Australian trio of skipper Aaron Finch along with middle-order swashbucklers Tim David and Marcus Stoinis are dealing with their respective injury concerns ahead of the defending champions’ upcoming group-stage encounter against Afghanistan at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
“I’ve had a bit of a hammy twinge, I don’t feel too bad at the moment but generally overnight it can stiffen up a bit. I will have a scan (on Tuesday),” Finch opened up on his hamstring issue in the aftermath of their 42-run victory against Ireland on Monday.
The 35-year-old scored 63 runs off 44 deliveries as he showed glimpses of regaining his touch with the bat in the aforementioned game.
However, David did not take the field whilst Australia’s bowling due to soreness in his hamstring. Marcus Stoinis, too, had to be taken off after rolling his arm for only one over. Stoinis’ series of side complaints is being attributed as a reason for the same, cricket365.com reports.
Finch – we must beat Afghanistan to stay alive in the tournament
Irrespective of these fitness issues, Australia recorded a much-needed convincing victory against the Irishmen at The Gabba. The injury-ridden duo of Finch and Stoinis top-scored with 63 and 35 respectively and Australia is now placed in second spot in the Group 1 standings.
They have five points to their name and their net run rate (NRR) is -0.304 currently. With England breathing down their neck, the eventual NRR is possibly going to be the distinguishing factor for the qualification prospects of teams in this group. Australia managed to do well on this front but pacer Mitchell Starc insisted that the side came away with their primary objective of winning this game in the first place.
“I guess you could look at that. I mean, first and foremost, we need to win these games, so we tick that box. For us it’s just trying to win these games because if you don’t win, it doesn’t matter, does it? We brought that run-rate back a bit, and we’ll see how we place in 24 hours,” he said, also speaking about England’s upcoming clash against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
As of now, Australia’s primary target will be to emerge victorious against Afghanistan on Friday. The impact of these injury concerns and the possible absenteeism of these players in that game will be closely scrutinized.

The schedule says it’s the 33rd match of the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, for England, it’s a virtual quarter final. A win over high-flying New Zealand puts them in pole position to qualify for the Semi Finals, given their net run rate is still superior to Australia’s. Indeed, Jos Buttler’s team are thankful to Lorcan Tucker for reducing the margin of Ireland’s defeat last night.
However, defeat to the Black Caps, which is a possibility given how good Kane Williamson’s team has been, leaves England needing Afghanistan to beat Australia later this week. To keep fate in their own hands, they must elevate the level of performance they have displayed so far this tournament, after struggling to a 113-run target against Afghanistan and then losing to Ireland.
The batting is under the spotlight. Early wickets has been an issue, and New Zealand have the form and bowlers to exploit this. But, the sheer talent and depth in England’s ranks means they can turn it on at any moment, and today could be the day. Also, it must be remembered that the Black Caps were reduced to 15/3 against Sri Lanka, so England’s bowlers will also be relishing the opportunity to make a mark.
England’s match against Australia was washed out. They may stick with the same team that lost narrowly on Duckworth-Lewis to Ireland.
England: 1. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 2. Alex Hales, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Harry Brook, 6. Moeen Ali, 7. Liam Livingstone, 8. Sam Curran, 9. Chris Woakes, 10. Mark Wood, 11. Adil Rashid
New Zealand have no reason to change their winning combination, unless they wish to bring in an extra pacer for the Gabba.
New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Daryl Mitchell, 6. James Neesham, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Ish Sodhi/Adam Milne, 10. Trent Boult, 11. Lockie Ferguson
ENG vs NZ Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players
England:
Dawid Malan has struggled for rhythm in this tournament. Today could be his day, as he has great numbers against NZ: 7 inns, 361 runs, avg. 60.16, SR 154.93.
Also, Malan often performs in the third match of a series. In such matches, he has scored 517 runs in 13 innings at an average of 43.08 and strike rate of 149.85.
Jos Buttler has a strike rate of 149.63 in nine T20I innings vs New Zealand (avg. 34.16). The skipper will be aiming to rediscover the form he showed in the Australia series before the World Cup: 3 inns, 150 runs, avg. 75.00, SR 174.41.
Buttler has never been dismissed by Boult in all T20s (37 balls, 56 runs). He has never been dismissed by Southee in T20 Internationals (16 balls, 19 runs).
Given New Zealand have four right-handers in their top five, Liam Livingstone may bowl. The all-rounder was excellent against Ireland (3/17), and he is a factor with the bat, too.
Mark Wood has taken 14 wickets in his last five T20Is. In all T20s this year, Kane Williamson has been dismissed five times for 103 runs in 95 balls against right-arm pace. This is a matchup England may look to exploit.
Sam Curran has taken seven wickets in two matches so far in this tournament. This follows five wickets in two matches against Australia before the World Cup.
New Zealand:
Glenn Phillips is coming off a brilliant century against Sri Lanka (104). New Zealand’s number four is their top run-scorer this year, with 565 at an average of 51.36 and strike rate of 154.37.
Devon Conway in T20Is in 2022: 10 inns, 432 runs, avg. 61.71, SR 130.51.
Kane Williamson has scored two fifties in seven innings vs England. Overall, he has scored 215 runs at an average of 35.83 and strike rate of 122.85.
Jos Buttler has been dismissed twice by left-arm seam in this World Cup. So, the battle with Trent Boult, who has taken six wickets in two matches in this tournament, promises to be a fascinating one.
Boult will be looking to improve his record against England. In eight matches, he has conceded 10.55 runs per over, with nine wickets to his name.
Mitchell Santner has the most wickets in ENG-NZ T20Is. The spinner has taken 16 wickets in just ten matches at an economy of 8.26 and strike rate of 12.
Tim Southee is New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker among seamers this year. He has taken 15 wickets in ten T20Is in 2022 at an average of 19.53 and strike rate of 15.2.
Other Stats and Facts
Head-to-head: Matches 22, England 13, New Zealand 8, N/R 1.

James Neesham smashed 27 off 11 balls in the Semi Final. In T20Is this year, Neesham has hit 242 runs between overs 16 and 20 at a strike rate of 200.
Alex Hales in T20s at the Gabba: 3 inns, 88 runs, avg. 29.33, SR 146.67.
Ben Stokes averages just 24.47 in 33 T20s at number four. He has been bowling nicely, with figures of 2/19 and 1/8 in this World Cup.
Moeen Ali is England’s second-highest run-scorer this year (490, avg. 35.00, SR 162.79). He looked good in the last match against Ireland (24* off 12).
Ish Sodhi is NZ’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is in 2022: 17 matches, 23 wickets, avg. 22.43, SR 16.3.
Gabba Brisbane Pitch Report and Weather
The weather was poor on Tuesday morning in Brisbane, but conditions should clear up nicely for this match. The team batting first has won five of the last six T20s on the ground (avg. first innings score 165), including Australia yesterday over Ireland.

Indian batsman Virat Kohli has lashed out at a breach of privacy in his hotel room in Perth, where the Indian team was staying during their preparatory camp prior to the commencement of the on-going T20 World Cup. ESPNcricinfo has reported that the invasion took place on 8th October.
Kohli opened up about the incident in a rather descriptive Instagram post made through his official account on 31st October, a day after India’s loss to South Africa in the same city on Sunday. The entire issue is about a video captioned ‘King Kohli’s Hotel Room’ that showcases the 33-year-old’s room in the Crown Towers hotel. It was uploaded on TikTok by an anonymous user. Kohli has certainly not taken the issue lightly.
Virat Kohli has shared disturbing footage of what appears to be strangers recording a video in his hotel room.
“I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that. But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy,” Kohli wrote on his Instagram post.
He added, “If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment.”
Crown Towers, however, has apologized for the misdemeanor and the concerned individuals have been penalized by the hotel authorities.
Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has also expressed its disappointment at the aforementioned privacy invasion. The ICC has assured that it will continue to work in coordination with both security providers as well as event hotels “to ensure that this remains an isolated incident and player privacy is fully respected at all times,” as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The website has also reported that the Indian side didn’t take this issue up with either the ICC or the Cricket Australia (CA). However, they did report the same to the hotel authorities.
“Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again. We are also cooperating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation,” Crown Towers’ official statement read.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has said that it is difficult to find an area of weakness in Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 batting. The 32-year-old scored 68 runs off 40 deliveries though the Indian batting unit faltered for 133/9 in 20 overs in their group stage encounter against South Africa in Perth on Sunday.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Fleming explored the Mumbai Indians’ player’s batting technique in length and provided some detailed insights into the same.
Suryakumar has a very open and aggressive stance – Fleming
“He just has a really positive mindset. And he has a very open and aggressive stance which allows him to play a lot of unusual areas. So he’s sort of created a technique which bowlers are finding it hard to find the right lengths [against] because if they’re full he’ll hit all the way over cover or around; if they’re fractionally short he’ll go over third man and point,” the former New Zealand skipper was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.
Fleming added, “And anything straight, he’s very good with the short ball. So he’s developed a technique that’s very hard to find an area of weakness [in].”
In the same show, ex-South African skipper Faf du Plessis also explained that bowlers cannot really tie down Suryakumar in certain, specific areas as he can pull off shots in many different areas of the field. Faf hailed his calmness as he never appears to be rushed or frenetic despite having so many shots at his disposal.
“He knows when to pull that trigger, go through the gears, and he just always looks calm. He’s just a fantastic T20 player to watch. He’s the perfect guy that as a youngster you look at how you go through different gears at different stages of the game,” Faf further opened up on his thoughts on Suryakumar.
The batsman has been in a phenomenal touch since making debuting in T20Is in February 2021. In 37 matches, he has scored 1179 runs at an average and strike rate of 40.66 and 177.03 respectively with 11 half-centuries and a century to his name as well. He demonstrated some incredible dynamism in going about his innings in a testing track in Perth against an on-fire South African pace attack on Sunday.

Another day, another rain threat in an Afghanistan game. You have to go back to the opening night of the Super 12s for Afghanistan’s last match, with both their matches in Melbourne washed out without a ball bowled.
As Mohammad Nabi’s team moves north to Brisbane, the rain has unfortunately followed. Up to 15 to 30mm is forecast to fall in the city on Tuesday. However, the hope is that most – if not all – of the rain will fall in the morning, with more promising conditions expected in the afternoon. Indeed, Afghanistan will want to get on the field not only to try make a late run to the semi finals, but just to remind the world of what they are capable of.
Sri Lanka are also in a state where they would like to send a reminder of what they are capable of. After a promising start against New Zealand, Dasun Shanaka’s team were then blown away by Glenn Phillips and the Black Caps’ bowlers to eventually lose by 65 runs. The result has seen Sri Lanka’s net run rate fall to -0.890 after the big win against Ireland, with their campaign well and truly on life support.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed 40 (18) and 84 (45) against Sri Lanka in the 2022 Asia Cup. He has scored 32 off just 13 balls against Maheesh Theekshana, without dismissal.
Ibrahim Zadran has made five 30+ scores in a row in T20Is. This includes 40 (38) in his last game against Sri Lanka. He can help hold the innings together.
Najibullah Zadran is Afghanistan’s top run-scorer in T20Is this year: 15 inns, 340 runs, avg. 28.33, SR 147.82.
Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have the most wickets in SL-AFG T20Is (4). Nabi concedes just 6.08 per over and Mujeeb just 6.75.
Mujeeb has taken 17 wickets in 16 T20s at the Gabba at an average of 24.82 and economy of 6.59.
Rashid Khan has a magnificent record in T20s at the Gabba. Rashid has taken 12 wickets in four T20s at an average of 8.00 and economy of 6.00. He has taken two three-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul.
Sri Lanka:
Kusal Mendis belted a 19-ball 36 in his last match against Afghanistan. As an opener in T20Is, Mendis has struck 782 runs at an average of 32.58 and strike rate of 145.62. In all other positions, Mendis has scored 234 runs at an average of 11.14 and strike rate of 97.90.
Pathum Nissanka in all T20s in Australia: 10 inns, 321 runs, avg. 32.10, SR 107.00. He will be tasked with setting a platform.
Charith Asalanka missed out against New Zealand (4). But, he was in good form in the previous three games, with a 30+ score in each outing. This includes an impressive 25-ball 38* against Australia.
Wanindu Hasaranga bowled nicely against New Zealand (1/22) after a tough game against Australia. He is the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup, with ten scalps in six matches at an average of 16.30 and economy of 7.08.
Maheesh Theekshana took total figures of 1/64 in two T20Is against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup (econ. 8.00). In this World Cup, Theekshana has been miserly, conceding just 6.63 per over with nine wickets in six matches.
Other Stats and Facts
Head-to-head: Matches 3, Sri Lanka 2, Afghanistan 1.
Fazalhaq Farooqi took 3/11 against Sri Lanka earlier this year. He dismissed Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka (LBW), and also Chamika Karunaratne (bowled).
Kasun Rajitha made an immediate impact in this World Cup. He took 2/23 against New Zealand, including a powerplay wicket of Kane Williamson.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa smashed a 14-ball 31 in his last match against Afghanistan.
Gabba Brisbane Pitch Report and Weather
The weather forecast looks horrible for Tuesday morning in Brisbane. But, the hope is that conditions will clear by the early afternoon ahead of this 2pm start (local time).
The team batting first has won four of the five T20s at the Gabba this year (avg. score 162.2), including Australia (178/7) by 31 runs against West Indies and Bangladesh (150/7) by three runs against Zimbabwe.

India lost an important match against South Africa, but there is a silver lining. Virat Kohli missed out with the bat and dropped a simple, crucial chance against eventual half-centurion Aiden Markram, but there is a silver lining. With Virat, there is almost always a silver lining.
During the high-profile clash at Perth, Kohli became the second player to reach 1,000 runs in men’s T20 World Cups. He not only beat the record in terms of the number of innings, but smashed it, like he did when notching up 12,000 runs in ODIs.
Virat Kohli T20 World Cup stats: The road to 1,000 runs
In addition to the number of innings, there are a number of incredible stats that highlight how prolific Kohli has been in the history of the T20 World Cup.
Fastest to 1,000 runs
Mahela Jayawardene reached 1,000 runs in Sri Lanka’s memorable triumph over India in the 2014 Final at Mirpur. The Sri Lankan great achieved the milestone in his 30th innings, underlying his status as one of the greats of the T20 World Cup.
Kohli went past Jayawardene’s record with an incredible eight innings to spare. With a trademark flick through midwicket, Kohli reached 1,000 runs in just his 22nd outing.
Average of 83.92
When Kohli reached the 1,000-run figure, he was averaging above 90. His dismissal brought the figure down, but it still sits at a remarkable 88.75 after his 64* vs Bangladesh and 26 vs Zimbabwe.
Among players with at least 700 runs in T20 World Cups, Kohli’s average is more than double the next best of 39.07 by Jayawardene and 34.66 by Rohit Sharma.
Average of 270.50 when chasing
If that wasn’t enough, Kohli’s prowess when chasing is unmatched. When batting second in T20 World Cups, Kohli has ammassed 541 runs at an average of 270.50 and strike rate of 135.9, with the 82 not outs against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022 right atop the list of all-time knocks in T20Is.
Also, every time Kohli finished unbeaten in a chase, India won the match.
50+ score in more than half of his knocks
Kohli has made 13 50+ scores in his 24 outings in T20 World Cups. This represents a 54.17% strike rate.
To paint a picture, Jayawardene made seven 50+ scores in 30 innings (23% strike rate). Chris Gayle, arguably the greatest T20 batsman of all time, made nine 50+ scores in 31 innings (29.03%). Indian teammate Rohit Sharma has made nine in 36 knocks (25%).
No dismissals in knockout matches
238 of Kohli’s T20 World Cup runs have come in knockout matches. He was not dismissed in any of the three matches, where he struck at 159.73.
In knockout matches (i.e. Semi Finals and Finals), Kohli has made scores of 72* off 44 balls (2014 SF vs South Africa), 77* off 58 balls (2014 Final vs Sri Lanka) and 89* off 47 balls (2016 SF vs West Indies).

Afghanistan are out of Melbourne, but still can’t escape the rain. So too England. New Zealand have also been affected.
Unfortunately, there is a possibility that rain will impact one or both of the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka (2pm start) and New Zealand-England (7pm start) matches at the Gabba on November 1. If both matches are washed out, it will have huge ramifications on Group 1, with Australia poised to make the Semi Finals should they beat Ireland and Afghanistan.
Gabba Brisbane weather: 100% chance of rain, but there is hope
A first glance of the Bureau of Meterology’s forecast makes for grim viewing. There is a 100% chance of rain in Brisbane on Tuesday, with anywhere between 15 to 30mm expected. This is particularly frustrating for these four teams and fans, given the weather in Brisbane has been good and is expected to be clear from Wednesday onwards.
However, there is hope. According to bom.gov.au, most of the rain is likely to fall in the morning and early afternoon. Winds of 20 to 30km/h will blow in a northwesterly direction in the early morning, then forecast to turn into a westerly 15 to 25km/h in the late morning. So, there is a chance these winds blow the rain clouds away in time for the first match.
bom.gov.au forecast for Brisbane.
AccuWeather presents a similar picture. The highest chance of precipitation is from 8am to 10am (75%), with a 75% chance of precipitation at 12 midday also. However, by 1pm, the chance of precipitation falls to 25% and then to just 20% by the 2pm start time for AFG-SL. Also, AccuWeather forecasts 0% chance of precipitation by 7pm for ENG-NZ.
AccuWeather: Brisbane forecast for 5pm onwards.
The key is that the morning rain does not impact the Gabba playing surface too much. The ground is known for good drainage, so there is hope that both games will go ahead uninterrupted.

The equation is simple for both Australia and Ireland in this crucial Group 1 clash. Win and significantly increase chances of qualification. Lose, and it’s pretty much all over, especially given the poor net run rates.
So, Australia’s first game at the Gabba in this World Cup is as cut-throat as it gets. Will it be a Halloween nightmare or treat? Aaron Finch and his team will be aiming for the former, with the margin of victory also crucial in case England beats New Zealand tomorrow.
That scenario poses a challenge. It can be easy to look ahead, but the Australians need to stay focused on the job at hand, particularly when you consider how under-par they have been so far in a home World Cup. Fluency for Aaron Finch, runs for David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, plus confidence for Glenn Maxwell and the bowlers is high on the agenda. If they can tick these boxes, along with a big win, it will be just about the perfect night for the hosts.
However, it is easier said than done. Ireland have proven time and time again they are no pushovers. With Andy Balbirnie’s team facing a similar scenario to Australia (two wins needed), the motivation will be high to perform. Also, they will be keen to test an Australian batting lineup that is on shaky ground, only held firm by Marcus Stoinis’ superb onslaught in Perth last week. Bring it on.
Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Tim David/Steve Smith, 7. Matthew Wade (wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood
Ireland may look to stick with the same team that won against England.

India and South Africa will be facing off at the Optus Stadium in Brisbane in a marquee Group 2 clash of the on-going edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. The Proteas have a chance of displacing India to the top spot in the standings with a victory in this game. On the other hand, India has an opportunity to further seal their chances of qualifying to the semi-final stage of the tournament by taking two points from this encounter.
South Africa defeated Bangladesh by 104 runs in the previous game after their first match against Zimbabwe didn’t yield any result. The Rohit Sharma-led side too is coming on the back of a convincing 56-run win against the Netherlands. The two teams are in an imperious run of form currently and hence it promises to be an absolute cracker of a contest at Perth.
South Africa could look to bring in Marco Jansen in place of either Keshav Maharaj or Tabraiz Shamsi considering the pitch condition in Perth. The Proteas could go with Maharaj given Shamsi’s poor record against India.
South Africa: 1: Temba Bavuma (C), 2: Quinton de Kock (WK), 3: Rilee Rossouw, 4: Tristan Stubbs, 5: Aiden Markram, 6: David Miller, 7: Wayne Parnell, 8: Marco Jansen, 9: Kagiso Rabada, 10: Anrich Nortje, 11: Keshav Maharaj
Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
India:
KL Rahul hasn’t scored big in the couple of games so far. However, he has notched half-centuries in both T20Is that he has played against South Africa until now. Will this be his evening to step up for the team?
With an average and strike rate of 41.29 and 184.86 respectively in 25 T20Is this year, Suryakumar Yadav will be the key threat for the Proteas particularly in the middle-phase of the Indian innings.
Virat Kohli tends to be a regular bank of runs in T20Is against South Africa. He has an average of 38.25 and strike rate of 135.40 in 12 T20Is vs Proteas.
As the designated finisher of the side, Dinesh Karthik will be looking to exploit the South African bowling attack. The wicketkeeper-batsman has a terrific average and strike rate of 35.83 and 155.80 in 12 T20Is against the Proteas.
With an economy rate of 6.80 and bowling strike rate of 15, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has plucked 15 wickets in 11 T20Is against South Africa. The pacer is likely to thrive in the prevalent conditions in Perth.
Arshdeep Singh ripped through the South Africa top order in a T20I last month. He dismissed left-handers de Kock, Rossouw and Miller in a superb spell.
South Africa:
Quinton de Kock has an impressive average and strike rate of 31.50 and 144.50 along with three half-centuries in 13 T20Is this year. Also, against India, de Kock has scored 311 runs at an average of 51.83 and strike rate of 142.01.
David Miller has really cranked it up for South Africa in T20Is in 2022. With an average of 57 and strike rate of 182.69, the southpaw has notched 285 runs in 11 T20I innings so far.
Rilee Rossouw has added another dynamic element in the middle-order for South Africa. The 33-year-old has an average and strike rate of 68 and 184.78 in eight T20Is that he has represented the Proteas in 2022 so far. He has struck two centuries in a row, including 100* (48) in his last game vs India.
Aiden Markram, with an average and strike rate of 40.40 and 159.06 respectively in T20Is in 2022, is another man in form that India needs to counter in order to bag two points from this game.
Can Kagiso Rabada deliver against India? He averages 37.00 with an economy of 7.40 in 11 matches against them. Anrich Nortje, who took four wickets against Bangladesh, will be seeking an improvement against India too: 7 inns, 5 wickets, avg. 43.20, econ. 9.82.
Other Stats and Facts
Head-to-head: Matches 25, India 13, South Africa 9, N/R 3.
Tristan Stubbs has maintained an incredible strike rate of 183.95 in 11 T20Is since his debut in the format earlier this year. South Africa will bank on him to up the ante to an extent in the middle overs.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign is on life support. Considered one of the contenders for the title, Babar Azam’s team has suffered two heartbreaking last-ball defeats in a row, bringing to life some of the pre-tournament concerns around this team.
First, the reliance on Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan have made scores of 32/2 and 28/2 in the powerplay, meaning they are behind the eight-ball early. Second, their inability to close out matches. Against India, they had the game in their grasp. So too Zimbabwe. Now, they no longer have qualification in their own hands. They must win three, and hope other results go their way.
On paper, this looks to be a good matchup against Netherlands. However, given how Pakistan have batted, no one can put it past the impressive Dutch attack to cause them problems on the bouncy Perth pitch. Even the strong India batting lineup took their time to get going against Scott Edwards’ team, with Suryakumar Yadav’s superb knock taking the game away.
The key question for Netherlands is whether they have enough runs. But, as Zimbabwe showed, you can restrict Pakistan to a low score, especially if you can break through the opening combination early. If they can, the Dutch can keep their semi-final hopes alive, while ending Pakistan’s.
Pakistan could look to play Asif Ali in place of Haider Ali.
Pakistan: 1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2. Babar Azam (c), 3. Shan Masood, 4. Iftikhar Ahmed, 5. Shadab Khan, 6. Mohammad Nawaz, 7. Asif Ali/Haider Ali, 8. Mohammad Wasim, 9. Haris Rauf, 10. Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11. Naseem Shah
Netherlands could look at playing the same XI, but Stephen Myburgh is available as an opening option.
Netherlands: 1. Max O’Dowd, 2. Vikramjit Singh/Stephen Myburgh, 3. Bas de Leede, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Tim Pringle, 8. Logan van Beek, 9. Shariz Ahmad, 10. Fred Klaassen, 11. Paul van Meekeren
Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
Pakistan:
Cometh the hour, cometh Babar Azam? The Pakistan captain hit three consecutive fifties in an ODI series against Netherlands earlier this year.
Pakistan also need Mohammad Rizwan to deliver. In 39 T20s this year, Rizwan has struck 1,660 runs at an average of 53.54 and strike rate of 127.69.
Shan Masood has held things together after low scores from the openers. Pakistan’s number three has made scores of 52* and 44 in this tournament, part of 1,556 runs in all T20s this year.
Shadab Khan enjoyed the bounce on offer at Perth. The legspinner took 3/23 vs Zimbabwe, including two left-handers. Also, Shadab could be key with the bat. Pakistan may bat him at four, where he has a good record in T20s: 21 inns, 585 runs, avg. 27.86, SR 156.84.
Watch out for Mohammad Wasim. The pacer took wickets at all stages of the innings against Zimbabwe, where he used the bouncer and yorker to great effect to finish with 4/24.
Naseem Shah was player of the match in Pakistan’s last ODI against Netherlands. He took 5/33. Mohammad Wasim took 4/36 in the same game.
Netherlands:
Max O’Dowd is the second-highest run-scorer in this T20 World Cup (153) at an average of 38.25 and strike rate of 123.38. O’Dowd had a poor ODI series against Pakistan earlier in 2022, where he made just five runs in three matches.
Vikramjit Singh scored two half-centuries in that three-match ODI series. But, he has struggled for form so far in T20s.
Bas de Leede can exploit Pakistan’s middle order if they are in too early. The seamer has taken nine wickets in five matches in this tournament, and he can enjoy the bounce.
Paul van Meekeren’s battle with the Pakistan top order is worth the price of admission alone. The seamer has taken total figures of 3/30 in 42 balls in the powerplay in this World Cup.
Tim Pringle has taken three wickets at an economy of just 5.62 in this World Cup. Can he build enough pressure so the seamers can pounce?
Other Stats and Facts
This will the first T20I between Pakistan and Netherlands since the 2009 World Cup. Pakistan won by 82 runs.
The two teams contested an ODI series earlier this year. Pakistan won 3-0, but won the third ODI by just nine runs.
Pakistan have never won a T20I in Australia. They have lost five, with one no-result.
Shaheen Shah Afridi is wicketless so far in this tournament.
Although Babar Azam has good numbers against left-arm seam this year, he has had trouble against the inswinging delivery. If Fred Klaasen can swing the ball early, he’s in the game.
Optus Stadium Perth Pitch Report and Weather
The Perth pitch has been magnificent in this World Cup. We have seen great battles between bat and ball, with seamers, spinners and batsmen enjoying periods of dominance. The average first innings score is just 133, with the chasing team winning two of the three games so far.
There is a small chance of afternoon showers, but there should be no major interruptions.
