Why is Hasan Ali dropped from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad?

Cricket News: Why is Hasan Ali dropped from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad? | Hasan Ali dropped from Pakistan squads

Hasan Ali has been dropped from the Pakistan squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Netherlands as well as for the Asia Cup this month.

The 28-year-old has not been in the most encouraging run of form in recent times. He has taken two wickets in three ODIs at a bowling average and strike rate of 76.50 and 70 respectively in 2022. He has played only a single T20I this year but was in comparatively better touch in the format last year. In 18 T20Is, Hasan took 25 scalps at an impressive bowling strike rate of 14.32 in 2021.

However, the selectors probably took a better account of his current form through his performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier in 2022. He had taken nine wickets in nine games at a bowling average of 40.55 for Islamabad United.

His economy rate stood at 10.84 for the season and that has reflected in his rather lacklustre outings in international cricket this year as well.

Hasan Ali left out of squad: Needs a break for his own betterment – Mohammed Wasim

“We have done our homework, especially for the players who have served Pakistan well and have won so many games for the country. To give them a longer run is a part of the plan, but then there is the stage when you realise that now is the time, we think he needs a break for his own and the team’s betterment,” men’s chief selector Mohammed Wasim was quoted in a report by ESPNCricinfo.

He added, “So we had a similar thought process with Hasan Ali, to give him an extended run, but now we think he needs to regather himself and return as a match-winner. We hope going forward we will find the same old Hasan Ali.”

19-year-old Naseem Shah has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Hasan Ali. The teenage pace sensation has featured fairly regularly in the Test squad in recent times. He averages 36.30 with the ball along with two four-wicket hauls and a solitary five-wicket haul in 13 Test matches so far. However, Shah’s experience in limited-overs cricket is quite limited as of now.

In fact, he has played merely four List A games. In 45 T20s, Naseem has garnered 44 dismissals at an economy rate of 8.17 and a bowling strike rate of 21.9. The selectors are banking on the additional pace that he generates in the hope of that translating into a wicket-taking option in white-ball cricket.

“Naseem Shah is a quality bowler, and we have seen him in domestic white-ball cricket. He has got express pace and we wanted to include an attacking option; it is important to take wickets in white0ball cricket. He has that ability. He can swing the ball, he has got pace, and if we talk about his temperament, we have seen the evidence in Tests,” Wasim further spoke, as per the aforementioned publication.

“He was a good replacement for Hasan Ali, and we hope he can take his success from red-ball to white-ball cricket” he further quipped. Amongst the batsmen, Agar Salman and Mohammad Haris are the relatively new entrants in the ODI squad. The selected players will assemble in Lahore for a six-day training cap prior to leaving for the Netherlands on 12th August. The players included in the T20I setup will then fly to Dubai for the Asia Cup that is supposed to commence from 27th August onwards.

Yet again this summer, Ireland had a genuine shot at victory, only to fall short. The latest such instance was against the highly-rated South Africa team, with Lorcan Tucker (78 off 38) and George Dockrell (43 off 28) lifting hopes of a monumental run chase of 212.

In the end, Ireland’s plethora of short-pitched bowling and loss of five wickets inside their first ten overs was too much to come back from as they fell to their seventh-straight T20I defeat. Such a run of form can dampen confidence, but the key for Andy Balbirnie’s team is to build on the positives they showed as they made the Proteas sweat for a little while.

In terms of South Africa’s preparation for this year’s T20 World Cup, it was another efficient batting display. Even without the quality of Rilee Rossouw and David Miller, the Proteas smashed another big score, once again showcasing their excellent depth. A similar outing here, along with an improved bowling display, will do nicely.

IRE vs SA 2nd T20 Possible Playing XI

Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Andy Balbirnie (c), 3. Lorcan Tucker, 4. Harry Tector, 5. Gareth Delany, 6. George Dockrell, 7. Curtis Campher, 8. Mark Adair, 9. Andy McBrine, 10. Barry McCarthy/Graham Hume, 11. Josh Little

South Africa could look at some experimentation, particularly in the bowling department.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Reeza Hendricks, 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Aiden Markram, 5. Heinrich Klaasen/Rilee Rossouw/David Miller, 6. Tristan Stubbs, 7. Dwaine Pretorius, 8. Wayne Parnell, 9. Keshav Maharaj (c), 10. Gerald Coetzee/Lungi Ngidi, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi/Anrich Nortje

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Ireland:

  • Lorcan Tucker was outstanding in the opening T20I. His 78 off 38 balls gave the Irish hope of an incredible win.
  • Paul Stirling has made a few starts vs South Africa, without going big yet (61 runs in four innings, avg. 15.25, SR 122.00).
  • Harry Tector is searching to replicate his ODI record (895 runs, avg. 47.10) in T20Is (679 runs, avg. 24.25, SR 130.32). He smashed 66 off 34 against India earlier this year.
  • Mark Adair had a fruitless day in the first T20I (0/48 and 2). He shouldn’t be written off, as he recently scored 89 runs at an average of 44.50 and strike rate of 156.14 vs New Zealand. Also, he took five wickets in his previous three T20Is vs South Africa.
  • Josh Little will be looking to bounce back after going the distance against Aiden Markram. He has bowled well at the death recently, though, taking a total of ten wickets in his last four T20Is.

South Africa:

  • Reeza Hendricks has struck four consecutive half-centuries. Also, he has two half-centuries in as many matches against Ireland (143 runs, avg. 71.50, SR 141.58).
  • Aiden Markram continued his great year with an excellent half-century in the opening T20I (56 off 27 balls). That made it two fifties in his last T20Is.
  • Tristan Stubbs has smashed scores of 72 (28) and 24 (11) in two T20Is on this ground.
  • Keshav Maharaj dismissed Harry Tector and Curtis Campher in a solid spell in the first T20I (2/29).
  • Tabraiz Shamsi has taken 11 wickets in his last three T20Is. Also, he has taken nine wickets in just three matches against Ireland at an economy rate of 6.50 and strike rate of 8.0.
  • Wayne Parnell, if picked, will be called on to deliver in the powerplay. He dismissed both Ireland openers within the first six overs.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 4, Ireland 0, South Africa 4.
  • David Miller has smashed 139 runs in three matches vs Ireland at an average of 139.00 and strike rate of 169.51.
  • Andy Balbirnie is in need of runs. The Ireland skipper has scored just 46 runs in his past four T20Is.

County Ground Bristol Pitch Report and Weather

England smashed 234 and South Africa smashed 211 in the last two T20Is on this ground. The chasing teams then got close to 200 on both occasions. Expect more good batting conditions with clear weather forecast.

IRE vs SA 2nd T20 Match Prediction: Who will win

South Africa should win once again.

Suryakumar Yadav shoots up to 2nd in T20I batting rankings

Cricket News: Suryakumar Yadav shoots up to 2nd in T20I batting rankings | T20I Batting Rankings 2022: Suryakumar Yadav up to 2nd

Suryakumar Yadav has shot up to the second spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings following his 76-run knock in India’s third T20I vs West Indies. The Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman is merely two points behind (816) top-ranked Babar Azam’s current rating point of 818. With his form, there is a significant chance of the 31-year-old pipping the Pakistani skipper to the first spot after the remaining two games of the ongoing five-match series.

Suryakumar Yadav up to 2nd in the T20I rankings thanks to consistent form

Yadav debuted for India in February 2021 and has been a mainstay in the setup since then. He has already recorded five half-centuries and a century with an average of 38.12 and strike rate of 175.61 in 20 innings so far. The batsman has been promoted to the top of the order in the ongoing series and has made a formidable case in the absence of KL Rahul.

The batsman’s first major jump in the ICC rankings came after his blistering 117-run innings in the final T20I of India’s series against England last month. He moved from the 49th spot to the fifth-place post that match.

Now, the batsman has jumped past Mohammed Rizwan and Aiden Markram, who occupy the third and fourth spot in the standings currently. Dawid Malan has been placed fifth whereas Aaron Finch, Devon Conway, Pathum Nissanka, Nicholas Pooran and Martin Guptill make up for the next five rankings in the top 10. As of now, Babar is the only batsman placed amongst the top three spots in all three formats of international cricket.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood, Tabraiz Shamsi and Rashid Khan hold the first three spots in the ICC Men’s T20I Bowling Rankings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, placed seventh, is the only Indian in the top 10 rankings. Akeal Hosein’s fairly impressive performances have taken him three places up to the sixth spot. Adil Rashid, Adam Zampa, Wanindu Hasaranga, Anrich Nortje and Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana are the other occupants in the top 10 rankings.

If recent form is anything to go by, South Africa will win well. But, don’t tell Ireland that, who play another Full Member nation in an exciting season for them.

Nonetheless, they will have their work cut out. The Proteas are coming off an impressive 2-1 series win in England and are looking the goods, so much so that one wonders how regular captain Temba Bavuma finds his way back into this team. Importantly, there are contributions right the way down the batting order, with the form of Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs creating plenty of cause for excitement.

So, how do Ireland stop them? The home side did show glimpses of good form with the bat in recent assignments against India and New Zealand, but they will need more than glimpses here. Seamers Mark Adair and Josh Little must lead the way, with early wickets crucial to keep South Africa’s powerful lineup in check for as long as possible.

With a World Cup fast approaching, it is the perfect opportunity for the Irish to test themselves against opposition in great form. For the Proteas, it is about building further confidence against a team they swept 3-0 just over a year ago.

IRE vs SA 1st T20 Possible Playing XI

Graham Hume, who is a former South Africa U19 player, could debut today as Craig Young is out with a groin injury.

Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Andy Balbirnie (c), 3. Lorcan Tucker, 4. Harry Tector, 5. Gareth Delany, 6. George Dockrell, 7. Curtis Campher, 8. Mark Adair, 9. Barry McCarthy, 10. Graham Hume, 11. Josh Little

Kagiso Rabada is out of this two-match series with an ankle injury. So, Gerald Coetzee could be handed a debut or the Proteas may choose Marco Jansen.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Reeza Hendricks, 3. Rilee Rossouw, 4. Aiden Markram 5. Tristan Stubbs, 6. David Miller (c), 7. Andile Phehlukwayo/Dwaine Pretorius, 8. Keshav Maharaj, 9. Anrich Nortje/Marco Jansen, 10. Lungi Ngidi, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Ireland:

  • Watch out for Harry Tector. The impressive 22-year old scored 64 off 33 in a T20 against India earlier this season.
  • Also, he has 384 runs in 14 ODIs at 76.80, including a fifty vs SA. The key will be transferring this to T20Is after he averaged just 10 in three games vs New Zealand and 14.66 against South Africa last year.
  • Paul Stirling made starts against New Zealand recently without going on to make the big score. The experienced opener will be looking to improve on his 43 runs in three matches vs SA last year.
  • Mark Adair enjoyed a fruitful T20I series against the Black Caps. He was Ireland’s leading run-scorer in that series with 89 at an average of 44.50 and strike rate of 156.14. With the ball, he enjoyed some success against the Proteas, with five wickets in three matches last year at a strike rate of 14.4.
  • Josh Little took eight wickets in three matches against NZ last month (SR 9.0). Last year, he troubled both Rassie van der Dussen (two dismissals) and David Miller (one dismissal) en route to three wickets in two matches against the Proteas (2/27 and 1/42).

South Africa:

  • Reeza Hendricks had a dream series against England with three fifties at a strike rate of 156.52. Also, he struck 69 off 48 balls in his only T20I vs Ireland.
  • Rilee Rossouw has the second-best strike rate (182.12) of any player with at least 500 runs in T20s in 2022. He smashed 96 off 55 balls in the recent second T20I vs England.
  • Aiden Markram hit his strides immediately against England (51* off 36 balls) after a rest. Markram is also having a super year in T20s, having struck 381 runs at an average of 47.63 and strike rate of 139.05 in IPL 2022.
  • David Miller thumped 139 runs in three innings against Ireland last year. He was dismissed just once and struck at 169.51.
  • Tabraiz Shamsi blew England away with nine wickets in his last two matches. The left-arm wrist-spinner also tormented Ireland last year, taking seven wickets in just two matches at a strike rate of 6.8, including Stirling, Tector and Adair.
  • Lungi Ngidi is also coming off a fruitful series against England (seven wickets). Against Ireland, Ngidi has taken three wickets at an economy of just 4.26, including the wickets of Andy Balbirnie and George Dockrell.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Ireland and South Africa have met three times in T20Is. All were played last year; the Proteas won 3-0.
  • It was a tough series for Ireland with the bat. Skipper Andy Balbirnie was their leading run-scorer with just 55 at an average of 18.33 and strike rate of 122.22.
  • Tristan Stubbs smashed 72 off 28 balls vs England last week on this ground.
  • Since the start of their series in West Indies in June 2021, South Africa have won 17 of 23 completed T20Is.

County Ground Bristol Pitch Report and Weather

Short boundaries and a flat pitch makes for pristine batting conditions. England belted 234 in the first T20I of their South Africa series last week, with the Proteas replying with close to 200.

Showers are forecast in the morning at Bristol, but conditions should be fine for the match. This will be South Africa’s second T20I at the venue, whereas it will be Ireland’s first.

IRE vs SA 1st T20 Match Prediction: Who will win?

South Africa will win.

Will Ben Stokes lead England to a win in the Tests vs South Africa?

Cricket News: Will Ben Stokes lead England to a win in the Tests vs South Africa? | Will England beat South Africa in the Tests?

England has always been able to count on the undoubted quality that Ben Stokes possesses, both with the bat and ball. But, since his appointment as Test team captain in April, it’s become clear that as a leader, he has perhaps even more to offer to the national team’s cause.

After England’s disastrous 4-0 loss in the Ashes and their limp defeat in the West Indies, the summer visits of New Zealand, India, and South Africa will have seemed like something to fear.

Ben Stokes recently took a big decision to quit one-day international duties, and given the crowded nature of the cricketing calendar, it’s probably a wise move that the 31-year-old has taken.

That decision came with something of a warning from the skipper, who has rightly pointed out that players are not capable of meeting the demands of modern-day multi-format cricket as it currently stands.

“I will play my last game for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format.”

“This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way,”

“Three formats are just unsustainable for me now,”

“Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos (Buttler) and the rest of the team their all,” Stokes added.

Fresher Ben Stokes to lead England against South Africa

ODI’s loss should hopefully be Test cricket’s gain. The 50-over format of the game is seemingly the weak link in the chain right now, and Stokes has made the brave decision to move away from the one-day game. That should hold him in good stead for both the long-form and the highly popular T20 format.

Having helped England to a glorious run of four successive wins over New Zealand and India, Ben Stokes will now switch his focus to South Africa, and he knows that his team will have a tough time of it against the Proteas.

South Africa is also on a decent run of form, having eased past Bangladesh in two-match Test series in April. This followed a drawn series against New Zealand, which came after successive triumphs over West Indies and India.

The first Test starts on August 17th at Lords and will be followed by games at Old Trafford and The Oval. There will be a great deal of expectation weighing on the shoulders of the captain, but as history has proven before, Ben Stokes is more than capable of delivering the goods when England is in most need of him.

IND vs WI 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | IND vs WI 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | St Kitts Pitch Report

India will be meeting West Indies for the third T20I of their ongoing series in St. Kitts on Tuesday. The series is levelled 1-1 currently and both sides will be edging to get a foot ahead prior to the final two games.

The men from Caribbean secured a convincing victory courtesy of Obed McCoy and Brandon King in the second game and head into the coming match riding on a positive momentum altogether. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian side is on a formidable run of form currently and is likely to be undeterred with the last defeat. On the other hand, Nicholas Pooran’s men will be looking to clinch a consecutive victory and the series looks well-poised for a neck-to-neck contest currently.

IND v WI 3rd T20 Possible Playing XI

West Indies might not ring in many changes given that games are scheduled so close to each other.

West Indies: 1: Brandon King, 2: Kyle Mayers, 3: Nicholas Pooran (C), 4: Shimron Hetmyer, 5: Devon Thomas (wk), 6: Rovman Powell, 7: Odean Smith, 8: Jason Holder, 9: Akeal Hosein, 10: Alzarri Joseph, 11: Obed McCoy

A case could be made for the inclusion of either Ravi Bishnoi or Harshal Patel in place of Avesh Khan to add another dimension to the Indian bowling unit.

India: 1: Rohit Sharma, 2: Suryakumar Yadav, 3: Shreyas Iyer, 4: Rishabh Pant (wk), 5: Hardik Pandya, 6: Ravindra Jadeja, 7: Dinesh Karthik, 8: Ravichandran Ashwin, 9: Harshal Patel/Ravi Bishnoi, 10: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11: Arshdeep Singh

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

India:

  • Rohit Sharma has scored two half-centuries at an average and strike rate of 43.50 and 142.62 respectively in five T20I innings in the West Indies.
  • The Indian team is currently experimenting with Suryakumar Yadav in the opening position. He has a promising average and strike rate of 36.75 and 136.11 respectively in the 12 innings that he has opened in the IPL so far.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s wicket-taking abilities often goes for a toss against the West Indies. He has scalped only 11 dismissals in 16 T20Is against the two-time World T20 champions. Also, his role is more limited to the powerplay as India try out their death options.
  • Rishabh Pant has a rather middling record at number four in T20Is. In 24 innings, the southpaw has only recorded an average and strike rate of 17.95 and 124.42 respectively in this batting position. In stark contrast, he has scored 1740 runs at an average of 36.67 at a scoring rate of 147.71 in 52 IPL innings at number four.
  • Shreyas Iyer has an incredible overall T20I record of an average and strike rate of 32.45 and 137.12 including six half-centuries in 40 T20I innings. However, he has struck only 49 runs in six T20Is against the West Indies.

West Indies:

  • Nicholas Pooran has been in some stunning form in this calendar year. He has struck 488 runs at an average and strike rate of 48.80 and 135.56 in 13 T20Is in 2022.
  • Shimron Hetmyer has a curiously poor T20I record as compared to his exploits in franchise cricket. The 25-year-old has an average of merely 20.70 and a strike rate nearing 117 in 37 T20Is so far.
  • Jason Holder has sparked a turnaround in his bowling in T20Is in recent times. He has picked 29 wickets in 22 T20Is since the beginning of 2021. Holder has also picked three four-wicket hauls during this time period.
  • Akeal Hosein has been quite impressively efficient with respect to containing runs in his T20I career so far. The left-arm spinner has a career economy rate of 6.91 in 25 T20Is and can be used a potent option to neutralise Rohit and Suryakumar in the powerplay overs.
  • Obed McCoy has had a terrific start to his T20I career so far. He has taken 29 wickets in 18 games at a bowling average, strike rate and economy of 15.48, 12.41 and 7.48 respectively. This is particularly positive given that the pacer is usually tasked with bowling the tough overs towards the fag end of the innings.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Played 22, India 14, West Indies 7, No Result 1
  • The two sides had first faced in a T20I way back in 2009 at Lord’s during the T20 World Cup. Interestingly, Rohit had opened the innings for India in that game 13 years ago as well.
  • West Indies is usually regarded to be the superior T20I side between the two teams. However, India has emerged victorious in 12 of their last 15 T20Is against the Caribbean side.
  • Teams batting second have won nine of the 11 T20Is played at the Warner Park in St. Kitts.
  • The average first innings batting score in this ground across 11 T20Is is merely 121 runs.

Warner Park St Kitts Pitch Report and Weather

A slow and low wicket has generally been the norm in this ground. However, the trend suggests that tracks tend to get better for batting as the game progresses towards the second innings. Hence, the side that wins the toss might arguably prefer to have a ball first. A partly cloudy weather with the temperature ranging around 28 °C is expected during the course of the game.

IND vs WI 3rd T20 Match Prediction: Who will win?

The Indian batsmen are comparatively better-equipped to deal with slow and low wickets. They might have to alter from a gung-ho approach to put up a better performance with the bat in this game. They arguably do have a better bowling attack to pip West Indies in this game. Rohit’s men should possibly take a 2-1 lead in the series at the end of this match.

After a disappointing defeat in the first T20I, Bangladesh needed a saviour. Enter Mosaddek Hossain, whose incredible first spell blew Zimbabwe away on Sunday to set up a series decider today.

These two sides have played each other countless times over the past 15 years in particular, but a series decider in a T20 World Cup year can bring about a different kind of pressure that past performances don’t always dictate. The evidence is clear in the difference in Zimbabwe’s batting performances between games one and two, as both they and Bangladesh seek greater consistency.

Sikandar Raza played a contrasting yet effective knock in the second match, but it is almost impossible to win a T20 after losing five wickets in the powerplay. The Tigers will be looking for a similar display with the ball, as they will surely look to employ spin early once again.

BAN vs ZIM 3rd T20 Possible Playing 11

Zimbabwe may stick with the same team despite the defeat on Sunday.

Zimbabwe: 1. Regis Chakabva (wk), 2. Craig Ervine (c), 3. Wessly Madhevere, 4. Sean Williams, 5. Sikandar Raza, 6. Milton Shumba, 7. Ryan Burl, 8. Luke Jongwe, 9. Wellington Masakadza, 10. Richard Ngarava, 11.

Nurul Hasan is out with a fractured finger. Mahmudullah, who was originally rested from this series, has been called into the squad. Mosaddek Hossain will captain the team today.

Bangladesh: 1. Litton Das (wk), 2. Munim Shahriar, 3. Anamul Haque, 4. Afif Hosain, 5. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 6. Mahmudullah, 7. Mosaddek Hossain (c), 8. Mahedi Hasan, 9. Hasan Mahmud, 10. Mustafizur Rahman, 11. Shoriful Islam

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Zimbabwe:

  • Before this series, Sikandar Raza had scored just 95 runs against Bangladesh at an average of 7.91. In this series, he has struck 127 runs in two matches at a strike rate of 160.75.
  • Raza is carrying on from his brilliant T20 World Cup Qualifier campaign where he smashed 228 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 176.74.
  • It was a rare failure for Wessly Madhevere against Bangladesh on Sunday. The right-hander has scored three half-centuries in five home T20Is against the Tigers. Also, he has the most runs in T20Is at Harare: 11 inns, 364 runs, avg. 36.40, SR 128.62.
  • Time is running out for Regis Chakabva in T20Is. He usually performs the best in the third match of a T20I series (104 runs, avg. 26.00, SR 128.39). To paint a picture, he averages 18.00 in the first match of a series (9 inns) and 8.37 in the second (8 inns).
  • Ryan Burl put on an important 80-run stand with Sikandar Raza in the second T20I. He has scored 159 runs in just four innings vs Bangladesh at an average of 53.00 and strike rate of 150.00.
  • Zimbabwe used Luke Jongwe for just one over in the second T20I. Expect the home side to utilise Jongwe in the death overs as he has the most wickets of any bowler at Harare (22 wickets, SR 10.8).

Bangladesh:

  • Litton Das’ excellent record continued. The keeper-batsman hit a fluent 33-ball 56 on Sunday to take his T20I average and strike rate to 46.83 and 152.71 respectively against Zimbabwe.
  • Mahmudullah is set to return as a replacement for Nurul Hasan. It will be interesting to see if he can improve on a poor T20I record in Zimbabwe: 5 inns, 56 runs, avg. 11.20, SR 107.69.
  • Afif Hossain averages 31.20 batting at number four compared to 19.22 at five and 16.06 at six.
  • What a performance it was by Mosaddek Hossain in the second T20I. He took all five wickets in the powerplay. As he is the captain today, he should utilise himself upfront.
  • Also, expect Mahedi Hasan to have an impact in conditions that might aid spin. Although he went wicketless on Sunday, the off-spinner found turn and conceded just 10 runs.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has taken three wickets in two matches this series, without being at his best. Overall against Zimbabwe, the Fizz has 21 wickets to his name in 11 matches at a strike rate of 12.3.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 18, Zimbabwe 6, Bangladesh 12.
  • Zimbabwe have never won a T20I series against Bangladesh before.
  • Sean Williams recently hit two fifties in five innings in the Qualifier tournament. He looked good in the first T20I (33 off 19 balls) and will be looking to improve on his average of 13.14 in 14 T20Is vs Bangladesh.
  • Craig Ervine vs Bangladesh in T20Is: 7 inns, 105 runs, avg. 15.00, SR 83.33.
  • Bangladesh have lost 11 of their past 13 completed T20Is.

Harare Sports Club Pitch Report and Weather

Expect another good batting surface in this third T20I. However, there may be some assistance for the spinners once again given conditions have been dry.

The average first innings score in this series is 170, with Zimbabwe scoring a high 205 and low 135. The average score in the previous nine T20Is here was 155.2, and the team batting first has won seven of the past 11 T20Is on this ground.

Another clear day is forecast.

Tough to pick this result as both teams have played inconsistent cricket in this series. Bangladesh’s spin attack can deliver victory again, but a chase of 160+ for either side will be tough.

Best figures for West Indies in T20Is

Cricket News: Best figures for West Indies in T20Is | Who has the best figures for West Indies in T20Is?

West Indies levelled the ongoing T20I series vs India 1-1 on Monday in St. Kitts. Obed McCoy’s six-wicket haul reduced India to 138 in the first innings. The men from Caribbean managed to chase down the total irrespective of the game going down to the wire.

List of best figures for West Indies in T20 Internationals

McCoy produced a sublime spell and this provides CricBlog an ideal opportunity to explore the top five bowling performances by West Indian players in T20Is.

Obed McCoy: 6/17 vs India, 2022

Obed McCoy broke down the spine of the Indian batting line-up by dismissing openers Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in the opening three overs. However, his critical contribution came towards the fag end of the innings. India had staged a formidable comeback and looked fairly set to explode towards the end with 115/5 in 16.2 overs.

McCoy outsmarted Ravindra Jadeja first and then returned back to take three wickets in the 19th over including that of Dinesh Karthik. That ensured that India could score only 22 runs in the last 20 deliveries of the innings and even lost five wickets in that phase.

Keemo Paul: 5/15 vs Bangladesh, 2018

Keemo Paul delivered a fantastic spell of 5/15 in his quota of four overs in the decider to help West Indies clinch a 2-1 series victory vs Bangladesh in Mirpur in December 2018.

Evin Lewis’ 89 had powered the visitors to 190 runs in the first innings. However, Paul dismissed the likes of Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah to dismantle the Bangladeshi middle-order. He wiped away any hopes of a late comeback by sending back tailenders like Ariful Haque and Mohammed Saifuddin as well. More than the wickets, it was arguably Paul’s economical spell that further hampered Bangladesh’s chase.

Darren Sammy: 5/26 vs Zimbabwe, 2010

Zimbabwe had given West Indies a shock by winning the sole T20I between the two sides in February 2010. However, it was Darren Sammy’s five-wicket haul that stole the show before his side’s horrific batting outing. Zimbabwe were wiped out for 107 with seven of their batsmen getting dismissed for a duck.

Sammy dismissed the duo who put up some runs at least, namely: Hamilton Masakadza (44) and Elton Chigumbura (33). His other dismissals included the likes of Greg Lamb, Shingi Masakadza, and skipper Prosper Utseya. The fact that West Indies could put up only 79 runs at the loss of seven wickets in reply is a story for another day!

Jason Holder: 5/27 vs England, 2022

Jason Holder took a terrific five-wicket haul in merely 2.5 overs to enable West Indies seal a series victory in the decider fifth T20I vs England earlier this year. England’s 180-run chase was cut short by Holder’s timely dismissals of Moeen Ali in the 11th over. The all-rounder then returned to take a hat-trick in the 20th over to crush any hopes of an English revival.

He even topped that feat by taking a wicket on the fourth consecutive delivery of Saqib Mahmood. The target might have already slipped out of England’s radar by then but Holder’s feat helped the home team to properly stamp their authority over the series.

Oshane Thomas: 5/28 vs Sri Lanka, 2020

Oshane Thomas delivered a new-ball masterclass to roll over the Sri Lankan top-order in the opening T20I between the two sides in Pallekele a couple of years ago. Shehan Jayasuriya and Kusal Mendis were dismissed for a duck whereas Avishka Fernando was caught behind for seven in the second over. Thomas took the wickets of Angelo Matthews and Dasun Shanaka in the subsequent overs to round up his five-wicket haul in the powerplay itself.

Sri Lanka managed to mount a decent challenge nevertheless courtesy Kusal Perera (66) and Wanindu Hasaranga (44). However, Thomas’ effort was more than enough to take West Indies past the finishing line eventually.

India’s T20I batting revolution was on show again, with Dinesh Karthik making the strongest of cases to be selected in the T20 World Cup squad. With his side reduced to 138/6 with just four overs to go, Karthik, who continues to get better with age, provided another reminder of the importance of batting depth in this format.

Karthik’s 19-ball 41 included 26 off his final eight balls to get India to a big score of 190. The visitors’ new attitude is most exemplified in Rohit’s post-match statement that the odd failure is fine in such a style of play, but in saying that, there is still room for improvement, such as their execution against left-arm spin and Rishabh Pant’s form in T20Is.

However, West Indies are in need of far greater improvement. They were poor in their planning and execution, playing to India’s strengths on numerous occasions. One area is picking just spinner in conditions that often suit, with India’s spinners then taking five wickets between them. Also, after a promising start with the bat, West Indies lost wickets far too regularly, and that will be an area of focus today.

IND vs WI 2nd T20 Possible Playing 11

Expect West Indies to play another spinner. Also, Brandon King and Romario Shepherd are set to return after missing the first T20I due to US Visa requirements.

West Indies: 1. Kyle Mayers, 2. Brandon King, 3. Nicholas Pooran (c & wk), 4. Jason Holder, 5. Rovman Powell, 6. Shimron Hetmyer, 7. Romario Shepherd, 8. Akeal Hosein, 9. Keemo Paul/Hayden Walsh Jr, 10. Alzarri Joseph, 11. Obed McCoy

India picked three spinners in the first T20I, which meant Harshal Patel missed out. It remains to be seen if India persists with the three-spinner approach; in ten T20Is on this ground, pacers have taken 71 wickets at an average of 17.

Also, India may look to open with Rishabh Pant again.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Rishabh Pant (wk), 3. Shreyas Iyer/Deepak Hooda, 4. Suryakumar Yadav, 5. Hardik Pandya, 6. Dinesh Karthik, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. R Ashwin, 9. Ravi Bishnoi/Harshal Patel, 10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11. Arshdeep Singh

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

India:

  • Rohit Sharma started the T20I series with a classy 64 off 44 balls. West Indies bowled plenty of deliveries in his favoured short of a length, so it will be interesting to see how the Windies adjust.
  • Rohit has the most runs in IND-WI T20Is: 19 inns, 649 runs, avg. 40.56, SR 140.17.
  • Dinesh Karthik’s dream year continued. In all T20s this year, he has struck 468 runs at an average of 52.00 and strike rate of 178.62.
  • Suryakumar Yadav has a strike rate of 184.50 in four T20Is vs West Indies. He looked good against pace in the first T20I, but his issues against left-arm spin will be under the microscope.
  • Hardik Pandya had a quiet outing in the first T20I. However, he can fire at any moment. The all-rounder recently set a new Indian record and has scored 641 runs at an average of 45.79 and strike rate of 136.97 in T20s in 2022.
  • Ravi Bishnoi has taken five wickets in four T20Is against West Indies this year. He has conceded just 6.37 runs per over in the process.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s excellent form in the powerplay has continued. The seamer has taken four powerplay wickets in his last three T20Is. Overall in 2022, he has 25 scalps in 24 T20s at an economy of 7.28.

West Indies:

  • Nicholas Pooran hit three 50s in a row in India earlier this year. Also, he started in promising fashion in the first T20I of this series, before edging one through off Ashwin.
  • Pooran has batted 19 times in T20s on this ground for 403 runs at an average of 26.87 and strike rate of 142.20.
  • Rovman Powell missed out in the first T20I (14 off 17 balls). However, a key reason for that was the poor platform set by the top order. The right-hander has a good record vs India, still: 8 inns, 203 runs, avg. 33.83, SR 142.95.
  • Shimron Hetmyer has an average of 41.00 and strike rate of 149.77 in T20s this year. However, can he improve on his poor record on this ground? 15 inns, 256 runs, avg. 19.69, SR 112.28.
  • Romario Shepherd has an excellent record at St Kitts. He has taken 20 wickets in 12 T20s at a strike rate of 12.90 deliveries per wicket. He has also slammed 109 runs at a strike rate of 165.15.
  • Jason Holder had a tough outing in the first T20I (1/50 and 0). Also, in 20 T20s on this ground, he averages just 15.07 with the bat and 33.50 with the ball. But, he has the ability to improve on these numbers.
  • Expect the Windies to bowl Akeal Hosein to Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar has been dismissed 13 times for 302 runs against left-arm orthodox in T20s (avg. 23.23) at a strike rate of just 102.02.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 21, West Indies 6, India 14, 1 N/R.
  • India have won 12 of their past 13 T20Is against West Indies.
  • India have used seven openers in T20Is this year.
  • A number of the Windies batsmen have poor averages on this ground. Kyle Mayers averages 18.00 (11 inns), Rovman Powell 22.00 (18 inns), Jason Holder 15.07 (18 inns) and Shimron Hetmyer 19.69 (15 inns).
  • West Indies are conceding 11.71 runs per over at the death this year. This is the third-worst among Full Member teams behind South Africa and Bangladesh.

Warner Park St Kitts Basseterre Pitch Report and Weather

In 33 matches on this ground in CPL 2021, the average first innings score was 162.48. There was a mix of both lower and higher scores. Also, the team batting first won 17 times compared to 16 by the chasing team, so there wasn’t a clear trend.

Conditions are expected to be fine for this clash, with a top of about 30 degrees.

IND vs WI Match Prediction: Who will win?

India should win this match.

Does Temba Bavuma fit in South Africa’s best T20I XI?

Cricket News: Does Temba Bavuma fit in South Africa’s best T20I XI? | Is there room for Temba Bavuma in South Africa’s best T20I team?

South Africa cruised to an incredible T20I series victory against England at Southampton on Sunday. 0-1 down after the first game, the Proteas staged a terrific comeback to seal the series against their highly fancied opponents.

Inspired performances from Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Tristan Stubbs, and Aiden Markram have given the Proteas a problem of plenty in the run-up to the World T20 in Australia. An elbow injury to Temba Bavuma ruled the skipper out of this all-format tour to England. However, the side looked undeterred with his absence.

David Miller filled in ably as the captain and the team is visibly beaming with some terrific talent and potential to make up for Bavuma’s unavailability. Instead, it appears to have taken the water off their back given the continuous doubts over the captain’s suitability to the T20 format.

Where does Temba Bavuma fit in South Africa’s best T20I XI?

Bavuma took over as the limited-overs skipper amidst a leadership reshuffle in March 2021. However, it wasn’t as if he was a regular starter in T20Is prior to that. He featured in merely eight of the 19 T20Is that South Africa played between his debut in the format and his first game as a skipper in the same. Overall, he has played 25 of the 42 T20Is that the Proteas have featured in since his debut against India at Mohali in September 2019.

In fact, he was handed the T20 cap close to five years after his inaugural appearance for South Africa in Test cricket in December 2014. Bavuma has an average and strike rate of 26.76 and 120.60 in 24 T20Is. Five batsmen, namely: Quinton de Kock (993), Rassie van der Dussen (777), Reeza Hendricks (697), Aiden Markram (621), and David Miller (621) have scored more T20I runs for South Africa than (562) since his debut in the format.

All of them have done so with a comparatively better average, scoring rate, and with a greater number of boundaries. That is despite the fact that Bavuma has opened or batted at number three in 22 out of his 24 T20I innings so far, giving him a better opportunity to exploit the field restriction overs.

Bavuma’s average betters to 30.52 but his strike rate only stands at 124.67 even if one considers a larger sample size of his 100-match-long T20 career. Now, these are respectable numbers by all means but arguably inferior to other competitors looking to get a foot in the South African T20I XI.

A look at the key players to feature in South Africa’s best XI

Cricket News: Does Temba Bavuma fit in South Africa's best T20I XI? | Is there room for Temba Bavuma in South Africa's best T20I team?
Cricket News: Does Temba Bavuma fit in South Africa’s best T20I XI? – Rilee Rossouw has been excellent on return.

De Kock is a sure-shot starter in all circumstances and Hendricks returned with figures of 57, 53, and 70 as an opener in the last three T20Is vs England.

Rossouw put up an enthralling show of 96 runs off 55 deliveries in the second game and backed it up with a quickfire 31 in the final T20I. Markram re-asserted his prolificity with an authoritative 56 in the third game and Tristan Stubbs’ breath-taking 72 off 28 deliveries in the second T20I will definitely give him a longer run in the playing XI.

South Africa did not require any significant contributions from Miller and de Kock to win this series and that is a proper testament to their solid bench strength in the T20 format. Amidst all this, star batsman Rassie van der Dussen did not even feature in any of the three T20Is!

Where does this leave Temba Bavuma in South Africa’s mix of things for the T20 World Cup? Does he get a look-in primarily because of his captaincy credentials? Or, will the selectors opt for a final shake-up in order to realise their ICC tournament ambitions?

A clear picture will emerge as the team heads closer to the World T20 in the coming couple of months.
