Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan said his side have no excuses for their five-run loss to India at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday. The skipper said that although conditions were challenging, they had a great opportunity to chase the revised target of 151.

The match was interrupted by rain with Bangladesh sitting pretty at 66/0 after seven overs chasing 185, led by Litton Das’ magnificent half-century. After the resumption, the Tigers lost 79/6 to eventually fall short by five runs. As a result, the crucial loss has left Bangladesh needing a miracle to qualify for the semi finals.

Wet outfield usually an advantage for the batting side – Shakib after loss to India

In the post-match press conference, Shakib confirmed he had no concerns with coming back out to play after showers swept through Adelaide. He said it was slippery, but bowling and fielding in such conditions is tougher.

“It was a little slippery given the amount of rain it [Adelaide Oval playing surface] had had,” said Shakib. “But normally that suits the batting side rather than the bowling side. We should not make that an excuse.”

“Nobody in our dressing room talked about fair or unfair. We wanted to play. We wanted to win. Everyone tried their best, but we came short.”

Shakib’s statement came as opinion was rife on Twitter about how the umpires may have been favouring India to allow play in such conditions. In one exchange, a journalist asked Shakib whether he could convince the umpires to stay off the field, given the Bangladesh captain was quite animated in his discussions.

“Did you really try not to play after the rain?”, asked the journalist. “Do we have any option?”, replied Shakib.

J: “No, that’s the reason. Did you try to convince them?”

S: “Convince whom?”

J: “Umpire and of course Rohit Sharma.”

S: “Do I have the ability to convince the umpire?”

J: “Then you were discussing something about the rivers of Bangladesh? Did you discuss something else about the rivers and their role in Bangladesh? What were you talking? Can you kindly explain?”

S: ” OK, now you are asking the right question. Umpire called both the captains and told us what’s the target, what’s the playing the rules, how many overs we’re playing, what will be the target.”

J: “That’s all, and you all accepted it?”

S: “Yes.”

India’s win puts them on the brink of the semi finals

Victory for India over Zimbabwe will confirm their passage to the semi finals. They may be confirmed as semi finalists before that, however, given they play the last match of the Super 12s.

For Bangladesh, they need Pakistan to beat South Africa today. Then, they must beat Pakistan and hope the Netherlands beat South Africa.

One of the greatest yearnings or you can say, fantasy of us human beings is to relive some of our glorious moments from the days gone by. This is especially true for public figures, who witness the benefits and downside of stardom to the hilt.

There is also a sense of pride attached to that sentiment. It’s not about proving yourself to others or to remind them of your talent. It’s more to do with proving to yourself that, ‘Yes, I still have it’

So, when it finally happens, they tend to lose their guard in the moment, showcasing their sensitive side in front of those, who once used to consider them immortal.

So, it did not come as a surprise when we witnessed an emotional Virat Kohli after he guided India to an improbable win in a thrill-a-minute cliffhanger against arch-rivals Pakistan in front of 90,000+ fans at the iconic MCG on that famous October 23 night.

As Kohli was completing the winning run, with his hands up in the air, flashbacks of what has been a pretty grim phase for the legendary cricketer may have run through his mind.

As he sank to his knees – like he did in Mohali 2016 – this time, to do a fist pump, you could just see what it meant to him. It was like the Virat of the past; a rebellious Virat who was hell-bent on proving his might in front of the world.

But, then, just like that, we saw a different version of Virat. A sensitive, mortal version of an isolated King, who had just regained his kingdom.

As his teammates engulfed him, Virat pointed to the air, thanking the almighty for paving way for him to rewind the clock back to his glory days.

He had visible tears in his eyes; something you could never imagine with a younger version of Kohli, who was unapologetic.

This version of Virat was almost thankful to God for bestowing him with the opportunity to rule his kingdom again.

Kohli regains his crown: His knock vs Pakistan was one of the best you’ll see.

Kohli regains the crown after some tough periods

This was not the first time that Virat had looked up towards the heavens this year. Six months ago, he was asking the almighty ‘Why me, God? Why me?’ after finding freak ways of getting out during a wretched IPL season.

On Sunday, he was again looking upstairs- this time- to thank God for giving him the opportunity to tune his skills to offensive level, as was evident when he smoked Haris Rauf straight over his head via what he has now been universally hailed as a ‘shot of an emperor’, and install the chasemaster chip in his brain as he went on to script an encore of Mohali 2016.

And , as Virat thanked the almighty, his detractors, the very same people who were calling for his head a few months ago, were bowing their heads down in respect.

364 days since he ‘lost’ the street, Virat made the MCG, in fact the whole cricketing world, dance to his beat as he regained his crown, fittingly against the arch-rivals at the colosseum of cricket.

Since then, Kohli has struck classy half-centuries against Netherlands and Bangladesh, going past Mahela Jayawardene as the highest run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups. With the form Virat is in, it feels like the beginning of something special once again, and it’s time to enjoy the ride.

Is it a full circle for Virat? Naah, it’s just a comma, and a second peak awaits. And, just as always, the world will be watching. It always is.

It’s India vs Bangladesh in a T20 World Cup. The last time that happened, we saw one of the most iconic matches in history, with India prevailing by one run when defeat seemed certain. Mushfiqur Rahim certainly believed so.

A lot was riding on that game, and a lot rides on this one. Had India lost that match in 2016, they would have missed the semi finals. Should they lose here, they risk missing the final four after a great start to the tournament. Also, Bangladesh can take a significant step towards an unexpected semi finals’ appearance themselves, with the Tigers also sitting on two victories.

However, do Bangladesh believe they can win? Shakib Al Hasan is hopeful, but he significantly downplayed his team’s chances. “As I said in Bangla before, India is the favourite team, they came here to win the World Cup. We’re not favourites, we didn’t come here to win the World Cup,” said Shakib. “We know very well that if we win against India, it will be called an upset. We will try to play our best cricket.”

The Bangladesh captain is right in that India have the better side on paper, but deep down the Tigers will give it their all. To do so, they need powerplay wickets to put the in-form Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav under pressure as early as possible. Also, whether their batting has enough firepower to dismantle India’s attack is a big question, but as this tournament has already shown, an upset is always waiting to happen.

IND vs BAN Possible Playing XI

Dinesh Karthik is in doubt after picking up an injury against South Africa. Rishabh Pant is likely to come in. Also, India may look to bring back Axar Patel for Deepak Hooda.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. KL Rahul, 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Suryakumar Yadav, 5. Hardik Pandya, 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Axar Patel, 8. R Ashwin, 9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10. Mohammed Shami, 11. Arshdeep Singh

Bangladesh may stick with the same XI that won against Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh: 1. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 2. Soumya Sarkar, 3. Litton Das, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Afif Hossain, 6. Mosaddek Hossain, 7. Nurul Hasan (wk), 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz/Yasir Ali, 9. Taskin Ahmed, 10. Hasan Mahmud, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

India:

  • Suryakumar Yadav continues to amaze. The right-hander struck 68 off 40 balls against South Africa in a game where everyone else scored 184 off 198.
  • Yadav has smashed 935 runs in T20Is in 2022 at an average of 42.50 and strike rate of 183.69.
  • Virat Kohli recently became the second player to reach 1,000 runs in men’s T20 World Cups. He achieved the feat in eight less innings than Jayawardene.
  • In four T20Is against Bangladesh, Kohli has scored 129 runs at an average of 64.50 and strike rate of 113.16.
  • Rohit Sharma has the most runs in BAN-IND T20Is. The skipper has struck 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 41.09 and strike rate of 144.41.
  • Arshdeep Singh has been magnificent in the powerplay in T20Is this year. He has taken 12 wickets at an average of 17.9 and strike rate of 14.5. Bangladesh have lost seven wickets in the powerplay stage across their three matches in this World Cup.
  • Expect Bhuvneshwar Kumar to find swing in overcast and cool Adelaide. He is India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is this year, with 35 wickets in 26 innings at an average of 17.54 and economy of 6.92.

Bangladesh:

  • Shakib Al Hasan will be crucial to Bangladesh’s hopes. The captain has a poor record against India, with just 62 runs in six matches at an average of 10.33 and strike rate of 106.90.
  • Najmul Hossain Shanto was the player who held things together against Zimbabwe (71 off 55 balls). Whether he can get through the powerplay against Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar will be a big question.
  • Litton Das is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in T20Is this year: 17 inns, 474 runs, avg. 27.88, SR 134.27.
  • Taskin Ahmed took figures of 4/25 vs Netherlands and 3/19 vs Zimbabwe. Can he deliver against India? He will be key upfront against the under-pressure KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.
  • Rohit Sharma has scored 145 runs off 147 balls against left-arm seam in all T20s this year, with five dismissals. Can Mustafizur Rahman tap into this opportunity?
  • Mustafizur in T20Is vs India: 8 inns, 4 wickets, avg. 64.00, econ. 8.63.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Matches 11, India 10, Bangladesh 1.
  • Rohit Sharma vs Mustafizur Rahman in all T20s: 51 balls, 86 runs, two dismissals.
  • KL Rahul is in need of runs. He is yet to make a double-figure score in the World Cup, after scores of 74 vs WA XI and 57 vs Australia in the warm ups.
  • Afif Hossain, despite batting at five, is Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in this World Cup with 68 (avg. 22.66, SR 133.33).

Adelaide Oval Pitch Report and Weather

There is a chance of showers throughout the day in Adelaide, but just 0-2mm is expected. So, there should hopefully be a full game.

In seven BBL matches at Adelaide in the 2021/22 season, the average first innings score was 159. The team batting first won four of those games.

The run rate at Adelaide Oval in all T20s over the past three years is 8.13. Pacers have conceded 8.28 per over, with fingerspin (7.53) and wristspin (7.44) proving more economical.

How many more thrillers can Zimbabwe players and fans handle? Has the great Pommie Mbangwa lost his voice yet? What does their game against Netherlands have in store for us?

Craig Ervine’s team is now in must-win territory after their heartbreaking three-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday. They can still qualify for the semi finals if they win this match and upset India on Sunday, but the focus needs to be squarely on performing well against a Dutch team looking for a win.

Indeed, this game will be a test for both batting lineups who have been under-par in recent games. The Netherlands have struggled with the bat right throughout the tournament, even crawling to small targets in the first round. Zimbabwe too have had their issues, with questions around their top order that their bowling attack is doing enough to cover for.

The first game of the 2022 T20 World Cup at Adelaide has the potential to be a nail-biter. Can the Dutch cope without the injured Bas de Leede? Who can step up in his absence? Can the Zimbabwe attack continue on their merry path, or will Paul van Meekeren be the star of the day?

ZIM vs NED Possible Playing XI

Zimbabwe may be tempted to bring in Wellington Masakadza as another spin option in Adelaide. However, Zimbabwe do have a number of spin options already.

Zimbabwe: 1. Craig Ervine (c), 2. Wessly Madhevere, 3. Milton Shumba, 4. Sean Williams, 5. Sikandar Raza, 6. Regis Chakabva (wk), 7. Ryan Burl, 8. Brad Evans, 9. Luke Jongwe/Tendai Chatara, 10. Richard Ngarava, 11. Blessing Muzarabani

Bas de Leede will very likely miss this game after suffering a nasty blow to the face from a Haris Rauf bouncer. Netherlands may bring Vikramjit Singh back into the XI or play a middle order player like Tim van der Gugten or Teja Nidamanuru.

Netherlands: 1. Max O’Dowd, 2. Vikramjit Singh, 3. Stephan Myburgh, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Roelof van der Merwe, 8. Tim Pringle, 9. Brandon Glover/Logan van Beek, 10. Paul van Meekeren, 11. Brandon Glover

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Zimbabwe:

  • Sikandar Raza blew the Dutch batting lineup away in the Final of the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament earlier this year. The spinner took 4/8, but the Bulawayo surface was a slower track than what is expected in Adelaide.
  • Raza has had a brilliant tournament to date. He has smashed 145 runs at a strike rate of 145.00. He also has nine wickets to his name, and will be sure to test a Netherlands side that has had its issues against spin.
  • Sean Williams played beautifully against Bangladesh (64 off 42 balls). He will be seeking to improve his record against Netherlands: 4 inns, 65 runs, avg. 16.25.
  • Craig Ervine vs Netherlands: 3 inns, 98 runs, avg. 32.67, SR 136.11.
  • Blessing Muzarabani has taken nine wickets in five innings in this T20 World Cup (avg. 14.00, SR 12). He is yet to play a T20I against Netherlands.
  • Richard Ngarava is conceding just 6.75 runs per over in this tournament. With the Dutch having lost their last 18 wickets for just 214 runs, Ngarava will be key in opening up the Netherlands’ batting lineup early.

Netherlands:

  • Max O’Dowd is Netherlands’ top run-scorer in this World Cup (161). Also, he has scored 98 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe at an average of 32.67 and strike rate of 136.11.
  • Colin Ackermann has provided solid resistance in recent games. He has struck scores of 62, 17 and 27 in the past three matches.
  • Skipper Scott Edwards has made three double-figure scores in his past four games, but has not gone past 21. Could this be the game where he sends himself to bat higher up the order?
  • Paul van Meekeren has been one of the stories of this World Cup. The seamer has taken seven wickets at an economy of just 5.66. Zimbabwe lost four wickets in the powerplay last game, and van Meekeren has conceded just 4.60 an over at this stage, along with three wickets.
  • Roelof van der Merwe for Netherlands against Zimbabwe: 2 matches, 87 runs, avg. 87.00, SR 177.55 & 5 wickets, avg. 11.20, econ. 7.00.
  • Brandon Glover has taken four wickets in two games against Zimbabwe at an average of 10.75 and economy of 5.38.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 4, Zimbabwe 3, Netherlands 1.
  • Earlier this year, Zimbabwe (132) beat Netherlands (95) in the Final of the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament. Sean Williams top-scored with 28.
  • Tom Cooper has been in awful form, and his numbers at Adelaide are poor: 15 inns, 222 runs, avg. 17.08, SR 116.84.

Adelaide Oval Pitch Report and Weather

There is a chance of showers in this game. According to bom.gov.au, there is a 60% possibility of rain in this match, with a total of 0-2mm expected. So, there should be enough play for a result.

In seven BBL matches at Adelaide in the 2021/22 season, the average first innings score was 159. The team batting first won four of those games.

Australian trio of skipper Aaron Finch along with middle-order swashbucklers Tim David and Marcus Stoinis are dealing with their respective injury concerns ahead of the defending champions’ upcoming group-stage encounter against Afghanistan at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

“I’ve had a bit of a hammy twinge, I don’t feel too bad at the moment but generally overnight it can stiffen up a bit. I will have a scan (on Tuesday),” Finch opened up on his hamstring issue in the aftermath of their 42-run victory against Ireland on Monday.

The 35-year-old scored 63 runs off 44 deliveries as he showed glimpses of regaining his touch with the bat in the aforementioned game.

However, David did not take the field whilst Australia’s bowling due to soreness in his hamstring. Marcus Stoinis, too, had to be taken off after rolling his arm for only one over. Stoinis’ series of side complaints is being attributed as a reason for the same, cricket365.com reports.

Finch – we must beat Afghanistan to stay alive in the tournament

Irrespective of these fitness issues, Australia recorded a much-needed convincing victory against the Irishmen at The Gabba. The injury-ridden duo of Finch and Stoinis top-scored with 63 and 35 respectively and Australia is now placed in second spot in the Group 1 standings.

They have five points to their name and their net run rate (NRR) is -0.304 currently. With England breathing down their neck, the eventual NRR is possibly going to be the distinguishing factor for the qualification prospects of teams in this group. Australia managed to do well on this front but pacer Mitchell Starc insisted that the side came away with their primary objective of winning this game in the first place.

“I guess you could look at that. I mean, first and foremost, we need to win these games, so we tick that box. For us it’s just trying to win these games because if you don’t win, it doesn’t matter, does it? We brought that run-rate back a bit, and we’ll see how we place in 24 hours,” he said, also speaking about England’s upcoming clash against Sri Lanka on Saturday.

As of now, Australia’s primary target will be to emerge victorious against Afghanistan on Friday. The impact of these injury concerns and the possible absenteeism of these players in that game will be closely scrutinized.

The schedule says it’s the 33rd match of the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, for England, it’s a virtual quarter final. A win over high-flying New Zealand puts them in pole position to qualify for the Semi Finals, given their net run rate is still superior to Australia’s. Indeed, Jos Buttler’s team are thankful to Lorcan Tucker for reducing the margin of Ireland’s defeat last night.

However, defeat to the Black Caps, which is a possibility given how good Kane Williamson’s team has been, leaves England needing Afghanistan to beat Australia later this week. To keep fate in their own hands, they must elevate the level of performance they have displayed so far this tournament, after struggling to a 113-run target against Afghanistan and then losing to Ireland.

The batting is under the spotlight. Early wickets has been an issue, and New Zealand have the form and bowlers to exploit this. But, the sheer talent and depth in England’s ranks means they can turn it on at any moment, and today could be the day. Also, it must be remembered that the Black Caps were reduced to 15/3 against Sri Lanka, so England’s bowlers will also be relishing the opportunity to make a mark.

The weather in Brisbane was poor in the morning, but should be all clear by the evening. This should be a cracker.

ENG vs NZ Possible Playing XI

England’s match against Australia was washed out. They may stick with the same team that lost narrowly on Duckworth-Lewis to Ireland.

England: 1. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 2. Alex Hales, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Harry Brook, 6. Moeen Ali, 7. Liam Livingstone, 8. Sam Curran, 9. Chris Woakes, 10. Mark Wood, 11. Adil Rashid

New Zealand have no reason to change their winning combination, unless they wish to bring in an extra pacer for the Gabba.

New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Daryl Mitchell, 6. James Neesham, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Ish Sodhi/Adam Milne, 10. Trent Boult, 11. Lockie Ferguson

ENG vs NZ Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

England:

  • Dawid Malan has struggled for rhythm in this tournament. Today could be his day, as he has great numbers against NZ: 7 inns, 361 runs, avg. 60.16, SR 154.93.
  • Also, Malan often performs in the third match of a series. In such matches, he has scored 517 runs in 13 innings at an average of 43.08 and strike rate of 149.85.
  • Jos Buttler has a strike rate of 149.63 in nine T20I innings vs New Zealand (avg. 34.16). The skipper will be aiming to rediscover the form he showed in the Australia series before the World Cup: 3 inns, 150 runs, avg. 75.00, SR 174.41.
  • Buttler has never been dismissed by Boult in all T20s (37 balls, 56 runs). He has never been dismissed by Southee in T20 Internationals (16 balls, 19 runs).
  • Given New Zealand have four right-handers in their top five, Liam Livingstone may bowl. The all-rounder was excellent against Ireland (3/17), and he is a factor with the bat, too.
  • Mark Wood has taken 14 wickets in his last five T20Is. In all T20s this year, Kane Williamson has been dismissed five times for 103 runs in 95 balls against right-arm pace. This is a matchup England may look to exploit.
  • Sam Curran has taken seven wickets in two matches so far in this tournament. This follows five wickets in two matches against Australia before the World Cup.

New Zealand:

  • Glenn Phillips is coming off a brilliant century against Sri Lanka (104). New Zealand’s number four is their top run-scorer this year, with 565 at an average of 51.36 and strike rate of 154.37.

Indian batsman Virat Kohli has lashed out at a breach of privacy in his hotel room in Perth, where the Indian team was staying during their preparatory camp prior to the commencement of the on-going T20 World Cup. ESPNcricinfo has reported that the invasion took place on 8th October.

Kohli opened up about the incident in a rather descriptive Instagram post made through his official account on 31st October, a day after India’s loss to South Africa in the same city on Sunday. The entire issue is about a video captioned ‘King Kohli’s Hotel Room’ that showcases the 33-year-old’s room in the Crown Towers hotel. It was uploaded on TikTok by an anonymous user. Kohli has certainly not taken the issue lightly.

“I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that. But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy,” Kohli wrote on his Instagram post.

He added, “If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment.”

Crown Towers, however, has apologized for the misdemeanor and the concerned individuals have been penalized by the hotel authorities.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has also expressed its disappointment at the aforementioned privacy invasion. The ICC has assured that it will continue to work in coordination with both security providers as well as event hotels “to ensure that this remains an isolated incident and player privacy is fully respected at all times,” as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The website has also reported that the Indian side didn’t take this issue up with either the ICC or the Cricket Australia (CA). However, they did report the same to the hotel authorities.

“Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again. We are also cooperating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation,” Crown Towers’ official statement read.

Hard to find a weakness in Suryakumar Yadav’s game: Fleming

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has said that it is difficult to find an area of weakness in Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 batting. The 32-year-old scored 68 runs off 40 deliveries though the Indian batting unit faltered for 133/9 in 20 overs in their group stage encounter against South Africa in Perth on Sunday.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Fleming explored the Mumbai Indians’ player’s batting technique in length and provided some detailed insights into the same.

Suryakumar has a very open and aggressive stance – Fleming

“He just has a really positive mindset. And he has a very open and aggressive stance which allows him to play a lot of unusual areas. So he’s sort of created a technique which bowlers are finding it hard to find the right lengths [against] because if they’re full he’ll hit all the way over cover or around; if they’re fractionally short he’ll go over third man and point,” the former New Zealand skipper was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Fleming added, “And anything straight, he’s very good with the short ball. So he’s developed a technique that’s very hard to find an area of weakness [in].”

In the same show, ex-South African skipper Faf du Plessis also explained that bowlers cannot really tie down Suryakumar in certain, specific areas as he can pull off shots in many different areas of the field. Faf hailed his calmness as he never appears to be rushed or frenetic despite having so many shots at his disposal.

“He knows when to pull that trigger, go through the gears, and he just always looks calm. He’s just a fantastic T20 player to watch. He’s the perfect guy that as a youngster you look at how you go through different gears at different stages of the game,” Faf further opened up on his thoughts on Suryakumar.

The batsman has been in a phenomenal touch since making debuting in T20Is in February 2021. In 37 matches, he has scored 1179 runs at an average and strike rate of 40.66 and 177.03 respectively with 11 half-centuries and a century to his name as well. He demonstrated some incredible dynamism in going about his innings in a testing track in Perth against an on-fire South African pace attack on Sunday.

Another day, another rain threat in an Afghanistan game. You have to go back to the opening night of the Super 12s for Afghanistan’s last match, with both their matches in Melbourne washed out without a ball bowled.

As Mohammad Nabi’s team moves north to Brisbane, the rain has unfortunately followed. Up to 15 to 30mm is forecast to fall in the city on Tuesday. However, the hope is that most – if not all – of the rain will fall in the morning, with more promising conditions expected in the afternoon. Indeed, Afghanistan will want to get on the field not only to try make a late run to the semi finals, but just to remind the world of what they are capable of.

Sri Lanka are also in a state where they would like to send a reminder of what they are capable of. After a promising start against New Zealand, Dasun Shanaka’s team were then blown away by Glenn Phillips and the Black Caps’ bowlers to eventually lose by 65 runs. The result has seen Sri Lanka’s net run rate fall to -0.890 after the big win against Ireland, with their campaign well and truly on life support.

India lost an important match against South Africa, but there is a silver lining. Virat Kohli missed out with the bat and dropped a simple, crucial chance against eventual half-centurion Aiden Markram, but there is a silver lining. With Virat, there is almost always a silver lining.

During the high-profile clash at Perth, Kohli became the second player to reach 1,000 runs in men’s T20 World Cups. He not only beat the record in terms of the number of innings, but smashed it, like he did when notching up 12,000 runs in ODIs.

Cricket News: Virat Kohli T20 World Cup stats: India great passes 1,000 runs | Virat Kohli has passed 1,000 runs in T20 World Cups

Virat Kohli T20 World Cup stats: The road to 1,000 runs

In addition to the number of innings, there are a number of incredible stats that highlight how prolific Kohli has been in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Fastest to 1,000 runs

Mahela Jayawardene reached 1,000 runs in Sri Lanka’s memorable triumph over India in the 2014 Final at Mirpur. The Sri Lankan great achieved the milestone in his 30th innings, underlying his status as one of the greats of the T20 World Cup.

Kohli went past Jayawardene’s record with an incredible eight innings to spare. With a trademark flick through midwicket, Kohli reached 1,000 runs in just his 22nd outing.

Average of 83.92

When Kohli reached the 1,000-run figure, he was averaging above 90. His dismissal brought the figure down, but it still sits at a remarkable 88.75 after his 64* vs Bangladesh and 26 vs Zimbabwe.

Among players with at least 700 runs in T20 World Cups, Kohli’s average is more than double the next best of 39.07 by Jayawardene and 34.66 by Rohit Sharma.

Average of 270.50 when chasing

If that wasn’t enough, Kohli’s prowess when chasing is unmatched. When batting second in T20 World Cups, Kohli has ammassed 541 runs at an average of 270.50 and strike rate of 135.9, with the 82 not outs against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022 right atop the list of all-time knocks in T20Is.

Also, every time Kohli finished unbeaten in a chase, India won the match.

50+ score in more than half of his knocks

Kohli has made 13 50+ scores in his 24 outings in T20 World Cups. This represents a 54.17% strike rate.

To paint a picture, Jayawardene made seven 50+ scores in 30 innings (23% strike rate). Chris Gayle, arguably the greatest T20 batsman of all time, made nine 50+ scores in 31 innings (29.03%). Indian teammate Rohit Sharma has made nine in 36 knocks (25%).

No dismissals in knockout matches

238 of Kohli’s T20 World Cup runs have come in knockout matches. He was not dismissed in any of the three matches, where he struck at 159.73.

In knockout matches (i.e. Semi Finals and Finals), Kohli has made scores of 72* off 44 balls (2014 SF vs South Africa), 77* off 58 balls (2014 Final vs Sri Lanka) and 89* off 47 balls (2016 SF vs West Indies).
