India name ODI squad for South Africa series

Cricket News: India name ODI squad for South Africa series | Who made the India ODI squad for South Africa series?

Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the Indian team for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa with the first game slated to be played in Lucknow on Thursday. Shreyas Iyer will be Dhawan’s deputy with the likes of middle-order batsman Rajat Patidar and fast-bowler Mukesh Kumar receiving their maiden national team call-ups as well.

Shubhman Gill, Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad make up the rest of the top-order with most of the seasoned stars being given a rest in the run-up to the T20 World Cup later this month. Ishan Kishan has made a comeback to the squad whereas Sanju Samson will be sharing the wicket-keeping responsibilities with the southpaw. West Bengal-based all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made it to the 16-member squad as well.

Shahbaz will supplement the spin attack along with the wrist-spinning duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi.

The pace quartet comprises Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj and new entrant Mukesh Kumar-who has impressed for Bengal in the domestic circuit and turned up with impressive performances for India ‘A’ in their recent series vs their counterparts from New Zealand. Thakur might be expected to take up greater responsibilities with the bat in the absence of genuine all-rounders and also his solid outings in the aforementioned India ‘A’ series.

The three ODIs will be played in Lucknow, Ranchi and Delhi on 6th, 9th and 11th October respectively. The trio of Chahar, Iyer and Bishnoi are likely to join the Indian squad straight afterwards as they are a part of the standby list for the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan send me to press conferences when we lose badly – Shaun Tait

Cricket News: “Pakistan send me to press conferences when we lose badly” – Shaun Tait | Shaun Tait causes stir in press conference

Pakistan’s bowling coach Shaun Tait hastily hit out at the team-management in the post-match press conference of their defeat in the sixth T20I vs England at the Gadaffi Stadium on Friday. “When we lose badly… they send me when we get beaten badly,” Tait said as his comment seemed to cause instant discomfort to the media moderator of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) next to him.

The moderator instantly switched off the microphone and appeared to have a quick talk with Tait. He reportedly seemed to tell the 39-year-old that his statements might cause a stir on social media, as it did eventually. Earlier, it was Shadab Khan had come for the press-conference after Pakistan won the fifth T20I of the series on Wednesday. However, Tait reflect fairly well on the team’s performance after his initial outburst.

Phil Salt’s 88 off 41 deliveries powered England to chase down 170 runs in merely 14.3 overs at the loss of two wickets.

“They just attacked us. They came out attacking, every ball they tried to hit a boundary. It worked for the first three overs and, in some way, it put our bowlers off guard a little bit. We didn’t do a lot wrong and it was just great batting. Sometimes you have got to give it to the batting team,” the former Australian fast bowler was quoted in a report by the Indian Express.

Pakistan lose series at home to England

The injury-ridden English lineup reinvigorated towards the fag end of the series as they notched consecutive victories in the last couple of games to seal the series 4-3. Dawid Malan bagged 77 runs to take England to a total of 209/3, which they defended with ease in the final game of the series on Sunday.

The Moeen Ali-led side will walk back with a lot of confidence from this series considering that they managed to outclass a strong Pakistani unit in their own backyard despite being 3-2 down after five games of the series.

List of the highest T20I scores by India

Cricket News: List of the highest T20I scores by India | What is the highest score by Team India in T20 Internationals?

India achieved their first T20I series win at home against South Africa in October 2022 after hitting one of their highest ever scores in Guwahati. It was a terrific display of batting, which can only help increase confidence ahead of the World Cup.

Where does India’s 227/3 rank among their highest ever scores? Let’s take a look.

Highest T20I scores by India

260/3 vs Sri Lanka, Indore, 2017

The night Rohit Sharma went on a rampage. During his 43-ball 118, there were calls, and even expectations, that T20 cricket will see its first ever double century after Rohit’s exploits in ODI cricket. It wasn’t to be in the end, but it was an innings to remember, alongside KL Rahul’s 89 off 49 balls.

Sri Lanka, despite a handy score of 172, still fell a mammoth 88 runs short of India’s 260.

244/4 vs West Indies, Lauderhill, 2016

One of the all-time T20I classics. India smashed 244/4 but still lost to West Indies after Evin Lewis’ superb 49-ball 100. Rohit Sharma (63 off 28 balls) and KL Rahul (110* off 51 balls) were the chief contributors once again, but it wasn’t quite enough to deliver victory in this clash.

240/3 vs West Indies, Mumbai, 2019

West Indies were on the end of a big total once again by India, this time in Mumbai in 2019. With the series level at 1-1, the duo of Rohit Sharma (71 off 34 balls) and KL Rahul (91 off 56) once again lit the stage, followed by Virat Kohli’s magnificent 70* off 29 balls.

In the end, India’s score of 240 was far too many for Kieron Pollard’s team, who fell short by 67 runs.

227/3 vs South Africa, Guwahati, 2022

Guess who led the way once again? Yes, Rahul and Rohit. With pressure growing on KL regarding his strike rate, he kicked off the Guwahati T20I against South Africa on a mission. His 57 off 28, combined with Rohit’s 43 off 37, got India to 96/0 off 9.4 overs.

From there, Virat Kohli (49 off 28) and the magnificent Suryakumar Yadav (61 off 22 balls) took India to 237/3, a total that was 16 too many for South Africa despite David Miller’s superb hundred.

Also, in this match, Suryakumar Yadav reached the 1,000 run mark in T20Is at an unbelievable strike rate of 175.

225/7 vs Ireland, Dublin, 2022

Deepak Hooda smashed a memorable 104 off 57 balls. Sanju Samson was also terrific with his 42-ball 77. India’s total of 225/7 was surely going to be too many for Ireland, especially given the tourists had a great record in the country.

However, Ireland came within four runs of a famous win. Paul Stirling (40 off 18), Andy Balbirnie (60 off 37) and George Dockrell (34* off 16) took the home side close, but India left with a sigh of relief.

After an exhibition of swing bowling by Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Chahar, attention moves to a must-win game for South Africa in Guwahati. India made the ball talk beautifully in Thiruvananthapuram, where the Proteas’ top order had no answers as they crumbled to 9/5. The fact they batted their full 20 overs from thereon was quite the achievement.

Temba Bavuma’s team, who are highly rated when it comes to T20 World Cup favouritism, need to show their bounce back ability. Despite the collapse in game one, they still possess a number of hard hitters who can make life difficult for any opponent, and will be seeking a confidence boost with the showpiece tournament just weeks away. Indeed, with a formidable bowling attack on paper, the batsmen need to provide enough runs to play with, should they bat first.

For India, the onus will be on the bowlers to once again put their hand up in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. If they can produce in the powerplay once again, it will assist in putting the brakes on a powerful Proteas’ middle order. Also, the form of Suryakumar Yadav continues to thrill all watching, while eyes will be on KL Rahul and whether he can find fluency.

IND vs SA 2nd T20 Possible Playing XI

India could look to stick with the same XI that won the first T20I.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. KL Rahul, 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Suryakumar Yadav, 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Dinesh Karthik, 7. Axar Patel, 8. Deepak Chahar, 9. R Ashwin, 10. Harshal Patel, 11. Arshdeep Singh

South Africa may avoid panicking after a disappointing game one.

South Africa: 1. Temba Bavuma (c), 2. Quinton de Kock (wk), 3. Rilee Rossouw, 4. Aiden Markram, 5. David Miller, 6. Tristan Stubbs, 7. Wayne Parnell/Dwaine Pretorius, 8. Keshav Maharaj, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Anrich Nortje, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

IND vs SA Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

India:

  • No player has more runs in T20Is this year than Suryakumar Yadav (732). Not only that, Surya is averaging 40.66 and easily has the best strike rate among any Indian player who has batted at least five times in 2022.
  • The spotlight is on Rohit Sharma to perform. The India captain, who was dismissed for a duck in the first T20I, has the most runs in IND-SA T20Is with 362 at an average of 30.16 and strike rate 133.08.
  • Virat Kohli has been on a pattern of 50+ scores followed by low scores in recent times. Is this the day he crosses 50 again? India’s number three has scored 257 runs in ten innings vs SA at an average of 32.12 and strike rate of 129.79.
  • Millions will be keen to see the rise of Arshdeep Singh continue. The impressive left-armer was player of the match with 3/32 in the first T20I. Also, all three of his wickets were of left-handers, and he did look more comfortable bowling to them.
  • Axar Patel was player of the match in the recent Australia series, where he took seven wickets in three games at an economy of 6.30. His battle against Aiden Markram could be an interesting one, as Markram has been dismissed thrice for 36 runs in 28 balls by left-arm orthodox in T20s this year.

South Africa:

  • Quinton de Kock has been short of runs against India this year. But, he can never be counted out as he has two half-centuries in six innings against India and has plenty of experience playing in the country.
  • Aiden Markram looked the best of any South Africa top seven player in the opening T20I. He handled the difficult situation quite well, often coming down the wicket to counter swing.
  • Markram is having a brilliant year in T20s. He has scored 540 runs at an average of 49.09 and strike rate of 145.55.
  • Before his duck in the opening T20I, Rilee Rossouw had struck 1,099 runs in 36 T20s this year at an average of 39.25 and incredible strike rate of 175.28.
  • Kagiso Rabada dismissed Rohit for the third time in 56 deliveries in T20s. He has conceded just 70 in the process. Also, Rabada has a good record against Virat, having dismissed him four times for 41 runs in 39 balls in T20s.
  • Can Tabraiz Shamsi overcome a poor record against India? In ten T20Is against them, Shamsi has taken just five wickets at an average of 52.60 and economy of 8.86.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 21, India 12, South Africa 8, 1 N/R.
  • South Africa have never lost a T20I series in India. They lead the home side 5-4 in T20Is in this country.
  • Harshal Patel has taken nine wickets in six T20Is against South Africa this year.
  • David Miller when chasing in T20s in 2022: 22 inns, 527 runs, avg. 58.55, SR 144.38.

If the weather allows for a result, the chasing team will win.

Contenders to replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener

Cricket News: Contenders to replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener | Who will replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener?

Aaron Finch’s retirement from ODI cricket has not only opened up the captaincy debate, but also who will replace him at the top of the order. Despite Finch’s struggles at the backend of his career, his shoes are big ones to fill, having finished with 17 ODI centuries – the third-most ever for Australia behind Ricky Ponting (29), David Warner and Mark Waugh (both 18).

With the 2023 ODI World Cup just a year away, Australia will be aiming to lock down the opener slot, starting with three matches against England after the 2022 T20 World Cup. As a result, there may be a desire to see immediate returns, while an eye to the future perhaps for after the showpiece tournament in India next year.

Who will be the next ODI opener for Australia?

With that being said, here are the some contenders to replace Aaron Finch and partner David Warner as Australia ODI opener.

Travis Head

Cricket News: contenders to replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener | Who will replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener?

The South Australia captain is arguably the favourite to replace Finch. Head has a strong record as ODI opener, with seven 50+ scores in 15 innings at an overall average of 45.53 and strike rate of 104.92. Also, earlier in 2022, Head smashed 190 runs in three ODIs in Pakistan at a strike rate of 132.87.

Head’s attacking mindset upfront might sway the selectors to go with the left-hander. Such an approach can prove crucial in India next year, where conditions may be best when the two new balls are hardest.

Ben McDermott

McDermott struck a century in the same series against Pakistan. The right-hander looked comfortable for the most part against spin, after getting settled against seam up top.

Also, the Tasmania batsman made a strong start to the 2022/23 Marsh Cup, where he struck two half-centuries in the first two matches. His technique and ability to shift gears makes him difficult to ignore from a selectors’ perspective.

Josh Philippe

Cricket News: contenders to replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener | Who will replace Aaron Finch as Australia ODI opener?

Josh Philippe has put himself on the selectors’ radar with a century early in the 2022/23 Marsh Cup. Also, his BBL exploits in recent years has put him among the best prospects in Australian white-ball cricket.

However, Philippe’s relatively slow start to his international career, particularly on slow wickets, makes him a candidate the selectors may look at after the 2023 World Cup. But, if he continues to perform well domestically, the think tank may be tempted to give him a chance to prove his worth in Australian colours before the big tournament in India.

Other strong contenders include Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Marnus Labuschagne. It will be interesting to see if the selectors go with an option that can serve them well for the next 12 months, or with more of an eye to the future.

Which team is the favourite for the 2022 T20 World Cup?

The highly anticipated 2022 T20 World Cup is fast approaching. With that comes great speculation, discussion and debate on which teams will challenge for the title, and of course, who will emerge victorious.

Australia will host a number of terrific teams in this tournament, many of whom are a genuine chance of reclaiming the title from Aaron Finch’s team. New Zealand are always thereabouts, India have too many good players to count out, England are packed with power, and the likes of Pakistan and South Africa are dark horses.

Who is the favourite for the T20 World Cup?

Below are the betting odds, according to sportsbet.com.au. In what comes as no surprise, there are a few leading contenders according to the bookmakers, each considered to be a decent chance of lifting the trophy on November 13 at the MCG.

Australia $3.50

The host nation is favourite to successfully defend their title. Australia, at home, with the addition of Tim David and possible inclusion of Cameron Green, look strong. Also, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc are all set to return after missing the recent India series.

On paper, Australia look to have all bases covered. However, areas of concern look to be the T20I form of Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell, as well as how Steve Smith fits into the team. But, the squad depth is looking healthy.

India $4.33

India are listed as second favourite for the title. The men in blue are seeking their first ICC trophy since their triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy, and eyes will be fixed on whether Rohit Sharma’s team can hold their nerve in the big moments.

However, the absence of Jasprit Bumrah could prove to be a massive blow. Also, how India overcome the mental baggage of falling short in recent global tournaments will be interesting to see. But, they have too much talent to be written off.

England $5.00

England have had a challenging year in T20Is. However, the talent and power they have on paper makes them too good to ignore. That consensus is also held by the bookmakers, with Jos Buttler’s team listed at third favourite for the title.

South Africa $8.00

Can the Proteas overcome their ICC tournament curse? Heading into the tournament as one of the world’s most exciting T20 teams, South Africa have an opportunity to put years of hurt behind them with glory on November 13. They have a side filled with batting power, and their bowling attack possesses the pace and variety to do well in Australia.

However, Temba Bavuma’s batting and leadership will come under the spotlight, as well as whether South Africa can perform under pressure. It must be remembered, though, that they had an excellent 2021 campaign, narrowly missing out on the Semi Finals in heartbreaking fashion despite winning four of their five matches.

New Zealand & Pakistan $9.00

The Black Caps are always in the conversation at the business end of global tournaments. In fact, New Zealand played in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup Finals, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup Final. However, they failed to win any of those three matches, and whether they can produce their best cricket in Australia remains to be seen.

Pakistan are also at $9.00. The men in green are always a team to watch given the talent they have in their ranks. However, the reliance on key players such as openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam is a concern.

What are the other teams priced at?

West Indies, who have a vastly different team to that of 2021, are priced at $15.00. Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka have come in from $21.00 to $18.00, as they have the potential to surprise teams.

Afghanistan, who boast of a number of players with T20 experience, are out at $51.00. Bangladesh are further out at $101.00, followed by Zimbabwe, Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, Scotland and UAE all priced at $501.00.

I’ll call batsman back after a mankad in a WC Final – Jos Buttler

Cricket News: I’ll call batsman back after a mankad in a WC Final – Jos Buttler | Buttler says England are against running out a non-striker

English limited-overs skipper Jos Buttler has expressed that his team doesn’t stand for a bowler running out a non-striker and that his team will rather call back a batsman if any of their players dismissed the opposition that way.

“No, I am calling the batsman back. No one wants to see them (mode of dismissal) in the game because they always create such a talking point when it should be about the battle between bat and ball and watching great games of cricket. They always seem to happen at unsavoury times,” Buttler told TalkSPORT as he was confronted with this question in the aftermath of the Deepti Sharma-Charlotte Dean episode at Lord’s on Sunday.

Moeen Ali shares similar views to Jos Buttler about the mankad

Vice-captain Moeen Ali has further reiterated that he understood that the mode of dismissal wasn’t illegal but he hoped that it wouldn’t become a common practice. “I don’t think I’ll ever do it unless I was really angry with someone. It’s in the laws and there’s nothing illegal so people that do it have the right, but I just hope it doesn’t become a common thing, or something that’s regularly done,” the all-rounder said in an interaction with the Telegraph.

The 35-year-old added, “You are not really working to get a wicket. At least with a run-out, there’s a bit of work that has to be done, and with all the other dismissals. This is just waiting for the guy and taking the bails off. Even when I played cricket as a kid in the garden, it’s not my thing to do.”

The Marlyebone Cricket Club (MCC) has, however, put the onus on the non-striker to back up at the crease at the time of the release of the delivery. Buttler’s comments have gained traction in social media as he was at the centre of a similar incident involving him and Ravichandran Ashwin in one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches back in 2019.

Buttler and Moeen join the long list of former and current English internationals to have criticised Deepti Sharma and the Indian women’s team for resorting to such a method to emerge victorious in the third ODI between the two teams on Sunday. England is in the middle of a seven-game T20I series against Pakistan that the latter is leading by 3-2 currently.

Will there be DRS in the Big Bash League (BBL)?

Cricket News: Will there be DRS in the Big Bash League (BBL)? | An update on the new playing conditions in the WBBL and BBL

The Decision Review System (DRS) will be introduced for both the men’s and women’s versions of the Big Bash League (BBL) from the coming season onwards.

However, DRS will be available in all of the BBL games but only 24 WBBL games that will be broadcast on both Seven and Foxtel.

On the other hand, 35 WBBL matches will be broadcast via live stream on Seven and cricket.com.au. As of now, BBL officials have assured that they will work towards bringing about greater and widespread DRS coverage for the future WBBL campaigns.

Delighted to have DRS in the BBL – Alistair Dobson

Logistical hurdles, multiple games played on the same day coupled with different technology providers used by Seven and Foxtel had emerged as impediments in the implementation of the DRS in the BBL so far.

“The league is delighted to introduce DRS… in line with the very best cricket competitions in the world. Implementing DRS has been a challenging task for the BBL, which is the most logistically complex T20 league in the world,” BBL chief Alistair Dobson was quoted in a report by cricket.com.au.

Dobson added, “That, plus the impact of the pandemic on travel and movement, have meant the technology has not been possible to introduce until this season.”

No more Bash Boost point or X-Factor substitution

The Power Surge innovation in which the batting side is allowed a two-over period from the 11th over onwards with only two opposition fielders outside the inner circle will now be extended to the WBBL. However, the powerplay duration is reduced to only four overs at the start of the innings in this case. On the other hand, the Bash Boost point and X-factor substitution modifications will be done away with in the upcoming campaign.

“We retain a clear desire to innovate and drive our leagues forward but are also willing to review decisions that have not realised the intended positive impact, such as the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution,” Dobson opened up on this latest development.

The opening match of the WBBL between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers in Mackay on 13th October will be the first game in the history of the competition to have the DRS technology available.

Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of T20 World Cup – reports

Cricket News: Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of T20 World Cup – reports | Bumrah out of T20 World Cup due to back stress fracture injury

According to BCCI sources, Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture injury. Bumrah missed the first T20I against South Africa on September 28 due to back soreness, and reports have emerged that the injury is worse than first thought.

ESPNcricinfo confirmed Bumrah was in Bengaluru for fresh scans on his back on Wednesday. However, the consensus is that he will not play in the World Cup.

The news comes as a huge blow to India’s World Cup hopes. The men in blue are without a global trophy since 2013, and Bumrah is a key part of the attack given his ability to strike in all phases of an innings. His absence will force the think tank to work out how to effectively replace his quality.

Reports: Bumrah out of T20 World Cup, Shami or Siraj likely to be added to squad

“Bumrah is not going to play the World T20 for sure. He has a serious back condition. It’s a stress fracture and he could be out for a period of six months,” said a senior BCCI official to PTI.

Bumrah’s likely absence is already on top of Jadeja’s. “Losing Bumrah and Jadeja will be huge for India. We didn’t expect that things will pan out as they have. He was rested for the Asia Cup precisely to manage his workload management. Now it remains a question if he was even fit enough to play the Australia series,” said the BCCI official.

According to reports, either Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj are likely to be added to the squad as Bumrah’s replacement. Shami was set to feature in the T20Is against Australia and South Africa after he was left out for the Asia Cup, but he tested positive for COVID-19 and was subsequently ruled out. Fellow seamer Siraj’s inclusion may seem a risk on first glance given his last T20 was back in IPL 2022. However, the right-armer has improved his game over the past two years, particularly in the powerplay and middle overs.

Soon after the World Cup, India will travel to New Zealand for three T20Is and three ODIs of which Bumrah is likely to be unavailable, and is the case for India’s subsequent assignments too.

ECB offers India & Pakistan to play a Test against each other in England

Cricket News: ECB offers India & Pakistan to play a Test against each other in England | Will India and Pakistan play a Test in England?

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has offered to host a Test series between India and Pakistan.

The arch-rivals last competed in the red-ball format way back in December 2007. ECB’s deputy chairperson Martin Darlow has sounded his idea to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja amidst England’s ongoing T20I series against Babar Azam’s men.

The offer is being seen as the ECB’s way of making it up to the PCB after England pulled out of a two-match T20I series in Pakistan last year. However, the PCB is unlikely to accept the aforementioned offer as it has managed to bring international cricket back to their home grounds after playing host in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for many years.

Back in 2010, Pakistan had hosted Australia for a couple of Tests in England. However, the Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir, Mohammed Asif spot-fixing scandal strained the relations between the Pakistani and English cricketing boards later on that year.

India, Pakistan two great teams and two massive playing nations – Moeen

“That would be brilliant. It’s a shame that they don’t obviously play each other unless it’s a World Cup or an ICC event but they’re two great teams and two massive playing nations,” England’s stand-in skipper Moeen Ali was quoted in a report by the ESPNcricinfo.

The 35-year-old added, “With the viewing [figures] and all that, it would be one of the biggest games because it’s not been done for a very long time. It would be a great game because Pakistan have a really good bowling attack as well as India now, and India have a great Test side. It would be really good.”

India and Pakistan have largely met only in multi-nation tournaments as political relations between the two countries strained in the aftermath of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008. Pakistan last toured India for a couple of T20Is and three ODIs in December 2012-January 2013.
