The T20 World Cup in Australia has entered its meaty stage with teams competing neck-to-neck to secure a place in the Semi Finals. All sides in group 1 have now played four matches, with the equations set for the final set of matches.

CricBlog took a detailed look at the qualification scenarios for each of the Group 2 teams. In this article, we will be doing the same for sides in Group 1 of the tournament.

T20 World Cup 2022: Group 1 Semi Finals Qualification Scenarios

1: New Zealand

Points: 5

NRR: +2.233

Remaining Match: Ireland

New Zealand’s loss to England means they must beat Ireland. Given their net run rate is very strong, victory by any margin will do.

If New Zealand lose to Ireland and Australia beat Afghanistan, the Black Caps will be eliminated as either England or Sri Lanka will also finish ahead.

2: England

Points: 5

NRR: +0.547

Remaining Match: Sri Lanka

England are now in pole position to reach the semi finals. Because Australia plays their final game on Friday before England on Saturday, Jos Buttler’s team will know exactly what they need to do to qualify. Given their net run rate is far superior to Australia’s, it is likely that victory by any margin against Sri Lanka will see them through.

3: Australia

Points: 5

NRR: -0.304

Remaining Match: Afghanistan

Australia have been playing catch up after the first up thrashing at the hands of New Zealand. They beat Sri Lanka and Ireland, but could have had greater net run rate boosts than what they ended up with.

Given their net run rate is worse than England’s, Australia must beat Afghanistan by a big margin and hope England either lose to Sri Lanka or beat them narrowly. For example, if Australia score 180 and bowl Afghanistan out for 120, Australia’s net run rate will move to +0.555, which will be higher than England’s 0.547. But, you feel that Australia will need an even bigger win than that to pressure England.

4: Sri Lanka

Points: 4

NRR: -0.457

Remaining Match: England

If Sri Lanka beats England, they will leapfrog Jos Buttler’s team. However, they will also need Afghanistan to beat Australia or Ireland to beat New Zealand so that either the Aussies or Kiwis remain on five.

5: Ireland

Points: 3

NRR: -1.304

Remaining Match: New Zealand

If Ireland beat New Zealand, they will finish on five points, level with the Black Caps. But, Ireland need Afghanistan to beat Australia. Also, Ireland’s net run rate is too far behind, which makes their hopes purely mathematical.

6: Afghanistan

Points: 2

NRR: -0.718

Remaining Match: Australia

The weather has been unkind to Afghanistan. Now, they are officially out after defeat to Sri Lanka. All they can do now is end Australia’s campaign with victory in Adelaide on Friday.

Well, well, well. How the tables turn. Bangladesh have often had the better of Zimbabwe across formats over the past 15 years, but 2022 is a different story.

Earlier this year, the Zimbabweans beat Bangladesh 2-1 in both T20Is and ODIs. Now, they have a shot at a remarkable Semi Finals appearance, while Bangladesh continue to struggle in this format. When these two teams meet in international cricket, it is low key outside of the two countries, but there will be plenty of attention on this clash as the stakes are through the roof with so much on the line.

In its first game of this T20 World Cup, the Gabba in Brisbane will welcome star all-rounders Sikandar Raza and Shakib Al Hasan. Also, the pace attacks of both teams have promised plenty, with Zimbabwe’s seamers proving their worth on bouncy pitches and Taskin Ahmed leading the way for the Tigers. However, batting will be key for both sides, with boundary-hitting coupled with good strike rotation high on the agenda.

BAN vs ZIM Possible Playing XI

Will Bangladesh stick with the same XI that got smashed by 104 runs against South Africa? They may look to bring Yasir Ali back for six-hitting potential.

Bangladesh: 1. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 2. Soumya Sarkar, 3. Litton Das, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Afif Hossain, 6. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 7. Mosaddek Hossain/Yasir Ali, 8. Nurul Hasan (wk), 9. Taskin Ahmed, 10. Mustafizur Rahman, 11. Hasan Mahmud

Other than injury or any other factor, Zimbabwe have no reason to change the team that won an all-time thriller against Pakistan.

Zimbabwe: 1. Craig Ervine (c), 2. Wessly Madhevere, 3. Milton Shumba, 4. Sean Williams, 5. Sikandar Raza, 6. Regis Chakabva (wk), 7. Ryan Burl, 8. Luke Jongwe, 9. Brad Evans, 10. Richard Ngarava, 11. Blessing Muzarabani

BAN vs ZIM Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Bangladesh:

  • The Tigers need a big contribution from Litton Das. The right-hander has scored 294 runs against Zimbabwe at an average of 42.00 and strike rate of 154.73. This includes three half-centuries in eight innings.
  • Soumya Sarkar also has good numbers against the Zimbabweans in T20Is: 10 inns, 298 runs, avg. 37.25, SR 134.23.
  • Shakib Al Hasan scored two fifties in the recent NZ Tri-Series, but is yet to fire in this World Cup. In 12 matches versus Zimbabwe, the star all-rounder has scored 233 runs at an average of 25.88 (SR 133.90), and has taken 16 wickets.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has taken the most wickets in BAN-ZIM T20Is (22) at an average of 14.72 and economy of 6.84. However, 15 of those have come in different conditions in Bangladesh.
  • Expect Taskin Ahmed to enjoy the pacy Gabba pitch. The seamer has taken five wickets in two matches so far, and will be keen to bounce back after a tough outing against South Africa.

Zimbabwe:

  • Sikandar Raza, of course. The star all-rounder’s outstanding year continued against Pakistan, where he turned the match with his 3/25. Earlier this year against Bangladesh, Sikandar scored two fifties in the three-match T20I series and two hundreds in the three-match ODI series.
  • Watch out for Wessly Madhevere. He looked in promising touch against Pakistan, and has some good numbers against Bangladesh: 8 inns, 230 runs, avg. 32.85, SR 127.07, three fifties.
  • Ryan Burl has enjoyed success against Bangladesh. He has smashed 213 runs in eight T20Is against them at an average of 53.25 and strike rate of 158.95. This includes 34 off 14 balls against Shakib Al Hasan without dismissal.
  • Blessing Muzarabani should enjoy the Gabba conditions. The tall seamer has taken seven wickets in four innings in this World Cup (SR 13.7), and has four wickets in three matches vs Bangladesh at an economy of just 5.66.
  • Richard Ngarava will test Bangladesh’s left-handers, as will Brad Evans, who bowled well to Mohammad Nawaz in the last game. Like Muzarabani, expect Ngarava and Evans to test Bangladesh with bounce given the long Gabba square boundaries.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 19, Bangladesh 12, Zimbabwe 7.
  • This will be the first T20I between these teams outside of Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.
  • Mosaddek Hossain took figures of 5/20 in Zimbabwe earlier this year. All five scalps came in the powerplay.
  • Sean Williams averages just 12.40 in 15 T20Is vs Bangladesh. Craig Ervine doesn’t far much better, with an average of 16.12 in eight T20Is.
  • Sikandar Raza has won three player of the match awards in this World Cup.

Gabba Brisbane Pitch Report and Weather

In what comes as a relief in this World Cup, the weather forecast for Brisbane is for a top of 31 degrees and mostly sunny conditions for this 1pm start (local time). This is quite the change for Zimbabwe as they have played their games in cold Hobart and chilly Perth so far. So, that will be a challenge to overcome.

The team batting first has won three of the four T20s at the Gabba this year, including Australia (178/7) by 31 runs against West Indies. The average first innings score in these matches is 165.25.

Group 2 will now head into its final round of matches, with a number of scenarios still possible. India and South Africa occupy the top two sports, while Pakistan and Bangladesh still have hope of qualifying to the 2022 T20 World Cup semi finals.

T20 World Cup Group 2 Semi Finals Qualification Scenarios

1: India

  • 6 points
  • NRR: +0.730
  • Remaining match: Zimbabwe

India’s six-run win over Bangladesh was vital. But, the job is not done yet. If South Africa beat Netherlands, India could be out of the top two before their game against Zimbabwe as either Pakistan or Bangladesh will move to six points given they play each other.

If Pakistan and South Africa win, and then India lose, Rohit Sharma’s team will be out given their inferior net run rate to Pakistan and lower points than South Africa’s seven. If India loses and Bangladesh beats Pakistan, the men in blue will very likely qualify on net run rate.

A win by any margin will see India top the group.

2: South Africa

  • 5 points
  • NRR: +1.441
  • Remaining match: Netherlands

Like India, a win by any margin for South Africa will be enough to see them through to the semi finals. Should they lose to Netherlands, however, they will be eliminated from the World Cup as either Bangladesh or Pakistan will overtake them.

3: Pakistan

  • Points: 4
  • NRR: +1.117
  • Remaining match: Bangladesh

Pakistan have picked up their game after losing their first two matches. They will qualify for the semi finals if:

  • They beat Bangladesh (by any margin)
  • India loses to Zimbabwe OR South Africa loses to Netherlands.

4: Bangladesh

  • 4 points
  • NRR: -1.276
  • Remaining match: Pakistan

Bangladesh’s poor net run rate of -1.276 means that they need to beat Pakistan and hope South Africa to lose to Netherlands.

5: Zimbabwe

  • 3 points
  • NRR: -0.313
  • Remaining match: India

Zimbabwe sit two points outside of the top two, but they can no longer qualify. Either Pakistan or Bangladesh will move to six points, and India are already on six. The most Zimbabwe can finish with is five.

6: Netherlands

  • Points: 2
  • NRR: -1.233
  • Remaining match: South Africa

Netherlands will be aiming to finish on a high by upsetting South Africa.

What went wrong for England in their T20 World Cup defeat to Ireland?

What went wrong for England in their T20 World Cup defeat to Ireland? | How did England lose to Ireland in the 2022 T20 World Cup?

England’s T20 World Cup hopes were dealt a surprising blow after falling to defeat against neighbours Ireland in Melbourne. England bowled out Ireland for 157 at the MCG, with both Liam Livingstone and Mark Wood taking three wickets apiece.

However, England stuttered in the first half of their innings, with Ireland taking full advantage of the damp, overcast conditions to remove big-hitters Jos Buttler and Alex Hales early on. By the time the rain arrived, England were five runs behind on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, handing a stunning win for the Irish.

Defeat means England are likely to require victories over Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand to advance out of Group 1. It explains why England have drifted to joint-second favourites to win Group 1, with LiveScore Bet pricing them at 5/2 alongside Australia after this Ireland loss.

Ireland got themselves off to a flying start. Although Stirling went for 14 in the third over, the second wicket partnership between skipper, Balbirnie, and Tucker provided the foundation for the Irish total. An 82-run partnership moved Ireland into three figures with eight overs remaining.

England did well at this point to take wickets with regularity, removing Tector, Balbirnie, Dockrell and Campher in quick succession to try and stem the run rate. It worked to a large extent, with Ireland’s last eight overs yielding just 54 runs.

England’s sluggish powerplay cost them dearly

At this stage, England and their supporters would have fancied themselves to see the game home at a run rate required of less than eight an over. However, skipper Jos Buttler could not have envisaged being caught out in the second ball of the England innings. The Irish were cock-a-hoop in the third over when Alex Hales also holed out, leaving England 14-2, with Ben Stokes exposed early on in the innings.

Stokes was bowled for just six, leaving Dawid Malan with the duty to take anchor and attempt to rebuild the run chase. There’s no doubt that the first ten overs of England’s innings is what proved their undoing, particularly with inclement weather in the vicinity of the MCG throughout the contest. Keeping up with the required run rate should have been a priority, but just eight boundaries were scored in the opening 87 deliveries.

Moeen Ali tried in vain to keep up with the run rate before rain stopped play

By the time Moeen Ali joined Malan at the crease, England were well behind the eight-ball. Despite Ali’s best efforts at bludgeoning runs, smashing 24 from 12 deliveries, England were five runs behind on the required run rate when Melbourne’s heavens opened. With only a ten-minute window for the rain to stop and for ground staff to make the wicket playable again, England’s prospects of victory looked very remote from the moment they stepped off the field of play. As the rain became harder, the umpires were forced to admit defeat and end proceedings, with Ireland winning by five runs.

The unpredictable Melbourne weather hung around the MCG for the next game, with the New Zealand vs Afghanistan contest a total washout.

For all of England’s misgivings – such as poor shot selections and general lack of composure – all the credit must go to the Irish team who put in the performance of their lives. Balbirnie acknowledged that the result was “emotional” given that the team had “never played a game of cricket here [in Melbourne]” before.

There were plenty of Irish spectators in the crowd that enjoyed the victory over their neighbours. It’s by no means the first time that Ireland has defeated England in a major competition. At the 2010/11 ICC World Cup, Ireland miraculously reached their 328 target with five balls to spare, thanks largely to 113 runs from middle-order batter Kevin O’Brien in just 63 balls.

This Irish team certainly channelled that spirit and fearless attitude to put England’s T20 World Cup hopes in the balance. Were England to go on and win a second T20 World Cup from here, they will have fully deserved it, beating all the best sides in the competition to merely advance to the knockout stages.

In some good news, the weather forecast in Sydney is absolutely perfect for this clash. So, there is no need to check rain radars, precipitation levels, forecasts and other weather features that have been quite prominent in this T20 World Cup so far.

The cricket itself has been enthralling. The last match was one of the all-time classics, and Sri Lanka will be seeking to put one on New Zealand as Dasun Shanaka’s team aims to keep their Semi Final hopes alive. Kane Williamson’s team, on the other hand, will finally line up, one week after their perfect display against Australia on this ground.

On paper, this looks to be a big test for Sri Lanka’s depleted attack, struck down by another injury in this tournament. Binura Fernando was the latest to suffer an unfortunate injury, as the Lions fought hard against Australia in Perth but were undone by Marcus Stoinis brilliance. New Zealand have a number of players who are capable of going big, so the challenge for the Sri Lankans will be to find early wickets and continue building pressure.

For New Zealand, a win here puts them on the brink of the Semi Finals thanks to their outstanding net run rate. Finn Allen and Devon Conway looks a magnificent opening partnership. Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips have more in their arsenal. Jimmy Neesham can strike the ball miles. And, that’s before we mention the New Zealand attack. When a World Cup comes around, New Zealand can never be counted out, and they proved why once again last week in their 89-run drubbing of Australia.

NZ vs SL Possible Playing XI

Daryl Mitchell could return in this match.

New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson, 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Daryl Mitchell/Mark Chapman, 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Ish Sodhi, 10. Trent Boult, 11. Lockie Ferguson

Sri Lanka’s injury woes continued against Australia. Left-armer Binura Fernando injured his hamstring. Asitha Fernando has been approved as his replacement.

Sri Lanka: 1. Pathum Nissanka, 2. Kusal Mendis (wk), 3. Dhanajaya de Silva, 4. Charith Asalanka, 5. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6. Dasun Shanaka (c), 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Chamika Karunaratne, 9. Maheeh Theekshana, 10. Lahiru Kumara, 11. Asitha Fernando

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

New Zealand:

  • Devon Conway is Mr. Consistent for New Zealand. He is coming off a magnificent 58-ball 92* against Australia, after scores of 36, 70*, 49*, 64 and 14 in his previous five matches.
  • Finn Allen represented the new Black Caps attitude down under. He belted 42 off 16 balls on this ground against Australia, part of an incredible career strike rate of 172.78 in 73 T20s.
  • Glenn Phillips has scored the most runs for New Zealand in T20Is in 2022: 13 inns, 461 runs, avg. 46.10, SR 152.64.
  • Mitchell Santner took figures of 3/31 on this ground against Australia. The likes of Axar Patel, Tim Pringle and South Africa’s spinners enjoyed bowling on the SCG track.
  • Santner has taken seven wickets in five T20Is against Sri Lanka at an average of 17.00 and economy of 6.26.
  • Expect Tim Southee (3/6 vs Australia) and Trent Boult (six wickets in three T20Is vs SL) to find some movement early.

Sri Lanka:

  • Kusal Mendis will be key. As opener in T20Is, he has smashed 778 runs in 25 innings at an average of 33.83 and strike rate of 145.69. In all other positions, Mendis has scored 234 runs at an average of 11.14 and strike rate of 97.90.
  • Pathum Nissanka in all T20Is in Australia: 9 inns, 321 runs, avg. 35.67, SR 108.81. He will be tasked with providing a platform up top.
  • Charith Asalanka has been in good form. The left-hander has made three 30+ scores in a row, including an impressive 38* off 25 against Australia at Perth.
  • Can Wanindu Hasaranga bounce back after a tough night against Australia? The legspinner still has the equal-most wickets in this World Cup, with nine scalps at an average of 15.66 and economy of 7.42.
  • Maheesh Theekshana will be tasked with keeping the NZ top order quiet. He is conceding just 6.16 per over in this tournament, with eight wickets to his name in five matches. He could enjoy the dryish SCG pitch.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 20, New Zealand 10, Sri Lanka 8, N/R 2.
  • This will be the first T20I between the teams since 2019.
  • Lahiru Kumara can test NZ with his pace. He has taken figures of 1/28 (4), 1/12 (2) and 0/22 (3.3) so far this tournament.

SCG Sydney Pitch Report and Weather

New Zealand and South Africa have both hit 200+ at the SCG. India struck 179/2. All three teams won after batting first. So, the captain who wins the toss may choose to put runs on the board.

As mentioned, the weather conditions will be perfect for this match, with clear skies and no rain forecast.

T20 World Cup 2022 Match 27: NZ vs SL Match Prediction – Who will win?

New Zealand look to have too much quality. The Black Caps will win.

BCCI announces same match fees for women and men

Cricket News: BCCI announces same match fee for female & male cricketers | BCCI announces women cricketers will receive same pay as men

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has declared that the country’s centrally-contracted female cricketers will earn the same match fees as their male counterparts according to the newly-devised pay parity policy.

Accordingly, the women cricketers will bag Rs 15 lakh (approx. US$18k), Rs 7 lakh (approx. US$8.5k) and Rs 3 lakh (approx. US$3.6k) for every Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20I appearance respectively. As of now, they earn Rs 1 lakh (approx. $1.2k) for each ODI and T20I and are paid Rs 2.5 lakh (approx. US$3k) for every Test match.

“I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers,” Shah tweeted from his official Twitter handle.

He added, “The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket.”

BCCI creating a roadmap for TV rights and franchise ownership for the Women’s IPL

Cricket News: BCCI announces same match fee for female & male cricketers | BCCI announces women cricketers will receive same pay as men
BCCI announces same match fees for women cricketers as the men: Legends Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami have inspired millions of women to play cricket.

However, no changes have been paid to the board’s annual retainers for female cricketers. As things stand, players slotted in Grades A, B and C are paid Rs 50 lakh (approx. US$60k), Rs 30 lakh (approx. US$36k) and Rs 10 lakh (approx. US$12k) respectively. On the other hand, the male players are categorised into Grade A+, A, B and C. They are given Rs 7 crore (approx. US$850k), Rs 5 crore (approx. US$607k), Rs 3 crore (approx. US$364k) and Rs 1 crore (approx. US$121k) respectively.

The BCCI has been holding talks with the nation’s topmost female cricketers over ringing in some alterations on this front as well. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has attended meetings over the same at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the board is also creating a roadmap for the TV rights and franchise ownership process for the first edition of the women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) that the BCCI officially confirmed after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) earlier this month. Discussions are also on-going over whether an auction or a draft process will be followed for the inaugural season of the league.

If the Melbourne weather allows for it, we could be in for a classic. Unlike the three-match T20I series these two teams contested earlier in the month, the stakes are high this time around, with both Australia and England desperate for a turnaround in fortunes.

The host nation are coming off a much-needed win after the New Zealand drubbing. However, as Mark Waugh put bluntly, Australia are not looking like champions at the moment, with a scratchy performance against Sri Lanka saved by a record half-century by Marcus Stoinis. Aaron Finch had a night to forget, and the pressure is growing on the bowling attack after letting positions of strength slip to end up needing to chase nearly 160.

But, the hope for Australia is that England are also under par. After crawling to a low total against Afghanistan, Jos Buttler’s team then faltered badly to lose to Ireland on this ground. Buttler himself will be keen to rediscover his form from the Australia series, while the spotlight shines brighter on Ben Stokes in the number four role. The bowling attack, led by the impressive Mark Wood and Sam Curran, looks in a good space, and the Aussies have shown a propensity to lose wickets quickly.

AUS vs ENG Possible Playing XI

Mark Waugh, along with various others, has called for Cameron Green’s inclusion over Pat Cummins. However, with the MCG surface offering assistance for pacers so far in this tournament, the Aussies may look to stick with Cummins.

Also, there may be the temptation to bring in Steve Smith, but who for is the big question. Plus, Adam Zampa could return after missing the last match due to COVID-19.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Tim David/Steve Smith, 7. Matthew Wade (wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa/Ashton Agar, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Chris Woakes had a very expensive outing against Ireland (0/41). He does have some good numbers against Australia’s key players, so England may look to stick with him.

England: 1. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 2. Alex Hales, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Harry Brook, 6. Moeen Ali, 7. Liam Livingstone, 8. Sam Curran, 9. Chris Woakes/David Willey, 10. Adil Rashid, 11. Mark Wood

AUS vs ENG Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Australia:

  • Australia is in need of runs from David Warner. The left-hander did recently hit a 73 against England, but he has a poor overall record against the arch-rivals: 14 inns, 295 runs, avg. 21.07, SR 118.00.
  • In 11 T20s at the MCG, Warner has struck 397 runs at an average of 44.11 and strike rate of 158.17. This includes five 30+ scores, comprising of two fifties and a century.
  • Glenn Maxwell has shown glimpses of his best form in this World Cup. He got off to a flyer against Sri Lanka, before Finch’s struggles at the other end halted his progress.
  • Maxwell has the most runs of any player at the MCG (1,345) at an average of 36.35 and strike rate of 146.83.
  • Marcus Stoinis is coming off the fastest T20I half-century for Australia. The all-rounder has the second-most runs at the MCG, with 968 at an average of 35.85 and strike rate of 136.92.
  • The spotlight is on Mitchell Starc. His battle with Jos Buttler could be key, given the England captain has been dismissed twice by left-arm seam in this tournament.
  • Adam Zampa has taken the most wickets at the MCG in T20s (41) at an average of 19.54 and economy of 6.84. Against England, however, Zampa concedes 10.23 per over in six T20Is (six wickets).

England:

  • Can Jos Buttler rediscover his best form? The captain smashed 150 runs in three innings at an average of 75.00 and strike rate of 174.41 against Australia earlier this month.
  • Overall against Australia, Buttler has scored 542 runs at an average of 45.16 and strike rate of 150.97.
  • Moeen Ali looked in good touch against Ireland on this ground (24* off 12 balls). England may look to bowl Moeen to David Warner.
  • Given Australia’s list of right-handers, expect Liam Livingstone to bowl. The all-rounder was excellent against Ireland (3/17), and he is a factor with the bat, too.
  • Sam Curran was the game-changer in the recent series against Australia. He took the most wickets (5), along with a crucial catch and run out. He dismissed finishers Matt Wade and Tim David, along with all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.
  • Aaron Finch was all at sea against the pace of Lahiru Kumara a couple of nights ago. So, expect England to use Mark Wood against the Aussie captain. The England pacer has taken an impressive 14 wickets in his last five T20Is.
  • England may play Chris Woakes for a couple of reasons. First, he has dismissed Maxwell twice in ten balls in T20Is, conceding just five in the process. Second, he has figures of 2/47 off 31 balls in all T20s against Warner.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 24, Australia 10, England 11, N/R 3.
  • England have won six of the past seven T20Is against Australia.
  • Mitchell Marsh in T20s at the MCG: 5 inns, 75 runs, avg. 15.00, SR 110.29.
  • Josh Hazlewood conceded 10.71 per over in two T20Is against England earlier this month. But, Hazlewood is enjoying a great couple of years, with 78 wickets in 51 matches at an average of 19 and economy of 7.55.
  • Dawid Malan recently hit a classy 82 in the series against Australia.
  • Adil Rashid has been short on wickets lately, but England could look to bowl him to Stoinis. In T20Is, Rashid has dismissed Stoinis three times in 31 balls for 42 runs.

MCG Melbourne Pitch Report and Weather

The MCG surface has been conducive to wonderful cricket, with both batsmen and bowlers benefitting at different stages. The chasing team has won eight of the last ten T20 Internationals at the MCG. In the last 11 T20s (including Big Bash), the average first innings score is 168.27.

Rain is likely to play spoilsport. But, the hope is there will be enough play for a result.

“It’s the nature of sport,” said Mpumelelo Mbangwa. And it’s why we love it. In another incredible game in this incredible World Cup edition, Zimbabwe defended 130 to upset Pakistan by one run in an all-time classic.

After the Zimbabweans collapsed from 95/3 to 95/7, it seemed that all hope was lost. However, the spark of hope began to flicker again when the Pakistan openers were dismissed cheaply in the powerplay. From that moment, Zimbabwe stayed in the game, with the magnificent Sikandar Raza producing one of the memorable T20 World Cup spells to dismantle the Pakistan middle order.

Such is Raza’s amazing form that Danny Morrison joked “I’m sick of seeing you here,” after he accepted yet another player of the match award. He held the award proudly soon after Zimbabwe pulled off an incredible win late on, with Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Wasim almost certain to have taken Pakistan home. The men in green needed just four off four balls after a few lusty blows, but when the tall Zimbabwe bowlers hit the deck, the Pakistanis couldn’t connect well enough.

Despite all the rain around Australia, this World Cup is showing up the UAE edition in 2021. No matter the toss result, the game result itself is often up in the air, making for a magnificent spectacle.

PAK vs ZIM Twitter reactions to a memorable match

Of course, Cricket Twitter went crazy. Here are some of the best reactions to another World Cup classic.

Should they win, they give themselves a real shot at qualifying for the Semi Finals with a match against the Netherlands still to come.

Rivals Afghanistan and Ireland go head-to-head in a crucial Group 1 clash, with a temporary spot in the top two up for grabs. Both teams know each other well, with the two nations contesting a competitive series in Ireland a couple of months ago, where the hosts prevailed 3-2 in a topsy-turvy series.

Unfortunately, the weather may be topsy-turvy again at the MCG. Rain is forecast for the afternoon in Melbourne, but the hope is that there will be enough of a breeze to allow for intervals of play and a result. If provided with the chance, Ireland will be seeking to build on their great victory against England, where their bowlers made inroads into the powerful English lineup. Also, Afghanistan also enjoyed some bowling success against Jos Buttler’s team, and they will be keen to take the field after their match against New Zealand was washed out.

AFG vs IRE Possible Playing XI

Afghanistan: 1. Hazratullah Zazai, 2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3. Ibrahim Zadran, 4. Usman Ghani, 5. Najibullah Zadran, 6. Mohammad Nabi (c), 7. Rashid Khan, 8. Azmatullah Omarzai, 9. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10. Naveen-ul-Haq/Fareed Ahmad, 11. Fazalhaq Farooqi

Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Andy Balbirnie (c), 3. Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4. Harry Tector, 5. George Dockrell, 6. Curtis Campher, 7. Gareth Delaney, 8. Fionn Hand, 9. Mark Adair, 10. Barry McCarthy, 11. Josh Little

  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck 108 runs at a strike rate of 140.25 in the same series. In all T20s this year, Gurbaz has smashed 945 runs at an average of 28.63 and strike rate of 157.41.
  • Ibrahim Zadran has made five consecutive 30+ scores in T20Is.

Melbourne’s weather is in the spotlight once again. October has been a horror month for Victorians, with Melbourne alone copping more than double its mean rainfall at this time of year.

After doubts were cast over the classic India vs Pakistan match last week, rain wreaked havoc for Wednesday’s matches. Ireland played superbly to beat England, with Duckworth/Lewis coming into the equation. The subsequent Afghanistan vs New Zealand clash was washed out.

Unfortunately, rain is set to feature again for Friday’s double header. In the first match, Afghanistan will take on Ireland. The second will see arch-rivals Australia and England go head-to-head.

MCG weather forecast for T20 World Cup: AFG vs IRE & AUS vs ENG

According to the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, there is a 90% chance of showers, with 4-6mm of rain expected to fall. It must be noted that Melbourne’s weather is very unpredictable, so less or more than the 4-6mm could actually end up falling.

The hope is that the windy conditions can help blow clouds over, allowing for intervals of play at least. Early northwesterly winds of 25 to 35km/h will turn into a westerly breeze of 25 to 40km/h in the middle of the day.

AccuWeather predicts an afternoon shower, with the chance of rain reducing sharply by the evening. According to its hourly forecast, the chance of precipitation will peak at 66% by 3-4pm. By the time the evening match between Australia and England begins (approx. 7pm), the chance of precipitation falls to 24%.

Hope that rain stays away for crucial games in Group 1

New Zealand currently lead the group with three points. England, Ireland, Sri Lanka and Australia are all level on two points. Afghanistan are on one and need to win. Friday’s matchday at the MCG could go a long way to deciding who will make the Semi Finals, with the cricket, rather than rain, hopefully the key factor in deciding the final positions.
