Will Kane Williamson continue playing T20 cricket?

Cricket News: Will Kane Williamson continue playing T20 cricket? | Kane Williamson on whether he will play T20 cricket

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has revealed that the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) management had informed him about their decision to release him and hence he was not particularly surprised at the call.

Williamson insisted that he wishes to continue playing all three formats and warded off any questions over hanging his boots from T20 cricket.

I love playing all formats, including T20 – Kane Williamson

“There are a lot of competitions around the world, and the IPL is certainly an amazing competition to be a part of,” Williamson was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.

He added, “You see players play for different teams all the time. There are a lot of options, lot of cricket, so for me, I love playing all formats.”

“That’s the way it goes, I had a really enjoyable time at SRH, I have a lot of fond memories. It wasn’t a surprise when it [retention list] was officially released,” the 32-year-old quipped on his final communication with the SRH management.

The SRH management is certainly eyeing a mini-rebuild in the upcoming auction as they now have the biggest purse amongst all teams, i.e. Rs 42.25 crore. Williamson cost them Rs 14 crore as their top retention last year and releasing him along with Rs 11.25 crore worth Nicholas Pooran has significantly bolstered their ability to spend big next month.

Williamson had led SRH with aplomb to finish as the runners-up in the 2018 edition of the tournament. However, he struggled to get going with the bat last year as he scored only 216 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 93.50.

The Kiwi captain was also bothered constantly by a troublesome elbow condition. Williamson, however, is harboring his hopes on the player auction next month, having said that he is going to wait and watch till then. He refused to comment on any approaches by other IPL teams so far.

Williamson’s strike rate has been under scanner in T20Is as well. He has scored at a rate of 117.32 and 119 in T20Is in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Regardless of that, his stature is arguably big enough to command a bidding war in the auction next month.

Which team do you think will look to acquire him ahead of the coming season of the IPL? Let us know on Twitter @cric_blog.

NZ vs IND 1st T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

NZ vs IND 1st T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | IND vs NZ Dream11 Prediction Today | Wellington Pitch Report

A week ago, both New Zealand and India were pushing for an appearance in the 2022 T20 World Cup Final. It didn’t materialise for either team, but there is no time to dwell on their respective semi-final defeats as the T20 action is right back on their doorsteps. Indeed, cricket’s schedule is full on.

Looking back, both sides made under-par totals in the semi-finals. New Zealand’s 152 was not enough against Pakistan, and India’s 168 was chased with the utmost ease by England. This T20I series represents an opportunity to begin putting some new processes in place, with the Black Caps looking to win at home while India’s batting approach is under the spotlight.

In bilateral T20Is this year, India have scored at 8.59 runs per over in the powerplay. This is in contrast to the woeful 6.02 they delivered in the recent World Cup. For New Zealand, Finn Allen is the player who can take the game away, but will be aiming to produce that sort of form a little more regularly.

NZ vs IND 1st T20 Possible Playing XI

Kane Williamson will be keen to make a mark after getting released by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. Trent Boult will not play in this series – a consequence of the left-armer being released from his NZC contract earlier this year.

New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Daryl Mitchell, 6. James Neesham, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Adam Mline/Blair Tickner, 10. Ish Sodhi, 11. Lockie Ferguson

Hardik Pandya will lead India. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain, and may open. The likes of Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan could get an opportunity.

India: 1. Shubman Gill, 2. Ishan Kishan, 3. Shreyas Iyer/Sanju Samson, 4. Suryakumar Yadav, 5. Hardik Pandya (c), 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Washington Sundar/Deepak Hooda, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Yuzvendra Chahal, 10. Arshdeep Singh, 11. Umran Malik/Harshal Patel

NZ vs IND T20I Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

  • Chahal has dismissed Kane Williamson twice in 47 balls for 58 runs in T20Is.

NZ vs IND 1st T20 Match Prediction: Who will win?

In this bilateral T20, we may see both sides throw caution to the wind. Chasing might be an advantage with possible dew under lights. But, India, with in-form and exciting players, can win this match.

England hopeful Ben Stokes will come out of ODI retirement

Cricket News: England hopeful Ben Stokes will come out of ODI retirement | Will Ben Stokes come out of ODI retirement?

England’s limited overs head coach Matthew Mott has expressed hopes that star all-rounder Ben Stokes will reverse his decision to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs). Mott said he told Stokes he can always ‘unretire’ to help the team defend the ODI World Cup crown in India next year.

“He’s a three-dimensional player and he has so much to offer. In this team he was the glue – I think we have a lot of guys who can do extraordinary things but he was the player you knew that if he was in you’d win the game,” Mott was quoted in a report by Cricbuzz.

He added, “When he spoke to me about his ODI retirement one of the first things I said was that I’d back any decision he made, but I said to him he didn’t necessarily have to retire, he could just not play 50-overs for a while. And I said: ‘You could always unretire.’”

England not giving up Stokes returning to ODIs after retirement earlier in 2022

Stokes had retired from ODI cricket earlier this year citing the incredibly tight-packed international schedule.

The all-rounder was England’s linchpin in their ODI World Cup victory back in 2019. The southpaw had scored 84 unbeaten runs whilst chasing in the final and also starred in the subsequent Super Over to take England home. He again notched a critical half-century and helped his side sail through a tricky chase against Pakistan in the final of the T20 World Cup at Melbourne on Sunday.

Time and again, Stokes has shown that he is the man for the big occasion. Players with such iron-clad resolve and temperament are worth their weight in gold especially in such high-pressure tournaments. On that backdrop, the English team management will be basking their hopes on their Test skipper to return to the ODI format sometime in the near future. Mott echoed similar thoughts.

“I’ll let him dust off today. He’s his own man and he’ll make his own decisions. He’ll do what’s right for English cricket and he always has. That was part of his decision to retire from ODI cricket. He didn’t think he could give it his all and credit to him for making that decision because he’s such a special commodity for English cricket. We want what’s best for the whole system as well,” Mott mentioned.

England’s men cricket’s managing director Rob Key appreciated the work that Stokes is doing in Test cricket. He quipped that nothing can be ruled out yet, speaking on the 31-year-old’s possible return to the 50-over format. Stokes has scored 2924 runs in 105 ODIs at an average and strike rate of 38.98 and 95.08 including three centuries and 21 half-centuries. He also picked 74 wickets at an economy rate of 6.05.

Faf du Plessis on David Warner: He’s a bully

Cricket News: Faf du Plessis on David Warner: He’s a bully | Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis shares thoughts on David Warner

Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis has termed Australian opener David Warner as a bully in a recent interview with BBC.

Speaking on the infamous South Africa-Australia series of 2018, du Plessis sympathised with the duo of Cameron Bancroft and Steven Smith who were considered to be the architects of the sandpaper gate scandal. However, he did not hold back his words with regards to Warner, possibly due to the southpaw’s nasty skirmish with wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock in the first match of that series in Durban.

Both de Kock and Warner were engaged in a fierce altercation on the field during that game. However, the argument continued on to the dressing room with players from both the teams trying to cool down the tempers during one of the session breaks. Du Plessis, too, had emerged in that incident in an attempt to douse the fire.

Now, he has hit out at Warner for bullying the Proteas throughout that match as he spoke to BBC to promote his recently launched autobiography named ‘Faf: Through Fire’.

Warner was a bully. I don’t have time for bullies – Faf du Plessis

“Australia wanted to bully us. We had to stand up for ourselves. They abused us that whole game but the way we fought back turned the series around,” the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper said, as reported by Fox News. He added, “He (Warner) was a bully. I don’t have time for bullies.”

From his comments, it appears that du Plessis was critical of Warner’s sledging and not exactly of his role in the entire sandpaper-gate incident. The ex-Protea captain acknowledged his own involvement in ball-tampering cases previously. In 2013, he was found guilty of tweaking the condition of the ball with the zipper of his trousers in a Test against Pakistan. In 2016, he was seen applying saliva from a mint on the red cherry in a match against Australia itself.

Du Plessis admitted that he is not a perfect individual. “I’m not perfect. I’ve never claimed to be. I’ve never been the most talented player. Yes, I have talent, but it’s hard work and mental toughness that got me to where I am,” the ex-Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star commented.

3 conservative traits India must fix for future World Cups

Cricket News: 3 conservative traits India must fix for future World Cups | 5 ways India played it safe in the 2022 T20 World Cup

There isn’t much time to review campaigns in the hustle and bustle of the cricketing schedule. After a dismal 10-wicket loss in the T20 World Cup semi-final to England, India will embark on a tour of New Zealand before any significant reviews can take place. Also, news of IPL 2023 releases and the upcoming auction is dominating the headlines.

However, India’s issues are quite clear. Earlier this year, captain Rohit Sharma spoke of a new approach for India in T20Is. But, the 2022 T20 World Cup saw a return to a safe, quite archaic way of playing white-ball cricket, resulting in another missed opportunity for India in a major white-ball event.

Apart from Suryakumar Yadav and at times Virat Kohli, conservative play seemed to be the order of the day. However, in big games against the top teams, such tactics won’t bear fruit. With that in mind, here are three conservative traits that India must overcome for future World Cups.

India & their World Cup troubles: 3 conservative traits they must fix

Cricket News: 5 conservative traits India must fix for future World Cups | 5 ways India played it safe in the 2022 T20 World Cup

1. Using the powerplay as a settling period

In bilateral T20Is in 2022, India scored more than two-and-a-half runs more per over in the powerplay than what they dished up in the World Cup. Compared to a powerplay run rate of 8.59 in bilaterals, the men in blue scored just at just 6.02 in the entire competition, with their effort of 38/1 against England proving to be costly.

Going forward, India must take advantage of the powerplay. Whether it’s a change of personnel (i.e. Rohit, KL Rahul out and Rishabh Pant in) or a change in mindset, India need to look at the first six overs as a period to get ahead, rather than just get set.

Cricket News: 5 conservative traits India must fix for future World Cups | 5 ways India played it safe in the 2022 T20 World Cup
Captain Rohit Sharma was quick to point out the bowlers’ shortcomings, but he was well under-par with the bat.

2. Demand better strike rates from the openers

Following on from point one, India’s opening stand of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul ended with the worst run rate (4.88) of any team in the Super 12s. Quite damning.

Rohit struck at just 106.4 in the whole tournament. KL Rahul fared better, but his strike rate of 120.8 won’t worry many attacks.

If India are to win World Cups, they need more up top to reduce reliance on the likes of Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya to go big only to get India to par scores.

3. Trust wristspinners more

The fact that Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t play a single game in this World Cup spoke volumes of India’s mindset. Chahal, who is often a regular in India’s T20I, was left out with finger spinners R Ashwin and Axar Patel preferred.

Both finger spinners played as defensive options, with the goal of keeping the runs down. With wristspin, India believed they would concede more. However, the wicket-taking threat was non-existent against the higher-ranked sides.

In all games excluding Zimbabwe and Netherlands, India’s spinners took a combined 1/169 in 17 overs. Hardly economical. Hardly threatening.

List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction | Which players have been released?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) fever is certainly heating up now with the auction scheduled to take place next month. 15th November, 2022 was the last day for franchises to confirm their list of retained and released players for the upcoming season of the competition.

There were quite a few surprises in store and let us have a look at all the players that each team has parted ways with ahead of the coming edition of the mega tournament.

IPL 2023 Mini-Auction: List of players released

Gujarat Titans

Released: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Lockie Ferguson, Dominic Drakes, Gurkeerat Singh, Jason Roy, Varun Aaron

Gujarat Titans made some high-profile trades by transferring the duo of Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). They also freed up some purse by letting the domestic duo of Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Varun Aaron leave the franchise. Jason Roy, who was initially tipped to be their first-choice opener last year, has been released as well.

That is an unsurprising move given that Roy pulled out of the tournament in 2022 and was dropped from England’s T20 World Cup squad due to a poor run of form. All-rounder Dominic Drakes won’t be a part of the defending champions heading into the auctions as well.

Rajasthan Royals

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction | Which players have been released?
List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction: James Neesham

Released: Anunay Singh, Corbin Bosch, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Karun Nair, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rassie van der Dussen, Shubham Garhwal, Tejas Baroka

Previous year’s runners-up Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) high-profile releases include the Kiwi duo of James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell along with South African star Rassie van der Dussen. Rookie Corbyn Bosch has been let go as well along with Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. Lucknow Super Giants

Released: Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, Andrew Tye, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Manish Pandey, Shahbaz Nadeem

The KL Rahul-led side has made some prominent calls with respect to their retention and releases. LSG have released Jason Holder and Evin Lewis, irrespective of the fact that the two Caribbean stars has featured extensively for them last year. Manish Pandey has been let go of after a poor campaign whereas Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera who had quite a few impressive outings in 2022 will be back in the auction again. Ankit Rajpoot and Shahbaz Nadeem, who played relatively minimal roles last year, have been released from the squad too.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Released: Jason Behrendorff, Aneeshwar Gautam, Chama Milind, Luvnith Sisodia, Sherfane Rutherford

There is not much to note from the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) releases this year. They traded Jason Behrendoff to Mumbai Indians (MI) and have parted ways with Sherfane Rutherford too. However, neither Rutherford nor any of the other Indian names such as Aneeshwar Gautam, Chama Milind and Luvnith Sisodia actually featured regularly in the playing XI for them in IPL 2022.

Delhi Capitals

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction | Which players have been released?
Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction: Shardul Thakur

Released: Shardul Thakur, Tim Seifert, Ashwin Hebbar, Srikar Bharat, Mandeep Singh

Delhi Capitals have created a lot of space in their auction purse by trading Shardul Thakur to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). They had acquired Thakur for Rs 10.75 crore in the auction and now have the bandwidth to utilize that money to fulfill their other requirements. The other releases include the likes of Mandeep Singh, Srikar Bharat, Ashwin Hebbar and also Tim Seifert who had actually done pretty well at the top of the order in a couple of games for them earlier in the previous campaign.

Punjab Kings

Released: Mayank Agarwal, Odean Smith, Vaibhav Arora, Benny Howell, Ishan Porel, Ansh Patel, Prerak Mankad, Sandeep Sharma, Writtick Chatterjee

Punjab Kings head into the auction eyeing yet another rebuild with a purse over Rs 42 crore. They have let go of Mayank Agarwal who led them last year and also all-rounder Odean Smith. Vaibhav Arora, an impressive young pacer from Himachal Pradesh was also released.

Other released fast-bowlers include Ishan Porel, Sandeep Sharma and also Benny Howell. The new management is definitely aiming at reinvigorating their setup under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan this time around.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction | Which players have been released?
Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction: Pat Cummins

Released: Pat Cummins, Sam Billings, Shivam Mavi, Chamika Karunaratne, Aaron Finch, Alex Hales, Abhijeet Tomar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Sharma, Baba Indrajith, Pratham Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Rasikh Salam, Sheldon Jackson, Mohammad Nabi, Aman Khan

KKR endured a turbulent campaign last year and they are looking to make amends to that by completely shaking up their domestic contingent for starters. Ajinkya Rahane and Sheldon Jackson have been released whereas the likes of Pat Cummins and Alex Hales have opted out of the coming season altogether.

Aaron Finch has been let go of as well along with Shivam Mavi, upon whom KKR had spent a massive Rs 7.25 crore. They have traded Aman Khan to DC and also bid goodbye to the duo of Mohammed Nabi and Chamika Karunaratne. Overall, the team has quite a lot of work to do in the auction table.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Released: Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran, J Suchith, Priyam Garg, R Samarth, Romario Shepherd, Saurabh Dubey, Sean Abbott, Shashank Singh, Shreyas Gopal, Sushant Mishra, Vishnu Vinod

SRH made heads turn by releasing skipper Kane Williamson and their star acquisitions from last year like Nicholas Pooran and Romario Shepherd. The team certainly needs a new captain and quite a few batsmen to fill the gaping holes in their lineup. The likes of Shreyas Gopal and Jagdeesha Suchith have been let go, making room for some utility Indian players in their squad. Overall, the SRH management has quite some work to look forward to after a thoroughly disappointing season last time around.

Chennai Super Kings

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction: Dwayne Bravo

Released: Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa, Adam Milne, C Hari Nishaanth, Chris Jordan, Bhagath Varma, KM Asif, N Jagadeesan

The four-time IPL champions have ended their long association with all-rounder Dwayne Bravo this time around. Robin Uthappa’s retirement rules him out of contention as well. Meanwhile, the team will be looking for new overseas pacers after letting go of Adam Milne and Chris Jordan. Domestic players like Narayan Jagadeesan, C Hari Nishaanth, Bhagath Varma and KM Asif have been released from the squad too. CSK have the capacity to make at least one high-profile acquisition and that could well be their former player Sam Curran.

Mumbai Indians

Cricket News: List of players released by franchises ahead of IPL 2023 Auction: Kieron Pollard

Released: Kieron Pollard, Tymal Mills, Anmolpreet Singh, Aryan Juyal, Basil Thampi, Daniel Sams, Fabian Allen, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Murugan Ashwin, Rahul Buddhi, Riley Meredith, Sanjay Yadav

Mumbai Indians have broken ties with quite a few squad members from last year, including the likes of Basil Thampi, Anmolpreet Singh, Jaydev Unadkat, Murugan Ashwin amongst others. However, the biggest news is that of Kieron Pollard retiring from the IPL and instead becoming the batting coach of the franchise.

Tymal Mills has been let go of as well whereas the likes of Fabian Allen and Riley Meredith might find themselves in the auction pool again. Like a few other franchises, MI too have some rebuilding work to do in the coming month.

AUS vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

AUS vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | AUS vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Adelaide Pitch Report

Hey, England. No time to celebrate the T20 World Cup triumph. On the plane you go to get to Adelaide for the start of a three-match ODI series just a few days later.

This series does represent the start of preparations for next year’s ODI World Cup. But the scheduling of the series, criticised heavily by Moeen Ali, makes it difficult for the tourists to prepare effectively for especially after they were on such a high after beating Pakistan in front of over 80,000 fans at the MCG.

Nevertheless, beating Australia is always cause for motivation. The hosts begin a new era of sorts in one-day cricket, with Pat Cummins set to lead for the first time in the format following Aaron Finch’s retirement. Also, how Australia fares up top will be interesting to see, with Travis Head, who impressed in Pakistan earlier this year, set to have the first shot at replacing Finch at the top full time.

AUS vs ENG 1st ODI Possible Playing XI

Glenn Maxwell broke his leg at a birthday party last Saturday. He is out of the series. Sean Abbott replaced him in the squad.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Travis Head, 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Alex Carey (wk), 7. Cameron Green, 8. Pat Cummins (c), 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Jason Roy, Sam Billings, James Vince are all part of the ODI squad. As are Luke Wood, Olly Stone and Liam Dawson. So, England may look to give these players opportunities over some regulars given the T20 team just won the World Cup on Sunday.

Dawid Malan’s fitness is still up in the air.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. James Vince, 3. Phil Salt/Dawid Malan, 4. Sam Billings, 5. Moeen Ali, 6. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 7. Sam Curran, 8. Chris Woakes/David Willey, 9. Chris Jordan, 10. Liam Dawson/Adil Rashid, 11. Olly Stone/Luke Wood

  • Sam Curran recently won player of the tournament in the T20 World Cup. In the T20I series against Australia before the tournament, Curran ripped through Australia particularly at the death. Also, in the WC itself, Curran took nine wickets for 70 runs in 64 balls in the death overs.

  • Mitch Starc (34.09) and pat Cummins (33.53) both average over 30 against England in 19 and 17 matches respectively.

Adelaide Oval Pitch Report and Weather

A clear and sunny day is forecast for Adelaide, with a top of about 23 degrees. The captain who wins the toss may elect to chase given the possibility of dew, as well as how well England chased in the T20 World Cup semi-final against India last week.

The Adelaide surface should be easy-paced. It got better for batting as the World Cup went on, with batsmen also targeting the short square boundaries.

AUS vs ENG 1st ODI Match Prediction: Who will win?

Given England’s very short turnaround, Australia should win this match.

Moeen Ali slams cricket’s “horrible” schedule

Cricket News: Moeen Ali slams cricket’s “horrible” schedule | England cricketer Moeen on the cricket schedule

All-rounder Moeen Ali has slammed cricket’s crowded schedule as England prepare to face Australia in a three-match ODI series just days after winning the T20 World Cup.

On Sunday, England lifted their second T20 title – and first since 2010 – after defeating Pakistan in front of 80,462 fans at the MCG. In the process, they became the first men’s team to simultaneously hold both the ODI and T20 World Cups.

However, like in 2019, England moved straight onto the next task, with very little time to savour the winning moment. This was at the forefront of Moeen Ali’s mind, who blasted administrators’ decision making.

“It’s been happening for a while; when we won in 2019, we had the Ashes two weeks later and a Test match against Ireland 10 days after winning,” said Moeen on Sunday.

“Those kind of things are a shame. As a group, we want to enjoy and celebrate and have that because you put so much into it as well.

“It’s not just while the tournament’s going on, it’s pre-tournament, your build-up and all that.”

Cricket’s packed schedule: Having a game in 3 days is horrible – Moeen

The all-rounder went on to say that giving 100 per cent all the time is difficult given the sheer nature of cricket’s unrelenting schedule.

“Having a game in three days’ time is horrible, but it’s better than two days if it got rained off.”

“As players we’re kind of used to it now. But to give 100 per cent all the time is difficult when you’re playing every two or three days.

“Well, we have to do it and while we’re here we might as well do it — it would be better than going back and then having to come back out another time,” said Moeen.

England’s series against Australia not part of ODI Super League

England’s three-match series is not part of the ODI Super League. So, the games are essentially friendlies. Such meaningless games have brought about a wider discussion around the future of cricket, with over a third of fans saying that ODIs will be dead by 2037 according to recent survey.

Travis Head, who was named in Australia’s squad for the England series, said he expects the tourists to find it difficult to get up for the series.

“No doubt it will be hard for them,” Head told reporters at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday. “They’ve come off a huge high. It’s going to be tough for them, but then again you’re playing for your country.”

“That’s a personal thing, and guys go about it in different ways.”

The ODI series kicks off on Thursday, November 17 at 2:20pm local time at Adelaide Oval.

Why did Pat Cummins choose to opt out of IPL 2023?

Cricket News: Why did Pat Cummins choose to opt out of IPL 2023? | Details on why Pat Cummins won’t play in the IPL

Pat Cummins has opted out of IPL 2023 citing Australia’s heavy workload. As captain of the Test and ODI teams, Cummins will lead Australia in four Tests in India before the IPL as well as an Ashes series following the showpiece T20 tournament. Also, there is an ODI World Cup later in the year in India.

Cummins tweeted, “I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next year’s IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODIs for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and World Cup.”

In a follow up tweet, Cummins thanked the Kolkata Knight Riders, his franchise over the past few seasons, for their understanding.

“Thanks so much to KKRiders for their understanding. Such a terrific team of players and staff, and I hope I can get back there ASAP.”

Pat Cummins pulls out of IPL 2023: A look at Australia’s huge schedule

After a disappointing World Cup campaign by Australia, Cummins will lead the team in a three-match ODI series against England, followed by Tests against West Indies and South Africa.

After the home season, Australia will tour India for four Tests in February-March. In June and July, Australia will attempt to retain the Ashes away in England, before the ODI World Cup in India scheduled for October 2023.

Should Australia win a Test series in India for the first time since 2004, retain the Ashes and win the World Cup, it will surely go down as one of the nation’s finest ever cricketing years. Indeed, Cummins wants to be as fresh as possible for those campaigns in the quest for greatness.

3 reasons why India were thrashed in semi-final vs England

Cricket News: 3 reasons why India were thrashed in semi-final vs England | Why did India lose so badly to England?

India’s long wait to win an ICC trophy continued as the team was knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2022 following their horrid performance against England in the semi-final. Now, India have lost the last four World Cup semi-finals they have played in – two apiece in T20s and ODIs – after being battered by 10 wickets in Adelaide.

Dreadful, substandard, humiliating and dismal. One can’t be short of adjectives to describe India’s exit from the showpiece event. It’s not only about their defeat in ‘yet another knockout game’ but it’s about the way they lost the game. A 10-wicket defeat in any form of the game is just not acceptable. ‘Favourites’ India were cornered in a crunch game and the way Rohit Sharma’s men played, they certainly didn’t deserve to advance to the final.

3 reasons why India lost so badly to England

Credit where it’s due. The England batters won this game more than India lost it. Keeping all the emotions aside from another disappointing campaign for India, we look at the three major reasons behind India’s loss to England.

1. Poor start in the powerplay with bat and ball

Cricket News: 3 reasons why India were thrashed in semi-final vs England | Why did India lose so badly to England?
KL Rahul, like Rohit Sharma, had a disappointing tournament.

Be it bat or ball, the powerplay overs more often than not decide the outcome of the game. India’s loss can be pinpointed by how they fared in the opening six.

England hammered the Indian bowlers from ball one to reach 63/0 at the end of the powerplay. Despite possessing a formidable batting line-up on paper, India’s constant problem of not getting a quick start in the tournament came back to bite them again when they made just 38/1 in their opening phase.

Jos Buttler’s side has been known for playing an aggressive brand of cricket. England didn’t change anything and they went about their run chase in the same fashion.

On the other hand, India opted to play with the same old template of playing it safe at the start. Then, with the ball, India began by giving a flurry of boundaries and could never recover from the barrage they faced, eventually capitulating under pressure.

2. Questionable decision-making from Rohit Sharma

In the past editions of the World Cup, we’ve seen how big a role a captain can play in the success of their team. Daren Sammy, the most successful captain in the history of the T20 World Cup, didn’t do much as a player in the 2016 edition. But he was always switched on as a captain.

Rohit Sharma came in with a mandate to transform the T20I team. He has been a great tactical captain and five IPL trophies supports that statement. However, against a top side, when the occasion was big, Rohit failed to deliver with the bat and as a captain.

Post the defeat, Team India captain Rohit Sharma laid the blame on the bowlers by saying that they were not up to the mark with the ball and couldn’t turn up on the match day. His remarks were correct to some extent. However, that cannot hide Rohit’s mistakes as a captain. He was under tremendous pressure due to his shambolic performances with the bat throughout the tournament. His poor run of form continued in the semi-final as well.

But more than his batting, it was his clueless captaincy that was one of the reasons why India surrendered to England. When the England openers caught Rohit off guard by starting their onslaught right from the first ball, the Indian skipper went into a defensive shell.

2.1) Strange strategy to bring keeper up against Buttler:

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has Buttler’s number in T20Is, was getting some swing in the first over. However, he was asked to bowl at Buttler with the keeper standing up to the stumps, thus restricting his ability to do what he is known for. This was a strange move because Bhuvneshwar never tried this plan before and still he had dismissed Buttler five times in T20Is.

2.2) Arshdeep Singh not getting an extra over inside the first six overs:

India’s best bowler in the tournament, Arshdeep Singh, bowled the second over of the second innings. Like Bhuvneshwar, he got some swing with the new ball. Despite having an excellent record with the new ball, the left-arm pacer only bowled one over in the powerplay. It was a blunder not to give your best bowler another over especially when the opposition was on the attack.

2.3) Defensive Field placements:

After the first over, Rohit decided to place a fielder at a deep point position that allowed easy rotation of strike. The slip fielder was removed and that gave a signal to the opposition team that the team was on backfoot. He lacked the attacking mindset and that reflected in his decisions.

3. Reluctance to play Yuzvendra Chahal

Cricket News: Was looking forward to joining Ashwin & Chahal - Rassie van der Dussen | Rassie van der Dussen enjoying facing the spin twins at training
Yuzvendra Chahal had an excellent IPL 2022

Yuzvendra Chahal has inarguably been India’s best spinner in T20 cricket. His numbers reflect his success in the format. To everyone’s surprise, Chahal did not play a single game in the T20 World Cup. He was overlooked last year and despite being in the squad, he was ignored by the management.

Ironically, Chahal has featured more prominently for India in T20Is this year. So for him to be overlooked at the T20 World Cup remains a mystery. The fact that he persisted with more of a defensive option in Ravichandran Ashwin instead of an attacking leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal showed how conservative India was throughout the tournament.

Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone slowed things up for India in the middle overs. The question again arises that if Rashid and Livingstone could show their tricks on the pitch, then Chahal too could have been effective against the marauding opening pair of England, who toyed with the Indian attack.

The leg-spinner has a brilliant record against England, who have traditionally struggled to pick the multiple variations he has up his sleeve. Against England, Chahal has picked up 16 wickets in 11 T20Is at an impressive strike rate of 15.7 balls and an average of 21.12 runs per wicket.

Notably, Chahal has also recorded his T20 career’s best figures of (4-0-25-6) against them. In all fairness, not only against England, but India misses the services of their wicket-taker in the middle-over throughout the tournament.
