The great MS Dhoni has put speculation around his future to bed, and confirmed that he will play for and lead the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. Dhoni confirmed this while speaking at the toss in CSK’s final game of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals.
Asked whether he will continue on next season by Ian Bishop, Dhoni replied “definitely”, which is similar to the popular “definitely not” when asked if he was going to retire in 2020.
“It’s a simple reason: it will be unfair to not play in Chennai and say thank you. Mumbai is one place, where as a team and as an individual I have got a lot of love and affection. But it wouldn’t be nice to the CSK fans,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni also spoke of his desire to see matches played at more venues in IPL 2023. With the COVID-19 bubble, the IPL 2022 league stage was restricted to four venues, and the CSK captain spoke of this is a reason why he intends to continue playing.
“Also, hopefully next year there will be an opportunity where the teams will be travelling so it will be a like thank you to all the different places where we will be playing games at different venues,” he said.
“Whether it will be my last year or not that’s a big question because you know we can’t really predict about something two years down the line, but definitely I’ll be working hard to come back strong next year,” he said.

The equation is simple for Rajasthan Royals. Win by any margin and they will secure a top-two finish to go up against Gujarat Titans for a spot in the IPL 2022 Final. With the team finding form in their last match against LSG, combined with poor cricket by Chennai Super Kings, Sanju Samson’s team should be able to achieve this.
However, taking your opponent lightly is never a good idea in the IPL. A team in any position can surprise the other, and the Royals need to be on their game against a Chennai side that could throw caution into the wind.
Such an approach by CSK is not guaranteed, though. They were extremely passive in their last game against Gujarat, where they were unable to even hit a single boundary in the final five overs as they crawled to 133/5. Against a good Royals attack, they cannot afford to be so passive, otherwise it will be a piece of cake for Samson’s team.
In a further boost, the Royals have star finisher Shimron Hetmyer available once again. Also, even as Jos Buttler’s form has cooled down, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal have made a terrific impact in recent matches, and they will be after more of the same.
Jos Buttler has brilliant numbers vs CSK since the start of 2018: 6 inns, 265 runs, avg. 66.25, SR 149.72. Also, Buttler scored a century at Brabourne earlier in IPL 2022.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has top-scored for RR in two of the past three matches (scores of 68, 19 andf 41). Also, Jaiswal smashed a 21-ball 50 against CSK last season.
Sanju Samson averages just 16.08 in 12 innings for RR against CSK (193 runs). However, Samson has failed to reach double figures just twice in 13 matches this season, including eight scores above 20. Can he convert a start into a 50+ score today?
Shimron Hetmyer has smashed 19 sixes in the last five overs of matches in IPL 2022; the most of any player. CSK concede 11.38 per over in this phase.
R Ashwin has been terrific for RR this season. He has taken nine wickets in his past eight matches, and also has four double figure scores with the bat including a fifty.
Ashwin has dismissed Robin Uthappa seven times in 102 balls in the IPL (137 runs). He also has good numbers against Ambati Rayudu: 4/88 off 76 deliveries.
Yuzvendra Chahal is just three wickets away from beating Imran Tahir’s record of 26 wickets in a season by a spinner. He has taken one wicket in every game vs CSK since the start of 2019, and he has six wickets in two matches at Brabourne.
Trent Boult, who was player of the match last game (2/18), will be key up top especially against Ruturaj Gaikwad. Boult has dismissed Gaikwad twice in 18 balls, and the CSK opener struggles against left-arm seam in general: 10 dismissals for 185 runs in 139 balls in the IPL.
Chennai Super Kings
Ruturaj Gaikwad is the only CSK batsman to have at least 300 runs this season (366). The opener has a century against RR, but this is an improved Royals attack.
Devon Conway has made some low scores in recent games, but if he gets past the powerplay, watch out. He has struck 142 runs at a strike rate of 179.74 with just one dismissal in the middle overs.
Can Moeen Ali find his groove? The all-rounder has taken seven wickets in his past four matches at an average of 9.86 and economy rate of 5.83. He took 3/7 vs Royals last season.
Eyes will be on ‘New Malinga’ Matheesha Pathirana. He finished with figures of 3.1-0-24-2 in his first ever IPL match over the weekend. He will be looking to trouble RR’s batting lineup with his unorthodox action.
Mukesh Choudhary has taken the equal-most wickets in the powerplay this season along with Mohammed Shami (11).

This will be the first meeting between the teams this season. Since the start of 2018, both sides have won four matches each head-to-head.
Devdutt Padikkal has struck three 30+ scores in a row (31, 48, 39). He has struck 159 runs in four matches vs CSK at an average of 39.75 and strike rate of 132.50, including one fifty.
Yuzvendra Chahal has dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad three times in four innings.
RR hit a six every 7.6 balls in the final five overs in matches where Shimron Hetmyer was available. When he was out, this balloons up to one six ever 30 balls in the final five overs.

However, their batting has left a lot to be desired, so much so that if Dinesh Karthik, Shahbaz Ahmed and co. weren’t on their game earlier this season, RCB could have been competing with CSK and MI for bottom place.
All that needs to be put behind them ahead of this do-or-die clash. They must beat top-placed Gujarat Titans and hope Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals to qualify (scenarios here), which will require RCB’s batsmen to get runs on the board.
For Gujarat, life is much more comfortable. They sealed a top-two finish with a game to spare, and look the team to beat according to Kevin Pietersen. This game can serve as preparation for their big Qualifier next week, with a focus on their batting too.

Cometh the hour, cometh Virat Kohli. RCB desperately need him to deliver. His only half-century in IPL 2022 came against GT (58), although it did take 53 balls.
Virat has magnificent numbers at the Wankhede: 18 inns, 694 runs, avg. 63.09, SR 153.88.
Faf du Plessis also has excellent numbers on this ground (18 inns, 589 runs, avg. 42.07, SR 131.47), which includes 73* in his last game here vs SRH.
Glenn Maxwell has looked good for most of the season, but hasn’t quite been able to reach the heights he did in 2021. He has scored 228 runs, picked five wickets and taken four catches in IPL 2022, including three 30+ scores in his past four games. He has the highest strike rate (200) against spin of any player in IPL 2022 (min. 50 balls faced).
Dinesh Karthik’s strike rate of 192.56 is the highest out of any player with at least 200 runs this season. His last five scores at the Wankhede read: 30* (8), 66* (34), 44* (23), 25 (24) and 40 (24).
Wanindu Hasaranga took 5/18 in his previous match at the Wankhede (vs SRH). He took 2/28 vs GT earlier this season, part of 23 wickets overall – just one short of current Purple Cap holder Yuzvendra Chahal.
Can Josh Hazlewood bounce back after a horror night (0/64) vs Punjab? He has taken 55 wickets in 36 T20s since the start of 2021.
Gujarat Titans:
Wriddhiman Saha has had a good season (8 inns, 281 runs, avg. 40.14, SR 123.24). He is coming off a 57-ball 67* vs CSK, which was on this ground.
In fact, Saha has four 50+ scores in eight innings at the Wankhede. He has struck a total of 319 runs at an average of 63.80 and strike rate of 142.41.
Shubman Gill does not have the same success at the Wankhede (67 runs, avg. 9.57). However, he does have two fifties in his past three matches in IPL 2022.
Hardik Pandya is in need of runs after scores of 10, 3, 1, 24, 11 and 7 in his past six matches. He has solid numbers against RCB: 14 inns, 236 runs, avg. 33.71, SR 155.26, and is very experienced at the Wankhede: 40 inns, 827 runs, avg. 31.81, SR 134.47.

Expect GT to keep Rashid Khan up their sleeve for Dinesh Karthik. He has dismissed the keeper-batsman three times in 28 balls in T20s, including earlier this season.
Mohammed Shami has not gone wicketless against RCB since 2019 (10 wickets in seven matches). Also, he loves bowling at the Wankhede, with eight wickets in three matches this season and 18 wickets in nine T20s overall.
Also, Shami has the wood over Kohli. He has dismissed the RCB opener five times in 60 balls in the IPL (80 runs), although a couple of those were at the backend of an innings where Kohli was looking to score quickly.

Gujarat (174/4) chased RCB’s (170/4) thanks to a brilliant 79-run stand by Miller and Tewatia at Brabourne.
David Miller smashed a match-winning 39* off 24 balls vs RCB earlier in IPL 2022.
RCB should look to bowl Mohammed Siraj in the middle overs. He concedes just 6.27 runs per over in this phase, compared to 9.80 in the powerplay and 14.75 at the death.

According to Kevin Pietersen, it will be difficult to stop Gujarat Titans in this edition of the IPL. “They manage to find ways to win, from a good, middling or even a bad position. A team which has this winning mentality is very difficult to break,” he wrote in a column for Betway.
Pietersen didn’t expect this side to be at the apex of the points table as they are not the strongest side on paper. Gujarat Titans reminds him of Rajasthan Royals when they won the title under Shane Warne in 2008. They were not the best side on paper but went on to lift the title.
Positive attitude key for Gujarat Titans – Kevin Pietersen
For Pietersen it’s the positive attitude that the team management has inculcated into the players as they’re not inhibited. They’re just execute what feels right instinctively.
“It reminds me of Rajasthan Royals when they won the title under Shane Warne in 2008 – they weren’t the best side on paper but everybody knew what they were doing and they had a great mentality.
When you’re winning like that, the energy in the dressing room is so positive,” Pietersen wrote.
There are two more teams Pietersen expects to see in the playoffs – Rajathan Royals and Delhi Capitals. The Royals have been consistent for the most part, while Delhi are hitting their stride towards the backend of the season.
“Rajasthan Royals are going really well, too, while I expect Delhi Capitals, with all of their experience, to make a good push for the top four.
Those three teams are my favourites to win the competition,” wrote KP.
Pietersen opines that wrist spin is crucial in this IPL
Pietersen says that the commentators are full of praise for the hard, bouncy wickets as they allow for lots of runs and entertaining games.
However, according to Pietersen, if there is one thing that spinners love it’s bounce, so it’s not a surprise that spin is having such a big say in IPL 2022.
“The top two wicket-takers in the competition are spinners – and it’s really heartening to see Kuldeep Yadav, such an exciting talent, going well along with Yuzvendra Chahal,” Pietersen said.
“Orthodox spinners can be easier to line up, but mystery wrist spinners like Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal are so difficult to play.”
Stokes is one of several appointments England must get right – Pietersen
Pietersen opined that being appointed as England Test captain is an incredible honour. Ben Stokes and his family would be incredibly proud of the southpaw.
Kevin is a firm believer that the England team needs a leadership group with some gravitas and personality.
“I enjoyed hearing Rob Key talking about getting the best coaching system in place to change the mentality of the team. It’s been so doom and gloom, the cricket’s been poor and the results have been rubbish. The whole thing needs a shake-up,” said KP.
Pietersen rightly stated that Stokes has the personality to captain the side, and personally he would prefer Graham Ford to come in as Test coach to complete the brain trust. However, Brendon McCullum was offered the role which has been accepted.

Also, net run rate is an issue for KKR. Shreyas Iyer’s team is on +0.160 compared to Delhi’s +0.255. DC still have to play against Mumbai, so KKR need to put the pressure on with a good performance today.
Also in need of a good performance is Lucknow Super Giants. KL Rahul’s team have lost their last two matches, with the batting in the spotlight. The skipper himself is averaging just 23 with a strike rate of 117 against teams other than Mumbai Indians, so the onus is on him to set the tone. In addition, LSG’s batsmen from numbers 3-6 are averaging just 21.88, so today is an opportunity to build confidence in the quest for a top-two finish.

Shreyas Iyer has crossed double figures 11 times in 13 games this season. This includes six 25+ scores, but has crossed 50 just twice. Today would be a great day for the KKR captain to deliver.
Nitish Rana (26 off 16) and Sam Billings (34 off 29) played well in the last game vs SRH. Rana is striking at 150 vs spin this season (147 off 96 balls), but has been dismissed four times. However, LSG have a four-man pace attack to contend with.
Umesh Yadav is the second-most economical pacer in IPL 2022 (min. 15 overs) with an economy of just 6.9. He has taken eight wickets in the powerplay and has conceded just 6.1 per over in this phase.
Tim Southee is the third-most economical pacer in IPL 2022 (min. 15 overs). He took 1/28 against LSG earlier this season, where he was particularly good at the death. He dismissed Jason Holder.
Also, Southee has been excellent at DY Patil, with seven wickets in three matches at an economy rate of 4.9.

KL Rahul has scored just 101 runs in his last five innings at an average of 20.20 and strike rate of 104.12, with scores of 0, 8 and 10 in his past three outings. He does have good numbers vs KKR’s key bowlers: 60 off 49 vs Umesh (one dismissal), 116 off 90 vs Southee (two dismissals), 48 off 24 vs Russell (no dismissal), and 131 off 72 vs Narine (two dismissals).
Rahul has struck five 50+ scores in 12 innings vs KKR. His overall numbers vs KKR: 383 runs, avg. 34.82, SR 138.77.
Quinton de Kock scored 50 off 29 balls against KKR earlier this season. He has struck 49 off 35 balls against Umesh (one dismissal) in the IPL.
Deepak Hooda is in fine touch. He has struck scores of 59, 27, 41, 52 and 34 in his past five matches. Also, he is now the fifth-highest scorer this season with 406 runs in 13 matches.
Marcus Stoinis has been striking the ball well. He has scored 28 (14), 2 (run out) and 27 (17) in his last three knocks. In fact, LSG have the best run rate in the death overs this season (11.30).

Tilak Varma’s 368 runs is the most runs ever by a teenager in a single IPL season. He is averaging 40.88 and striking at 132.85, including 189 runs vs spin at a strike rate of 147.65 with just one dismissal.
Ishan Kishan has a score of 84 against SRH, but averages just 26.57 in seven innings against them. Also, he has a poor record at the Wankhede, with 248 runs in 14 innings at an average of 17.71. Can he turn this around?
Is this the day Rohit Sharma gets his first 50+ score of the year? He is always capable, but he has a poor record vs SRH: 18 inns, 277 runs, avg. 18.47, SR 124.22.
However, Rohit is the only player with at least 2,000 T20 runs at the Wankhede. He averages 35.23 and strikes at 134.77.
Daniel Sams has had a terrific comeback after a bad start to the season. He has taken 10 wickets in the past six matches, and has been among the top fantasy players in five of these games.

Aiden Markram is SRH’s second-highest run-scorer this season, with 358 runs in 10 innings at a superb average of 59.11 and strike rate of 141.50. This includes scores of 56 and 21 at the Wankhede.
Also, SRH could look to use Markram with the ball with a few left-handers in the MI lineup.

Cricket News: IPL ratings down 35% in 2022 compared to 2021 – Report | Ratings for the IPL have dropped in 2022 according to figures
The Indian Premier League (IPL) ratings have dropped by up to 35% from 2021 according to the latest figures. According to Financial Express, the TV viewership across age groups fell by over 30% in the first three weeks of the season, and has continued to slide a little further as the season nears its playoffs phase.
IPL 2022 is the first instance of a 10-team IPL since the 2011 season. As a result, the season is now 75 matches long instead of the usual 60, and also drags out to two months. Also, the poor performances of linchpins Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are said to be contributing to the waning numbers, as have the performances of the out of form Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and co.
Also, IPL 2022 closes out what seems like a year of IPL action after the 2021 season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then restarted in the UAE in September/October. The T20 World Cup followed days later, and before you know it, IPL 2022 was underway, giving fans a significant amount of T20 cricket to consume.
CSK and MI have struggled in 2022 compared to other seasons.
IPL ratings down: IPL becoming a ‘fatigued product’
Sandeep Goyal, Managing Director of Rediffusion Brand Solutions, said that there is the possibility of viewer fatigue given the amount of T20 cricket fans are exposed to.
“With a higher count of teams, the match count from 60 in IPL 2021 has now jumped to 75. Viewers are now jaded due to more matches, with their favourite teams not performing well,” said Gopal, referring to CSK and MI as the two major teams who have struggled this season.
Also, it needs to be considered that viewership numbers over the past two years were influenced by pandemic-induced lockdowns. In 2020, the IPL was originally postponed from its usual March-May slot until September, which saw a 28% increase in viewership after fans were starved of cricket for months. This time in 2021, India was in hard lockdown, with people confined to their homes. The IPL gave them something to watch.
“The year 2021 was an outlier in terms of consumer behaviour. The lockdowns dramatically increased viewership patterns across media, and a return to some kind of normalcy was always likely,” said Kavita Shenoy, founder and CEO of Voiro.
IPL which is the most popular sporting league in the world has seen a 33 percent decline in TV ratings from IPL 2021.

Some fans bemoaned the culture of promoting one sport while degrading another, while others believed more should be done to make as many cricket matches as relevant as possible.
Part of that is the IPL, whose brand is at risk if the BCCI continues to stretch out the season. Too much of something is never a good idea, and the IPL takes up more than enough of the cricketing calendar as is. Also, the notion of less is more can create that extra demand for matches going forward.
IPL will lose its brand value if they stretch this league further. The ratings have already gone down this season…

Australia and the cricketing world is in mourning once again after the shock passing of champion all-rounder Andrew Symonds. Symonds passed away after a car accident outside Townsville in Queensland on Saturday night, barely two months after the cricketing fraternity was left shocked and saddened following the passing of Rod Marsh and Shane Warne.
The 46-year old was a much-loved character. People close to him described him as a larrikin and a cult figure, and his loss will be felt for years to come.
Symonds, affectionately known as ‘Roy’, helped revolutionise the role of a middle order all-rounder in white-ball cricket. He played 198 ODIs for Australia, striking 5,088 runs at an average of nearly 40 and strike rate of 92.55, along with 133 wickets. This includes 515 runs in 13 World Cup innings at a superb average of 103.00. He was also magnificent in the field, with a number of superb run outs and catches throughout his career.
Symonds was also more than handy in the longest format. He played 26 Tests, scoring 1462 runs at 40.61 and picking up 24 wickets with his off-spin and medium-pace bowling.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Australia Prime Minister were among the millions who paid tribute to the all-rounder. Palaszczuk shared her “deep condolences” to Symonds’ family and described him as “an outstanding player – dynamic, entertaining and skilful – who made an unforgettable contribution to Queensland and Australian cricket”.
Prime Minister Morrison said, “Just awful to hear the news of the passing of Andrew Symonds. Roy was an incredible talent and a great character of Australian sport. Loved by his teammates and fans alike, he will be sorely missed by many. My condolences to his family, friends and the cricket community.”

The stakes are high and pressure is immense for these two teams, and the winner will no doubt benefit from triumphing in such a situation. Both Mayank Agarwal’s and Rishabh Pant’s men come into this game off respective victories, which should see confidence at a high in both camps. However, and crucially, neither team has won consecutive matches in IPL 2022, so who will it be that casts this record aside?
If PBKS’ dynamic English duo of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone fire again, they will be mighty tough to beat. But, DC’s Aussie duo David Warner and the firing Mitch Marsh might have something to say about that. In terms of the bowling, both sides have had their struggles at times, but now seem to be settling into some rhythm. One bad over can swing the game in either team’s favour, so the team that holds their nerve in the crunch stages is likely to reign supreme.
With their experience in recent years, DC look well-placed to mount a strong challenge. However, PBKS’ fearless attitude can hold them in good stead. And, they will need to put any past demons behind them, especially the fact they were rolled for 115 and lost with 57 deliveries to spare against Delhi earlier this season. It is indeed the perfect time to gain some revenge.

Liam Livingstone is among the top 10 run-scorers in IPL 2022 (385) and has the best strike rate (180.75) among those players. He has smashed 109 runs in three matches at the DY Patil for one dismissal and a strike rate of 205.66.
Shikhar Dhawan is PBKS’ leading run-scorer this season (402). However, he will want to improve on his middling record at the DY Patil: 8 inns, 162 runs, avg. 23.14, SR 108.00.
Kagiso Rabada continues to amaze. He is on track to becoming the fastest to 100 IPL wickets, as he has 97 scalps in just 61 matches (current fastest is Malinga in 70 matches). He is the top wicket-taker among pacers this season (21), with nine coming in the powerplay and eight at the death.
Rabada vs Warner will be a huge battle. The pacer has dismissed the opener five times in 83 balls in all T20s, but Warner has scored 124 runs.
Arshdeep Singh has taken four wickets in his past three games. More impressive is the fact that he has conceded just five sixes in 42 overs in IPL 2022. This is the lowest among bowlers who have sent down at least 35 overs.
Delhi Capitals:
PBKS desperately need David Warner’s wicket early. The Aussie opener has a magnificent record against Punjab, with 12 50+ scores in 22 innings, including a thumping 30-ball 60* earlier this season.
Overall, Warner has struck 1,005 runs at an average of 52.89 and strike rate of 142.35 vs Punjab.
Mitch Marsh has got going. He won player of the match vs RR with 89 off 62 balls and 2 for 25. Since the beginning of 2021, Marsh has struck 1,369 runs in 43 innings at an average of 40.27 and strike rate of 138.28.
Rishabh Pant has struck nine double-figure scores in 11 innings this season, including seven above 25 (total of 294 runs at an average of 32.66 and strike rate of 156.38). Can he cross 50 today if he gets the chance?
Pant needs to improve on his numbers vs PBKS: 11 inns, 173 runs, avg. 17.30, SR 117.69.
DC may be tempted to give Kuldeep Yadav an over in the powerplay. Their leading wicket-taker (18) has dismissed Dhawan twice in 37 balls in the IPL, whilst only conceding 34.
Axar Patel took 2/10 in four overs against PBKS earlier this season. He didn’t concede a single boundary in that innings.
Anrich Nortje has taken five wickets in his past two matches. However, he has been on more of the expensive side (3/42 and 2/39), so DC will be hoping he can bring that economy rate down.
