Cricket News: KL Rahul divides opinion: Is his batting fine or too slow? | Twitter Is Divided On KL Rahul’s Knock In The Eliminator
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) crashed out of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after a narrow defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Skipper KL Rahul’s innings of 79 runs off 58 deliveries came under the scanner as the 30-year-old was unable to close the game out for LSG despite playing a fine knock under pressure.
Several prominent figures have put forth divisive opinions on Rahul’s approach in the innings. Chasing 208, LSG scored only 49 runs between the 7th-13th over, and in the end, Rahul faced nearly half of LSG’s overs to muster 79.
The likes of Shahbaz Ahmed and Harshal Patel managed to put the brakes on LSG’s innings and it left them with too much to chase towards the fag end of the game.
KL Rahul showed incredible prowess in clearing the boundaries at will, whenever he wanted, which brought about calls about his strike rate being too slow. He displayed a wide repertoire of skillsets and even pulled off some innovative strokes to get the desired results at times.
But Harshal’s terrific 18th over and an equally good follow up by Josh Hazlewood in the 19th meant that he got dismissed trying out a cheeky lap over fine-leg with 10 balls remaining.
The LSG skipper maintained a strike rate of 136.21 in a chase where his team had to score over 10 runs per over. Though his approach was justified by the time he stayed at the crease, Lucknow would have ideally wanted their captain to get them over the finishing line eventually.
Both he and Hooda were visibly struggling to get the scoring rate up in the middle overs. It is arguable that the track would have slowed down given that this was the fourth innings being played on the pitch as the Qualifier 1 was played on the same strip just a day before.
Moreover, the RCB bowlers hardly gave away too much for LSG to play with and made sure that they came back strongly even after a poor over or so.
“KL Rahul himself has the ability to do that. You see every time he decided to play the big shot, it came off. He played a couple of terrific shots against [Josh] Hazelwood. He can do it when he wants to but he just has this very deep-rooted belief, or an attitude, or an approach, that he wants to bat longer rather than quicker.

On that note, Rahul’s strategy of holding his strike till the end and backing himself to finish off the game, especially with brute power hitters like Marcus Stoinis and Evin Lewis waiting in the wings, was justified. In the end, it is only a game of perspectives and the mass opinion would have been starkly different had KL gotten the job done on Tuesday. Regardless of that, let us take a look at some of the notable reactions on his innings on Twitter.
Too slow or right approach? Some of the reactions to KL Rahul innings vs RCB
“Yes, I think now, looking back, yes, it was just about two big hits in the middle overs and that could have gotten us over the line,” KL Rahul reflected back on the team’s performance at the end of the game.
Do you think that the opener needs to remodel his batting approach in the T20 format? Or do you believe that people are being too harsh on him given that Lucknow missed out on a victory by a very fine margin? Let us know by tagging @CricBlog on Twitter!
