India-Australia to play 5-Match Test series from next FTP cycle

Cricket News: India-Australia to play 5-Match Test series from next FTP cycle | How many Tests will the Border Gavaskar Trophy be?

The India-Australia Test series will be a five-match affair from the next cycle of the Future Tours Program (FTP) of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This expanded tour will commence from India’s tour Down Under in the 2024 season. Australia’s upcoming series in India in February-March 2023 will continue to be a four-game contest.

The Australian recently reported that Cricket Australia (CA) will receive a boost from this development given that they are set to kick off negotiations on a new broadcast deal soon.

Four Tests are worth $400 million to the CA as per the most recent agreement. An additional five-day game vs India every four years is expected to add significantly to the board’s broadcast revenues.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy to be 5 Tests in next FTP cycle

India and Australia have played five-match Test series on five occasions in the past and the last one of those was held in 1991-92. The two sides also played out a six-game series back in 1979-80.

Several cricketing boards are in the process of finalising the next cycle of the FTP that will initiate post the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final next year. The FTP is likely to be approved in the upcoming annual conference of the ICC in Birmingham, Cricbuzz reports.

Prior to that, Australia’s four-match Test series in India early on next year holds immense importance. It will be instrumental for the qualifying chances of both the sides for the WTC finale. As of now, Australia and India sit at the second and fifth spot in the WTC standings respectively.

The Aussies will also be playing out a limited-overs series in India before the World T20 Down Under later on this year. Their schedule in September-October will include three T20Is and ODIs each. However, there are still apprehensions over the ODIs given that the T20 World Cup will start off from the second-half of October 2022.

The ODI series promised fireworks, but they didn’t light up at The Oval. Jasprit Bumrah tore England to shreds as India completed the most comfortable of victories in a wonderful exhibition of seam bowling.

Now, the series moves to Lord’s on the anniversary of the greatest ODI of all time. Spotlight will be on England’s “fab five” after a capitulation a couple of days ago, with a good start paramount against the brilliant Bumrah-Shami duo.

Also, Rohit’s form is a welcome plus for India, with a number of middle order players – namely Suryakumar, Hardik and Rishabh Pant – all enjoying excellent moments on this tour, too.

ENG vs IND 2nd ODI Possible Playing 11

Virat Kohli is set to feature in this match. Details here.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

England:

  • Jonny Bairstow can set the tone after a brilliant run in the Tests. He has struck two fifties in five ODIs at Lord’s, totalling 224 runs at an average of 56.00.
  • Despite his 7 in the first ODI, Bairstow still has strong numbers vs India: 14 inns, 589 runs, avg. 45.30, SR 105.74.
  • England’s capitulation in the opening match shows the importance of Joe Root. He will be tasked with keeping things ticking over. He has struck 365 runs in eight ODIs at Lord’s at an average of 52.14, including two fifties and a century.
  • Ben Stokes has enjoyed some memorable knocks at Lord’s, most notably his 84* in the World Cup Final exactly three years ago. He has struck 259 runs in seven ODIs at Lord’s (avg. 43.16) and 474 runs in 15 innings vs India (avg. 36.46).
  • Jos Buttler was England’s top scorer in the first match (30). But, the spotlight will continue to shine bright on the England captain, who averages just 21.23 in 17 ODI knocks vs India (361 runs).
  • David Willey will be key against India’s openers. He has dismissed Rohit once (22 runs off 39 balls) and Dhawan twice (50 runs off 70 balls) in ODIs.

India:

  • Rohit Sharma was at his best in the opening match as India strolled towards the target. His 76* further improved his wonderful ODI record in England, which now reads: 25 inns, 1,411 runs, avg. 70.55, SR 91.26.
  • Suryakumar Yadav will be itching for an opportunity after scoring a brilliant century in the third T20I.
  • Rishabh Pant in ODIs vs England: 187 runs, avg. 62.33, SR 142.74. Hardik Pandya’s all-round ability will be key for India. He recently smashed 51 and took 4/33 in the first T20I against England.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is now a record holder for India against England. He was on song in a magnificent bowling display at The Oval with 6/19. He has now taken 28 wickets in 15 ODIs overall in England at an average of 21.42.
  • Mohammed Shami (3/31) was also brilliant in the first ODI. The seamer now has 16 wickets in just six ODIs against England in England (avg. 15.75).
  • Watch out for Prasidh Krishna. He now has 19 wickets at 17.21 at an economy rate of 4.86 in ODIs so far.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 104, England 43, India 56, ties 2, N/R 3.
  • Joe Root will be key in the middle overs. He has never been dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in ODIs (65 balls, 50 runs).
  • Shikhar Dhawan spent important time at the crease at The Oval (31*). He now has 557 runs at an average of 39.78 vs England.
  • Jason Roy averages just 18.27 in six ODIs at Lord’s.
  • Rishabh Pant completed three dismissals at The Oval.
  • Virat Kohli has the most runs of any current player in ENG-IND ODIs (1,307) at an average of 45.06. This includes nine half-centuries and three centuries in 33 innings.

Lord’s Pitch Report and Weather

A warm day is forecast in London. After England’s 110-all out at The Oval, there could be a shift towards a pitch with less grass. Also, expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to chase.

ENG vs IND 2nd ODI Match Prediction: Who will win?

Chasing team to feel more confident? Perhaps, but India’s bowling attack could deliver victory again.

Will Virat Kohli play in the 2nd ODI against England?

Cricket News: Will Virat Kohli play in the 2nd ODI against England? | Will Virat Kohli play in the 2nd ODI at Lord’s?

Virat Kohli is likely to play the second One Day International (ODI) of the ongoing India-England series at Lord’s on Thursday due to a groin injury.

The former India skipper suffered this setback before the opening game of the series on Tuesday. He was replaced by Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer didn’t have to bat as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten partnership helped India chase down the modest 110-run target with ease.

“I wasn’t playing in the last T20 game and he (Kohli) didn’t play today (Tuesday). I don’t have an update on his injury,” fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah addressed the issue, as reported by the Indian Express.

Virat Kohli a strong chance to play in the 2nd ODI

A groin strain can potentially worsen into a full-fledged tear if a player expedites his return to the field. However, Kohli was seen warming up in the nets before the second ODI.

Additionally, the Hindustan Times (HT) has stated that Kohli will be rested for India’s upcoming five-game T20I series vs West Indies (WI). The first T20I will take place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on 29th July.

Kohli’s return to the field after the England series might be pushed till 6th August provided that this news report comes out to be true.

Accordingly, he will be left with only the last couple of games of the WI series, a tour of Zimbabwe, the forthcoming Asia Cup and a home T20I series vs Australia as possible international assignments prior to the World T20 in October.

The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain averages 20.25 with a strike rate of 128.57 in four T20Is in 2022. He endured a similarly indifferent Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign as Kohli notched runs at an average and scoring rate of 22.73 and 115.99 respectively this year.

On that note, he would have ideally liked to play as many T20Is as possible before the T20 World Cup. However, fate seems to be having different plans in store for the seasoned Indian batsman.

Cricket News: Best bowling figures by Indian vs England in ODIs | Who has the best bowling figures for India in ODIs against England?

Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics with the ball helped India totally decimate England in the first One Day International (ODI) of the ongoing series between the two sides at The Oval on Tuesday.

The fast-bowler picked six wickets for 19 runs in 7.2 overs as Jos Buttler’s men were wiped out for 110 runs in merely 25.2 overs. India chased down the target in 18.2 overs powered by the an unbeaten opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.

Best bowling figures by an Indian in an ODI against England

However, the day was all about India’s terrific outing with the ball. On that note, let us take a look at the top five bowling performances by an Indian player against England in ODIs.

1. Jasprit Bumrah: 6/19, 2022

Bumrah optimized the favorable seaming conditions by bowling the right lengths as he sent back Jason Roy and Joe Root for a duck each. He ensured that the Englishmen couldn’t stage a fightback by dismissing the duo of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone as well.

The 28-year-old returned back to clean up the tail by bagging the scalps of David Wiley and Brydon Carse eventually. The English batsmen were completely outclassed by Bumrah’s repertoire of skills as the pacer made light work of the opening ODI.

2. Ashish Nehra: 6/23, 2003

Turning the clock back to one of the all-time classics! Ashish Nehra’s incredible 6/23 against England in the 2003 ODI World Cup has sealed its place as one of the most prominent performances by an Indian bowler on the big stage.

England tumbled for 168 whilst chasing 251 as Nehra dismissed Michael Vaughan, Nasser Hussain, Alec Stewart, Paul Collingwood, Craig White and Ronnie Irani during his 10-over spell. The left-hand quick’s outing at Durban that day continues to remain the best-ever bowling performance by an Indian in the World Cup.

3. Kuldeep Yadav: 6/25, 2018

Kuldeep Yadav’s left-arm leg-spin has been a tough nut to crack for overseas batsmen over the years. The chinaman bowler had picked six wickets for merely 25 runs in 10 overs during the ODI between the two sides at Nottingham in 2018.

Yadav dismissed five batsmen out of England’s top-six. The home team was limited to 268 despite half-centuries from Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler and the duo was ultimately outdone by the spinner’s guile. India chased down the target in merely 40.1 overs and Yadav rightfully bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

4. S Sreesanth, 6/55, 2006

S Sreesanth’s skiddy bowling action troubled the opposition during the early phases of his international career. One of the examples of the same was the ODI in Indore between India and England in 2006. The visitors were put to bat at the toss and they started off decently courtesy Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell.

However, Sreesanth came back took the scalps of Strauss, Matt Prior, Geraint Jones, Ian Blackwell, Liam Plunkett and Sajid Mahmood to derail particularly the backend of the English inning. He conceded 55 runs in the process but the timely dismissals ensured that England couldn’t run away with the game with the bat.

5. Harbhajan Singh, 5/33, 2006

England dealt with a similar sublime bowling performance in the first ODI of that series back in 2006. Chasing a modest total of 208 runs, Flintoff’s men were all out for 164 at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Harbhajan Singh ran a riot as he took five wickets for 31 runs. The English middle-order comprising of Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Jones and Blackwell were found wanting against the off-spinner’s class as they succumbed to an arguably embarrassing defeat in the opening game of the contest itself!

Should Australia pick David Warner & Travis Head for India tour?

Cricket News: Should Australia pick David Warner & Travis Head for India tour? | David Warner & Travis Head under spotlight after poor series vs SL

Australia rounded up their tour to Sri Lanka with a discouraging defeat in the second Test against the hosts. The Pat Cummins-led side suffered its first-ever innings defeat against the Lankans. Prabath Jayasuriya took 12 wickets in the game to completely derail the Australian batting effort.

The Aussies sit in the second spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 rankings currently. They recorded a series victory in Pakistan earlier this year and put up a spirited performance in Sri Lanka as well. However, Cummins’ men are already eyeing the Border Gavaskar Trophy in India next year as their ultimate subcontinental challenge.

“In a lot of ways, it’s been nice to have a subcontinent tour of Pakistan, then here [in Sri Lanka] and build towards India. Conditions will be very different. We will get a lot of variation from venue to venue,” Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori was quoted in a report by ESPNCricinfo following their victory in the first game in Galle.

He added, “You could get anything in between [the pitches in Pakistan and Sri Lanka]. If you play at Mohali it is going to be flat, if you play at Wankhede [in Mumbai] it could turn square like here. You can’t just have one plan.”

Huge wake up call for Australia in Asia, as Warner & Head struggle overseas

However, Australia’s relatively poorer batting performances in the second Test against Sri Lanka must have served the think-tank a rude reminder of the challenges that await them in India. Reinforcements are required in the batting line-p in order to effectively combat the conditions on offer in the country. Amidst this backdrop, the performances of David Warner and Travis Head have come under scanner recently.

Warner anyways has a rather middling record in Tests in India. The southpaw averages 24.25 after eight games and has registered merely three half-centuries in 16 innings. His highest-score in these games is 71 and it is his second-worst average amongst all the nations that he played Tests in.

Cricket News: Should Australia pick David Warner & Travis Head for India tour? | David Warner & Travis Head under spotlight after poor series vs SL
David Warner has had an underwhelming 2022 in Tests.

It is in stark contrast to his robust average of 55.41 in ODIs in India, which indicates that there is a structural defect with the way he approaches the red-ball game particularly in the subcontinent. Warner hasn’t scored a century in his last 21 Test innings and he averages merely 22.17 after seven games in 2022.

He struggles against India’s spin twin of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as well. Ashwin has dismissed him 10 times in Tests whereas Jadeja has sent him back to the pavilion on four occasions. Warner averages merely 18.2 and 14.8 against them respectively and India will most likely unleash its entire spin-bowling repertoire against the 35-year-old.

Travis Head also under the microscope

If Warner’s form has been concerning at the top, it is Travis Head who can face the axe in the middle-order.

Head has been a regular at the number five slot in the last few years majorly due to the promising outcomes that he has delivered Down Under. With four centuries, six half-centuries and an average of 49.88, Head has certainly been an incredible performer for Australia in home conditions.

However, his performances seem to plummet sharply during overseas assignments. The 28-year-old has an average of 23.76 in 11 Tests away from home. The figure reads 22.76, 7.67 and 30.50 in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) respectively.

Cricket News: Should Australia pick David Warner & Travis Head for India tour? | David Warner & Travis Head under spotlight after poor series vs SL
Travis Head continues to struggle overseas.

Warner and Head occupy critical positions that can lay the foundation of Australia’s batting efforts in alien circumstances in India. However, Warner holds too big a stature to be benched for such an important series India. Moreover, he has repeatedly proven his mettle in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the selectors along with the skipper will be hopeful that he can translate some of that form into the Test format.

Australia could look at Glenn Maxwell for India tour

It appears currently that there is a much greater threat to Head’s slot in the side though. The left-hander has no experience of playing Test cricket in India and his overseas performances otherwise do not paint a much rosy picture either. There were intensifying calls of Glenn Maxwell replacing him in the XI recently but that did not transpire in the recent series against Sri Lanka.

Could that be a possibility in the series in India though?

The middle-order maverick has been an instrumental part of Australia’s success in T20Is. He has recorded an average of 70.60 and 40 in ODIs in 2021 and 2022 respectively and looks in fine touch most of the times that he steps on to bat. He has the ability to win matches from precarious situations and any team will require that kind of an unpredictable element in their roster to pull off a feat as momentous as a Test series victory in India. Furthermore, Maxwell’s only ever Test century was in India as well, when he scored 104 runs in the third Test in Ranchi of the 2017 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Can we see a possible shakeup in the Australian batting line-up ahead of the India series next year?

How fit is Joe Root & who bats the longest in the nets? Roy, Topley & Evans tell all

Cricket News: How fit is Joe Root & who bats the longest in the nets? Roy, Topley & Evans tell all | Jason Roy, Laurie Evans, Reece Topley interview with Betway

England cricketers Laurie Evans, Reece Topley and Jason Roy have given fans a deeper look into the personalities and traits of other cricketers. In a funny interview with Betway, the trio provided some insights on their Surrey and England teammates.

How fit is Joe Root & which England player spends the most time in the nets?

Joe Root continues to amaze on the international circuit. England’s second-highest run-scorer in Tests prides himself on his fitness, a key reason for his prolonged success.

Asked about who is the best on the bleep test, Jason Roy said, “Arun Harinath, from my experience, was unbelievable. Joe Root could just run for absolute days.”

With regards to which player is always last out of the nets, Evans and Topley were unanimous on England wicket-keeper Ben Foakes and batsman Ollie Pope.

“He [Foakes] always comes in for a second and third hit,” said Laurie Evans. “Popey’s another long one,” said Topley. “It takes a long time, especially when we are travelling everywhere on coaches at the minute, and we’re all having to wait for Popey and Foakesy to wrap up their hits.”

Hashim Amla, Kumar Sangakkara and others have had a big impact

Asked about which players have helped them improve, Evans spoke of Hashim Amla’s influence. The South African legend was always a calm presence in his international career, and that has also shone through in his county stints.

“I quite enjoy Hashim Amla. Just as a calming influence over the dressing room,” said Evans.

“The mental side of things, 100%,” said Jason Roy. “We’ve been blessed with overseas players that you can’t believe. Kumar Sangakkara, Hash [Hashim Amla], Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith.”

What are some of the cricketers like outside of cricket?

The trio also discussed:

  • The messiest roommate
  • Best footballer
  • Who wears the most outrageous gear
  • Who they would trust to take a catch to save their life

IRE vs NZ 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

IRE vs NZ 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | IRE vs NZ 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Ireland vs New Zealand 2nd ODI Key Players | Malahide Pitch Report

New Zealand will face off against Ireland for the second One Day International (ODI) of their ongoing series at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground on Tuesday.

The Kiwis are coming on the back off a breath-taking victory in the first game courtesy a stupendous unbeaten century by all-rounder Michael Bracewell. Courtesy of that incredible knock, the visitors survived a scare on Sunday and they will ideally like to avoid stumbling in to a similar situation this time around.

They now have an opportunity to seal the series in the second game itself whereas Ireland can take a lot of heart from their performances for the better part of the previous encounter. On that note, let us get into the in-depth details of the forthcoming ODI.

IRE vs NZ 2nd ODI Possible Playing 11

Ireland will most likely head into this game with an unchanged playing XI. They had shown tremendous character in their batting performance on Sunday. The team will however be hoping to imbibe a fierce killing instinct to finish off the game once they open up an opportunity for the same.

Ireland: 1: Paul Stirling, 2: Andrew Balbirnie, 3: Andy McBrine, 4: Harry Tector, 5: Curtis Campher, 6: Lorcan Tucker, 7: George Dockrell, 8: Mark Adair, 9: Simi Singh, 10: Craig Young, 11: Joshua Little.

New Zealand played a pretty strong XI in the last match and yet found themselves in an unfavourable position at one stage. They will refrain from getting complacent and field a similarly prolific side in the coming match as well. However, the return of Mitchell Santner could possibly give a selection headache to Latham, especially after Bracewell’s performance on Sunday.

New Zealand: 1: Martin Guptill, 2: Finn Allen, 3: Will Young, 4: Tom Latham, 5: Henry Nicholls, 6: Glenn Philips, 7: Michael Bracewell, 8: Mitchell Santner, 9: Matt Henry, 10: Lockie Ferguson, 11: Blair Tickner.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

New Zealand:

  • Martin Guptill notched a fluent half-century (51) in the first game. The opener has played only a handful of ODIs in recent years, having featured in four, three and four of them in 2020, 2021 and 2022 respectively. In fact, New Zealand itself hasn’t played many ODIs in the last few years. He will be hoping to get more games under his belt prior to the ODI World Cup next year
  • Tom Latham has average and strike rate of 47.33 and 88.20 respectively in three ODIs against Ireland. He will be looking to rally the middle-order to avoid another batting collapse in this game.
  • Will Young has had a pretty volatile start to his ODI career. He has been dismissed for a solitary run on three instances but has already bagged a couple of centuries in merely six games so far. His scores read: 11*, 1, 103*, 1, 120, 1.
  • New Zealand will be expecting more out of Henry Nicholls. The middle-order mainstay scored his last ODI century (124*) 23 games ago way back in January 2019 against Sri Lanka at Saxton Oval.
  • Finn Allen has been drafted into the ODI side and is widely expected to carry forward his incredible T20 record into the 50-over game. The dynamic batsman has a terrific strike rate of 109.51 in 28 List A matches but at an arguably underwhelming average of 26.82. His ability to notch big scores without deferring from his natural instincts will be closely observed in ODIs.

Ireland:

  • Paul Stirling has been an undeniable stalwart of Irish cricket but his record against the Kiwis leaves a lot to be wanting. The opener averages 5.75 at a meagre strike rate of 46.94 in four ODIs against the New Zealand.
  • Harry Tector has swiftly emerged as a vital cog in this Irish team since debuting in July 2020. The 22-year-old has notched seven half-centuries and a century at an average and scoring rate of 46.06 and 76.32 respectively in merely 21 ODIs.
  • All-rounder George Dockrell has had a horrid time against the Kiwis in the 50-over game as well. The left-arm off-spinner averages 107 with the ball in three ODIs vs New Zealand. He has taken only a single wicket after having bowled 20 overs across these games.
  • With a batting average of 39.18 along with 13 wickets in 14 ODIs, Curtis Campher has assumed a significant role in the middle-order for the Irish side.
  • Mark Adair will need to regain his wicket-taking mojo in order to revitalise his international career. The pacer took 15 wickets in his first nine ODIs but has bagged only 10 more dismissals in the following 16 games.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Played 5, New Zealand 5, Ireland 0.
  • The last game was the first time that Ireland put forth any competitive challenge in front of the Kiwis in all their encounters so far. Prior to Sunday, New Zealand had won their ODIs vs Ireland by margins of 129 runs, 290 runs, 51 runs and 190 runs respectively.
  • Tom Latham has an incredible captaincy record for New Zealand in ODIs. The Kiwis have won 15 of the 17 games that they have played under his leadership in the 50-over game.
  • Ireland has won only one of the last five ODIs that they have played in this stadium.

Malahide Cricket Club Dublin Pitch and Weather Report

By the looks of it, the pitch will assist pacers and batsmen alike. There can be some assistance for seam bowlers early on but one can look forward to another high-scoring encounter this time around. The weather is likely to be cloudy throughout the course of the game though it will rain quite substantially in the lead up to the match.

Strap yourselves in, this will be fun. As the T20Is showed, no guts no glory is high on the agenda, and the ODI series is sure to deliver more of the same.

Jonny Bairstow, the talk of the town, is back for England, alongside Joe Root and Ben Stokes. England know only one way, and with good batting conditions expected at The Oval, the Indian attack has their work cut out to keep them in check. Indeed, with the likes of Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali listed as England’s finishers, India need a strong start upfront to ramp up the pressure on the hosts.

For India, they enter this series off the back of an encouraging T20I series victory. The key was a change in approach, with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli employing an attacking mindset from the beginning. However, the pressure on both remains given various others are in fine form, most notably Suryakumar Yadav who struck a magnificent ton in the final T20I.

ENG vs IND 1st ODI Possible Playing 11

This will be England’s first ODI after Eoin Morgan’s international retirement.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Jonny Bairstow, 3. Joe Root, 4. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 5. Ben Stokes, 6. Liam Livingstone, 7. Moeen Ali, 8. Sam Curran, 9. David Willey, 10. Brydon Carse/Reece Topley, 11. Matt Parkinson

Suryakumar Yadav is likely to get the nod after his brilliant century in the third T20I. Also Prasidh Krishna could win a spot in India’s bowling attack after an excellent series against West Indies earlier in 2022.

According to CricBuzz, Virat Kohli is in some doubt with a groin niggle.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli/Shreyas Iyer, 4. Suryakumar Yadav, 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Hardik Pandya, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Mohammed Shami, 9. Jasprit Bumrah, 10. Prasidh Krishna, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats: Australia’s first ever innings loss to Sri Lanka

Cricket News: SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats: Australia’s first ever innings loss to Sri Lanka | SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats highlights

11 days after an embarrassing defeat where they were dismantled in 22.5 overs, Sri Lanka completed the most remarkable of turnarounds at the same venue against the very same opposition.

Dinesh Chandimal (206*) and Prabath Jayasuriya (12 wickets) were the chief destroyers among others, as Sri Lanka sealed a thumping win by an innings and 39 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne’s team played perfect Test cricket from day one onwards, keeping Australia to under 400 and then grinding down their attack for a mammoth 181 overs. By the time Australia came to bat, they were well and truly out of steam.

In the end, Australia’s tour was a promising one from a Sri Lankan perspective. The home side won the ODI series 3-2 and drew the Tests 1-1 after defeat in the T20I series.

SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats highlights: New records set in Galle

Cricket is home to some great stories and statistics. This Test was no different. Here are some of the best stats highlights from the second Test.

Australia’s first ever loss by an innings against Sri Lanka

With Sri Lanka experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak in their camp after a heavy defeat in the first Test, not many could have expected such a resounding defeat for Australia in the second Test. In fact, this defeat is Australia’s first ever innings loss against Sri Lanka, and just their fifth loss in 33 matches against the island nation.

Australia’s first innings defeat after making 350+

It gets worse for Australia. This is the first time in history that they have lost by an innings after racking up at least 350 in the first innings. It was all looking rosy with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith taking Australia to 204/2 on the first day, but things began to go pear-shaped from there.

12/177: Best match figures on debut for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been home to some of the greatest spinners to ever play the game. However, none have had a debut as fruitful as Prabath Jayasuriya, with the left-arm spinner taking a record 12/177 in the match.

No Sri Lankan spinner has ever taken as many scalps on debut, with the previous best being Praveen Jayawickrama with his 11/178 against Bangladesh in Pallekele in 2021. Jayasuriya was magnificent, making full use of what the conditions had to offer.

Pat Cummins’ first loss as Test captain

Pat Cummins has tasted defeat as Test captain for the first time. He was unbeaten in his first eight Tests as skipper, including three wins against England, a morale-boosting 1-0 series win in Pakistan and a thumping 10-wicket victory in the first Test at Galle.

206*: Highest ever score by a Sri Lankan against Australia

Cricket News: SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats: Australia's first ever innings loss to Sri Lanka | SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats highlights
SL vs AUS 2nd Test stats: Dinesh Chandimal scored 206*

Never before had a Sri Lankan scored a double century against Australia. Dinesh Chandimal became the first, driving the Aussie attack into the ground with his brilliant 206*. In the process, he went past 1,100 Test runs at Galle at a superb average of 50.36.

Kumar Sangakkara held the previous best score by a Sri Lankan against Australia. The great batsman struck a masterful 192 in Hobart in 2007, before a poor umpiring decision cost him the chance to reach a double hundred.

64: Most overs bowled by Nathan Lyon in an innings

Nathan Lyon has sent down plenty of overs in his career, but none more so than in Australia’s bowling innings in this Test. The off-spinner bowled a whopping 64 overs in Sri Lanka’s first innings, which is only the third time an Australian bowler bowled more than 60 overs in a single innings since 1981. The other two were Steve O’Keefe (77 vs India, Ranchi, 2017) and the late, great Shane Warne (70 vs South Africa, Cape Town, 2002).

In the end, the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy was shared. Sri Lanka will now gear up to play a two-match Test series against Pakistan that begins later this week in Galle. For Australia, their next assignment will be a three-match ODI series at home to Zimbabwe that will kick off a huge home season.

Should Virat Kohli be dropped from India’s T20I team? Rohit says no

Cricket News: Rohit: Great Virat Kohli belongs in India’s T20I team | Rohit Sharma says Virat Kohli has been great for a decade

Virat Kohli has found a strong supporter in Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as the former battles through a run of underwhelming form with the bat. Kohli was dismissed for 11 off six deliveries in India’s third T20I vs England at Trent Bridge on Sunday. This follows his previous scores of 11, 20 and 1 in the two Test innings at Edgbaston and the second T20I of this series respectively.

Kohli replaced the in-form Deepak Hooda in the playing XI for the final couple of T20Is against England. Hooda has notched scores of 47*, 104 and 33 at strike rates of 162.07, 182.46 and 194.12 respectively in his last three T20Is. He has showed intent and the skillset to implement it appropriately at the top of the order.

However, Hooda had to make way for Kohli once the former India captain returned back to the XI from the second T20I onwards.

Can’t keep performing youngsters out of the team for an out-of-form Virat – Kapil Dev

Calls have intensified arguing for Kohli’s exclusion from the playing XI in the run-up to the World T20 in Australia later this year.

The 33-year-old has averaged 28.92 and 22.73 with strike rates of 119.46 and 115.99 in IPL 2021 and 2022 respectively. He has aggregated 82 runs at a scoring rate of 128.57 in four T20Is in 2022. Accordingly, Kohli’s role in the side has come under scanner especially given the fierce competition for the middle-order spots amongst players like Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson and Hooda.

Cricket News: Rohit: Great Virat Kohli belongs in India's T20I team | Rohit Sharma says Virat Kohli has been great for a decade
Rohit backs Virat: It has been a tough couple of years for Kohli.

Most recently, India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev criticised Kohli’s inclusion in the playing XI amidst his poor run of form. He drew parallels with World No. 2 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin being side-lined from the playing XI and questioned why a similar approach could not be taken with Kohli.

“If he (Virat) is not performing, you cannot continue to keep these boys (youngsters like Deepak Hooda) out. I hope there is a healthy fight for selection, the youngsters should look to outperform Kohli. But Kohli needs to think, ‘Yes at one point I was a big player, but I need to play like that No. 1 player again’. That is a problem for the team, it is not a bad problem.”,” the 63-year-old told ABP News, as reported by the Hindustan Times (HT).

Kapil Dev added, “Virat is not batting at a level which we have seen him do over the years. He has made a name because of his performances but if he isn’t performing, then you can’t keep the performing youngsters out of the team.”

Rohit backs Virat, says you can’t ignore his great contributions

Rohit was addressed with a question over this scathing remark in the press conference after Sunday’s game. The Indian skipper was upfront with his thoughts and expressed complete confidence on Kohli. He implied that people who are watching the game from outside are unaware of “what is happening inside”.

“We build our team and behind this, there is a lot of thinking. We back the boys and give them opportunities. So, these things you do not get to know from outside. So, whatever is happening outside is not important but what is happening inside is more important for us,” Rohit’s comments from a post-match press conference were quoted in a report by the aforementioned publication.

“If you talk about form then everyone goes through ups and downs. The player’s quality does not get affected. So, we should keep these things in our minds. When a player is doing well for so many years, then one or two bad series does not make him a bad player. We should not overlook his past performances. We who are in the team know the importance of the player. They have got all the right to talk about it but it does not matter for us too much,” the captain further opened up on the debate.

Kohli has an average of 76.81 at a strike rate of 129.60 as he has scored 845 runs in 21 games that he has played across four editions of the ICC T20 World Cup from 2012 onwards. He has walked off with the ‘Man of the Tournament’ trophy twice, i.e. in 2014 and 2016.

Also, Kohli has a resounding average of 50.12 at an equally incredible strike rate of 137.66 with 3308 runs across 99 T20Is for India. He is the country’s second-highest run scorer in T20Is, only marginally behind Rohit, who has 3379 runs to his name.

It is undeniable that he is undergoing a rough patch currently. But Kohli has turned up multiple times in the past to win games for India in T20 World Cups. Moreover, the conditions in Australia will require batsmen who are adept at dealing with slightly additional pace and bounce. Kohli has an average of 64.43 to go along with a strike rate of 144.55 along with five half-centuries in 11 T20Is in Australia. Though certain reactions to his current form appear to be natural, Rohit has rightly put his weight behind on the former skipper to come out good eventually.

This Indian team will only advantage from having an in-form Virat Kohli in their ranks in the World T20 this year.
