Asia Cup 2023 venue: India refuse to travel to Pakistan

Cricket News: Asia Cup 2023 venue: India refuse to travel to Pakistan | BCCI confirms India will not travel to Pakistan

Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has clarified that India will not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in 2023.

“It will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC (Asian Cricket Council) president. We can’t go there (Pakistan), they can’t come here. In the past too, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue,” Shah was quoted in a report by the Times of India (TOI).

The BCCI secretary further added, “Neutral venue for the Asia Cup is not unprecedented. We have decided that we will not travel to Pakistan.”

Asia Cup 2023 venue drama: Pakistan-India have not played a bilateral series since 2012

Meanwhile, TOI reports that sources known to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja have said that Pakistan is considering withdrawing from the ODI World Cup in 2023.

“The PCB is prepared to take hard decisions and play hard ball because it is also aware that the ICC and ACC events will have to face commercial liabilities and losses if Pakistan does not play India in these multi-team events,” a PCB source hit back at the BCCI, according to the aforementioned report.

Shah’s remark about both India and Pakistan not playing in each other’s lands raises further questions about the latter staging the Champions Trophy in 2025.

The neutral venue that the BCCI secretary referred to might as well be the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has hosted the last two editions of the Asia Cup in 2018 and 2022.

India has not toured Pakistan since 2008 and the two sides have not engaged in a bilateral series since late 2012. The countries will be facing off in their opening fixture of the T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

Our batting was unprofessional – West Indies coach Phil Simmons

Cricket News: Our batting was unprofessional – West Indies coach Phil Simmons | West Indies coach slams the state of West Indies’ batting

West Indies’ head coach Phil Simmons expressed disappointment at the team’s unprofessional batting display in the wake of their defeat to Scotland in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Monday. The men from Caribbean faltered for 118 whilst chasing 161 against the Scotsmen in Hobart. Simmons insisted that the bowling unit is putting the team in a positive position but the batsmen are letting them down regularly.

“I think the only world you can look for is ‘disappointed’. I think our batting – at least today – was definitely a bit unprofessional. We need to wake up and start being as professional as we can be, when we are batting. The bowlers seem to be working hard and putting us in good positions but the batters continue to falter,” Simmons explained, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Barring Kyle Mayers (20) and Jason Holder (36), none of the West Indian batsmen scored over 20 runs as the team slumped to a rather embarrassing collapse against the associate nation. Mark Watt struck thrice whereas Brad Wheal and Michael Leask picked up a couple of scalps each as the two-time World T20 Champions bundled out for 118 in the 19th over.

We need to calm down before preparing for Zimbabwe – Simmons

Simmons added that he needed to give some time to the dressing room to calm down before taking the prevalent issues up with them. The tactician bemoaned the increasing number of soft dismissals and reiterated that the batting unit needed to pay a lot of attention their wickets.

“I don’t know. I haven’t questioned the dressing room yet; let them calm down a little bit first. I need to calm down a little bit first before I go into the dressing room,” the head coach replied when asked about what went wrong in the chase.

He added, “There were too many soft dismissals. As batsmen, you have to pay a lot more attention to your wicket. Every time we play, we are up there with the run rate; it doesn’t matter who we are playing against. But we keep losing wickets – and soft wickets. I think that’s what we have been trying to remediate for the last couple of months. [It] doesn’t seem like it’s there yet.”

West Indies were well-placed at 53/2 in the sixth over of the chase. However, they ended up losing six wickets in the middle phase between the overs 7-16 and that triggered this collapse.

There was some criticism over the West Indies’ batting order with the likes of Jason Holder and Odean Smith batting as low as at number seven and number 10 respectively. However, Simmons warded off that as one of the reasons that caused this defeat. Instead, he mentioned that player have to make an impact if they are sent higher up the order and that it couldn’t be used as an excuse for this loss.

“Well, I don’t think so,” he said. “People need to be able to go up and make a difference. Sometimes a batsman goes up and he has to propel his side with ten balls, 15 off 10 balls and so on. Guys have to bat in different positions. Today there was no real different positions,” Simmons opened up on his thought process.

He further added, “I think guys were batting where they are strong. We talk about looking at data, looking at different things. But guys are batting where they are strong. I don’t think that can be used as an excuse.” West Indies will next face Zimbabwe at the same venue on Wednesday as they look to secure a desperate victory to sustain their prospects of qualifying for the Super 12 stage of the tournament.

T20 World Cup 2022 Group A qualification scenarios

T20 World Cup 2022 Group A qualification scenarios | What are the qualification scenarios for Group A of the T20 World Cup?

The 2022 T20 World Cup has already delivered some memorable moments. Group A has been one to savour, with Namibia’s upset of Sri Lanka the highlight, along with a magnificent hat-trick for UAE legspinner Karthik Meiyappan against the Asia Cup champions.

With all teams having played two matches, the question of which two teams will qualify to the Super 12s remains up in the air. Let’s have a look at some of the scenarios ahead of the final Group A matchday on Thursday.

Group A Qualification Scenarios: Who will qualify for the Super 12s?

1. Netherlands

  • 4 points
  • NRR: +0.149
  • Final match: Sri Lanka

Netherlands moved to first place after a crucial, tight win over Namibia in a thriller on Tuesday. They pulled off a very similar run chase two days earlier against UAE, reaching the modest target of 112 in the 20th over.

The Dutch have bowled beautifully, and have held their nerve in key moments. However, while they sit pretty at the top, their qualification is far from guaranteed. Sri Lanka, after their dominant win over UAE, now have a better net run rate than Scott Edwards’ team. So, a defeat by any margin against Sri Lanka will leave the Dutch relying on UAE to beat Namibia.

If they win, they will top the group and move to Group 1 that currently features Australia, New Zealand, England and Afghanistan.

2. Namibia

  • 2 points
  • NRR: +1.277
  • Final match: UAE

It was a heartbreaking defeat for Namibia against Netherlands, especially considering David Wiese and JJ Smit batted just nine balls between them. Despite the loss, the Gerhard Erasmus’ team is still well-placed to qualify thanks to their strong net run rate. In fact, the equation is simple: beat UAE by any margin.

Sri Lanka and Netherlands play in the earlier game. If both Sri Lanka and Namibia win, both nations will go through on net run rate given they are already superior to the Netherlands’ +0.149. Who finishes first or second depends on the net run rate, too. If Netherlands and Namibia win, Sri Lanka will be eliminated.

3. Sri Lanka

  • 2 points
  • NRR: +0.600
  • Final match: Netherlands

After the initial hiccup against Namibia, Sri Lanka now have their fate in their own hands. If they beat Netherlands, they will qualify to the Super 12s. Which group they end up in depends on the margin of victory, as well as how Namibia fares against UAE.

If they lose, they will need UAE to beat Namibia by a hefty margin to achieve a miracle qualification.

4. UAE

  • 0 points
  • NRR: -2.028
  • Final match: Namibia

Mathematically, UAE can still qualify. But, they need a miracle. First, they require Netherlands to beat Sri Lanka. Second, they need to thrash Namibia by a massive margin to turn around their net run rate of -2.028 compared to the African nation’s much superior +1.277.

The Super 12 stage begins on Saturday with Australia taking on New Zealand at the SCG, followed by England vs Afghanistan at Perth.

SCO vs IRE Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: T20 World Cup 2022 Match 7

SCO vs IRE Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: T20 World Cup 2022 Match 7 | SCO vs IRE Dream11 Prediction | Hobart Pitch Report

Hobart in October is cold, but it does not compare to how Scotland treated West Indies on Monday afternoon. As a result, the Scots can take a massive step towards qualification to the Super 12s with victory against an Ireland side looking to bounce back after also getting treated with disdain against the Sikandar Raza-inspired Zimbabwe.

So, there is everything to gain for Scotland, and no room for error for the Irish. So much is on the line here that stomach for the fight is super important, and Ireland in particular need to find that after collapsing in a heap in the powerplay two nights ago. If they don’t, then their tournament is over, which will be a huge disappointment given their potential and encouraging 3-2 series win recently over Afghanistan.

Ireland have won seven of ten completed T20Is against Scotland, including three in T20 World Cup Qualifiers between 2008 and 2012. But, Scotland is an ever-improving unit these days, highlighted by their efforts in last year’s World Cup, as well as how they brushed West Indies aside with incredible efficiency. So, strap yourselves in, this could be quite the contest.

SCO vs IRE Possible Playing XI

George Munsey is in doubt after picking up an injury against West Indies. If he misses out, Scotland could bring in batting all-rounder Brandon McMullen or keeper-batsman Craig Wallace, and elevate Calum MacLeod to opener.

Scotland: 1. George Munsey, 2. Michael Jones, 3. Matthew Cross (wk), 4. Richie Berrington (c), 5. Calum MacLeod, 6. Michael Leask, 7. Chris Greaves, 8. Mark Watt, 9. Josh Davey, 10. Safyaan Sharif, 11. Brad Wheal

Ireland may look to stick with the same team that had a disappointing defeat against Zimbabwe.

Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Andy Balbirnie (c), 3. Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4. Harry Tector, 5. Curtis Campher, 6. George Dockrell, 7. Gareth Delaney, 8. Mark Adair, 9. Simi Singh, 10. Barry McCarthy, 11. Josh Little

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Scotland:

  • George Munsey batted beautifully against West Indies (66*), as he stayed calm even when his scoring rate slowed down. Against Ireland, Munsey has scored 190 runs in eight matches at an average of 23.75 and superb strike rate of 163.79.
  • Watch out for Matthew Cross. The keeper-batsman has an excellent record against Ireland, with 234 runs in eight outings at an average of 39.00 and strike rate of 145.34.
  • Calum MacLeod vs Ireland: 7 inns, 177 runs, avg. 35.40, SR 126.43.
  • Ireland’s lineup is full of right-handers, so watch out for Mark Watt. The left-arm spinner was outstanding against West Indies (3/12), and he has seven wickets in six matches against Ireland.
  • Michael Leask was superb against West Indies (2/15). But, the Ireland lineup is full of right-handers, so how Scotland use him will be interesting to see. Chris Greaves may get a bowl with his legspin.
  • Safyaan Sharif has taken the most wickets for Scotland against Ireland (11) at an average of 23.45 and economy of 8.41.

Ireland:

  • Paul Stirling will be relieved that Scotland don’t have a left-arm seamer in their lineup. But, his form is a significant worry. After the duck against Zimbabwe, Stirling has scored just 20 runs in his last eight T20 matches.
  • Stirling has a great record against Scotland (5 inns, 248 runs, avg. 49.60, SR 166.44), and Ireland will be hoping he displays those sort of numbers today.
  • Andy Balbirnie has a strike rate of 157.14 in six T20Is against Scotland (198 runs, avg. 33.00, HS 74). Also, the skipper has scored the most runs for Ireland this year (467) at an average of 23.35 and strike rate of 130.44.
  • George Dockrell was one of the few batsmen to show resistance for Ireland against Zimbabwe. He is having a good year with the bat, with 356 runs at an average of 32.36 and strike rate of 144.12.
  • Josh Little is also having a great year, but with the ball. His 3/24 against Zimbabwe propelled him to 31 wickets in just 20 T20Is in 2022, with a strike rate of 14.3.
  • Mark Adair will be key in the powerplay and death overs. The seamer has taken 23 wickets in 21 T20Is this year (econ. 8.64), including 2/39 last match against Zimbabwe. One wicket came in the 16th over and the other in the 20th.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 13, Ireland 7, Scotland 3, N/R 1.
  • George Munsey has the best strike rate for Scotland in T20Is (143.61) among players with at least 100 runs.
  • Richie Berrington played in the first Ireland vs Scotland T20I, way back in 2008. The skipper has scored 200 runs in 11 T20Is against the Irish at an average of 25.00 and strike rate of 126.58.
  • George Dockrell recently went unbeaten in all five matches against Afghanistan: 10*, 25*, 58*, 41* and 7*.

Bellerive Oval Hobart Pitch Report and Weather

Teams batting first continue to enjoy success at Hobart. Chasing teams have won approximately just 20% of T20s on this ground in the past three years, so batting first and posting a score of 160+ will be a tough chase.

A mostly clear day is forecast for Hobart, with a top of about 20 degrees.

It’s go time for Sri Lanka after their shock thumping at the hands of the impressive Namibia. Could you imagine a situation where the reigning Asia Cup champions miss out on the Super 12s? The Lions should still qualify if they are switched on, so how quickly they can bounce back will be key as UAE showed they are capable of being competitive.

UAE’s pacers were excellent in their close-fought defeat to the Dutch on Sunday night. Interestingly, the Sri Lankans were shaky against seam bowling pitched in line with the stumps, and that’s where the UAE bowlers focused on two nights ago. Anything is possible they can repeat that sort of intensity and execution, but they will need to find ways to score effectively against a Sri Lanka attack that is aiming to redeem itself.

The surface for the Netherlands-Namibia match was very slow in Geelong, so expect the spinners to have a say in this match.

SL vs UAE Possible Playing XI

Despite the loss, Sri Lanka should stick with the same team.

Sri Lanka: 1. Pathum Nissanka, 2. Kusal Mendis (wk), 3. Dhanajaya de Silva, 4. Danushka Gunathilaka, 5. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6. Dasun Shanaka (c), 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Chamika Karunaratne, 9. Pramod Madushan Liyanagamage, 10. Dushmantha Chameera, 11. Maheesh Theekshana

UAE may also look to stick with the same team.

UAE: 1. Chirag Suri, 2. Muhammad Waseem, 3. Kashif Daud, 4. Vriitya Aravind (wk), 5. Zawar Farid, 6. Basil Hameed, 7. Chundangapoyil Rizwan (c), 8. Aayan Afzal Khan, 9. Karthik Meiyappan, 10. Junaid Siddique, 11. Zahoor Khan

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Sri Lanka:

  • Kusal Mendis will be tasked with providing a strong start. When he opens in T20Is, Mendis has scored 608 runs at an average of 30.4 and strike rate of 141. In all other positions, Mendis has scored 234 runs at an average of 11.14 and strike rate of 97.90.
  • Pathum Nissanka is Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in T20Is in 2022 (508) at an average of 29.88 and strike rate of 114.15.
  • Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a magnificent Asia Cup. He smashed 191 runs in six matches at an average of 47.75 and strike rate of 149.21. This includes a man of the match 71* off 45 balls in the Final.
  • Wanindu Hasaranga is a threat to higher-ranked nations, let along lesser experienced batsmen. In 2022, Hasaranga has taken 20 wickets in 12 T20Is at an average of 18.05 and strike rate of 13.5.
  • Pramod Madushan Liyanagamage has already taken eight wickets in three T20Is. His economy rate of 9.04 is on the high side, but his wicket-taking ability is clear with a four-wicket haul.
  • Maheesh Theekshana is conceding just 6.66 runs per over in 15 T20Is in 2022. Given the UAE batsmen struggled to get going against the Dutch, expect Theekshana to build the sort of pressure that can allow the bowler at the other end to take wickets, too.

UAE:

  • Muhammad Waseem was UAE’s top scorer against Netherlands (41). Also, their premier batsman is their highest run-getter this year, with 544 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38.85 and strike rate of 147.42.
  • Vriitya Aravind has a strike rate of 137.09 in 13 innings this year (425 runs). Chirag Suri (369 runs in 2022) has hit three of UAE’s top ten individual scores in T20Is: 84*, 86, and 88).
  • Junaid Siddique was outstanding against Netherlands (3/24). His ability to hit the stumps is a key feature, and Sri Lanka were poor with the bat in that area against Namibia.
  • Zahoor Khan was also brilliant against the Dutch (1/11). The seamer has taken 42 wickets in 35 T20Is at an economy of just 6.74 and strike rate of 17.7.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Sri Lanka beat UAE by 14 runs in a close match in 2016. This remains the only meeting between the teams in T20Is.
  • Only one UAE batsman had a strike rate of over 100 against Netherlands (Kashif Daud, 107.14).
  • Dasun Shanaka was Sri Lanka’s top scorer against Namibia (29). The skipper has a good record in T20Is in 2022: 18 inns, 448 runs, avg. 34.46, SR 142.22.

Simonds Stadium Geelong Pitch Report and Weather

Batting was quite tricky in the Netherlands-UAE match under lights on Sunday. Then, the surface for the Netherlands-Namibia game during the day was very slow, with cutters into the wicket the order of the day for the seamers.

A score of 130-150 batting first can prove to be a tough chase in a tournament where chasing teams are struggling. The forecast is for a clear evening in Geelong with temperatures expected to drop below ten degrees.

Which players have scored a century in men’s T20s for England?

Which players have scored a century in T20s for England? | The four players with a T20 century for England in men’s T20s.

Scoring a century will forever be the ultimate achievement in cricketing circles, with anybody fortunate enough to have experienced the thrill of raising a celebratory bat towards the dressing room and stands boasting enough memories to last a lifetime.

Said heroics are, in theory, a little easier to savor in the five-day event of a Test arena, with time very much on the side of those looking to put willow on leather. When the competitive timeframe is shortened in a white-ball environment, runs need to flow a little quicker as the scoreboard is kept ticking over.

When there are only 20 overs in which to work, then centurions become an endangered species that are very rare to come across. Hitters may become bigger on a seemingly annual basis, but even those with the heaviest of slugs can find it hard to reach three figures.

List of players who have scored a century in men’s T20s for England

Alex Hales – 116*

Destructive opening batsman Hales has returned to the England fold after being forced to sit out a 50-over World Cup triumph in 2019, with a slate wiped clean for a man who certainly knows his way to the boundary rope – and the back of a stand! A record-setting innings was produced against Sri Lanka at the 2014 World T20, with a century reached from just 63 balls.

Dawid Malan – 103*

Malan is the ultimate model of consistency in white-ball cricket, with a remarkable ability boasted to time just about any delivery and innings to perfection. He may not be the most glamorous of batsmen, with fireworks not really his kind of thing, but he can be a game-changing presence if allowed to build his way into an innings – as he did in some style against New Zealand in November 2019.

Liam Livingstone – 103

Very much a T20 cricketer for the modern era, Livingstone has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence. So high has his star soared that he is now one of the most sought-after and expensive performers in the ever-expanding world of franchise cricket. His most impressive performance with the bat in an England shirt came against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in July 2021.

Jos Buttler – 101*

It is only fitting that the finest white-ball player that England has ever produced finds himself on a notable list, with Buttler boasting run-scoring ability that is almost unmatched. He required just 67 balls to pass 100 against Sri Lanka in November 2021 and now boasts centuries in all three formats of the game.

Next?

Given the options available to England, and with scores creeping ever higher both individually and collectively when only having 120 deliveries to work with, who will be next to join England’s club of T20 centurions?

Pat Cummins named as Australia ODI captain

Cricket News: Pat Cummins named as Australia ODI captain | Pat Cummins replaces Aaron Finch as Australia ODI captain

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins has been unveiled as the country’s new ODI skipper, replacing the recently retired Aaron Finch. Cummins was one of a few candidates for the position, and was selected for the role after being endorsed by the Cricket Australia board.

The fast bowler is Australia’s 27th ODI captain. A three-match series against England in November could be his first assignment, should he get through the T20 World Cup unscathed.

Pat Cummins to captain Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup, others to step in along the way

Given his workload and important role as Test bowling leader and captain, Cummins is expected to take breaks between now and the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Should he not be available for any one-dayers, the likes of Alex Carey and even David Warner can take over for certain matches.

Speaking to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald ahead of Australia’s T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand this week, Cummins said that he does not want to be missing any Test matches, so workload management is key.

“We’ve got 12 months to the next World Cup and you can break it down a little bit for that,” he said. “I also think historically the idea that if you’re the captain you’ve got to play every single game, with our team, the reality is no one is going to play every game, there’s too many games in the calendar.”

“I certainly don’t want to be missing any Test matches because I’m cooked from another format. You could make it work where you’re not having to play every single game if it’s not in the best interests of the next Test series coming up, or something like that.”

To ensure everyone is fit for Tests and World Cups, Cummins said that sharing the responsibility in bilaterals along the way is vital. Alex Carey has already captained Australia in ODIs, in West Indies last year, and is a natural leader by all accounts.

“You can share those responsibilities amongst a few of the other senior guys. [Test series and world cups] are the ones you want everyone playing for, they’re obviously the pinnacle, and then you work back from them,” Cummins said.

Selection chair George Bailey said Cummins’ excellent leadership of the Test side – that now includes an Ashes series win and victory in Pakistan – won him the role of ODI captain.

“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India,” Bailey said.

Australia vs England 2022 ODI series schedule

Just four days after the T20 World Cup Final, Australia will take on England in a three-match ODI series. As a key member of the T20 bowling attack, it remains to be seen whether Cummins actually lines up in this series. Alex Carey could be the player who leads the team.

Schedule:

  • 1st ODI, Adelaide, Thursday November 17 (D/N)
  • 2nd ODI, Sydney, Saturday November 19 (D/N)
  • 3rd ODI, Melbourne, Tuesday November 22 (D/N)

NAM vs NED Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: T20 World Cup 2022 Match 5

NAM vs NED Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: T20 World Cup 2022 Match 5 | NAM vs NED Dream11 Prediction | Geelong Pitch Report

Thought the T20 World Cup begins in the Super 12s stage? Think again. What a start it has been to the tournament, with the Associate nations shining brightly on the opening two days.

Namibia kicked things off with a superb, magnificent and historic victory over Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka. Not only did they beat the Lions, but they demolished them, sparking scenes of celebrations and tears in equal measure. The all-rounders – clearly Namibia’s main strength – were outstanding, and the Frylinck-Smit-Wiese trio will be out to inflict more damage.

However, the key question for the Namibians is whether they can back up such an emotionally charged victory with a focused performance two days later. They certainly have the depth and balance to do so, but Netherlands are battle-hardened after a very hard-fought victory over UAE. The Dutch bowling attack looked in rhythm, but the batting requires greater application, particularly against the disciplined Namibian attack that includes the impressive Ben Shikongo who often attacks the stumps much like the UAE bowlers did.

The winner will take a massive step towards qualification towards the Super 12s. The stakes are high, and this promises to be a fascinating contest.

NAM vs NED Possible Playing XI

Namibia should look to stick with a winning combination.

Namibia: 1. Michael van Lingen, 2. Divan la Cock, 3. Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, 4. Stephen Baard, 5. Gerhard Erasmus (c), 6. Jan Frylinck, 7. David Wiese, 8. JJ Smit, 9. Zane Green (wk), 10. Bernard Scholtz, 11. Ben Shikongo

Netherlands may also look to stick with the same XI that prevailed over UAE.

Netherlands: 1. Vikramjit Singh, 2. Max O’Dowd, 3. Bas de Leede, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Roelof can der Merwe, 8. Tim Pringle, 9. Logan van Beek, 10. Fred Klaasen, 11. Paul van Meekeren

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Namibia:

  • Jan Frylinck produced an all-round performance for the ages against Sri Lanka. He won player of the match with his 44 (28) and 2/26. He took 2/36 against Netherlands in last year’s World Cup, where he dismissed Colin Ackermann.
  • David Wiese belted 66* off 40 balls against the Dutch in the 2021 World Cup. Also, expect Wiese to play a key role with the ball on the Geelong pitch that favours good length bowling with changes of pace. The all-rounder took 2/16 in four overs vs Sri Lanka.
  • JJ Smit (31 off 16 and 1/16) had a dream outing against Sri Lanka. The left-armer has taken nine wickets in four T20Is in 2022 at an economy of 5.66 and average of 9.33.
  • Ben Shikongo broke the back of the Sri Lankan batting early. The impressive seamer was on a hat-trick at one point, and eventually finished with 2/22.
  • Bernard Scholtz is Namibia’s leading wicket taker in T20Is in 2022 with ten (avg. 18.10, econ. 5.65). He stifled Sri Lanka on the Geelong surface and finished with 2/18.

Netherlands:

  • Max O’Dowd has scored the most runs in NED-NAM T20Is (110) at an average of 55.00 and strike rate of 107.84.
  • Bas de Leede continues to impress. The all-rounder is Netherlands’ leading player with both bat (303 runs) and ball (13 wickets) in T20Is this year. He won player of the match against UAE with his 3/19.
  • Skipper Scott Edwards is Mr. Reliable for Netherlands in 2022. He led his side home with a composed 16* against UAE, and he has the white-ball form this year to make a bigger score in this match.
  • Logan van Beek has taken 13 wickets in just seven innings this year at an average of 13.30 and economy of 7.10. He did, however, go wicketless in two expensive overs vs UAE (0/19).
  • Fred Klaasen bowled beautifully on the Geelong pitch vs UAE to finish with 2/13 off four overs. One wicket came in the middle overs and another in the final over, so he is capable of taking late wickets as well as scalps upfront.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 4, Namibia 2, Netherlands 2.
  • Namibia (166/4) chased Netherlands’ 164/4 with an over to spare in last year’s World Cup.
  • Gerhard Erasmus will be looking to improve on his 45 runs in three matches vs Netherlands. In nine T20Is this year, Erasmus has scored 274 runs at an average of 45.66 and strike rate of 128.03.

Simonds Stadium Geelong Pitch Report and Weather

Expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to bat first. Three of the four games in this World Cup have been won by the team batting first, including Namibia, whose 163 was way too many for Sri Lanka. A similar score by either side in these conditions can easily be a winning one, with the key formula of bowling into the wicket.

Netherlands are the only team to win chasing, but they made hard work of reaching 112 against UAE on a tricky pitch. A mostly sunny afternoon is forecast for Geelong, with 0% of rain according bom.gov.au.

5 players who can surprise in the T20 World Cup 2022

Cricket News: 5 players who can surprise in the T20 World Cup 2022 | Possible surprise packets in the 2022 T20 World Cup

The biggest ICC event of the year, the T20 World Cup 2022 is here, and the excitement is sky-high. The World Cup, now in its eighth edition, provides an ideal platform for players to showcase their talent, and the shortest format of the game is conducive to individual displays of brilliance.

The upcoming edition promises to be no different. Apart from the big names, there are also not very well-known players in most teams who have little or no experience of international cricket. While it is expected of seasoned campaigners to do well in an event of such magnitude, some of the less-known names may also use this platform to prove their mettle. There have been a few instances where a certain unknown player produced a performance for ages to clinch the victory for the team.

That being said, here are five names to keep an eye on in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 (in no particular order).

5 possible surprise packets in the 2022 T20 World Cup

Keshav Maharaj, South Africa

The left-arm Proteas spinner has been a regular feature in the Test arena since his debut in 2016. While he has played 45 Tests in his career, he’s been a late bloomer in T20 internationals with only 21 matches worth of experience.

With exemplary control over the ball, Maharaj can bowl at any phase of the game which makes him a valuable asset for the Proteas. With big boundaries in play, he is likely to pose a threat to opposition batters. In 21 T20Is, he has picked up 19 wickets, with the best figures of 2/24. He has shown that he can be economical, giving away just 7.18 runs an over in his short T20I career so far.

Maharaj has played 125 T20s overall, boasting an excellent economy rate of 6.71. A handy lower-order batter, Maharaj can get some bonus runs for his team whenever he will be required with the bat. All in all, Maharaj will be an ideal foil for South Africa’s stellar pace attack.

Finn Allen, New Zealand

The talented Finn Allen is well known in New Zealand and among Indian fans due to the IPL. However, this could be the tournament where he makes an even bigger name for himself as the Black Caps seek to make the business end of an ICC event once again.

With Martin Guptill on the outer, Allen is expected to given first opportunity at the top against Australia. In his short T20I career to date, Allen has struck 469 runs at a superb strike rate of 161.72. In 72 T20s, he strikes at a remarkable 171.57.

Brandon King, West Indies

The powerful West Indies top-order batter hogged the limelight after finishing as the leading run-getter in the 2019 edition of the Caribbean Premier League, with 496 from 12 matches including a big century (132 off 72 balls). But he failed to replicate the same success during his initial days with the national team and was dropped from the team after a string of low scores.

However, this year has been different for King in white-ball cricket. Particularly in T20 cricket, King has been one of the top performers for the West Indies with over 400 runs to his name which includes four fifty-plus scores. The technically-sound King is more than capable of doing damage from the first drop.

He will provide solidity to the West Indies batting line-up andlook to carry his rich form from CPL 2022 forward to the showpiece event.

Mark Wood, England

While Wood is a genuinely quick pacer, he is not a proven performer in the T20 format yet, especially in big events like the World Cup. His injury-prone nature is also a cause for concern. In 22 T20Is for England, the express pace bowler has scalped 35 wickets, but his economy rate is on the expensive side – 8.44.

Wood, who missed the entire English summer due to an elbow injury, marked his return to international cricket with six wickets in two games against Pakistan last month. The conditions in Australia will be ideal for someone like Wood to make a mark and help his team push for glory.

The 32-year-old has made excellent use of short balls and has often caught them off guard with his line and length. Wood just has that extra zip to ruffle up the best players, as he has shown in providing problems for has that knack of getting good players out. Wood can inflict fear with his sheer, unadulterated and unfiltered pace. England will be pinning their hopes on Wood to deliver some thunderbolts to knock the opposition batters out with his searing pace.

Arshdeep Singh

The promising young left-arm seamer had a magnificent IPL campaign this year, and riding on that, he earned his maiden national call-up. In his debut match in England, he made his mark straightaway by executing his yorkers at a decent pace with perfection. Then, in his second international tour, Arshdeep claimed eight wickets in five games against the West Indies at a splendid economy rate of 6.58 to claim his first man of the series award.

In 13 T20Is this year, he has bagged 19 wickets at an average of 19.78, while his economy rate of 8.14 is on the slightly higher side. However, Arshdeep bowls the most difficult overs in the power-play and at the death, which is the reason for the high economy rate. The 23-year-old Punjab-based bowler offers swing upfront and is one of the best death overs bowlers in the Indian team.

Given the skills he brings to the table, he will be a sure starter in the playing XI for the World Cup. Arshdeep’s differentiator is his left-arm action, which is much needed for Team India at the moment. Arshdeep’s inclusion in the lineup, with his bag of tricks and willingness, will only give ample much-required options to the Men in Blue.

Top 5: Most runs in T20 World Cup history

Top 5: Most runs in T20 World Cup history | Which player has the most runs in the history of the T20 World Cup?

With white-ball cricket becoming increasingly popular in the modern era, records can be expected to tumble on a regular basis in the years to come. Major tournaments come thick and fast nowadays, with there seemingly always a global gathering of some description to look forward to.

Most runs in T20 World Cups

Mahela Jayawardene – 1,016

The only man – at least so far – to have reached four figures, with the legendary former Sri Lanka captain having set a bar of individual brilliance at a height others are still trying to reach. He has one century and six 50s to his name, with only one duck recorded through 31 innings. Jayawardene was a model of consistency in every format of the game and plundered 26 sixes across his T20 World Cup outings, while nobody can claim to have bettered his haul of 111 fours.

Chris Gayle – 965

It comes as no surprise to find the ‘Universe Boss’ towards the top of a notable run-scoring chart, with the West Indies talisman having made a career out of dispatching opposition bowlers with apparent ease. He has two World Cup centuries and seven half-centuries on the most stunning of sporting CVs, with removing him from the crease becoming an almost impossible task at times. Nobody in the history of the T20 World Cup has hit more sixes than his tally of 63, while a strike rate of 142.75 is quite remarkable.

Tillakaratne Dilshan – 897

The second Sri Lankan legend on the list and the only other man, alongside compatriot Jayawardene, to have plundered more than 100 fours in outings on a T20 World Cup stage. He found the boundary rope with strokes along the deck or chipped over an advancing field on 101 occasions, while there was also enough power in his locker to register 20 sixes. A model of consistency throughout his career, Dilshan could always be relied upon to deliver and will rightly go down in history as an all-time great.

Rohit Sharma – 847

Rohit may not be the top-ranking star from India on a T20 World Cup run-scoring list for long, with an iconic countryman breathing down his neck, but his place in international cricketing folklore is safely secured. A big hitter who likes nothing more than firing the ball into row Z, fireworks are to be expected whenever he arrives in the middle.

He produced plenty of them on the grandest of white-ball stages, with 80 fours and 31 sixes highlighting how difficult he was for opponents to contain, while an average of 38.50 is more than useful in the shortest format of the game.

Virat Kohli – 845

A true superstar of the modern era and a man whose celebrity status now transcends his chosen profession, with Kohli becoming much more than a cricketer. A hero to millions in India, one of the most recognizable figures in sport boasts a stunning average of 76.81 at T20 World Cups and has scored more half-centuries (10) than any other player. Kohli boasts the somewhat unique ability of finding a way to score heavily regardless of the opposition and conditions that he finds himself operating in and against, with his game as much about panache as it is power.

Broken record in 2022?

Jayawardene’s standing in top spot could find itself under serious threat in the not-too-distant future, while the top five could start to look markedly different, with more history set made as the records books are rewritten and a new generation of talent takes center stage.
