CPL 2020 Match 9: TKR vs BT Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report

CPL 2020 Match 9: TKR vs BT Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | TKR vs BT Dream11 Prediction Today | Trinbago Knight Riders vs Barbados Tridents Key Players | Tarouba Pitch Report

The defending champions Barbados Tridents will lock horns with the Trinbago Knight Riders in what has the potential to be a blockbuster clash. TKR is the table toppers with two wins from two games, while Barbados is fifth with one win and one defeat.

The Trinbago Knight Riders are in excellent form with both bat and ball. Their bowling, which doesn’t look that great in the death overs on paper, has performed well so far. Jayden Seales and Ali Khan have given outstanding performances with Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, and Fawad Ahmed also contributing. Sunil Narine in particular has been outstanding; he has scored 103 runs in two games, striking at 156.06, along with three wickets at an economy rate of just 4.75.

With Colin Munro also in good touch, the final piece of the top order puzzle for TKR would be for Lendl Simmons to find form. Skipper Kieron Pollard and DJ Bravo haven’t got many chances but you expect them to perform when needed. Also, Darren Bravo played a good knock in the first game and took them over the line with some late finish along with his brother DJ.

Barbados Tridents are having some problems in the batting department due to the unavailability of some of their star batters because of COVID-19. They are losing wickets in clusters towards the back end of the innings. Johnson Charles played aggressively in the last game, but they’ll want Shai Hope, Corey Anderson, and Jonathan Carter to step up in this game.

Captain Jason Holder, batting at five, can work wonders with a good platform as he has played nicely in both games. However, will BT look to send Rashid Khan higher up the batting order (i.e. 6 or 7), as 10 is too low? It will be a big test for the Tridents bowlers against TKR, so the batsmen need to deliver.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • The Bravo brothers are leading the batting charts in TKR vs BT games. DJ Bravo has 260 runs which is the highest, followed by 247 runs from Darren Bravo.
  • Colin Munro has 185 runs against the Tridents. Also, he has started CPL 2020 in promising fashion with 66 runs in two games, including an unbeaten 49 last game against Jamaica Tallawahs.
  • Lendl Simmons has had a slow start to CPL 2020 (0 and 17). However, could this be the game he fires? He scored 430 runs in 2019 (second-most).
  • Johnson Charles has 148 runs against the Knight Riders. He averages 49.33 against them. His scores were 35, 55, and 58 against TKR in 2019.
  • Sunil Narine, who is in great form with the bat, strikes at 169.51 against Barbados. Also, Narine has hit back-to-back fifties in CPL 2020, striking at 156.06.
  • Dwayne Bravo is leading the bowling charts as well with 14 wickets when these two sides play.
  • Jason Holder has 11 wickets against TKR. An important player for his team with both bat and ball.
  • Hayden Walsh Jr. has nine wickets against TKR, including a five-for.
  • Ashley Nurse blasted 24 off 9 and took two wickets against TKR in the 2019 Qualifier 2. Can he impact this game?
  • Raymon Reifer and Fawad Ahmed have five wickets each against each other’s teams.

Both sides have played well but Trinbago is the favorites in this match. Barbados’ batters will need to step up and provide a good score for their bowlers to defend. As mentioned above, TKR likes to chase and Barbados is known for defending totals. So, we are in for a great contest between Tridents bowling and TKR’s batting.

Sarfaraz, Fakhar and Amir in Pakistan’s T20I squad

Pakistan have named their 17-man T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series against England. There are a few notable recalls in the squad, namely Sarfaraz Ahmed, Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Amir.

Sarfaraz Ahmed returns to the T20I squad for the first time after losing the captaincy last year. Fakhar Zaman, who scored 246 runs in PSL 2020 (fifth most among Pakistani players), is also back in the setup. As is Mohammad Amir, who will be out to win management over after they previously weren’t thrilled by his decision to retire from Test cricket.

Sarfaraz, Fakhar and Amir in Pakistan's T20I squad | Pakistan announce T20I squad to face England in three-match series | Pakistan squad
Fakhar Zaman is in Pakistan’s T20I squad

Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, who were picked for the Bangladesh series in January 2020, have been retained. Coach Misbah-ul-Haq says this is the most settled Pakistan have looked in quite some time, after previously giving fringe players a chance to redeem themselves and impress. Players like Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Irfan and Usman Qadir were given the chance to repay the faith, but have now been dropped.

Pakistan have also included youngsters Haider Ali and Naseem Shah, which excites coach Misbah.

“This is mostly the same team which has been featuring in the shortest format for us,” Misbah said. “Besides retaining the core, we have inducted youngsters like Haider Ali, who has performed well in the HBL PSL, U-19 and first-class cricket, and Naseem Shah as we had an opportunity to keep a bigger pool due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which also increases our options. Our two experienced bowlers in Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz have also returned to the side, along with Fakhar Zaman and Sarfaraz Ahmed.”

Also, Misbah stated that being in the COVID-19 bubble has allowed management to help with the development of players within the T20I squad, as they have had to arrive in England much earlier than they normally would.

“Usually, the T20I team comes together for a brief period but due to the current situation most of the players have been here with us for more than a month and it has provided us a good opportunity to work on the development of the team and the young players. So, even the players who might not get an opportunity to play will benefit from the experience they are getting here.

“It is going to be a competitive series as England are a strong side. We are looking forward to play good cricket and win the series.”

Babar Azam will lead the Pakistan side in the three-match series against England, which starts on August 28. They will be out to improve, after winning just three of 11 completed T20Is since the start of 2019. As a result, they have dropped from first to fourth in the T20I team rankings.

Pakistan T20I squad:

Babar Azam (c), Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz

England vs Pakistan T20I series schedule:

  • 1st T20I: August 28, Old Trafford, Manchester
  • 2nd T20I: August 30, Old Trafford, Manchester
  • 3rd T20I: September 1, Old Trafford, Manchester

Lasith Malinga set to miss early part of IPL 2020

Lasith Malinga, one of the all-time great T20 bowlers, will miss the early parts of IPL 2020.

Malinga will not travel to the UAE with the Mumbai Indians squad. According to ESPNCricinfo, Malinga’s father has been ill, and could require surgery in the coming weeks. The Sri Lankan fast bowling great wishes to be with his father during this period.

Another factor that could have influenced Malinga’s decision is the 14-day quarantine protocols for anyone entering Sri Lanka. So, if Malinga had flown to the UAE and then decided he wanted to travel back to Sri Lanka to be with his father, he would have not been able to be by his side due to the quarantine requirements.

Malinga will be staying in Colombo, where he will also be training to ensure he remains as fit as possible. The consensus is that he will be available for Mumbai Indians in the backend of the tournament, including the playoffs, should they qualify. His experience will be invaluable, which was most on show in a terrific final over in a classic IPL 2019 Final, where he defended eight off the final over.

Lasith Malinga was one of the clutch players for MI in the IPL 2019 Final

Despite the loss of Malinga for the initial stages of the tournament, Mumbai Indians have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to their pace department. They can turn to a number of other capable pace bowling options, namely Jasprit Bumrah, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan, Dhawal Kulkarni, and allrounders Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. It is Mumbai Indians’ depth that separates them from other IPL teams.

The IPL is yet to release the official fixtures for the tournament, which is pencilled in to begin on September 19. However, it is believed that the Mumbai Indians will face rivals Chennai Super Kings in their first match.

The CPL returns to action on Saturday after an off-day on Friday as the Guyana Amazon Warriors take on the Jamaica Tallawahs in the second encounter of the day.

Both the teams have played two matches a piece, with one win each and defeats against the Trinbago Knight Riders. While the Guyana Amazon Warriors lost the inaugural match of the tournament against the Trinbago Knight Riders, Jamaica Tallawahs came out victorious against the Zouks. However, the teams again had contrasting results in their second games.

The Warriors will be looking to build on the momentum from the match against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots where they restricted their opponents to a paltry total and then chased down the target of 129 with ease. Two-time champions Tallawahs also won their match while chasing but were in trouble as they were put into bat first by the Trinbago Knight Riders. They could also manage 135 and TKR chased the target with little less than two overs to spare.

Key Players to Watch/Stats

  • Andre Russell: Surprisingly the big Jamaican has looked out of sorts in the two games so far and will be looking to finally get going against the Warriors. He has scored 41 runs in two innings, but is striking below 100.
  • Shimron Hetmyer is the leading run getter of CPL 2020 with 134 runs so far. He scored a half century in both matches (63* off 44 balls & 71 off 44 balls).
  • Glenn Phillips has been impressive in with a half century and 42 in the first two games and will be one to watch out for. He is striking at 143.66 so far in CPL 2020.
  • Nicholas Pooran has been quiet so far. However, he has it in him to deliver, and the Warriors will hope that he fires and sets the ball rolling for the rest of the tournament. Similar applies to Brandon King, who was the top scorer in CPL 2019 (496 runs).
  • Asif Ali was man of the match in the Tallawahs’ first game in CPL 2020 with 47* off 27 balls. He is one to watch.
  • Imran Tahir was economical in the previous game with only 18 runs from his 4 over spell and against the power hitters of the Tallawahs which includes Phillips, Ali and Russell, he holds the key.
  • Keemo Paul is coming off 4/19 in his last game. He is a proven wicket-taker in T20 cricket, with 56 in 52 matches.
  • Mujeeb ur Rahman so far in CPL 2020: 2/25 and 1/13.

CPL 2020 Match 8: Can Shimron Hetmyer continue

Stats and Facts

  • Guyana Amazon Warriors have won 5 out of their last 6 matches against Jamaica Tallawahs.
  • Shimron Hetmyer scored a century against the Tallawahs in CPL 2019.
  • Warriors have faced the Tallawahs at Tarouba only once and that encounter was way back in 2017. GAW was victorious in the encounter.

Tarouba Pitch Report and Conditions

The Brian Lara Cricket Stadium will be hosting its 8th game and most of the games have been on one track. The tracks have slowed down and spinners from both teams will play a crucial role. However, the team chasing has enjoyed the most success due to the dew, so expect the team who wins the toss to bowl first.

There is a chance of thunderstorms in Trinidad throughout the day, but should hopefully clear for this one.

Possible Playing 11

Both the team’s performers have been inconsistent, barring a few. So it is unlikely that there will be any major changes early in the tournament, unless there are any forced ones.

Jamaican Tallawahs Squad: Andre Russell, Sandeep Lamichhane, Rovman Powell, Glenn Phillips, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Asif Ali, Chadwick Walton, Fidel Edwards, Oshane Thomas, Ramaal Lewis, Veerasammy Permaul, Nicholas Kirton, Jermaine Blackwood, Ryan Persaud, Preston McSween, Nkrumah Bonner.

The seventh match of CPL 2020 will be played between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and St. Lucia Zouks. The Patriots are yet to open their account in the points table after two games, while the Zouks have won one and lost one. So, which team can get a confidence-boosting win?

St. Lucia Zouks won their last game against Barbados Tridents, chasing 47 in five overs after rain. Mohammad Nabi and Andre Fletcher took them over the line, after a good performance with the ball.

However, despite winning the last game, there are a few areas where the Zouks will want to improve. Their middle-order batting still looks a bit inconsistent, and will want Mark Deyal, who looked very promising in the first game, to put another good effort. Also, Roston Chase performed with the bat in the first game and with the ball in the second, with Darren Sammy a good chance to bat higher up to provide some stability. They have done well till now with the resources available and would surely want to continue on.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, on the other hand, need their batters to step up and assist their bowling. Ben Dunk has performed consistently with both the openers failing to score after getting starts. The likes of Ewin Lewis and Chris Lynn must capitalize on the starts they are getting and have to bat through as batting depth is their biggest problem.

Their bowling has been solid with skipper Rayad Emrit and Sheldon Cottrell amongst the wickets in both games. Also, watch out for Dominic Drakes, who performed well in the last game.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Evin Lewis most runs in Patriots vs Zouks games with 263. He strikes at 166.46 and averages 32.88 against St. Lucia. He scored 65 (30) against them in CPL 2019.
  • Andre Fletcher is second after Lewis with 234 runs, striking at 132.20 and averaging 29.25.
  • Rahkeem Cornwall is getting starts but failing to build on them. Can he get going in this game?
  • Rayad Emrit and  Sheldon Cottrell are performing consistently and are expected to do the same in this game. Emrit has taken five wickets in two games, and Cottrell three wickets.
  • Evin Lewis and Chris Lynn must target the new ball attack of the Zouks. Both have a crucial role to play in getting the Patriots right into the game. This is the game they must deliver, as the Patriots have lost two games.
  • Roston Chase in CPL 2020 so far: 52 and 2/8.
  • Darren Sammy needs to bat high up the order. He has 129 runs against the Zouks at a strike rate of 131.63.
  • Ben Dunk so far in CPL 2020: 34 (21) and 29 (24). Can he carry on?
  • Dinesh Ramdin has 146 runs against St. Lucia. He averages 48 against them. The Patriots will want him to fire in this game.
  • Expect Kesrick Williams to have a say in the wickets column. He has 119 wickets in 89 T20s, including three in two games so far in CPL 2020.

Two of South Africa’s men’s cricket players test positive to COVID-19

Cricket South Africa (CSA), in a press release on Thursday, have stated that two South Africa men’s players have tested positive to COVID-19.

CSA did not name the two players. This news comes as a concern, as 50 tests on players and staff were undertaken before a scheduled culture camp in Skukuza from August 18 to 22. As a result, the two players will isolate as necessary, therefore, understandably, missing the camp.

However, the two players will join the training virtually, highlighting the importance of this camp. The purpose of the camp is to educate players and staff of the team’s ideal identity, in an environment where there is increasing racial polarisation in South African cricket.

“The testing is in line with fulfilling the organisation’s obligation and commitment to control the spread of the virus,” the CSA statement said. “There were no replacements made for the two players who tested positive. All those unable to attend the camp will join the proceedings virtually.”

CSA faced similar issues back in July, before the women’s team’s training camp. Three tested positive out of 34, which forced CSA to take further care in ensuring the spread of the virus was controlled. CSA will continue to work towards controlling the spread of the virus, as South Africa, like the rest of the world, continues to battle with COVID-19.

The following players were pencilled in to participate in the camp (before the news of the COVID-19 positive tests): Aiden Markram, Andile Phehlukwayo, Anrich Nortje, Beuran Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Daryn Dupavillon, David Miller, Dean Elgar, Dwaine Pretorius, George Linde, Glenton Stuurman, Heinrich Klaasen, Janneman Malan, Jon-Jon Smuts, Junior Dala, Kagiso Rabada, Keegan Petersen, Keshav Maharaj, Kyle Verryenne, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Pieter Malan, Pite Van Biljon, Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, Reeza Hendricks, Rudi Second, Senuran Muthusamy, Sisanda Magala, Tabraiz Shamsi, Temba Bavuma, Zubayr Hamza.

Faf du Plessis was due to miss the camp due to the birth of his second child.

Marnus Labuschagne working on death batting and legspin

Marnus Labuschagne, Australia’s newest Test sensation, is seeking to build further on his ODI game.

Labuschagne, who has enjoyed an incredible run of form since replacing Steve Smith at Lord’s last year, is not content to simply stay put. As cricket came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Labuschagne has spent more time working on how he can improve in ODI cricket, after a promising start to his career that included an emotional century at Potchefstroom earlier this year.

“It doesn’t matter what the format is; you want to get better,” he told reporters in Brisbane. “There are some areas in one-day cricket where I’m continuing to develop: my bowling and making sure I get a bit more consistent, so I become a better option for the skipper in the middle overs and, with my batting at the death – I want to keep working on that. So it’s been nice to have five months to be able to work on those skills, where if I’d been playing cricket you might not have had the opportunity. It’s all about using the time wisely. Hopefully that’s the way it comes across.”

Labuschagne is part Australia’s 21-man squad for the upcoming England tour. Coming up against the world champions is a great test for Australia and Labuschagne in particular, as the Aussies look for more options in the middle overs.

“That’s what this pre-season has been about, making sure I prepare, improving those areas I needed to to take my game to the next level. I had a really good summer but you want to be better than that, I want to go one better, so making sure you are using this time wisely,” continued Labuschagne.

Australia’s tour of England begins with three T20Is, starting on September 4. A three-match ODI series will follow, starting on September 11. Labuschagne is expected to play a key role for Australia in the ODIs coming in at number four, along with contributing with a few overs. If he can add greater dynamacy to his game, Australia could have an excellent ODI asset on their hands.

Australia’s ODI series against England will be part of the ODI Super League.

England vs Australia tour schedule:

September 4: 1st T20I, Ageas Bowl, Southampton

September 6: 2nd T20I, Ageas Bowl, Southampton

September 8: 3rd T20I, Ageas Bowl, Southampton

September 11: 1st ODI, Old Trafford, Manchester

September 13: 2nd ODI, Old Trafford, Manchester

CPL 2020 Match 6: JKR vs JT Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | TKR vs JT Dream11 Prediction Today | Trinbago Knight Riders vs Jamaica Tallawahs Key Players | Tarouba Pitch Report

The biggest part in sport, as the CPL is often called, has well and truly begun with all the teams kicking off their campaign. The first round of matches spung a few surprises and there were some certain events that took place as well as the tournament gathers momentum.

Jamaica Tallawahs will take on Trinbago Knight Riders and both teams began their campaign on a winning note. TKR, the 3-time champions, played a rain affected 17-over clash, but chased their target with relative ease against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, while Jamaica Tallawahs grabbed their first win vs the St Lucia Zouks in similar fashion.

The Tallawahs restricted their opponents at 158, as they kept striking at regular intervals, with two wickets a piece for Mujeeb and Permaul. Lamichhane bowled an economical spell of four overs in which he conceded at under 6 RPO. The bowlers will be expected to keep up the good work, while more will be expected of Russell and Brathwaite. Then, fine knocks by Glenn Phillips, Rovman Powell and Asif Ali powered them to victory as they chased the total with 7 balls to spare.

On the other hand, the tournament’s most successful franchise also chased down the target as Narine attacked the spinners. The Knight Riders will hope that he can do the same against duo of Lamichhane and Mujeeb ur Rahman. Among the bowlers, Narine was the only economical bowler and the Pollard-led side will hope that Bravo and Jayden Seales have a better economy rate than the first game.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Sunil Narine was the man of the match in the first game (50* and 2/19) and it will be interesting to see how his battle against the power hitting JT batting line-up pans out.
  • Andre Russell is the 2nd highest run getter with 490 runs and the highest wicket taker picking 20 wickets in the matches between these two sides.
  • Lendl Simmons was the second-highest run-scorer in CPL 2019: 430 runs, avg. 39.09, SR 150.34.
  • Asif Ali was player of the match in the Tallawahs’ opening match, courtesy of a superb 47* off 27 balls. Can he back up that great effort with another?
  • Dwayne Bravo looked a bit rusty in the first match but against the Tallawahs he will be a crucial element for his team.
  • Colin Munro has scored 401 runs against the Tallawahs and is the 2nd highest run getter in the clash between these two sides.
  • Glenn Phillips scored a 62 off 32 balls the last time these two teams met.
  • Mujeeb ur Rahman, who took 2/25 last game, will be key in both restricting the run rate and taking wickets.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 16, Jamaica 9, Trinbago 7.
  • The Knight Riders have been victorious in their past three games against the Tallawahs.
  • The last time these two sides met , TKR posted 267 on the board with fifties from Simmons and Munro, plus a cameo from Pollard. The Tallawahs in reply posted 227, with a half century from Phillips.

Match Prediction

The Jamaica Tallawahs and the Knight Riders both won their opening matches with relative ease. Both of them chased down their total and hence the toss will be crucial to decide the winner of the clash. But given how things stand, TKR will fancy their chances against Tallawahs who are reliant on their middle order for results unlike their opponents who have a great team.

The fifth match of the biggest party in sports will be played between the defending champions Barbados Tridents and St. Lucia Zouks.

Barbados Tridents look the superior side, but as was the case in their opening game, nothing can be taken for granted. In addition to excellent batting depth (Rashid Khan came in at 10 last game), they have a phenomenal bowling attack, especially spin bowling. The likes of Rashid Khan, Mitch Santner, Ashley Nurse, and Hayden Walsh Jr. can wreak havoc on these pitches. Jason Holder and Raymon Reifer are the fast bowlers with Kyle Mayors assisting them.

St. Lucia Zouks, on the other hand, need their big players to perform if they have to do well and qualify for the play-offs. Their first-up defeat was heartbreaking in a way, as the backend of each innings cost them. Andre Fletcher, Rahkeem Cornwall, Mohammad Nabi, Darren Sammy, and Najibullah Zadran have to produce, as the unavailability of some of their players due to the COVID-19 has affected them badly.

They have a very good opening duo in Fletcher and Cornwall, who can go bonkers in the powerplay. Nabi, Zadran, and Sammy will form the middle order with one or two youngsters. Death bowling and lack of variety in the spin department is an issue they need to overcome; Kesrick Williams and Obed McCoy will have to perform well in the death overs.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Rahkeem Cornwall strikes at 182.14 and averages 38.25 against the Tridents. He’ll be very dangerous in the powerplay.
  • Andre Fletcher has the most runs in Barbados-St. Lucia matches. He has scored 428 runs.

  • Obed McCoy has picked up eight wickets against Barbados.
  • Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran will be very important for the Zouks, especially towards the backend of the innings.
  • Can Roston Chase build on his solid 52 in Zouks’ first game?
  • Raymon Reifer went wicketless in the last game but is a proven wicket-taker in the CPL.
  • Watch out for Rashid Khan’s all-round ability. His 26* off 20 balls and 2/27 played a crucial role in Barbados’ first win.
  • Mitchell Santner (4-1-18-2) was man-of-the-match in Barbados’ opening game.
  • Hayden Walsh Jr was the top wicket-taker in CPL 2019 (22).

ENG vs PAK 3rd Test Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report

ENG vs PAK 3rd Test Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | ENG vs PAK 3rd Test Dream11 Prediction Today | England vs Pakistan 3rd Test Dream11 | ENG vs PAK 3rd Test Key Players | Southampton Pitch Report

Southampton, take two. After endless frustration right throughout the second Test, Southampton hosts the third Test, this time with the hope that rain will relent long enough for a result.

All the frustation makes England’s superb counterattack seem like quite a while ago. As a result, the England players, whom many have played all Tests so far this summer, had a decent break between the first Test and the third. So, after rain lashed the Ageas Bowl in the past week or so, will it be England who can seal this series win and continue their push towards Australia and India on the World Test Championship table?

The possibility of a series win for Pakistan is now gone. It could have been so different had it not been for two poor sessions Old Trafford, but they come into this third Test on the back of encouraging signs in this series to date. Mohammad Rizwan’s runs is a welcome boost, as is the confidence that Mohammad Abbas and the Pakistani attack inspires at their best. So, if the rain relents for long enough in this Test, can Pakistan do what they did in England in 2016 and 2018 and draw the series?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Joe Root is back in his number four position and has a key role to play. He averages 49.36 in 73 knocks at number four, compared to 38.66 in 53 innings at three.
  • Also, Root has a strong record vs Pakistan: 11 Tests, 981 runs, avg. 57.70.
  • Can Shan Masood deliver in this Test? He has scored 0 and 1 since his superb 156 at Old Trafford, so it will be interesting to see how he responds. His opening partner, Abid Ali, fought hard for 60 last time out.
  • Babar Azam has scored some tough runs (121 runs in three knocks) in a series where bowlers have dominated. Since the start of 2018, Babar has scored 1,496 runs at 62.33. A key player.
  • Can Zak Crawley build on his promising 53 on day five of the last Test?
  • Jos Buttler only got to bat 13 balls in the last Test, but his recent batting form has been encouraging (220 runs in last six knocks at 44). Also, Buttler enjoys batting at the Ageas Bowl, boasting an average of 75.77 in four Tests.
  • His opposite number, Mohammad Rizwan, won man of the match last Test. His fighting knock of 72 goes well with his excellent glovework. Encouraging signs.
  • Ollie Pope has performed well with England under pressure in recent times. He has scored 91 and 62 in the two Tests before the last, coming in with England tottering both times (122/4 and 12/3).
  • Stuart Broad has taken 26 wickets in seven innings since being left out (3.71 wickets per innings). Also, Broad has scored 109 runs at 54.50.
  • Broad’s career record vs Pakistan: 64 wickets, average 22.54, SR 54.7.
  • James Anderson denied retirement rumours. Then, he came out and bowled beautifully. He is coming off 3/60 in the last Test, and has the most wickets of any English bowler vs Pakistan (67 wickets, avg. 19.82).
  • Yasir Shah has taken nine wickets in three innings this series.
  • Mohammad Abbas loves these conditions. He has taken five wickets this series, and averages 15.93 in four Tests in England.
ENG vs PAK 3rd Test Preview: Can Babar go big for Pakistan?

Stats and Facts

  • The average first innings score in Tests at Southampton is 285.8. This number is given a huge boost thanks to England’s 569/7d v India in 2014. The other four scores have been 184, 246, 204 and Pakistan’s 236 last Test.
  • Spotlight will be on Rory Burns and Dom Sibley. Their average opening partnership this summer is 30.25. Rory Burns has scored just 14 runs in three knocks this series, and Sibley continues to struggle with balls down the legside.
  • Spotlight will also be on under pressure skipper Azhar Ali. He has scored 232 runs at an average of 12.21 in his last 18 Test knocks outside Asia.
  • James Anderson needs seven wickets to become the first pace bowler to take 600 Test wickets.

Possible Playing 11

Dom Bess didn’t bowl a single over in the last Test, but with the Southampton track historically providing assistance to spinners, England will likely look to keep that spinning option.

Jofra Archer, who was rested last Test, could come back in as part of England’s rotation. It remains to be seen whether England choose to rest another seamer, such as James Anderson.

England: 1. Rory Burns, 2. Dom Sibley, 3. Zak Crawley, 4. Joe Root (c), 5. Ollie Pope, 6. Jos Buttler (wk), 7. Chris Woakes, 8. Dom Bess, 9. Stuart Broad, 10. Jofra Archer, 11. James Anderson

Pakistan’s bowlers didn’t do much work in the second Test courtesy of the weather. So, there is every chance they will go in with the same XI.

Pakistan: 1. Shan Masood, 2. Abid Ali, 3. Azhar Ali (c), 4. Babar Azam, 5. Fawad Alam, 6. Asad Shafiq, 7. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 8. Yasir Shah, 9. Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10. Mohammad Abbas, 11. Naseem Shah

Ageas Bowl Southampton Pitch Report and Conditions

The seam movement and swing on offer was a sight to behold in the small amount of action we saw in the second Test. The average first innings score at Southampton is now below 300, even with England’s huge 569/7d in 2014. So, expect the seamers to play a key role again, with spin, an example being Moeen Ali in 2018, not out of the question either.

In terms of the weather forecast, rain is unfortunately expected to make an appearance throughout the Test again. However, the hope is that it won’t be as persistent as the second Test, with the sun forecast to make an appearance throughout each day.

Weather permitting, this match has the makings of another close battle, given that both bowling attacks are capable of causing carnage to fragile batting lineups. Runs on the board up front the key to victory? A good chance.
