Nepal, USA & UAE seal passage to qualifier in Zimbabwe

The big story is Nepal’s brilliant achievement. They beat UAE in a thriller with Duckworth/Lewis coming into play due to bad light, after Asif Khan’s blistering 42-ball 101* took UAE to an imposing 310/6.

An estimated 20,000 supporters packed out the TU International Cricket Ground at Kathmandu to witness a great moment in Nepali cricket. The team finished on 269/6 after 44 overs to win by nine runs on DLS, sparking scenes of sheer jubilation.

In April, USA qualified by beating Jersey by 25 runs. Ali Khan was the star, taking a remarkable 7/32 off 9.4 overs to seal qualification.

Ireland join after 2-0 series to Bangladesh

South Africa did their bit, beating the Netherlands 2-0 at home in early April, lifting the Proteas to 98 points. The only team who could have caught them is Ireland, who had to beat Bangladesh 3-0 in their May ODI series in England. In the end, Bangladesh won 2-0.

2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier format

A total of ten teams will participate in the qualifier in Zimbabwe. Out of the ten nations, just two will progress to the World Cup in India.

In the tournament itself, there will be two groups of five. The top three teams in each group will qualify to the Super Sixes, whereby the top two teams will advance to the final and thus qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

After an intriguing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the focus now shifts to the 50-over format. Both teams will look to get an idea of their combinations for the upcoming World Cup later in the year. India are a formidable side in ODIs, whitewashing New Zealand in their last ODI assignment two months ago.

Australia also whitewashed England in their last ODI series in November last year. They were clinical throughout the series, but they came up against an England side who had just won the T20 World Cup. Here there are going to be a few key players absent for Australia, including their regular captain Pat Cummins, so how they respond will be interesting to see.

IND vs AUS 1st ODI 2023 Match Prediction – Who will win?

Both India and Australia are strong teams, so expect a competitive match. India might win the game because they have a superior bowling unit. Australia are missing their key bowlers – Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood – which weakens their bowling attack comparatively.

Mumbai Indians (MI) head into IPL 2023 off the back of a disappointing 2022 season. The five-time champions finished bottom of the league, winning just four of the ten matches.

In an attempt to improve their fortunes, MI focused on building more squad depth in the auction. They landed Cameron Green’s services for one of the highest sums in IPL history, while they also picked up the likes of Piyush Chawla, Duan Jansen and Shams Mulani.

You can watch CricBlog’s MI preview on YouTube here or below.

MI IPL 2023 Preview & Analysis: Strengths and Weaknesses

How will MI travel in IPL 2023? Below is a look at the franchise’s key strengths and weaknesses for the upcoming season.

Strengths:

Powerful, versatile batting lineup

MI have a batting lineup that is the envy of other teams in the league. With incredible overseas talent along with domestic class, the five-time champions can make massive scores throughout the season.

Tilak Varma was the biggest positive for MI in a disappointing season in IPL 2022, with he and the superb Suryakumar Yadav set to be a brilliant combination in the middle and backend overs. Also, the franchise has the likes of Tim David to finish off the work of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and co., while they can use Cameron Green to their liking.

Return of Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer, the MVP of IPL 2020, looked in good form in England’s recent tour of Bangladesh. He was getting his speeds up towards the 150km/h mark, which is great news for MI. With the ability to bowl at all stages of the innings, MI can look to use Archer as the leader of the attack when available and have the other bowlers chip in at key stages.

Weaknesses

Absence of Jasprit Bumrah – potential to concede huge totals

MI may make big scores, but they are every chance of conceding big scores too. With seven matches at the batting paradise that is the Wankhede, we may see numerous 200 vs 200 matches involving MI. Also, the franchise will have matches at other batting-friendly grounds such as Bengaluru, so whether MI’s bowling attack – without the great Jasprit Bumrah – can limit opposition teams on good surfaces is a huge question mark.

Also, it is a big ask for Jofra Archer to play every game considering he is only easing his way back from his injury problems. So, the role of Jason Behrendorff (if picked) in the powerplay and depth of the MI bowling stocks will certainly be tested.

Lack of experienced option for important number 7 spot

Ramandeep Singh showed promise at the backend of last season, and he may be tasked with occupying that important all-rounder spot at number seven. However, he has batted just 18 times in all T20s, while bowling on just 14 occasions. So, getting up and running right away may be a challenge.

Other potential options for the number seven spot includes Cameron Green, but he looks his best up the order. Nehal Wadhera and Shams Mulani are other all-round options in the squad.

Inexperienced spin options, so onus may be on 34-year old Piyush Chawla

The impressive Kumar Kartikeya and Hrithik Shokeen both have the potential to have strong seasons. But, as mentioned, their skill will be tested on good batting surfaces, especially given they are inexperienced.

So, there may be an onus on Piyush Chawla to deliver key overs for the franchise. The legspinner has been one of the IPL’s excellent spin bowlers, but his lack of competitive cricket in 2023 is something to overcome.

MI IPL 2023 Verdict

MI have the batsmen to make huge scores. However, whether they have enough bowling might to restrict opponents is a huge question mark.

Given the talent they have on board, they will be in contention for a playoffs spot. However, in such a competitive ten-team league, MI’s propensity to concede big totals may see them narrowly miss out on the top four.

Delhi Capitals name David Warner as captain for IPL 2023; Axar Patel to be his deputy

Cricket News: Delhi Capitals name David Warner as captain for IPL 2023; Axar Patel to be his deputy | Who will be the DC captain in IPL 2023?

Delhi Capitals have declared David Warner as their captain for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). All-rounder Axar Patel will be Warner’s deputy as the duo will look to steer the franchise to their maiden IPL title in the absence of their skipper Rishabh Pant.

Warner has previously led Sunrisers Hyderabad to a tournament victory back in IPL 2016. He was at the helm of Delhi Daredevils on an interim basis for some games during his first stint with the now-rebranded franchise from 2009-13. He will be keen to redeem his stature after a frustrating tour to India and following a lost quest of regaining his captaincy credentials amidst a tussle with Cricket Australia (CA).

https://twitter.com/DelhiCapitals/status/1636227038435590145?s=20

David Warner named as Delhi Capitals captain for IPL 2023

DC roped in Warner for a reasonable sum of Rs 6.25 crore in the mega auction prior to the previous season of the IPL. He struck a dynamic opening partnership with Prithvi Shaw after missing the initial few games. He notched 432 runs at an average and strike rate of 48 and 150.52 respectively with five half-centuries to his name in 12 games.

He will have added responsibility on his shoulders this time in terms of both batting as well as in the leadership role as Pant continues to recover from the horrific car crash that he suffered on December 30, 2022.

Meanwhile, Axar Patel has been elevated to the role of a vice-captain following the rapid progressive strides that he has taken in his India career. Patel finished as the third-highest run scorer (264) in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He was one of the Capitals’ four retentions along with Pant, Shaw and Anrich Nortje ahead of IPL 15. He scored 182 runs and took six wickets in 13 appearances last year and will be looking to put up an improved individual performance under greater responsibility in the coming season.

Further, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly is now set to return to the DC setup as the Director of Cricket Operations. Ganguly had mentored the unit in IPL 2019 but had to step down from the responsibilities after his election as the BCCI boss later that year.

“Excited, honored and thrilled to welcome @SGanguly99 to the @DelhiCapitals family as the Director of Cricket – dada has and will always be the reason I fell in love with this beautiful game and his experience and wisdom will no doubt take us to new heights as a franchise,” JSW Sports Managing Director (MD) Parth Jindal said whilst announcing Ganguly’s arrival.

BCCI appeals against ‘poor’ rating given to Indore pitch

Cricket News: BCCI appeals against ‘poor’ rating given to Indore pitch | BCCI appeals poor rating for Indore pitch vs Australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lodged a formal complaint against the ‘poor’ rating given to the Indore pitch for the third Test between India and Australia earlier this month. Now, a two-member committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will review this appeal before declaring their verdict on the issue within two weeks.

“Pitch was very dry and did not provide a balance between bat and ball, favouring spinners from the start,” match referee Chris Broad said in his assessment of the track on which the game rounded off within two-and-a-half days itself. Broad further stated that there was excessive and uneven bounce on the surface throughout the game.

Accordingly, the Holkar Stadium secured three demerit points after Broad’s damning assessment of the pitch. The venue will be banned from hosting international matches if it is handed two further demerit points over the five-year rolling period.

The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) curators were given a very short notice to prepare the pitch for the third Test in Indore. The BCCI decided on February 13 to not host the game at the scheduled venue in Dharamshala as the relaid outfield over there was found to be unsatisfactory by the BCCI inspection team.

Indore Pitch: Do cricket boards usually appeal against pitch ratings?

Recently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) successfully appealed against the ‘below average’ rating handed to the pitch in Rawalpindi that hosted the game between England and the host team late last year. The visitors won that match by 74 runs but the ICC referee Andy Pycroft had given a single demerit point to the pitch. Following another assessment, the ICC rescinded that point and instead declared that the pitch had several redeeming features, which was substantiated by the fact that 37 out of the total 40 wickets fell during the course of the game.

Top 5 Test Centuries By Virat Kohli In India

On the backdrop of his 75th international ton, taking a look at some of Virat Kohli’s most iconic centuries in Test cricket on Indian soil.

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli brought an end to his over three-year-long century drought in Test cricket with a majestic knock of 186 runs in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia in Ahmedabad. Prior to this, Kohli’s last ton in whites had come against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in November 2019.

Since then, a lot has changed for the batting talisman – having stepped down from captaincy in all three formats and also battling a really difficult phase of lean form. He finally reached his landmark 71st century in the Asia Cup against Afghanistan and has regained a lot of his touch ever since.

Best centuries by Virat Kohli in India

On that note, let us take a look at Kohli’s five best Test centuries in home soil so far.

1. 235 v England, 2016

Kohli was undergoing an absolute purple patch at the time of this innings and it reflected in the relentless manner in which he tore down the English bowling attack at the Wankhede Stadium in November 2016. With boundaries and a solitary six, Kohli made his 235 an impressive strike rate of 69.12 against a unit comprising the likes of James Anderson, Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes amongst others.

He stitched useful partnerships with Murali Vijay (135) and Jayant Yadav (104) and demonstrated terrific fitness standards by securing singles and doubles at will throughout the course of this marathon knock. India consequently ended up winning the game by an innings and 36 runs.

2. 254* v South Africa, 2019

India had completely rolled over the South African side in their tour to the country back in 2019. Virat Kohli’s 254* in Pune, which is till date his highest score in international cricket, was major contributing factor towards the same. With 33 boundaries and two maximums, Kohli played this humungous knock at a brilliant strike rate of 75.60.

He was unfazed by the pace trio of Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander and Anrich Nortje and found great support from Mayank Agarwal (108), Ajinkya Rahane (59) and Ravindra Jadeja (91). India declared after crossing the 600-run mark and post Jadeja’s dismissal, otherwise, this was an ideal opportunity for Kohli to even score his maiden triple ton for India.

3. 186 v Australia, 2023

The latest knock from Kohli finds the third spot in this list. On a placid surface in Ahmedabad, the 34-year-old spearheaded India’s pursuit of chasing down Australia’s mammoth 480 runs in the first innings. Unlike some other iconic innings of his, Kohli played this one at a lower strike rate of 51.10 with 15 boundaries.

He patiently bode his time, ran several singles and looked undeterred with everything that Australia threw at him in an eight-hour-long knock to help India secure a 91-run lead eventually. Will this mark the dawn of Kohli’s turnaround for a final phase of dominance in international cricket?

4. 107 v Australia, 2013

These were one of the early days in Kohli’s booming Test career and he notched a well-crafted century in Chennai in the first innings of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2013. Australia had set up a formidable first-innings score of 380 runs and Kohli came into bat at a delicate stage with India’s score reading 105/3.

He, however, formed useful partnerships first with Sachin Tendulkar and then with MS Dhoni to help India secure a lead of 192 runs. Most of it was propelled with Dhoni’s inaugural double century in Test cricket but Kohli’s guile and resilience in tackling a decent Australian bowling unit garnered appreciation from all quarters.

5. 103 v New Zealand, 2012

Kohli’s maiden Test ton on Indian soil had come against New Zealand in Bengaluru in 2012. India were reduced to 67-3 after the Kiwis put up a total of 365 in the first innings. The home team eventually conceded a rare lead of 12 runs as Tim Southee picked seven wickets in that essay of play.

It was Kohli who along with Suresh Raina (55) demonstrated fine cricketing knowhow in manoeuvring the visitors’ bowling attack comprising Trent Boult and Douglas Bracewell partnering an in-form Southee. Batting at number five, Kohli got to his century with 14 boundaries and a solitary six in an innings that set the tone for the rest of his successful Test career.

Will Shreyas Iyer be fit for IPL 2023?

Cricket News: Will Shreyas Iyer be fit for IPL 2023? | Shreyas Iyer injury update: Will the KKR captain be fit for IPL 2023?

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is under doubt after the recurrence of a back injury ruled him out of the One Day International (ODI) series against Australia.

Iyer did not come out to bat in the fourth test against Steven Smith’s men in Ahmedabad either and he will be undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. His fitness will be monitored by the medical staff of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and then a final decision will be taken on his potential involvement in IPL 2023.

“He had to wait all day (second day) to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back, recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well,” said Indian captain Rohit Sharma as he provided an update on Iyer’s injury post the conclusion of the fourth Test.

The BCCI has asserted that they will be seeking the opinion of a specialist on this matter for greater clarity. Iyer had first suffered this injury following the tour of Bangladesh in December last year. He had then gone to the NCA for rehab as well and was provided an injection to cure the same.

However, his overall recovery took longer than expected. He first ended up missing the ODIs against New Zealand in January and was unavailable for selection in the first Test against Australia in Nagpur on February 9 as well.

The team management will be keeping close tabs on Iyer’s condition considering that he is a vital cog in the ODI setup and with the bigger picture of the World Cup scheduled to be held in the country in October-November this year. Iyer averages 46.6 with a strike rate of 96.51, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries in 42 ODIs.

Who will lead KKR in IPL 2023 if not Iyer?

Meanwhile, there is uncertainty over who would lead KKR in Iyer’s absence. Sunil Narine and Andre Russell appear to be the possible alternatives considering their seniority but a final call on the same will be taken by the franchise in the coming weeks.

BAN vs ENG 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 | BAN vs ENG 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | Mirpur Pitch Report

Bangladesh have surprised one and all in the T20I series against England, the current world champions. They got the better of England in the first two games and have taken an unassailable lead in the T20I series. The Shakib-led side crossed the line in 18.5 overs while chasing a modest total of 118 in the last game. They will have an opportunity to clean sweep England.

Meanwhile, England would look for a better all-round performance in the last game of the tour. The English batters, who succumbed to Bangladesh’s spinners, will particularly hope for a better effort to provide their team with a solitary win in the T20I series.

DEL-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: WPL 2023 Match 11

DEL-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: WPL 2023 Match 11 | DC-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction Today | DY Patil Pitch Report

If matches are decided on form, we may as well call this game off. Royal Challengers Bangalore are still winless in WPL 2023, unable to put a complete performance together so far as their net run rate stands at a shocking -2.648. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, sit pretty in second spot and will be aiming to cement their position with a solid display.

However, the beauty of T20 cricket is that anything can happen on the day. RCB’s desperation for a victory can work in their favour, with Smriti Mandhana’s team sure to throw everything they have into this battle. But, to win, the RCB bowlers, who have struggled so much in this tournament, need to get the better of Delhi’s very strong top order. Much easier said than done.

Meg Lanning’s Capitals come into this clash off the back of one of the most dominant wins you’ll ever see. After bowling Gujarat out for a measly 105 thanks largely to Marizanne Kapp’s 5/15, Shafali Verma went on a rampage to seal the chase with 77 balls to spare. So, what do these classy Capitals have in store for us today?

WPL 2023 Match 11: DEL-W vs RCB-W Possible Playing XIs

Delhi Capitals: 1. Meg Lanning (c), 2. Shafali Verma, 3. Jemimah Rodrigues, 4. Marizanne Kapp, 5. Laura Harris, 6. Jess Jonassen, 7. Taniya Bhatia (wk), 8. Shikha Pandey, 9. Minnu Mani, 10. Radha Yadav, 11. Tara Norris

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1. Smiri Mandhana (c), 2. Sophie Devine, 3. Ellyse Perry, 4. Kanika Abuja, 5. Heather Knight, 6. Richa Ghosh (wk), 7. Shreyanka Patil, 8. Erin Burns/Dane van Niekerk/Megan Schutt, 9. Komal Zanzad, 10. Renuka Singh, 11. Sahana Pawar

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Delhi Capitals:

  • RCB have conceded 10.74 runs per over in WPL 2023. So, it’s an opportunity for Shafali Verma to go big once again. She belted 76* (28) last game vs Gujarat and 84 (45) against RCB earlier in the tournament.
  • Meg Lanning has struck 206 runs at an average of 68.66 and strike rate of 146.09 this season. This includes 72 (43) against RCB.
  • Marizanne Kapp also enjoyed batting against RCB. She scored 39* (17) earlier in WPL 2023. Now, Kapp has some bowling rhythm after taking a superb 5/15 against Gujarat two nights ago.
  • Tara Norris blew RCB away in their earlier meeting. She took 5/29, dismissing Ellyse Perry, Disha Kasat, Richa Ghosh, Heather Knight and Kanika Ahuja in a superb spell.
  • Smriti Mandhana has been dismissed by spin in all four innings this season. Three have come against offspin. So, Minnu Mani will sense an opportunity.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

  • Smriti Mandhana struck 79 in her last match at DY Patil Stadium – against Australia in December 2022. Can she produce something similar here to kickstart her season?
  • Both Sophie Devine (132) and Ellyse Perry (128) are among the top ten run-scorers in WPL 2023.
  • Perry has taken two wickets in two matches at DY Patil at a strike rate of nine balls per wicket.
  • Heather Knight is striking at 188.57 but has only faced 34 balls this season. Knight coming in the early-middle overs can benefit RCB.
  • Knight has also picked up four wickets, which is the most for any RCB bowler in WPL 2023.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Delhi Capitals (223/2) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (163/8) easily earlier in WPL 2023.
  • Laura Harris has a strike rate of 157.01 in 83 innings in the Women’s Big Bash League. This is the best among batters who have played at least ten innings in that league.
  • Shafali Verma has a strike rate of 192.47 in WPL 2023. This is the best among any player with at least 80 runs.

DY Patil Sports Academy Mumbai Pitch Report and Weather

Batting first has proven difficult in the last two games. Delhi were dismissed for 105 against MI, and they then restricted Gujarat to 105/9 in the next match. The chasing team has won three of the five matches on this ground this season, but the team batting first won both games easily when posting 200+.

Another clear and warm evening is forecast in Mumbai.
