Reports have surfaced online about a possible England tactic for the 2023 Ashes series, stating that the team is considering short boundaries to complement their attacking brand of play. According to The Times, England have discussed the possibility of having boundaries as short as 60 metres in the attempt to aid their ‘Bazball‘ strategy.

Whether the boundaries will indeed be 60m or not, there is little doubt that Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum will orchestrate another attacking display. Since the duo took over last year, England have scored at 4.76 per over; a stark level above Australia’s still respectable 3.56.

This includes 86 sixes, 28 more than the next highest – India with 58. Australia are further down the list with 32, but that shouldn’t be of concern according to a former Australia captain.

Michael Clarke has rubbished suggestions that these shorter boundaries will only aid England. Rather, Australia’s players can benefit as well in a tactic that could backfire for England’s bowlers.

“What a load of junk,” Clarke said on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast on Monday.

“Australian grounds are twice the size of England grounds anyway. That’s why there’s less sixes from the Australian players. Bat at the MCG you’ve got 90m boundaries, bat in England you’ve got 60m boundaries.

“Who cares? Both teams have got to bat.”

This revelation comes soon after Ben Stokes asked for flat, fast wickets for this year’s series. Should England produce such surfaces, it will certainly be fascinating to see how Australia’s batsmen – particularly Steve Smith – fare on surfaces that could play similarly to those at home.

Needing 17 off the final over, David connected three sixes in a row off Caribbean all-rounder Jason Holder’s bowling and deposited them into the stands to ensure that MI crossed over the finishing line in what was the 1000th game in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The match also coincided with MI skipper Rohit Sharma’s birthday and that elevated the importance of this victory to an altogether different level for the franchise. David was acquired for Rs 8.25 crore by Mumbai in the mega auction last year and he has regularly delivered such impressive performances giving a timely reminder of the tremendous striking ability and game awareness that he possesses.

“Look, it’s big shoes to fill. Obviously, Polly (Pollard) has done it for so many years and we have won so many championships with his performances,” Rohit touched upon the comparisons between Rohit and Pollard in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Tim obviously has got a lot of ability, as you saw today. He has got so much power and at the back end, it helps. When you have that kind of power, the bowler is always thinking, so that’s good to have,” he further added.

Tom Moody on Tim David’s potential

The 27-year-old has scored 158 runs in eight innings at an average of 39.50 and with a strike rate of 169.89 so far this season. He has notched six boundaries and 12 sixes already and is gradually growing into the finishing role expected of him by the team management.

“He (Tim David) is the sort of player that if there are some runs on the board and he comes in a comfortable time, he is extremely dangerous. It is critical, but maybe the next step in his game is maybe getting a few ones first down the ground, getting yourself an over, and then you can launch. I felt like he pulled the trigger a bit early tonight,” former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody had spoken about the same after MI lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) by 55 runs.

Punjab replied with a respectable 214/8 themselves, but they were still well short.

4. 246/5 by Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals, 2010

2010 and 2011 was truly a golden period for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). During the 2010 season, Murali Vijay hit a memorable 57-ball 127 to lead CSK to a mammoth 246/5, where only one Rajasthan Royals (RR) bowler, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, conceded less than ten per over.
