Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will lock horns against each other in what promises to be a thrilling 33rd match of IPL 2025. Both sides have won two of the six games they’ve played, but MI is seventh in the points table due to a better net run rate. SRH is in the 9th position. This is an important game as both teams are playing catchup and can take crucial points off the other.

MI defeated the Delhi Capitals in a thriller of a game by 12 runs. Karn Sharma was the star for MI as he picked up three crucial wickets after DC got off to a flying start. The batters have done well but the form of Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks is a concern, and Hardik too needs to be consistent with the bat. 

Bowling-wise, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have struggled to do what was expected from them with the new ball. Jasprit Bumrah is easing back into things. But despite all this, MI have shown promising signs that they can put a winning streak together.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batters finally clicked after the first game. Abhishek Sharma (141 runs) scored a daddy hundred and helped his side chase down a massive total of 245 against PBKS. Travis Head (66 runs) also looked in good touch. These two are the key batters for SRH and their current form will be a big boost for the side.

However, it’s high time that Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy start performing. Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verma have been in good form in the middle. 

Bowling hasn’t been the strong suit for SRH. Mohammed Shami has gone for runs in almost every game now and Pat Cummins too has been expensive. Harshal Patel bowled well in the last game and Zeeshan Ansari has been impressive. SRH has added Smaran Ravichandran to their squad and they may play him straightaway in this game to further bolster their batting.

Just days after failing to defend 245 in Hyderabad, Punjab Kings (PBKS) successfully defended the lowest total in IPL history – 111, bundling Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) out for 95 for an unbelievable win.

A year ago, PBKS pulled off the highest successful chase against KKR. Quite the contrast.

You would have been forgiven for switching over to watch something else at the innings break when PBKS were bowled out so cheaply. You would have been forgiven even more at the end of the KKR powerplay, where they were sitting pretty at 56/2.

With Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi going solidly, KKR had sights on a big net run rate boost. In the blink of an eye, they were relying on Andre Russell just to get them the victory. Led superbly by Shreyas Iyer, PBKS kept at it, smelling more blood in the water as each KKR wicket fell.

KKR would no doubt be kicking themselves for throwing away two points, but PBKS are to be commended. They could have easily gone through the motions and put the blame on their disappointing batting performance. However, on a surface offering spin and some uneven bounce, PBKS knew that one wicket could bring a cluster.

“We actually said to the guys at the halfway mark really small chases like this are sometimes the hardest,” said PBKS coach Ricky Ponting after the match, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “The wicket wasn’t easy. You can see that right through the game was definitely holding up.”

Yuzvendra Chahal, who has had an under-par IPL to date by his lofty standards, was the star with the ball. His four wickets swung the game in PBKS’ favour. The legspinner had the ball on a string, turning it off the pitch after getting the ball to drop beautifully. Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh in particular were done by Chahal’s revolutions.

Incredibly, Chahal had to pass a fitness test on his shoulder to play. “He had a fitness test before the game today with his shoulder injury that he picked up in his last game and I grabbed him at the warm-up, looked him in the eye and said, ‘mate, are you OK?’ He said, ‘Coach, I’m 100% alright, let me out there,’ and what a spell of bowling,” said Ponting.

Reactions: PBKS defend 111, sparking great scenes in Mullanpur

Shreyas Iyer and Yuzvendra Chahal were the main subjects of praise from fans following an incredible victory. This kind of victory can define a season, and who knows how far PBKS can go. This could very well be their time.

“We just said that wins like this are always the sweetest one if we can pull this off, then this would be as good as a win most guys have probably been involved in. I’ve coached a lot of games in the IPL and that might just be about the best win that I’ve ever had.”

KKR were also criticised for their capitulation. They collapsed from 62/2 in the eighth over to 95 all-out in the 16th.

Sunrisers Hyderabad began their IPL 2025 season with a bang.  They posted a mammoth 286 for 6 in 20 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad in their opening match of the 2025 tournament. With that, they also became the first team to register a 200+ total in the 18th season of the league.

Opening the innings, Head provided SRH with a quickfire start by scoring 67 off 31 balls. Klaasen (34 off 14) and Nitish Reddy (30 off 15) broke the back of RR bowlers. England fast bowler Jofra Archer proved to be the most expensive, conceding 76 runs in his four overs whilst going wicketless.

Ishan Kishan emerged as the hero for SRH, who did not spare the Rajasthan Royals bowlers. The wicketkeeper-batter notched up an unbeaten 106 off 47 balls, hitting six sixes and 11 boundaries. It was also the maiden IPL century for Ishan, who also became the first SRH batter to score a century on his debut game for the franchise.

277 for 3 by Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad were a formidable force in the 2024 edition. Mumbai Indians bowlers were at their receiving end as they piled up 277 for 3 in 20 overs.

Head once again took the charge, smashing 62 off 24 balls. He was complemented by  another explosive hitter Abhishek Sharma, who took just 23 balls to blast 63, recording the fastest fifty for SRH. Klaasen was equally ruthless, hitting an unbeaten 80 off 34 balls to complete the SRH carnage.

272 for 7 by Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2024

Kolkata Knight Riders makes a rare appearance in the list dominated by SRH. KKR posted 272 for 7 against Delhi Capitals at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, which was then the second-highest team total in IPL history.

The colossal total was helped by half-centuries by Sunil Narine (85) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54). Phil Salt and Narine provided KKR with a sensational start, accumulating 60 runs in under five overs before Salt fell to Anrich Nortje.

Narine scored at a staggering strike rate of 217.95 as he formed a 104-run partnership with Raghuvanshi at a run rate of 13 per over. On form, it is easy to predict the 30th match of IPL 2025. However, this league can conjure up some surprises, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are desperately hoping for a turnaround in fortunes as their season hangs by a thread.

CSK are coming off one of their worst performances in recent memory, thrashed at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders after a timid, uninspiring batting performance. They lacked any intent and belief, crawling to 103/9 – a total that KKR ate up in just 61 deliveries.

The bottom-placed CSK now travel to Lucknow to play the in-form Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). LSG have surprised many this season given how depleted their bowling stocks looked. The batting has been outstanding, with Nicholas Pooran out of this world, along with excellent contributions from Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh.

LSG, currently in fourth, can move up to top spot at the halfway mark of their season.
