Cricket News: Viacom 18 buys media rights for first 5-year cycle of Women’s IPL | Women’s IPL: who won the media rights?

The media rights for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) has been won by Viacom 18 from 2023-27 for Rs 951 crore. The per match value for the league thus stands at Rs 7.09 crore as only two of the eight interested parties, namely Viacom and Disney Star showed up for the auction. The victorious bid included both those of linear TV and digitally and were sold off for the global audience.

“After pay equity, today’s bidding for media rights for Women’s IPL marks another historic mandate. It’s a big and decisive step for empowerment of women’s cricket in India, which will ensure participation of women from all ages. A new dawn indeed!” Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was quoted in a report by ESPN Cricinfo.

As of now, the league is expected to host 22 matches for the first three seasons. Post that based on the success of the preceding years, the board can look at adding a sixth franchise from 2026 onwards. Franchises part of the first women’s IPL will be garnering 80 per cent of the funds in the central commercial pool and media rights make up for a major chunk of the same.

The owners of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Gujarat Titans (GT), Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have submitted their bids for a side in the women’s IPL. The ownership rights for the sides will last for 10 years and 23rd January is the deadline day to submit technical bids for the teams.

The first edition of the women’s IPL is expected to run from 5-23 March. Each of the five teams will play each other twice in the league stages, which rounds off to 20 games. Then, there will be an eliminator between the second-placed and third-placed teams followed by the final between the table-toppers and the winner of the eliminator.

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will miss a major chunk of the cricketing action in 2023 as he recovers from the slew of injuries he suffered in a tragic car crash on 30th December.

Pant has torn all three of his important ligaments, i.e. the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). The PCL and the MCL have been reconstructed in the recent surgery but the ACL correction will happen only after three weeks.

These three ligaments are crucial for the movement of the body. The 25-year-old is hence staring at being sidelined for nearly six months, which puts his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup in threat. Though he was earlier being treated in Dehradun, Pant was airlifted to Mumbai by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to expedite his recovery.

Pant to miss at least six months of action in 2023

The doctors have not given a fixed timeline for Pant’s resumption of training but the BCCI has concluded that it will not happen within the next six months at least. This will result in the southpaw missing out on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well as the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

There are also chances of him sitting out of the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) provided India makes it to the summit clash in June.

Pant’s car crash happened in the early hours of 30th December as he was driving from Delhi to visit his family in Roorkee. He was rescued by a Haryana Roadways employee named Sushil Kumar along with his bus conductor Paramjeet. Three medial bulletins have come out from the BCCI since the day of the accident and one of them even informed that the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper has injured his right ankle as well.

The selection committee has named Ishan Kishan and KS Bharat as the two wicket-keepers for the upcoming series against Australia in Pant’s absence.

In January 2023, India won the third game of their One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka by 317 runs to set the record for the biggest victory by the margin of runs at Thirvananthpuram on Sunday. That record was nearly broken a mere five months later.

On that note, Cricblog takes a look at five of the most prominent wins by this criterion in the history of ODIs.

5: South Africa – 272 runs v Zimbabwe

Just a few months prior to the aforementioned Sri Lankan mauling, South Africa had handed a similar embarrassing defeat to the visiting Zimbabwean unit. Playing at Benoni, middle-order batsmen Jean-Paul Dumminy and Ab de Villiers hammered 129 and 109 runs respectively to help the Proteas get to 399 runs. Following that, their bowling unit put forth a collective impressive performance as Albie Morkel, Wayne Parnell and Johan Botha picked two wickets each along with Rusty Theron’s three scalps to bowl out Zimbabwe for merely 127 runs in 29 overs.

4: Australia – 275 runs v Afghanistan

Australia were relentless in their victorious campaign in the 2015 ODI World Cup. En route to the knockouts, they defeated Afghanistan by a whopping margin of 275 runs in one of the group stage matches.

David Warner scored 178 runs along with Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell’s valuable contributions of 95 and 88 runs respectively to take the Aussies to 417 runs. Mitchell Johnson picked a four-wicket haul coupled with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood’s two wickets each to round off the Afghan innings for merely 142 runs in 37.3 overs.

3: New Zealand – 290 runs v Ireland

The Kiwis had inflicted an ignominy on Ireland at Aberdeen in July 2008 as they defeated them by 290 runs. Openers James Marshall and Brendon McCullum scored 161 and 166 runs respectively as they put up an opening partnership of 274 runs in just 42.2 overs.

Then, Ross Taylor came in at number three to notch 59 off 24 deliveries to take New Zealand to 402 runs in 50 overs. They hit 128 runs in the last 46 deliveries and then the bowling attack came together to end the Irish innings for only 112 runs in 28.4 overs. Tim Southee and Michael Mason scalped three wickets each as Irish number 10 Peter Connell top-scored with 22 runs in a disappointing outing.

2: Zimbabwe – 304 runs v USA

Zimbabwe enjoyed a magnificent group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier. They won all four of their matches, including the big scalp of West Indies. They also dismantled USA by posting 408/6 – their first 400+ in ODIs – and then rolling them for just 104 to seal the second-biggest ever win in ODIs in terms of runs.

Sean Williams led the way with a superb 101-ball 174, with magnificent support from Sikandar Raza (48 off 27) and Ryan Burl (47 off 16). In response, USA had no response, falling to 44/5 at the ten-over mark courtesy of loose strokeplay and two horror run outs.

1: India – 317 runs v Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli’s return to form bodes well for team India as his 166 runs coupled with Shubman Gill’s 116 steered the team to 390 runs in the first innings. Lead Lankan bowlers Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara conceded 81 and 87 runs respectively in their 10 overs each as the home side were arguably flawless throughout their innings.

They doubled it up by bowling out Sri Lanka for 77 runs as Mohammed Siraj took four wickets and Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav took two scalps each to culminate an absolutely authoritative series win for the Indians.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the Test squad for the first two matches of India’s upcoming four-game series against Australia. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah misses out of the 17-member roster due to an injury to his right glute whereas Ravindra Jadeja’s participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is subject to his fitness as of now.

 Jaydev Unadkat is a part of India’s pace quartet that includes Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj alongside him. Rishabh Pant’s recent car accident and subsequent layoff sees Konas Bharat being named as the other wicket-keeper in the squad besides Kishan.

Surya, Kishan – Rewarded for limited-overs exploits?

The induction of Suryakumar and Kishan in the squad certainly adds tremendous firepower and dynamism to the Indian batting lineup. The two of them strike at 63.56 and 68.90 in their first-class careers respectively. But more importantly, they have been in sublime form in white-ball cricket recently.

Ever since debuting in February 2021, Suryakumar has averaged 46.81 with a strike rate of 180.34 in T20Is. He has notched three international centuries in the shortest format of the game and it was about time that his peerless caliber was put into use in red-ball format as well.

Similarly, Kishan broke the glass door down with his double century in India’s third ODI against Bangladesh last month. He might appear to be a like-to-like replacement to Pant but whether or not he manages to pip Bharat in the lineup remains to be seen as the latter has been a backup to the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper for a considerable period of time now.

Jadeja Returns?

Jadeja has been out of cricketing action since suffering a knee injury during the Asia Cup in August 2021. The 34-year-old instills incredible all-round value in the playing XI and the team management might be eagerly hoping for him to clear his fitness requirements to make it to the series. In case he doesn’t, Axar Patel has shown good form recently and could very well slot in for the Saurashtra superstar.
