teamsheets, with scope to choose their preferred team depending on whether they bat or bowl first.

An internal note from the IPL, seen by ESPNcricinfo, said “Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss. This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player.”

“One of the major reasons we did it was to try and lessen the impact of the toss on the outcome of the game, and create an opportunity for deliberation depending on whether teams are batting or bowling,” said Smith back in January.

  • For every over not completed in the allocated time, teams will face a penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

Plenty of attention will be on KL Rahul’s strike rate. However, if at least two others in their top five can fire, LSG will be on track for some big totals in IPL 2023.

Watch out for Deepak Hooda. He could be in for a big season. When batting at three in all T20s, Hooda has smashed 961 runs in 30 matches at an average of 34.32 and strike rate of 148.76. To have such a player, who can also bowl handy offspin, coming in after the Rahul-de Kock opening stand can put opposition teams under immense pressure.

Wicket-takers among their pace bowlers & wide range of bowling options

Moisin Khan in the powerplay. Avesh Khan in the middle. Mark Wood (when available) at the death. All three seamers are genuine wicket-takers in T20 cricket, which can hold LSG in great stead. Also, Ravi Bishnoi’s wristspin provides an advantage where other teams, including MI and CSK, are lacking in that department.

Add Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, Deepak Hooda and Marcus Stoinis, and KL Rahul has the luxury of turning to different bowlers if one or two are having an off day.

Capable overseas options waiting in the squad

Daniel Sams came into his own towards the backend of IPL 2022 after a very difficult start. He is not expected to be a regular starter, but he can come in and offer value throughout the season.

The same applies to Romario Shepherd and Kyle Mayers. Both are hard-hitting all-rounders that can offer impact in a long campaign.

Weaknesses/Threats

Can Nicholas Pooran finally find consistency in the IPL?

LSG invested big in Pooran, who has often found the going difficult in the IPL. If he struggles again, LSG have a conundrum as that number four position is vital in effectively bridging LSG’s top order and finishers. If he fires, however, then this could be a huge gamechanger.

Can LSG effectively replace Jason Holder?

The decision to release Jason Holder has left a bit of a gap to fill. The all-rounder was an asset at number seven for the franchise, also bowling some of the toughest overs at the death. Krishnappa Gowtham could take that position, so whether he can deliver impact with both bat and ball remains to be seen.

Verdict

Overall, LSG looks extremely strong. They have batting quality right down the order with hard-hitters in their top five, along with wicket-taking bowling options throughout their attack.

If they don’t make the playoffs, it will be a surprise and disappointment for what looks to be an excellent T20 team.
