List of biggest wins in ODIs (by runs)

Cricket News: List of biggest wins in ODIs (by runs) | What is the biggest win ever in One Day Internationals (ODIs)?

In January 2023, India won the third game of their One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka by 317 runs to set the record for the biggest victory by the margin of runs at Thirvananthpuram on Sunday. That record was nearly broken a mere five months later.

On that note, Cricblog takes a look at five of the most prominent wins by this criterion in the history of ODIs.

Biggest wins by runs in ODIs

5: South Africa – 272 runs v Zimbabwe

Just a few months prior to the aforementioned Sri Lankan mauling, South Africa had handed a similar embarrassing defeat to the visiting Zimbabwean unit. Playing at Benoni, middle-order batsmen Jean-Paul Dumminy and Ab de Villiers hammered 129 and 109 runs respectively to help the Proteas get to 399 runs. Following that, their bowling unit put forth a collective impressive performance as Albie Morkel, Wayne Parnell and Johan Botha picked two wickets each along with Rusty Theron’s three scalps to bowl out Zimbabwe for merely 127 runs in 29 overs.

4: Australia – 275 runs v Afghanistan

Australia were relentless in their victorious campaign in the 2015 ODI World Cup. En route to the knockouts, they defeated Afghanistan by a whopping margin of 275 runs in one of the group stage matches.

David Warner scored 178 runs along with Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell’s valuable contributions of 95 and 88 runs respectively to take the Aussies to 417 runs. Mitchell Johnson picked a four-wicket haul coupled with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood’s two wickets each to round off the Afghan innings for merely 142 runs in 37.3 overs.

3: New Zealand – 290 runs v Ireland

The Kiwis had inflicted an ignominy on Ireland at Aberdeen in July 2008 as they defeated them by 290 runs. Openers James Marshall and Brendon McCullum scored 161 and 166 runs respectively as they put up an opening partnership of 274 runs in just 42.2 overs.

Then, Ross Taylor came in at number three to notch 59 off 24 deliveries to take New Zealand to 402 runs in 50 overs. They hit 128 runs in the last 46 deliveries and then the bowling attack came together to end the Irish innings for only 112 runs in 28.4 overs. Tim Southee and Michael Mason scalped three wickets each as Irish number 10 Peter Connell top-scored with 22 runs in a disappointing outing.

2: Zimbabwe – 304 runs v USA

Zimbabwe enjoyed a magnificent group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier. They won all four of their matches, including the big scalp of West Indies. They also dismantled USA by posting 408/6 – their first 400+ in ODIs – and then rolling them for just 104 to seal the second-biggest ever win in ODIs in terms of runs.

Sean Williams led the way with a superb 101-ball 174, with magnificent support from Sikandar Raza (48 off 27) and Ryan Burl (47 off 16). In response, USA had no response, falling to 44/5 at the ten-over mark courtesy of loose strokeplay and two horror run outs.

1: India – 317 runs v Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli’s return to form bodes well for team India as his 166 runs coupled with Shubman Gill’s 116 steered the team to 390 runs in the first innings. Lead Lankan bowlers Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara conceded 81 and 87 runs respectively in their 10 overs each as the home side were arguably flawless throughout their innings.

They doubled it up by bowling out Sri Lanka for 77 runs as Mohammed Siraj took four wickets and Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav took two scalps each to culminate an absolutely authoritative series win for the Indians.

Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav headline India squad for Australia series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the Test squad for the first two matches of India’s upcoming four-game series against Australia. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah misses out of the 17-member roster due to an injury to his right glute whereas Ravindra Jadeja’s participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is subject to his fitness as of now.

Jaydev Unadkat is a part of India’s pace quartet that includes Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj alongside him. Rishabh Pant’s recent car accident and subsequent layoff sees Konas Bharat being named as the other wicket-keeper in the squad besides Kishan.

Surya, Kishan – Rewarded for limited-overs exploits?

The induction of Suryakumar and Kishan in the squad certainly adds tremendous firepower and dynamism to the Indian batting lineup. The two of them strike at 63.56 and 68.90 in their first-class careers respectively. But more importantly, they have been in sublime form in white-ball cricket recently.

Ever since debuting in February 2021, Suryakumar has averaged 46.81 with a strike rate of 180.34 in T20Is. He has notched three international centuries in the shortest format of the game and it was about time that his peerless caliber was put into use in red-ball format as well.

Similarly, Kishan broke the glass door down with his double century in India’s third ODI against Bangladesh last month. He might appear to be a like-to-like replacement to Pant but whether or not he manages to pip Bharat in the lineup remains to be seen as the latter has been a backup to the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper for a considerable period of time now.

Jadeja Returns?

Jadeja has been out of cricketing action since suffering a knee injury during the Asia Cup in August 2021. The 34-year-old instills incredible all-round value in the playing XI and the team management might be eagerly hoping for him to clear his fitness requirements to make it to the series. In case he doesn’t, Axar Patel has shown good form recently and could very well slot in for the Saurashtra superstar. Ravichandran Ashwin is very likely to take over the frontline spinner’s responsibility in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Pace Attack

The fast bowling unit will absolutely miss Bumrah’s domineering presence but his recent layoffs have perhaps acclimatized the team to deal without him. Shami and Umesh have been pillars for long and Siraj will perhaps supplement the duo as the third pacer in the playing XI.

India Squad –

Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (vc), Shubman Gill, C Pujara, V Kohli, S Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav

India Predicted Lineup –

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill/KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravindra Jadeja/Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj/Kuldeep Yadav

The wait is over. The highly anticipated SA20 is upon us, with a potential classic on offer right away.

Highly rated MI Cape Town, filled with domestic and overseas talent, will be seeking the perfect start to the tournament. With so many hard-hitting batting options and strong bowling resources on hand, the key for Rashid Khan’s team is nailing the combinations right away, particularly under pressure.

Given the talent also at Paarl Royals’ disposal, there is every chance that MICT could be placed under pressure throughout the contest. Jos Buttler had a dream 2022 including winning a T20 World Cup and reaching an IPL Final, while David Miller also had a year to remember. However, whether the bowling attack can keep the home side in check remains to be seen.

  • Will the talented Dewald Brevis find consistency? He hit a memorable 162 in the CSA T20 Challenge, but his tournament was also filled with a number of single digit scores. Overall, he struck at a magnificent 176.75.
  • Rassie van der Dussen has a terrific record at Newlands. In 13 matches, he has struck 464 runs at an average of 46.40 and strike rate of 127.17.
  • Sam Curran recently became the most expensive player in IPL history. He was player of the tournament in the 2022 T20 World Cup, and will be aiming to make an immediate impact.
  • Expect Rashid Khan to bowl himself early. He has an incredible record against Jos Buttler in T20s, with total figures of 4/31 in 49 balls.
  • Beuran Hendricks has taken the third-most wickets in T20s at Newlands (26) at an average of 18.62 and strike rate of just 12.92. In fact, this is the second-best strike rate of any bowler with at least 20 wickets at Cape Town.

Paarl Royals:

  • Jos Buttler in all T20s, 2022: 38 inns, 1,570 runs, avg. 46.18, SR 152.13.
  • In T20s in South Africa, Buttler has slammed 256 runs in eight innings at an average of 42.67 and strike rate of 148.95. This includes 106 runs in three matches at Cape Town at an average of 106.00 and strike rate of 129.27.

  • David Miller was the chase master in 2022. In 25 T20 innings batting second, Miller hit 709 runs at an average of 70.90 and strike rate of 149.26.
  • However, can Miller improve on a middling record at Newlands? The Paarl skipper has scored 347 runs in 17 matches at an average of 24.79 and strike rate of 122.61.
  • Lungi Ngidi is a genuine wicket-taker. At Newlands, he strikes every 19.14 deliveries, part of 82 wickets in 60 T20 innings in South Africa.
  • Tabraiz Shamsi at Cape Town: 9 inns, 10 wickets, avg. 27.30, SR 20.70.

  • Kagiso Rabada strikes every 26.67 balls in ten T20s at Newlands.

Newlands Cape Town Pitch Report and Weather

Expect a nice, fresh surface for this clash with some possible early assistance for the bowlers. All in all, however, it should be a good, true batting track.

The last three T20 Internationals on this ground has seen an average first innings score of 187.67. The chasing team won twice.

A clear and beautiful day is forecast, with a top of about 25 degrees.

STR vs REN Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: BBL 2022/23 Match 36 | AS vs MR Dream11 Prediction Today | Adelaide Pitch Report

As the race begins to heat up for the BBL 12 playoffs, an opportunity awaits Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades to consolidate their spot in the top five. Both sides are coming off morale-boosting victories – the Renegades over the Hurricanes thanks to a Sam Harper special, while record-breakers Strikers chased 230 in one of the great efforts in T20 history.

Now, the focus will be on which team deals better with key departures. One of Adelaide’s favourites Rashid Khan is off to the SA20, while the Renegades are without excellent spin duo Akeal Hosein and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Adelaide will overtake the Renegades into third place with a win here. Should the Renegades win, they take a big step towards a first playoffs’ appearance since 2019. Indeed, there is lots to play for.

BBL 2022/23 Match 36: STR vs REN Possible Playing XIs

Rashid Khan has departed for the SA20. Opener Henry Hunt has replaced him in the squad, and legspinner Cameron Boyce may take Rashid’s place in the XI.

Adelaide Strikers: 1. Matt Short (c), 2. Ryan Gibson, 3. Chris Lynn, 4. Adam Hose, 5. Colin de Grandhomme, 6. Thomas Kelly, 7. Harry Nielsen (wk), 8. Cameron Boyce, 9. Henry Thornton, 10. Wes Agar, 11. Harry Conway

English all-rounder and new Renegades signing Matt Critchley has been named in the squad. Sri Lankan legspinner Ruwantha Kellapotha is also included.

Akeal Hosein and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have completed their BBL 12 stint.

Melbourne Renegades: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Sam Harper (wk), 4. Aaron Finch (c), 5. Jonathan Wells, 6. Matt Critchley, 7. Will Sutherland, 8. Mackenzie Harvey/David Moody/Jack Prestwidge, 9. Tom Rogers, 10. Kane Richardson, 11. Ruwantha Kellapotha

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Adelaide Strikers:

  • Matt Short is coming off a miraculous unbeaten century in a record chase. The all-rounder has been outstanding at Adelaide Oval this season, with scores of 84, 65, 6 and 100*.
  • Short vs Renegades: 6 inns, 170 runs, avg. 34.00, SR 155.96.
  • Chris Lynn is having a terrific campaign. He is the leading run-scorer with 324 runs in eight matches at an average of 40.50 and strike rate of 140.86.
  • Lynn has hammered scores of 87 and 64 in his past two matches. In fact, the Strikers’ number three has hit a double figure score in every BBL 12 match.
  • Adam Hose has scored 56* (41) and 38 (22) in his last two matches at Adelaide Oval.
  • It’s a big game for Henry Thornton. The pacer has had a difficult last few games, with batsmen taking him on. He has gone wicketless just once in 15 BBL matches (total of 30 wickets).
  • Wes Agar has taken nine wickets in seven matches against Renegades at an average of 17.33 and economy of 7.15. He has total figures of 2/26 in 16 balls against Sam Harper and 1/21 in 16 balls against Aaron Finch.

Melbourne Renegades:

  • Sam Harper is coming off one of his best ever knocks (89 off 48 balls vs Hurricanes). He favours shots square of the wicket, so expect him to target the shorter side boundaries.
  • Against Strikers, Harper has scored 160 runs in eight matches at an average of 20.00 and strike rate of 107.38. Rashid Khan has dismissed him twice in 27 balls, so Harper will be glad Rashid is unavailable.
  • Aaron Finch has played just six matches for Renegades against Strikers since December 2011. He has hit 100 runs at an average of 16.67.
  • This season, Finch has scored 242 runs at an average of 34.57. At Adelaide, the Renegades captain has scored 338 runs at an average of 30.73 and strike rate of 133.60.
  • Legspinning all-rounder Matt Critchley scored 248 runs at a strike rate of 139.33 and took 15 wickets across 10 matches in the 2022 Vitality Blast.
  • Kane Richardson has a good record against Chris Lynn. He has dismissed him twice in 23 balls, conceding just 26 in the process.
  • Also, Richardson has taken 14 wickets in eight matches against Strikers since January 2018 (avg. 19.64, econ. 8.87).
  • Tom Rogers is now the top wicket-taker in BBL 12. The seamer has taken 17 wickets, including seven in his past two matches.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 16, Strikers 10, Renegades 6.
  • Strikers lead Renegades 5-4 at Adelaide Oval.
  • Henry Thornton has taken 15 wickets in seven matches at Adelaide (avg. 14.67, SR 10.40).
  • Cameron Boyce has historically struggled on this ground. In 12 matches, he has taken just five wickets at an average of 64.80 and strike rate of 44.80.
  • Tom Rogers has taken five wickets in 42 balls between overs 17 and 20 in this BBL. Also, he is conceding a respectable 9.71 per over at this stage.
  • Martin Guptill has made two 30+ scores in a row.

Adelaide Oval Pitch Report and Weather

A hot and clear day is forecast in Adelaide, with a top of about 31 degrees.

Expect another belter of a batting pitch. Last game, the Strikers chased down 230. In four matches so far this season, the average first innings score is 187.25. The team batting first and second have won two games each.

Details on all squad changes in BBL 2022/23

Cricket News: Details on all squad changes in BBL 2022/23 | Will the Australia Test players participate in BBL 12?

Multiple changes are being run amongst all franchises in the Big Bash League (BBL) as players are heading to the newly-formed SA20 as well as the ILT20. However, quite a few high-profile Australian internationals will be joining their sides as the competition is set to enter its business end now. Following are the given details.

BBL 12 squad changes: Will the Australia Test players participate?

Sydney Sixers

Ins: Steven Smith, Nathan Lyon

Outs: Chris Jordan, James Vince, Naveen ul Haq

Table-toppers Sydney Sixers will be losing their three key overseas players, namely Chris Jordan, James Vince and Naveen ul Haq to the ILT20. Vince will be leading the Gulf Giants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based league.

However, the duo of Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon will join the team right from their recently-concluded Test series against South Africa. Smith and Lyon will be adding tremendous pedigree to the side but the two of them have been out T20 action for a while and their adaptability to the format will be under scanner.

Perth Scorchers

Ins: Lance Morris, Ashton Agar

Outs: Faf du Plessis, Adam Lyth

Faf du Plessis will be flying to South Africa to captain the Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK) in the SA20. Pacer Lance Morris will be replacing fast bowler Jhye Richardson who has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Adam Lyth will represent the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 whereas Ashton Agar will join the Scorchers’ setup as well.

Melbourne Renegades

Ins: Marcus Harris

Outs: Mujeeb ur Rahman, Akeal Hosein

The Renegades will be stunned by the absence of their spin bowling duo of Mujeeb ur Rahman and Akeal Hosein – both of them who would be flying to the UAE to participate in the ILT20. However, opener Marcus Harris will join them and add further mettle to their batting firepower following Australia’s Test series against South Africa.

Sydney Thunder

Ins: David Warner

Outs: Alex Hales, Rilee Rossouw

The Thunder have a like-to-like replacement for the outgoing Alex Hales in the form of David Warner. However, their middle-order will lose some sheen with the departure of Rilee Rossouw. The South African batsman will be taking part in the SA20 whereas Hales will play in the ILT20.

Adelaide Strikers

Ins: Alex Carey, Travis Head

Outs: Chris Lynn, Rashid Khan

The Strikers will lose their two definite strikers like Chris Lynn and Rashid Khan to the ILT20 and the SA20 respectively. But, their domestic contingent will receive a stimulus by the incomings of Alex Carey and Travis Head. Whilst the batting department could very well make up for Lynn’s departure, the team will have to find a way to deal with Rashid’s departure too.

Hobart Hurricanes

Out: Shadab Khan

Pakistani all-rounder Shadab Khan had a fairly successful season until his injury hampered his further participation in the competition. However, the Hobart Hurricanes will not have any fresh new faces joining the roster.

Brisbane Heat

Ins: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne

Outs: Sam Billings, Colin Munro

Test specialists Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne – both of whom are in an imperious run of form presently, will join the Brisbane Heat now as Sam Billings and Colin Munro will be going to the UAE for their respective commitments in the ILT20.

Melbourne Stars

Out: Trent Boult

The bottom-placed Melbourne Stars will have to deal with further complications as bowling spearhead Trent Boult will now represent the MI Emirates in the ILT20. To make matters worse, the Stars do not have any new players joining them for the rest of the campaign.

HUR vs STA Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: BBL 2022/23 Match 35

HUR vs STA Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: BBL 2022/23 Match 35 | HH vs MS Dream11 Prediction Today | Hobart Pitch Report

It’s time for Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars to get going. Both teams have struggled for consistency so far in BBL 12, for differing reasons. The Hurricanes have not been able to stem the flow of runs, conceding some of the biggest totals in BBL history. The Stars, on the other hand, haven’t scored enough runs.

Which team will hold their nerve best in this crunch clash? It doesn’t get any easier as Hobart will be without Matthew Wade, while the Stars will have to cope without Marcus Stoinis in what looks to be a bigger blow on paper. So, the onus is on players who haven’t quite delivered consistently to produce in this crucial encounter.

Stars sit bottom. Hurricanes are sixth. With Adelaide Strikers set to welcome back Travis Head and Alex Carey, along with their much better net run rate of +0.925, there is very little room for error for these two sides.

Match Details

  • Location: Bellerive Oval, Hobart.
  • Time: 7:15pm (local), 1:45pm (IST).

BBL 2022/23 Match 35: HUR vs STA Possible Playing XIs

Hurricanes have named their squad. Matthew Wade will miss this match for personal reasons. Expect D’Arcy Short to return.

Chris Tremain is back in the squad and could play. Also, Paddy Dooley, who missed the last match with a finger injury, is also named.

Hobart Hurricanes: 1. Caleb Jewell, 2. Ben McDermott (wk), 3. Zak Crawley, 4. D’Arcy Short, 5. Tim David, 6. Asif Ali, 7. Faheem Ashraf, 8. Chris Tremain/Joel Paris, 9. Nathan Ellis (c), 10. Paddy Dooley, 11. Riley Meredith

Stars have also named their squad. Marcus Stoinis is out with a hamstring strain. The Stars could replace him with the in-form James Seymour, who hit 119* in Grade cricket.

Also, Trent Boult has completed his stint in BBL 12.

Melbourne Stars: 1. Joe Clarke (wk), 2. Tom Rogers, 3. Hilton Cartwright, 4. James Seymour, 5. Beau Webster, 6. Nick Larkin, 7. Campbell Kellaway, 8. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9. Luke Wood, 10. Liam Hatcher, 11. Adam Zampa (c)

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Hobart Hurricanes:

  • Ben McDermott is in good touch, with scores of 57, 53 and 28 in his past three matches. Against Stars, he has scored 412 runs at an average of 41.20 and strike rate of 133.77.
  • McDermott has scored 50 runs off 39 balls against Adam Zampa, without dismissal. He has also never been dismissed by Nathan Coulter-Nile (22 off 16).
  • Caleb Jewell will be tasked with providing the Hurricanes with another fast start. The left-hander has smashed 54 (28), 54 (25) and 28 (17) in his past three matches.
  • Between overs 0-5 this season, Jewell has smashed 100 off 64 balls without dismissal.
  • Tim David is also in good touch. He has belted 183 runs at an average of 36.60 and strike rate of 153.78 so far this season.
  • Riley Meredith has taken the most wickets in HUR-STA matches (15) at an average of 16.53 and economy of 7.19. He dismissed Beau Webster and Hilton Cartwright earlier this season.
  • Meredith also has the second-most wickets of any bowler at Bellerive Oval. He has taken 25 wickets in 18 matches, striking every 16.08 balls.
  • Hurricanes will be hoping the impressive Paddy Dooley is back fit and firing against a Stars side that has had its issues against spin in recent games. The spinner has taken 12 wickets in seven matches this season at an economy of 6.36 and strike rate of 12.5.

Melbourne Stars:

  • Joe Clarke struck a century against Hurricanes earlier this season. He has scored 28 off 21 against Riley Meredith and 21 off 16 against Nathan Ellis, both without dismissal.
  • Hilton Cartwright hit 35 off 31 balls in his last game, against Sixers. It may not seem great on paper, but he looked more comfortable in the number three role.
  • Beau Webster has hit four single digit scores in a row (0, 3, 8, 8). He has taken a wicket in each of his last three matches, but the Stars need him to stand up in the absence of Stoinis.
  • Since December 2019, Nathan Coulter-Nile has taken six wickets in four matches vs Hurricanes at an average of 12.50 and economy of 6.25.
  • Luke Wood kickstarted his BBL 12 campaign with 3/25 against Hurricanes. He dismissed Ben McDermott with a short delivery, as well as Tim David.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 18, Hurricanes 6, Stars 12.

Bellerive Oval Hobart Pitch Report and Weather

There is a small chance of showers in the evening in Hobart. However, it shouldn’t impact the game too much, if at all.

In the last game on this ground, Hurricanes chased down Strikers’ 177 with a mammoth 16 balls to spare on a beautiful batting track. Expect another good surface with minimal turn for the spinners with short, square boundaries.

The 12th season of the Big Bash League (BBL) has provided some cracking matches. This edition is now home to five of the top seven totals in the history of the competition, with half of the tournament still remaining.

Highest scores in BBL history

Adelaide Strikers pulled off a remarkable chase of 230 at home against Hobart Hurricanes. That effort is the highest successful run chase in 12 seasons of the BBL, surpassing the 223 by the Hurricanes themselves against Melbourne Renegades back in 2017.

But, where does the Strikers effort rank among the top totals? Here is a list of the top five highest totals in BBL history.

5. Sydney Thunder 228/6 vs Hobart Hurricanes, December 31, 2022

In the same season where Sydney Thunder were rolled for 15, they ammassed 228/6 against the Hobart Hurricanes on New Year’s Eve, 2022. Oliver Davies starred with 65 off 32 balls, while Alex Hales also fired with 77 off 45 balls.

4. Hobart Hurricanes 229/4 vs Adelaide Strikers, January 5, 2023

On paper, the Hurricanes have one of the best batting lineups in the 2022/23 season. Having made the decision to drop the out-of-form D’Arcy Short, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott and new recruit Zak Crawley all made half centuries to get to a total that is almost always a winning one.

4. Perth Scorchers 229/7 vs Melbourne Stars, December 23, 2022

Same season, another record score. Perth Scorchers belted 229/7 at Junction Oval, with Josh Inglis giving no Christmas gifts to the Stars’ bowlers. The keeper-batsman hammered 74 off 33 balls along with Faf du Plessis’ exhilarating 68 off 33.

3. Adelaide Strikers 230/3 vs Hobart Hurricanes, January 5, 2023

A night that will be remembered for years to come. Adelaide Strikers, coming off four straight defeats, chased 230 set by the Hurricanes. Matt Short further underlined his Australian credentials with a magnificent 100* off 59 balls, with his partnerships with Chris Lynn (64 off 29) and Adam Hose (38 off 22) crucial to the result.

2. Sydney Thunder 232/5 vs Sydney Sixers, January 22, 2021

Alex Hales belted 110 off 56 balls in a superb show of hitting. Callum Ferguson (43 off 23) and Ben Cutting (33 off 14) hit six sixes between them, but the night belonged to the talented England opener.

Sixers finished with a respectable 186 in reply, and were still soundly beaten by 46 runs.

1. Melbourne Stars 273/2 vs Hobart Hurricanes, January 29, 2022

A score that may not be beaten for a while. Led by 154* off 64 balls by Glenn Maxwell, the Stars ammassed a franchise T20 record score of 273 against a helpless Hurricanes attack where no bowler conceded less than ten an over.

Out of all scores in T20s, the Stars’ 273 is only behind 278 set by both Afghanistan (against Ireland) and Czech Republic (against Turkey).

It’s go time for the struggling Melbourne Stars. After a morale-boosting win in Adelaide on New Year’s Eve, they came crashing back down to earth with a heavy defeat to crosstown rivals Melbourne Renegades. In fact, they were travelling quite well in that game until Adam Zampa’s run out attempt fired Tom Rogers into his best form.

The Stars sit bottom of the league and it doesn’t get easier with Sydney Sixers in town. The men in magenta are almost always towards the top, and they have the chance to move to first place with victory here.

Earlier this season, the Sixers were too good for the Stars, chasing down the target of 151 with five balls to spare. Moises Henriques played his best knock of the season that night, so anything similar here will work nicely in a game they start as favourites in.

BBL 2022/23 Match 31: STA vs SIX Possible Playing XIs

Stars have named an unchanged squad for this match. It will be interesting to see whether they make any positional changes in a batting order that needs a boost.

Melbourne Stars: 1. Joe Clarke (wk), 2. Tom Rogers, 3. Beau Webster, 4. Marcus Stoinis, 5. Hilton Cartwright, 6. Nick Larkin, 7. Campbell Kellaway, 8. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9. Luke Wood, 10. Trent Boult, 11. Adam Zampa (c)

Sixers have also named their squad. They could stick with the same XI that took the field in the game against Brisbane Heat that was eventually washed out.

Sydney Sixers: 1. Josh Philippe (wk), 2. James Vince, 3. Daniel Hughes, 4. Moises Henriques (c), 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Dan Christian, 7. Hayden Kerr, 8. Ben Dwarshuis, 9. Sean Abbott, 10. Chris Jordan, 11. Steve O’Keefe

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Melbourne Stars:

  • Joe Clarke is key to the Stars’ hopes. He has hit a century at the MCG so far this season, and will be looking to bounce back after a golden duck in the last match.
  • Clarke made a start against the Sixers earlier in BBL 12 (27 off 22 balls).
  • Marcus Stoinis, who smashed 74 off 35 balls two games ago, has a score of 147 against Sixers at the MCG. He has a wonderful record against Chris Jordan in T20s (98 runs off 40 balls, no dismissal), so if Stoinis makes the death overs, watch out.
  • Beau Webster played beautifully against Sixers earlier this season. He struck 78 off 51 balls and took 1/24.
  • Hilton Cartwright vs Sydney Sixers since January 2020: 7 inns, 185 runs, avg. 37.00, SR 142.31.
  • Adam Zampa has taken 13 wickets in ten matches vs Sixers at an average of 20.31 and economy of 6.95. Also, he has the most wickets of any bowler at the MCG (45).
  • Luke Wood is the Stars’ leading wicket-taker in BBL 12. The left-armer has taken 13 wickets in seven matches, with seven of those scalps coming between overs 17 and 20.

Sydney Sixers:

  • Moises Henriques was player of the match against Stars earlier this season. The Sixers captain struck an unbeaten 52* off 32 balls.
  • Overall against Stars, Henrieuqes has hit 455 runs in 18 innings at an average of 30.33 and strike rate of 149.18.
  • Josh Philippe has similar averages against Stars (32.40) and at the MCG (32.20). He is the Sixers’ second-highest run-scorer against Stars with 324.
  • Jordan Silk has been dismissed just five times in 13 innings against Stars. Overall, he has hit 301 runs at an average of 60.20 and strike rate of 114.89.
  • Also, Silk enjoys batting at the MCG. In seven innings, he has hit four 30+ scores with a total of 235 runs at an average of 78.33 and strike rate of 125.67.
  • Hayden Kerr has taken at least one wicket in each of his last seven innings. This includes 2/26 vs Stars, where he dismissed Nick Larkin and Beau Webster.
  • Ben Dwarshuis has conceded 66 off 38 balls against Marcus Stoinis. However, he has dismissed him four times. If they meet, it promises to be an interesting battle.
  • The MCG pitch spun plenty a few nights ago. So, watch out for Steve O’Keefe who was outstanding at the small North Sydney Oval vs Brisbane Heat (3/26).
  • The left-arm spinner has taken 17 wickets in 15 matches against Stars at an average of 18.59 and economy of just 5.96. He has dismissed Joe Clarke twice in nine balls, conceding just three runs in the process.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: 19, Stars 7, Sixers 12.
  • Sixers lead Stars 5-4 at the MCG.
  • Trent Boult will be key against Josh Philippe. Since the start of 2021, Philippe has been dismissed 17 times for 160 runs in 145 balls against left-arm seam in T20s.
  • Steve O’Keefe in T20s at MCG: 9 inns, 6 wickets, avg. 31.17, econ. 6.03.
  • Ben Dwarshuis has the most wickets in Stars-Sixers matches (18) at an average of 22.72 and economy of 8.55.
  • Sean Abbott has taken 15 wickets in 11 matches at the MCG (SR 15.20). He also has 14 wickets in 12 matches vs Stars (avg. 22.93).
  • James Vince averages 23.22 in ten matches against Stars. Also, he averages just 19.38 in eight T20s at the MCG.

MCG Pitch Report and Weather

On January 3, the MCG surface offered assistance for the bowlers, including seam and plenty of turn. Seamer Tom Rogers took 5/16, while spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/7), Akeal Hosein (0/21) and Adam Zampa (1/18) were tough to get away with the ball spinning.

It remains to be seen if the pitch offers similar help. Given the weather has been warm and clear in Melbourne lately, there is a chance that it could be the case again.

Most centuries for Australia in Test cricket

Cricket News: Most centuries for Australia in Test cricket | List of most hundreds for Australia in Tests

Steve Smith has joined elite company. Australia, who have played Test cricket since 1887, have had four players notch up 30 Test hundreds. In the 2022 SCG Test against South Africa, Smith became the fourth, notching the milestone in just his 162nd innings.

Most centuries by an Australian in Tests

Here is a list of the top five most centuries by an Australian player in Tests.

5. Sir Donald Bradman, 29 hundreds

The greatest batsman to have ever played. Sir Donald Bradman struck an incredible 29 centuries in just 52 Tests at the famous average of 99.94.

Since his retirement in 1948, no player has come close to matching his average. The next highest among players with at least 1,000 runs is Adam Voges with 61.87. Among players to have scored more than Bradman’s 6,996 runs, Steve Smith’s 60.89 is next best.

4. Matthew Hayden, 30 hundreds

Matthew Hayden, Australia’s great opener, finished his 103-match career with 30 tons. Along with his attacking approach, his conversion rate was one of the key features of a gilttering career, hitting 30 tons out of 59 50+ scores.

3. Steve Smith, 32 hundreds

Australia’s prolific number four has an insatiable hunger for runs. By driving Anderson through the covers at Lord’s, Smith reached his 32nd hundred in just his 99th Test at an average in excess of 60.

2. Steve Waugh, 32 hundreds

One of the all-time greats. Waugh was a trailblaizer when it came to averaging 50+ in Test cricket, doing so throughout the 1990s which was a tough era for batting.

Perhaps his most impressive feat was his record against West Indies, who boasted greats including Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. He finished with 2,192 runs at an average of 49.82 against the men from the Caribbean.

1. Ricky Ponting, 41 hundreds

Ricky Ponting, who has the second-most Test runs in history (13,378), is the current holder of the most tons by an Australian. The last of his 41 centuries was a memorable 221 against India at the Adelaide Oval in 2012, one of eight tons against them.

He also hit eight against England and South Africa, which is the most he scored against any team.

Cricket Australia broadcast deal 2024-2030: Who won the rights & for how much?

Cricket News: Cricket Australia broadcast deal 2024-2030: Details, value | Value of Cricket Australia 2024 broadcast deal

The legal battle between Cricket Australia (CA) and Channel Seven will finally end with CA securing a seven-year deal that will reduce the Big Bash League (BBL) to a 43-game season.

The $AUS1.512 billion broadcast deal is expected to ensure that the BBL rounds off within the school holidays and will hence bring about greater availability of both Australian and overseas players for international outings.

The new agreement is also a major achievement for the outgoing executives including chair Lachlan Henderson as it guarantees that Australian cricket will continue to sail in safe waters from a financial perspective for the foreseeable future.

Cricket Australia & Seven committed to the game’s future – Lewis Martin

“There’s no doubt our relationship has been tested and there’s nothing left unsaid I can assure you. We’ve had our issues with Cricket Australia and we’ve reset. They were challenging times, no doubt about it. One of the key things that kept us constant was that we were united in both the love and for the ambition to grow the game. That was critical and that’s why we are all standing here today,” Lewis Martin, Seven’s head of network sport, was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.

As per the new deal, the white-ball matches of Australian men’s team will remain behind a paywall on Foxtel and Kayo. The Tests, along with all of Australian women’s team’s games, will be broadcast on Seven and Foxtel. A large chunk of the BBL along with the Tests will also be streamed on Kayo Sports and 7plus.

“We are delighted to be continuing our broadcast partnership with the Foxtel Group and Seven under an improved deal. The quality and reach of the Foxtel Group and Seven’s cricket production is first class and the outstanding service they provide cricket fans was a strong consideration in our decision to continue with this successful partnership,” Hockley was quoted by the aforementioned website.

Foxtel and Seven battled competition from the likes of Channel 10 owner Paramount and ex-cricket broadcaster Nine to sign on CA’s dotted lines.
